By Barbara Mason

Saturday evening the Las Vegas Raiders traveled to Dallas taking on the Cowboys in their final pre-season game of the 2023 season. Yes it is a pre-season game but it is also vitally important to players vying for a spot in the final 53-man roster.

Up to this point NFL teams have carried as many as 90 players. The deadline for the final roster is Tuesday August 29th. This will be the day that dreams are either realized or crushed. Every player on the field Saturday night for both teams will want to put out extraordinary effort. The Raiders picked up the loss to the Cowboys 31-16 to close out the pre season schedule.

Game wrap up: The Cowboys took the lead in the first quarter 7-0. Quarterback Will Grier rushed for two yards and the touchdown. The Raiders kicker Daniel Carlson would get Las Vegas on the board in the second quarter kicking a 44 yard field goal.

Las Vegas was within striking distance trailing 7-3. Dallas distanced themselves in the second quarter scoring a second touchdown now leading 14-3. Will Grier found Luke Schoonmaker for nine yards and the score.

The Raiders found the end zone for the first time in this game at 4:38 in the second quarter. Damien Williams rushed for 24 yards and the touchdown. Las Vegas was within striking distance 14-10.

The Cowboys refused to back down continuing with a great offensive effort. Grier threw his second touchdown of the game finding Hunter Luepke for 15 yards as the first half began to wind down giving the Cowboys a 21-10 lead.

Dallas scored that touchdown with 0.50 left on the clock. Las Vegas squeezed five plays into the final 50 seconds. The sixth play of the final first half drive for the Raiders was a Daniel Carlson 62 yard field goal. This was impressive clock management from the Raiders. The half-time score was 21-13 in favor of the Cowboys.

The Raiders were able to kick a 50 yard field goal in the third quarter keeping Las Vegas in this game 21-16. Carlson was having an amazing game. Unfortunately Las Vegas would not score again in the game.

Dallas’ quarterback on the other hand was not even close to finished. Grier scored his second rushing touchdown of the game and the Cowboys were dominating this game 28-16. Dallas finished off this game with a 59 yard Brandon Aubrey field goal.

Grier had an impressive game with two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys had 304 passing yards and 153 rushing yards. The Raiders did not fare well in this game. Vegas quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw for 178 yards and no touchdowns. They only had 97 rushing yards.

Newly acquired Dallas quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance did not get a snap under center on Saturday night. Neither Cowboys quarterbacks Dak Prescott or Lance played against the Raiders as Will Grier was under center for the entire game.

Las Vegas will kick off the regular season taking on the rival Broncos in Denver on Sunday September 10th. That game will start at 1:25 PM. The Cowboys will play on Sunday night football in New York taking on the Giants September 10th with kickoff at 5:20 PM.

SANTA CLARA–The San Francisco 49ers (1-2) closed out the preseason with a loss to their downstate foe, Los Angeles Chargers (2-1) – after making an earlier major roster move – Friday Night in the Silicon Valley.

Brock Purdy marched his 49ers down the field on their first drive, only to have it come up empty after running back Jordan Mason fumbled into the endzone for a touchback for LA.

Drive #2 for San Francisco was a little better, as Purdy took it in for himself, scoring a five yard TD. 6-0 SF, after a missed extra point attempt. The 49ers used Purdy and two other starters for two drives.

The Chargers answered back with a 75-yard touchdown run for running back Joshua Kelley. 7-6, LA after a successful extra point, and the score stood up after the first 15 minutes. The Chargers were using second and third string players.

The second quarter didn’t have much scoring, except a 24-yard Field Goal by Chargers’ kicker Cameron Dicker. 10-6 LA, then and at the half’.

In the third, Niners’ QB Sam Darnold tossed a six-yard TD to Willie Snead IV.. After a missed two-point conversion, San Francisco led by two, 12-10.

LA’s QB, Max Duggan gave his team the lead right back with his 3-yard TD pass to Hunter Kampmoyer. 17-12, Chargers.

The Chargers followed that up with a 35-yard FG by Dicker. 20-12 LAC. That was also the score after three quarters.

The Chargers added another field goal in the fourth on the foot of Dustin Hopkins (27), and the Southern California team won by 11, 23-12.

The Niners open the 2023 Season in the Steel City to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, September 10. The Chargers will host the Miami Dolphins on the same date.

The 49ers also dealt quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance came to the 49ers three years ago for three first round draft picks. Lance’s first pre season game against the Las Vegas Raiders he was sacked four times in three offensive possessions. In spite of that he came back in pre season game number two against the Denver Broncos on Aug 19th and had shown improvement. 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan already had their minds made up about dealing Lance to the Cowboys on Friday.

Purdy won the job after Lance and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt and led the 49ers toward the post season. Sam Darnold will be the second string back up who won the job struggled to get the offense moving in the first three possessions and threw for a touchdown a six yarder to Sam Snead. Purdy was 5-9 for 73 yards against the Chargers.

On the SF 49ers by David Zizmor:

#1 David Trey Lance had a better game under center against the Denver Broncos on Saturday going 12-18 for 173 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He looked like he got more traction in this outing.

#2 There was some doubt about Lance after his first pre season game against the Las Vegas Raiders bringing talk about shopping him to not making the team but all it took was one game to get back in everybody’s good graces.

#3 Brock Purdy looked like he hadn’t missed a step upon his return Saturday going 4-5 for 65 yards and had a 69 yard opening drive on ten plays that set up a kicker Jake Moody field goal good enough for 20 yards.

Niners Tame Broncos in the Silicon Valley, 21-20 on Moody’s Foot

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers (1-1) defeated the Denver Broncos (0-2) 21-20, in the closing seconds of Preseason action on the Southside of the Bay Area.

The game started with both starting QBs.(Brock Purdy & Russell Wilson) playing only one series each in the first quarter.

Purdy opened the contest passing for 65 yards (4-6) and set up a 20 yard field goal by Jake Moody. 3-0 SF.

The much maligned Wilson rallied his team with his arm (24) and feet (24), but he also had to settle for a field goal, instead of reaching the end zone. Kicker Brett Maher hit a 48-yarder, tying the contest at 3-3 after 15 minutes of the contest.

In the second quarter, Denver, led by Jarrett Stidham, positioned Maher for another FG (34) to take the lead, 6-3.

The Broncos were on a drive seconds before the half, when Stidham’s 50-yard pass to Jalen Virgil was stopped at the Niners’ one-yard line. Unfortunately for Denver, the halftime horn sounded before they could spike the ball. 6-3 Broncos at the Half.

The third stanza had some paydirt action, as both teams got past each other’s endzones.

The Niners capitalized on the Broncos pre-half miscue, and scored on an 11-yard TD pass to Jack Colletto; however, the extra point was missed by Moody. SF led 9-6 at that point of play.

After the 49ers muffed a punt return, Denver recovered the ball and subsequently scored on a eight-yard run by Jaleel McLaughlin. !3-9 Denver is how the third quarter ended.

The final 15 was exciting as Tre Lance was in position to pull off a game winning drive, although Kyle Shannahan had a different plan.

Moody’s foot came into play again, as he converted a 43-yard FG, pulling the Niners within one, 13-12.

However, Broncos’ QB Ben DiNucci tossed a TD pass to McLaughlin, extending their slim lead to eight, 20-12.

Trey Lance got the Santa Clara County crowd excited with his 22-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Latu, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to connect on the two-point conversion, which would have tied the game.

After Denver turned the ball over on downs, the aforementioned TreyFactor Drive happened, but instead of him being the hero of the night with a game-winning TD pass, Shanahan had him down the ball multiple times, to allow Moody to be the MAN.

Moody booted in the 32-yard winner, and the 49ers were the victors, 21-20 on a beautiful Northern California night.

The 49ers are in action again next Friday, August 25, as they host the Los Angeles Chargers at 7pm PDT. The Denver Broncos return to the Mile High City, where they will host the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday, August 26.
