#1 The “Hudson Valley Rivalry” the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils meet up for the first time in 11 years and it’s their seventh meeting in playoff history.

#2 The Pittsburgh Penguins missed the playoffs for the first time in 16 years the Penguins missed the Stanley Cup. As a consequence the Pens fired their team president Brian Burke, general manager Ron Hextall, assistant general manager Chris Taylor all dismissed on Friday.

#3 Another team who didn’t reach the post season were the Washington Capitals who parted ways with head coach Peter Laviolette who finished over three season with a 115-78-27 record.

#4 Matthew Barzal is expected back with the New York Islanders after missing the last 23 games of the regular season. Barzal will be in the line up in game 1 this coming Monday in Carolina against the Hurricanes.

#5 Talk about the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid who were the Art Ross and Rocket Richard Trophies. McDavid led the NHL in points (153) and goals (64).

#1 The New York Rangers Chris Kreider and Tyler Motte scored a goal each in the Rangers win over the Tampa Bay Lightning to notch closer to second place in the Metro Division. The Rangers picked up a 6-3 win at Madison Square Garden and are now just three points behind first place New Jersey Devils.

#2 The Calgary Flames are in a tie with the Winnipeg Jets for a second wild card for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. The Flames defeated the Jets 3-1 at Canada Life Centre Wednesday night. You wanted to say something Jacob Marston.

#3 The Edmonton Oilers are having a great season and their closing in on first place in the NHL Pacific Division picking up their sixth straight win defeating the Anaheim Ducks 3-1. The Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reached 100 points and goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 27 shots. The Oilers extended their points streak to 12 games.

#4 The Minnesota Wild Kirill Kaprizov got to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Mar 8th due to a lower back injury. Kaprizov wore a non contact sweater during the practice. Kaprizov will sit out Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However Kaprizov could return on Saturday against the St Louis Blues.

#5 The Washington Capitals will miss their first post season for the first time in eight years It’s the first time the Caps have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2013-14 season. The Capitals played .500 hockey (34-34-9) but was not good enough to make the playoffs. The Caps are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.

On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 Lots happening between the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night. The game went into overtime that saw the Flames Jonathan Huberdeau score the tying goal in the third period. The the Flames Tyler Toffoli scored the winning goal at 3:27 in overtime. The Canucks Aidan McDonough scored his first NHL goal but the Canucks fell short in OT 5-4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

#2 The Buffalo Sabres came back to defeat the New York Rangers in overtime 3-2. Mostly thanks to the strong defensive goaltending of Devon Levi who stopped 31 Rangers shots on Friday night. This was the 21 year old’s first NHL game and Levi help keep the Rangers out of the Nets for the most part in the a close game.

#3 The Winnipeg Jets made it clear they were the dominant team against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night with a four goal 6-2 win at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. The Jets Mark Scheifele scored his 39th goal of the season giving him his most goals in a season and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots ending a brief two game losing streak.

#4 The Dallas Stars Jason Robertson scored four points with three assists and one goal in the Stars 5-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. For Robertson this was a season scoring record with 95 points, 42 goals and 53 assists. This was the first time the Stars have won consecutive games since Mar 11-13.

#5 Matt, two more games for the Pittsburgh Penguins Kris Letang to reach 1000 games he did not play on Saturday, Letang is just two games short and Letang after some very difficult injuries and two strokes in 17 years of NHL play has arrived at the 1000 game plateau that’s saying a lot for the fight that Letang has been through.

#1 The Florida Panthers came back in the third period to tie it up 2-2 and won it in overtime with a goal by the Panthers Brandon Montour at 1:41 as Florida gets by in a one goal win 3-2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

#2 The New York Islanders improved their chances in the Eastern Conference in the wild card race with a 2-1 over the Washington Capitals in Washington at the Capital One Center on Wednesday night. The Islanders Pierre Engvail scored for the second straight game. Islanders goaltender IIya Sorokin stopped stopped 25 shots and was key in the Isles win.

#3 The New York Rangers Filip Chytil signed a four year deal with the Rangers worth $17.75 million. The contract at a yearly salary is $4.4375. Chytil scored 22 goals, 20 assists, for 42 points in 66 games. The Rangers like his game and what he has done and wanted to get Chytil signed as he could have been a free agent at the end of the season.

#4 The Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews might not be with the Blackhawks in the closing days of the regular season. Toews is a three time Stanley Cup champion and has been ill with long Covid 19 and has been out of action since Jan 28th and said he will be taking time off on Feb 21. Toews had missed the entire 2021-22 season.

#5 Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators will be out for the rest of the regular season due to an upper body injury Chabot who plays defenseman had to leave on Monday after getting hit the by the Florida Panthers Givani Smith in the third period in a 5-2 win. Chabot did return to the game but after the game head coach DJ Smith said Chabot would not be available Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

#1 Matt, talk about Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery this is his second team in the NHL he first coached the Dallas Stars before being fired by them in 2019 and has done a bang up job as head coach leading the club to a 26-6-4. Talk about the job Montgomery has done building up the Bruins?

#2 Under Vancouver Canucks (19-26-3) new head coach Rick Tocchet he’s 2-1 so far and in the first win he handled the Chicago Blackhawks rather handily 5-2 and in the second game in Seattle the Canucks got crushed 6-1, and on Friday the Canucks picked up a three goal win over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2. It’s early to tell but the Canucks critics say should have held onto Bruce Boudreau and let him finish out the season.

#3 Matt, are the Toronto Maple Leafs going to miss Austin Matthews something awful, Matthews is out with a knee sprain for three weeks, Matthews is second in goals, and is third in points. Matthews injured himself on Wednesday against the New York Rangers during a 3-2 overtime win.

#4 The Florida Panthers Aleksander Barkov will replace Matthews at center at the NHL All Star game in Florida on Sat Feb 4th. Barkov is second on the Panthers with 43 points with 13 goals and 30 assists. He should get a good ovation when he is introduced in Sunrise next Saturday.

#5 Despite winning seven of their last ten games the Chicago Blackhawks (15-28-4) and defeating one of the tougher teams in the NHL the Calgary Flames (23-17-9) 5-1 on Thursday night in Calgary the Blackhawks are looking to deal stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews each player is in the final year of their eight year contract.

#1 Damon Severson of the New Jersey Devils scored at 2:17 in overtime to help New Jersey get a 4-3 win in overtime against the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center in Newark. Severson stole the puck away from the Rangers Alex Lafreniere and went two on one with it against Nico Heschier to score the gamer.

#2 Columbus Blue Jackets Kirill Marchenko picked up his first NHL hat trick that help defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 in a shootout at Nationwide Arena in Columbus on Saturday. Kent Johnson contributed with the game winning goal in the fifth round of the shootout stanza for the win.

#3 On Friday night the Nashville Predators Ryan McDonagh got a first goal of the season after playing in 31 games. McDonagh got a pass from Ryan Johansen and avoided the Washington Capitals goaltender Charlie Lingren’s left pad with a back handed goal to beat the Caps 4-3.

#4 The Florida Panthers Aaron Ekblad scored two power play goals as the Carolina Panthers defeated the Detroit Red Wings at Little Casers Pizza Arena on Friday 3-2.

#5 In a game that’s coming up on Saturday night at SAP in San Jose the Boston Bruins who are 30-4-4 face off with the San Jose Sharks 12-20-8. The Bruins always show up but can the Sharks play up to the level tonight?

Two late goals lift Rangers past Sharks 2-1

A goal by Julien Gauthier late in the third period broke a scoreless tie, eventually helping the New York Rangers earn a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks Saturday at SAP Center.

It was the Rangers’ third win in their last five games, going 3-1-1 in that span.

Gauthier lit the lamp with 6:03 remaining in the third period, tipping a shot by Jacob Trouba from the point and steering it past Sharks goaltender James Reimer. It was Gauthier’s third goal of the season.

With Reimer pulled in favor of a sixth attacker, Adam Fox picked up an empty-net tally at 18:53, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Logan Couture scored for the Sharks at 19:43, breaking up Igor Shesterkin’s bid for a shutout. Couture was positioned at the right of the crease, where he took a pass from Tomas Hertl and beat Shesterkin with a wrist shot for his ninth goal.

Shesterkin stopped 21 of 22 San Jose shots, while Reimer made 42 saves.

San Jose forward Nico Sturm left the game late in the first period after being boarded by Rangers defenseman Ryan Carpenter, but returned in the second period. Carpenter received a 2-minute minor for the infraction.

Former San Jose forward Barclay Goodrow of the Rangers made his first appearance at SAP Center since the Sharks traded him to Tampa Bay in February of 2020. And Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro reached the personal milestone of 200 NHL games played.

The Sharks host the Ottawa Senators on Monday nigh for a 7:30 pm.

#3 The roof further caved in the third and final period after the Red Wings scored four goals and pretty ran away with a three goal 7-4 win at SAP Center on Thursday night.

#4 Sharks goaltender James Reimer faced 20 shots saving 14. Was this game for Reimer a game where the Red Wings picked up on his skill set and he ended up facing a barrage of goals that just couldn’t stop or he just simply didn’t get any help up front?

#5 The New York Rangers who had their own set of struggles comes on into SAP Center on Saturday night. The Rangers are 5-3-2 in their last ten. The Rangers know when they step out on the ice it’s not going easy to win games much like the Sharks who had their share of struggles.

#1 The Colorado Avalanche’s right winger Valeri Nichuskin will be out for a month after having ankle surgery. Nichuskin has sat out four games since he last played against the New York Rangers on Oct 25th. Also the Aves defensemen Bowen Byram and Samuel Girard both have lower body injuries during back to back games in Finland against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

#2 The Boston Bruins cut Mitchell Miller this week after finding out more information about Miller’s past. When Miller was 14 years old Miller called Isaiah Meyer-Crothers a black classmate the N word, gave him candy after wiping it inside a urinal. Mitchell hit Crothers and bullied him. Bruins team president Cam Neely apologized to the Meyer-Crothers family saying he was sorry this signing made you feel unseen and unheard.

#3 Indianapolis Colts assistant quarterbacks coach Parks Frazier will help with the offensive play calling as named this week by Colts head coach Jeff Saturday. Colts owner Robert Irsay fired former head coach Frank Reich naming Saturday as head coach and Frazier has never play called the offense in an NFL game before. They will be working their first game together against the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday in Allegiant Stadium.

#4 The Indianapolis Colts became another NFL team that did not hire a minority coach. Saturday said of his hiring “you’ve got to earn your place here” Saturday has no NFL coaching experience compared to many minority head coaches who would have liked the opportunity to coach the Colts.

#5 Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant and a longtime Washington Commanders fan said that he wants in on the team’s ownership. As the Commanders owner Dan Snyder has put the team up for sale amongst the scandals that involved the team. Durant says in a perfect world he would like to be involved with the team. Durant said he heard that Amazon owner Jeff Bezos and Jay Z might also join the partnership.
