San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo walks off the Levi Stadium in Santa Clara field after the 49ers were defeated handedly by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sun Oct 23, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with David:

#1 David, the San Francisco 49ers who are coming off a tough loss to the Kansas City Chiefs had a concern about protecting 49er quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The offensive line couldn’t seem to stop the Chiefs defensive pass rush.

#2 Dave, do you see running back Christian McCaffrey being a quick study on the playbook as he was impressive but did wing some of the playbook in last Sunday’s game?

#3 49ers are in Los Angeles at SoFi Stadium against the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday. The Rams have lost two of their last three games and are coming off a win against the Carolina Panthers. How do you see this match up this Sunday in the Southland.

San Francisco 49ers podcast with Marko Ukalovic: McCaffrey can’t do it all; 49ers go up against Rams in LA on Sunday

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo walks off the field at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara after the 49ers were trounced by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sun Oct 23, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the 49ers podcast with Marko:

#1 Before last Sunday’s game at Levi Stadium the San Francisco 49ers (3-4) organization were excited about the signing of running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers. But McCaffrey can’t do all the heavy lifting as the 49ers were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs (5-2) heavily 44-23.

#2 McCaffrey carried for eight times for 38 yards for an average of 4.8 yards. His teammates and fans were excited to see him carry the ball but it wasn’t enough as he didn’t score and the offense fall well short of challenging the Chiefs.

#3 Marko, talk about George Kittle who picked up his first touchdown of the season with six receptions for 98 yards and averaged 16.3 yards per catch. A day on the field but still facing the Chiefs you have to get in the end zone more times then that.

#4 McCaffrey got in the game but the question that resounded loudly how prepared was he for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s playbook?

#5 The Los Angeles Rams (3-3) despite getting defeated by the 49ers back on Oct 3, 24-9 and have lost two of their last three games they will have home field this Sunday and are coming off a 24-10 win against the Carolina Panthers how do you see this match up?

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Jacobs virtually did all the heavy lifting for the Raiders

Josh Jacobs scores one of his three fourth quarter touchdowns against the Houston Texans at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Oct 23, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#1 Tony, three touchdowns in one quarter the last one at that for Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs not bad in a day’s work in defeating the Houston Texans.

#2 Tony was it a matter of the Texans virtually didn’t have any run defense or Jacobs was able to find holes and capitalize the run game.

#3 Tony as a team the Raiders finished the game with 400 yards of offense and averaged 7.3 yards per carry. That’s some improved offense since their previous game against the Kansas City Chiefs in that one point 30-29 loss.

#4 On the Houston side of the field the Texans head coach Lovie Smith said the defense just didn’t play well enough Sunday. Smith said the defense needs to keep pushing and do better than they did.

#5 The Raiders start a two game road trip starting in New Orleans this Sunday and it’s off to Jacksonville on Sun Oct 30th. What is your prediction for this Sunday at the Superdome.

Chiefs spoil McCaffery’s debut in dominant 44-23 win over 49ers

Juju Smith-Schuster and Travis Kelce celebrate reaching the end zone during the Kansas City Cheifs 44-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday OCT 23, 2022. (Kansas City Cheifs)

by Marko Ukalovic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a battle of good offense versus good defense, offense won.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense scored 28 points in the second half en route to a convincing 44-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

San Francisco has two in a row and dropped to 3-4 on the season. Kansas City bounced back after a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills last week and entered their bye week at 5-2.

“You know 5-2 looks a lot better than 4-3,” said Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. “I think it comes where we’ll look forward to getting a little bit healthier. I think this leads them into a nice positive week where they can have some recovery time.”

The game marked the debut for running back Christian McCaffery in a 49ers uniform. McCaffery was acquired late Thursday evening for four future draft picks. He started out well with two rushes for 19 yards. McCaffery finished with 38 yards on eight carries and added two receptions for 24 yards.

The day belonged to the Chiefs as they dominated both sides of the ball. On defense they took advantage of two returning offensive tackles for San Francisco who were playing less than 100% health wise. They consistently pressured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and won the battle in the trenches in the second half.

On the offensive side of the ball, they made San Francisco’s high-ranking defense look subpar as they scored 28 of their 42 points in the second half as the 49ers had no answer trying to keep the high-ocatane offense out of the endzone.

It was the worst performance for San Francisco’s defense on the season, despite having defensive end Nick Bosa back in the lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury. They gave up over 500 yards of total offense and were undiscipline with motion penalties. They also failed to get off the field on two separate long third down conversions that led to touchdowns for Kansas City on both drives. A third and 11 was converted for a 57-yard reception by Marquez Valdez-Scantling with a deep throw down the field by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Then a third and 20 was converted on a screen play to Jerick McKinnon for 34 yards.

“Whenever you play the best teams in the league, you want to show what you’re all about. I believe the 49ers are one of the best teams in the league, obviously one of the best defenses. So, for us coming off a loss against the bills, you don’t want to have two losses (in a row) heading into the bye week. So we knew this was an extremely important game. That bye week is a lot better when you’re coming off a win,” said Mahomes.

San Francisco actually started the game well in the first quarter. An interception by safety Talanoa Hufanga set up the 49ers first touchdown. Garoppolo connected with Ray-Ray McCloud for a nine-yard touchdown reception to give San Francisco a 10-0 lead with 6:29 left.

Kansas City started to find its groove as they answered back on their next drive. Mecole Hardman took a quick shovel pass from Mahomes and raced in for an eight-yard touchdown, the first of his three-touchdown day.

Hardman gave the Chiefs their first lead with 7:09 left in the second quarter when he rushed for a 25-yard touchdown for a 14-13 lead Kansas City went into halftime with.

San Francisco had a chance to regain the lead after Skyy Moore fumbled a punt return that the Sam Womack recovered at the Chiefs 12-yard line. However, the 49ers failed to capitalize as three plays later Garoppolo was intercepted in the end zone by Joshua Williams.

“You know that’s a good team,” said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan summarizing the game. “You know they’re going to make some big plays, but I thought the most frustrating thing was the spots we hurt ourselves. In that first half, some of the false starts that we had on offense, lining up in the neutral zone on defense. For us to have that false start on the field goal, I was obviously so excited because they muffed the punt the next time, but for us to have a turnover there was a real big mistake. Ended up being alright when they missed that field goal. We talked about some of that stuff at halftime. We come out, give up a huge kick return and then have a really stupid penalty to add 15 yards at the end of it. Those are the things that disappoint me the most.”

While San Francisco was getting field goals on their drives, Kansas City responded with touchdown drives. The opening kickoff in the second half had Isiah Pacheco return the ball for 48 yards. To make matters worse, Jauan Jennings hit Pacheco out of bounds tacking on another 15 yards with an unsportsman like penalty.

The Chiefs only needed three plays to score and extend their lead when running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran for a 16-yard touchdown. After a San Francisco field goal, Kansas City marched back down the field on a nine play 75-yard drive finished off with a four-yard touchdown reception from Mahomes to Justin Watson.

San Francisco cut the deficit to 28-23 when Garoppolo connected with tight end George Kittle for a 15-yard touchdown reception where Kittle jumped up high to reel in the ball.

That was as close as the 49ers would get as the Chiefs sealed the deal by scoring the final 16 points on two touchdowns and a safety when Frank Clark sacked Garoppolo in the end zone.

Penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities were the combination of what became an embarrassing loss for San Francisco on their home turf in front of the Niners Faithful.

Mahomes finished a great afternoon going 25 of 34 for 423 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Hardman had 60 total yards to go alone with his touch rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. Juju Smith-Schuster led all wide outs in receiving with seven catches for 124 yards and one touchdown.

Garoppolo finished went 25 of 37 for 303 yards (the most he has thrown for this season) with two touchdown and one interception in what was a frustrating afternoon for the veteran quarterback. Jeff Wilson Jr led the 49ers in rushing with 54 yards on seven carries. Kittle was the leading receiver for San Francisco with six catches for 98 yards and one touchdown.

“I thought, especially early on in the first half, just getting those field goals instead of touchdowns, I thought that was a big difference. Just momentum and things like that, we knew going into this game that we had to score touchdowns and match with these guys, and we didn’t. And I think that with the combination of the turnovers and penalties, that’s the result you’re going to get,” Garoppolo said.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 8-for-14 on third down conversions. Kansas City went 6-for-9.

The 49ers are now 1-20 when they enter the fourth trailing by three or more points.

Bosa recorded his seventh sack of the season in just the seventh game of the season. Bosa and Hall of Famer Bryant Young are the the last members of the 49ers to register seven or more sacks through the team’s first seven games.

McCloud’s touchdown reception was the first of his career.

It was the 11th time in Garoppolo’s career he has thrown for 300 plus yards in a game, his first since against the Los Angeles Rams on 1/9/22 (316 yards).

UP NEXT: San Francisco travels to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in an NFC West showdown on Sunday 10/30 at 1:25pm at SoFi Stadium.

Mariotta and Falcons rushing attacks sink 49ers 28-14 in upset win

Atlanta Falcons tight end celebrates his receiving touchdown in the third quarter at Mercedez-Benz Stadium on Sunday OCT 16, 2022. (Atlanta Falcons)

by Marko Ukalovic

Injuries eventually catch up to the best teams.

The Atlanta Falcons took advantage of the San Francisco 49ers injuries on defense as they dominated the trenches in a shocking 28-14 win on Sunday afternoon at Mercedez-Benz Stadium.

San Francisco had its two-game winning streak snapped and fell to .500. Atlanta has won three out of its last four games to get to .500 after starting the season losing its first two games.

Atlanta (3-3) pulled a reversal of fortune as they pulled a page out of San Francisco’s playbook by controlling the game on the ground and their defense shutout the 49ers offense in the second half.

The Falcons rushed for 168 yards on 40 carries led by Caleb Huntley’s 59 yards on 16 carries. San Francisco on the other hand could not establish its strong running attack as it only had 60 yards on just 16 carries.

The 49ers missed Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Jimmy Ward and Javon Kinlaw on the defensive side of the ball as they were out with injuries. To make matters worse, cornerback Charvarius Ward was injured in the first half and did not return to worsen an already depleted secondary.

Atlanta’s defense made San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense one-dimensional in the second half as they pressured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into throwing two interceptions and rushed throws that ended in incompletions.

San Francisco (3-3) didn’t do itself any favors on the offense with a couple of dropped passes and penalties by the offensive line in the second half that either prevented big plays or negated them.

“When you put yourself in that hole, you can’t overcome some drops (by our receivers) that we missed I thought. There’s no room for error and that’s pretty obvious that’s self-explanatory,” Shanahan said.

Atlanta drove down the field on their opening possession going 74 yards on 11 plays that resulted in a two-yard reception by tight end MyCole Pruitt from quarterback Marcus Mariotta. It was the first opening drive for a touchdown the 49ers defense had given up this season.

The Falcons were gift wrapped their second touchdown when Jeff Wilson Jr. fumbled at his own 20-yard line. Ishiah Oliver picked up the ball and ran to the one-yard line before fumbling it in the end zone where Jaylinn Hawkins recovered it to give Atlanta a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.

“These guys believed. They understood the focus on playing a (good) team like that does a lot of differnt stuff. They (San Francisco) got some really good players, and they were locked in,” Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said.

It was the biggest deficit San Francisco had suffered this season.

San Francisco got back on track by scoring the next 14 points with a Garoppolo connecting with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk for two receiving touchdowns in the second quarter.

The first for Aiyuk came on a wide receiver screen for a 12-yard touchdown. His second was a 14-yard touchdown where he deked out a Falcons defender with a circle move to get free along the right wing where Garoppolo threw a perfect pass and Aiyuk did the rest.

It was a breakout game for Aiyuk as he led San Francisco in receiving with eight catches for 83 yards to along with his two scores. Tight end George Kittle matched Aiuyk’s production also having eight catches for 83 yards.

Atlanta regained their lead with 57 seconds left in the second quarter when Mariotta finished off an 11 play 75-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run where he outraced cornerback Sam Womack III to the corner pylon for a three-yard touchdown.

Mariotta gave the Falcons an insurance score with 8:40 left in the third quarter when he connected with tight end Kyle Pitts on a seven-yard receiving touchdown that completed the scoring in the game.

Marriota started out with a perfect 13 for 13 before finally throwing his lone incompletion in the fourth quarter. He finished 13 of 14 for 129 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also chipped in 50 yards on the ground on six carries and one rushing touchdown.

Garoppolo was hit and miss throughout the game as he finished 29 of 41 for 296 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wilson Jr. had a disappointing game only rushing for 25 yards on seven carries to go along with his fumble.

Atlanta’s ability to run the ball down successfully set up short and manageable third down situations that San Francisco’s defense wasn’t able to stop and kept the drives alive for the Falcons.

San Francisco offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey suffered a calf injury in the first half while blocking on a run play and did not return to the game.

GAME NOTES: San Francisco finished 3-for-8 on third down conversions. Atlanta was 9-for-14.

San Francisco is now 48-33-1 all time against Atlanta.

UP NEXT: San Francisco returns home to host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday 10/23 at 1:25pm.
