San Francisco 49ers who met with the news media this week said that he had nothing but good things to say about former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco Chronicle file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance said there is nothing weird about saying that he can only say nothing but good things about 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who guided and mentored Lance when he first came to the 49ers.

#2 Lance said that Garoppolo could have made it hell for him when he first got the Niners but he didn’t and he helped Lance out with everything.

#3 Garoppolo is not going to be released by the 49ers but the 49ers are still shopping Garoppolo. The Miami Dolphins have showed interest in Garoppolo. The best time is to trade now.

#4 Joe, talk about linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair who had off season surgeries on his left knee and left elbow. Al-Shaair said that his knee surgery recovery is not as bad as recovery from the elbow surgery.

#5 Yes it’s only pre season but it means a lot to a lot of people everywhere when the Green Bay Packers come calling on Fri Aug 12 against the 49ers at Levi Stadium. How much will you see of Aaron Rogers and Trey Lance in that one?

49ers continue prep for 2022 season on Day 4 of training camp

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle gets the blood pumping during warmups during a training camp practice at Levi’s Stadium on Saturday Jul 30, 2022. (Sports Radio Service)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In the last practice before they strap on the pads for full contact, the San Francisco 49ers were busy working out the kinks on Day 4 of Training Camp at their training facility just outside Levi’s Stadium.

There was grim news to begin the day from head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst tore his biceps in practice yesterday and will require surgery to repair his biceps. Hurst will most likely miss the entire 2022 season.

San Francisco was already thin on their defensive line with Hassan Ridgeway out (mild quad strain) and Arik Armstead who suffered a knee sprain and will be out a few weeks according to Shanahan.

Quarterback Trey Lance led the offense out in team drills. During 11-on-11 team drills, Lance showed off his running ability, eluding the rush when the pocket broke down around him. He showed off his strong arm that has his teammates impressed.

The 49ers running game led by Elijah Mitchell and JaMychal Hasty had impressive runs during the 11-on-11 team drill.

However, once again for a third straight practice, the vaunted defense of the 49ers stole the show to the delight of the 49ers Faithful who were in attendance.

Linebacker Fred Warner was the star of the defense with a knock away on a George Kittle reception attempt. Warner also had an interception off of Lance who was trying to connect with Ray Ray McCloud.

Other defensive players that stood out was Tarvarius Moore who had two interceptions himself, one of Lane and the other off of quarterback Nate Sudfeld.

Neither Sudfeld or Brock Purdy, both who are battling for the backup QB spot, looked impressive with Sudfeld having numerous overthrows and Purdy not making quick decisions.

Shanahan said he’s liked what he has seen from Lance during the first week of training camp. “Yeah I think I said the last time I thought he had a really good day. I was very happy with the throws. There’s something we have to get on the same page with wide outs on and that’s what camp’s for letting it rip.”

The 49ers have Sunday off to get prepared for their first practice with the pads on Monday morning.

NEWS AND NOTES: Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw participated in team drills but was limited as the coaching staff is being cautious with him. Kinlaw is coming off surgery to repair his ACL he tore last November.

Offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey participated in team drills for the first time since training camp began.

San Francisco’s first preseason game is on Friday 8/12 hosting the Green Bay Packers at 5:30pm at Levi’s Stadium.

#3 Rich, of the top 50 top selling NFL jerseys the Raiders Devante Adams ranks No.7. Adams all his career wanted to be a Raider and his dream came this season and he will No.17 at wide receiver.

#4 Rich, offensive lineman Brandon Parker looks like he will get the starting position over teammate Alex Leatherwood. Parker has seen more action reps in practice and could win the job at right tackle and Leatherwood would be the swing tackle.

#5 Las Vegas Mayor Luis Trujillo says their is a state of emergency for the state of Nevada as the Canyon Hermits Peak Fire in New Mexico contaminated the Gallinas River which Vegas relies on. The river has been contaminated with ash and debris and has only 50 days left of clean water. New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham said $2.25 million has been earmarked for residents for access to safe drinking water. With football coming up this could if it Vegas runs out of clean water could be a big concern.

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: It’s pretty much official Lance to be starting quarterback; Teams balking on Garoppolo because of huge contract

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance drops back to pass during practice drills at the 49ers practice facility in Santa Clara on Wed Jun 1, 2022 (AP News file photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes:

#1 Joe sources pretty much say that the 49ers starting quarterback will be Trey Lance it’s really been no secret and there has been no takers on quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo so will that mean that Garoppolo can participate in practices with the team at some point?

#2 The Seattle Seahawks, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, and Cleveland Browns but for different reasons any deal fell through.

#3 Head coach Kyle Shanahan was certain that the 49ers will find a trade partner for Garoppolo the hard part of that offering is the remaining year on his contract is $25 million and no team wants to get saddled with that unless the interested team wants to retain some of that contract.

#4 One of the other reasons the Niners want to move Garoppolo is because of Nick Bosa’s contract calls for $33 million and with a guaranteed price of $17 million and they want some cap room.

#5 Joe, the latest on the Deebo Samuel contract talks nothing imminent the 49ers want to get a deal and have Samuel before their first exhibition game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sat Aug 20th.

#4 Raiders tight end Darren Waller said he loves the chemistry and working with quarterback Derek Carr and wide receiver Devante Adams. Waller likes the idea that he and Adams could see more passes during the season from Carr.

#5 Tony, the Kansas City Chiefs not only are potent with quarterback Pat Mahomes on the offensive side of the ball but a big part of why the Chiefs are so successful they have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. San Francisco 49ers podcast with Joe Hawkes: 49ers lacking at offensive linemen; Is Garoppolo all but gone?

San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Aaron Brooks (65) tries to keep the Kansas City Chiefs at bay as Brooks is one of the few 49ers on the offensive line. (file photo yahoo.

On the SF 49ers podcast with J Hawkes:

#1 Joe, talk about head coach Kyle Shanahan and how he’s drafted in the off season he’s seems like he’s done well in all areas except at offensive lineman.

#2 Since Shanahan and Lynch have taken over the team of their 47 draft picks only seven of them have been linemen there haven’t been that many offensive linemen that have neither been picked up, drafted, or traded for.

#3 Sources at the Houston Texans made it clear that 49er quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will not be joining the team anytime soon as talks between the Garoppolo camp and the Seattle Seahawks have shown some possibilities.

#4 One of the reasons why the Texans are not interested in signing Garoppolo is because they have their sights set on Stanford quarterback David Mills who could be a starter for the Texans someday.

#5 As the 49ers are all but set on making Trey Lance their starting quarterback can you see any possibility for the 49ers keeping Garoppolo or is all but gone?
