OAKLAND — The Raiders end their 2019 regular season home schedule in Week 15 as they will host the visiting Jacksonville Jaguars at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Sunday Dec. 15. This will mark the first time since 2016 that these teams have met each other in the regular season, when the Raiders traveled to northeast Florida and defeated the Jaguars 33-16 for Oakland’s first-ever road win in the series.

The all-time series is tied at four games apiece, with the Raiders riding a three-game winning streak dating back to 2012.

Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m. PT with Kevin Harlan and Trent Green calling the action from the booth, and John Schriffen patrolling the sidelines.

The Raiders took one on the chin last Sunday, losing to the Tennessee Titans, 42-21 at home to fall to 6-7 on the year.

In the contest, quarterback Derek Carr threw for 263 yards on 25-of-34 passes and two touchdowns with 115.2 passer rating. It was the fourth time this season that Carr had a passer rating of 115.0 in a game.

Tight end Darren Waller registered six catches for 73 yards in the game. Waller, who has 72 catches for 880 yards, became just the third tight end in franchise history to surpass 70 catches in a season. With three games left in the year, Waller is on pace for his first career 1,000-yard season.

The Raiders didn’t have the services of talented rookie running back Josh Jacobs, who sat out the game with a shoulder injury. Jacobs, who is the sixth leading rusher in the NFL with 1,061 yards, is expected to return against the Jaguars.

Defensively, defensive tackle Maurice Hurst provided the lone bright spot for the Silver and Black last Sunday. Hurst registered his first career interception off a tipped pass from Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, and returned it 55 yards to put the Raiders in position to score their first touchdown of the game.

Jacksonville is currently riding a five-game losing streak, after dropping their latest game to the Los Angeles Chargers, 45-10 at home in Week 14. The Jaguars allowed Chargers running back Austin Ekeler to explode in the game, racking up 213 yards from scrimmage (rushing for 101 yards on 8 carries, and 112 yards receiving on 4 catches). Ekeler’s 84-yard touchdown catch in the game was the longest completion in quarterback Philip Rivers’ 16-year career.

Following Sunday’s game, the Raiders will finish up their 2019 regular season schedule on the road with games against the Chargers and Broncos in Week 16 and 17.

Raiders couldn’t remember the Titans in 42-21 loss

By Jeremy Kahn

OAKLAND — With their playoff hopes riding on this game, the Oakland Raiders looked really good in the beginning of the game; however, the second half was a totally different story.

Ryan Tannehill went 21-for-27 for 391 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and the Tennessee Titans defeated the Raiders 42-21 before a crowd of 52,760 at the Coliseum.

Things started off well, as Tannehill threw a pass that Dion Jordan tipped and Maurice Hurst caught and returned 55 yards to the Titans 24-yard line.

That was my first interception since I was in high school, (Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA, said Hurst.

The former Michigan Wolverines All-American did have a fumble recovery versus the University of Central Florida in the Wolverines season-opening win in Ann Arbor on September 10, 2016.

Derek Carr got the Raiders on the board two plays later, as he found Darren Waller for a seven-yard touchdown pass that gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead.

Tannehill then began to drive the Titans down the field, as he came up with a big pass play when he connected with Khari Blasingame for a 24-yard completion and then two plays later, Derrick Henry scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 12-yard scamper that tied up the game.

After the ensuing Raiders series was stopped, Tannehill gave the Titans the lead just one play after the AJ Cole.

Tannehill found A.J. Brown for a 91-yard touchdown pass that split the Raiders secondary down the middle.

Carr and the Raiders did not sulk, as they immediately tied up the game, when Carr found Rico Gallford for his first NFL touchdown reception.

The back and forth scoring continued on the Titans next series, as Tannehill found Brown for a 16-yard touchdown.

Carr and the Raiders tied up the game on their next series, as he drove the team down the field with the key play being a 26-yard pass from Carr to Waller that ended at the Titans one-yard line.

Foster Moreau caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Carr for the Raiders third touchdown of the afternoon, and unfortunately their final points of the game.

Tannehill and the Titans began to drive down the field again; however, they were kept off the scoreboard, when Ryan Succops 42-yard field goal attempt hit the goalpost and the two teams went into the locker room all tied up at 21 apiece.

The two teams played punt the ball away on the first drives of the second half, including the first two three-and-outs of the game.

Following the second Cole punt of the third quarter, the Titans scored on a 10-yard touchdown run from Henry and never looked back.

Once again, the Raiders were forced to punt and the Titans capitalized on it, as Tannehill made it 35-21 early in the fourth quarter, when he found Jonnu Smith for a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Just two plays after the Tannehill touchdown pass to Smith, the Titans salted the game away, as Carrs pass to Waller was fumbled and returned 46 yards for a touchdown by Jayon Brown to close out the scoring.

After another Cole punt, the Titans could not add any more points, as they were forced to punt after a three-and-out.

The Raiders began to drive down the field, as Carr got them down to the two-yard line, when he found DeAndre Washington pass for 24 yards down to the Titans two-yard line.

Washington was forced into starting at tailback after rookie sensation Josh Jacobs was declared inactive.

I give him a lot of credit. He was really in tears wanting to play, said Jon Gruden.

In his place, Washington gained 53 yards on 14 carries and caught six passes for 43 yards on the afternoon.

We actually found out before the game. Going into the week we knew that he was banged up, said Washington.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, they were unable to cash in and were forced to turn the ball over on downs.

The Titans took over and after two first downs that clinched the game, the Raiders saw them on the short end of their third straight loss.

During the recent three-game slide, the Raiders have been outscored 116-33 in losses to the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and now the Titans.

NOTES: With Carrs two touchdown passes, he has now thrown touchdown in all 41 games in his NFL career. The 41 game are the ninth-most in NFL history through a players six seasons.

It was the fifth touchdown of the season for Moreau, as he leads all rookie tight ends in the league.

UP NEXT: In what will be the last home game in Oakland before the move to Las Vegas, the Jacksonville Jaguars will come to the Coliseum. The Jaguars are coming off a 45-10 shellacking at home versus the Los Angeles Chargers.

Garoppolo Outduels Brees in Instant Classic 48-46

By: Joe Lami

The Niners walked off the field with the win and control of the number one seed as Robbie Gould’s 30-yard buzzer-beating field goal flew through the uprights with zeros on the clock in the Superdome on Sunday. The 48-46 shootout was an instant classic and the game of the year that included seven different lead changes.

“That’s as cool of a game as I’ve ever been part of,” said Kyle Shanahan.

Jimmy Garoppolo was elite in his best game as an NFL quarterback. Throwing for 349 yards, four touchdowns, for a 131.7 passer rating, Garoppolo led the Niners past the Saints in the Superdome despite his defense giving up 46 points. His day was nearly perfect minus a third-quarter interception that bounced in the air off of Emmanuel Sanders’ hands.

“You gotta give Jimmy Garoppolo credit. That was a shootout, and he got the last shot, said Richard Sherman.”

In the last month, Garoppolo’s averaged a 125.8 passer rating with three of those contests coming against division leaders Green Bay, Baltimore, and New Orleans. He also now sits with 25 touchdowns on the season, three shy of Lamar Jackson for the league lead.

Garoppolo’s final shot came after the Saints scored a go-ahead touchdown to go up by one. Due to a missed two-point conversion for the Saints earlier in the first quarter, New Orleans was forced to go for two again and were stuffed. Jimmy was given 53 seconds and three timeouts to march into field goal range for the win.

After a short pass and two incompletions, the Niners faced fourth and two when Garoppolo found Kittle, who made what’s become a typical “George Kittle type” play. Carrying two defenders and getting faced masked along the way, Kittle picked up 39 yards and an extra 14 for the penalty setting up the game-winning kick.

The 49ers’ defense is lucky for how well Garoppolo and the offense played. They were gashed all day by the Saints’ offense. Drew Brees had Garoppolo-type stats, throwing for 349, five touchdowns, and one rushing. He had one more passing TD than Jimmy, but Emmanuel Sanders stole that one when he threw to Raheem Mostert on a trick play in the second quarter.

Receivers on both sides of the ball were benefactors to the quarterback play. Michael Thomas led New Orleans, catching 11 balls for 134 yards and a touchdown. Jarred Cook was Brees’ early option, catching the first two New Orleans’ touchdowns before leaving the game with a concussion. Tre’Quan Smith and Josh Hill caught the other touchdowns.

Emmanuel Sanders led the Niners with seven catches for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also threw the 35-yard dart to Mostert in his best game as a Niner. Kittle finished with 76 yards, after man-handling the Saints for 39 on the last drive. Kendrick Bourne caught two touchdowns on three receptions for 18 yards.

Deebo Samuel continues to break out and appear like a future pro-bowler for the red and gold. The second-round rookie caught five balls for 76 yards. He also rushed for 33 yards on two carries.

The Niners also rushed the ball exceptional again. Mostert rushed for 69 yards on ten carries and scored on the ground as well. Matt Brieda, coming off his ankle injury, was limited but looked good in spurts, rushing for 54 yards on six carries.

There were plenty of holes and things of concern for San Francisco, but it was all over-shadowed by Garoppolo’s play. The special teams allowed 192 yards to Denote Harris on kick and punt returns. The undrafted rookie had 14 go for touchdowns while at Assumption College.

Most concerning, center, Weston Richburg went down with what appeared to be a serious knee and ankle injury in the third quarter. After being carted off the field, Ben Garland filled-in his shoes and was decent. But losing Richburg for the remainder of the season could be critical for the playoff-stretch.

The Niners finished their toughest stretch of the season, going 2-1 against the divisional leaders and now control their destiny for home-field advantage. They’ll wrap up a playoff position tonight if the Rams lose to the Seahawks.

Previewing the Saints: How Will the Niners Fare?

photo from sfgate.com file: San Francisco 49er tight end George Kittle (85) looks to see if he made it over the line of scrimmage for a first down during the season opener against the Tampa Bay Bucs on September 8th

By: Joe Lami

The Niners are two-thirds through their hellish stretch, and they’ve managed to go 1-1. Unfortunately, the loss last Sunday to Baltimore proved to be critical in the NFC West race. Both the Seahawks and 49ers go into week 14 with a 10-2 record, but Seattle owns the tiebreaker, meaning San Francisco is currently the five-seed in the NFC. They’re still four games remaining, but the Niners can’t afford another slip-up.

This weekend’s game against the Saints proves to be vital towards their chances at the division and a potential first-round bye. The Saints come into the contest with a 10-2 record and appear to be a team with Super Bowl aspirations. However, they’ve cruised through an easy schedule, not facing a team above .500 since September.

Drew Brees has been excellent since returning from a hand injury that forced him out five weeks. He’s gone 4-1 and thrown ten touchdowns to just two interceptions thanks to some great protection up-front. However, the Saints could be thin on the left side of their offensive line. Former Stanford standout, Andreas Peat has already been listed out with a forearm injury, while Terron Armstead is listed as questionable.

Without two of Brees’ biggest hogs upfront, the Niners’ pass rush will be salivating at the mouth to get after a pocket-passing QB. Because of the ferocious pass rush the Niners bring, I expect Brees to get the ball out fast and target Alvin Kamara. Kamara has 1,031 all-purpose yards this year, with 444 coming through the air on 63 catches. He’s also rushed for 587 yards. Brees won’t be afraid to dump the ball off to the elusive running back.

If given time to throw, Michael Thomas becomes the biggest concern for San Francisco. Thomas is the best receiver in the NFL right now, and it’s not close. The league leader in receptions (110) and receiving yards (1,290), he’s on pace to shatter New Orleans’ records and the single-season NFL record. He’s also within striking distance of Calvin Johnson’s single-season yards record if he balls out the next couple of games.

Richard Sherman returned to full practice on Friday for the Niners and will be ready to go, but unfortunately, Jaquiski Tartt will be out due to broken ribs. The good news for the red and gold is that everyone else, but Joe Staley, returned to full practice on Friday. Staley is still listed as questionable with a broken finger.

The Saints’ most dangerous threat might be Taysom Hill. The swiss-army knife displayed his unique speed and skill with two touchdowns last week on Thanksgiving. The Niners obviously struggle with speed at QB, as Kyler Murray, Russ Wilson, and Lamar Jackson have indicated. If Hill gets his hands on the ball, he could be a game wrecker.

Defensively, the Saints have good numbers across the board. They’re not elite, but they’re nothing to scoff at either. They’re top 12 in every significant category, but appear to struggle with the run more than the pass. With Matt Brieda expected to return for the Niners, they’re going to test the Saints run-defense ability like they’ve had with every other team all year. San Francisco brings the #2 run offense in the league to the Big Easy.

The Saints are, for sure, a contender in the NFC, but they haven’t been challenged since week three. Are they going to be able to handle a 49ers’ team that’s playing their third playoff-caliber opponent in a row?

Raiders look to end losing streak, return home to host the Titans

OAKLAND — After losing back-to-back road games in which they were outscored 64-12 in both contests, the Raiders will look to get back into winning column as they host the visiting Tennessee Titans in Week 14 action at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Sunday’s game will mark the first of the final two home games this season, both of which are against AFC South opponents.

This will be the fourth time in the last five years that these two teams have met, the first matchup in Oakland since 2013. The Raiders currently own a three-game winning streak against the Titans, dating back to 2015. Oakland’s most recent victory over Tennessee, a 26-16 in Nashville in 2017, gave the Raiders a 26-20 edge in the all-time series.

The Raiders are 11-2 at home against the Titans all-time.

Kickoff for this matchup is set for 1:25 p.m. PT on CBS, with Greg Gumbel, Trent Green and Melanie Collins on the call.

In Week 13, the Raiders were embarrassed again on the road, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-9, to drop their record to 6-6 on the season. Oakland lost to the New York Jets, 34-3, in East Rutherford, NJ in Week 12.

The Black and Silver lining in the loss to the Chiefs was rookie running back Josh Jacobs registering his fifth 100-yard game of the year, tying Mark van Eeghen for the fourth-most 100-yard rushing performances during a single season in franchise history. With his 104 rushing yards on 17 carries, Jacobs surpassed 1,000 yards for the season and became just the 11th player in franchise history to accomplish that feat.

Jacobs is the only rookie in franchise history to record a 1,000 yards in a single season with 1,061 yards through 12 games, good for fourth-most in the league.

Tight end Darren Waller was Oakland’s top receiving threat against Kansas City, hauling in 7 catches for 100 yards. For the season, Waller has been the Raiders best receiving option, leading the team in receptions (66) and receiving yards (807) through Week 13.

Waller is second on the team in receiving touchdowns (3) behind wide receiver Tyrell Williams.

Sunday’s game could have a playoff-type feel to it, as both teams desperately need to win keep pace for a wild card berth in the AFC playoffs. Oakland and Tennessee are currently behind the Pittsburgh Steelers (7-5) for the final berth with four games remaining in the season.

The Titans (7-5) are currently riding a three-game winning streak, and are coming off a huge 31-17 win on the road against their AFC South rival, the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who is 5-1 since taking over for an ineffective Marcus Mariota following Tennessee’s 2-4 start, has thrown for 1,602 yards, with 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Tannehill has a passer rating of 113.9 in his six starts this season.

Tennessee’s running game is spearheaded by running back Derrick Henry.

He, like Jacobs, is a former Alabama running back that has turned into a vital piece for his team’s offense this season. There’s a good chance that both running backs will be representing their teams at the Pro Bowl at the end of the season.

The four-year pro is currently third in the NFL in rushing with 1,140 yards and is tied for second with Green Bay’s Aaron Jones with 11 rushing touchdowns among running backs.

Henry rumbled through Indianapolis, rushing for 149 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown. During the Titans’ three-game winning streak, Henry has rushed for 496 yards and 5 touchdowns on 68 carries proving that he’s Tennessee’s workhorse.

Henry, who has been dealing with a hamstring issue, didn’t practice for the Titans on Wednesday.

Defensively, the Titans are the 7th-ranked scoring defense, yielding just 19.5 points per game this season and could pose a problem for the Raiders. Oakland is averaging just 19.8 points per game this season.

Second-year linebacker Harold Landry III registered one of Tennessee’s three sacks on Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Landry III leads the Titans with 9.0 sacks on the season.

Cornerback Logan Ryan and safety Kevin Byard are tied for the team lead with four interceptions apiece. Ryan and Byard each recorded an interception against the Colts.

Following Sunday’s matchup, the Raiders will host the Jacksonville Jaguars in their final home game in Oakland in Week 15. The Titans will return home for a divisional matchup against the Houston Texans.
