Friday night the Sacramento Kings (6-10) took on the New York Knicks (8-9) followed by a scheduled second game against the Knicks Sunday evening. The Knicks have had a very solid start at 8-8 and much of their success had been attributed to Head Coach Tom Thibodeau.

In six years the Knicks had gone through seven coaches and now it looks like the Knicks have found the fit that they have so desperately looked for. While it is early in the season the Knicks are looking very good.

The Kings on the other hand have had some struggles and snapped a four game losing streak at Golden One Center with a 103-94 win over the Knicks to improve their record to 6-10. This game will present a challenge for the Kings because they struggled against drop schemes, a scheme that the Knicks run more than any other type of defensive scheme.

The good news for Sacramento is that they have one of the best young cores in the league in De’Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton. This duo is indeed impressive. Fox is coming off a career high 43 point and 13-assist effort while Haliburton is just 13 games into his career and already averaging 11 points and 5 assists per game.

Fox has said that Haliburton is built for this game. The maturity and skill that he plays with belies the fact that this is his rookie year. He, in fact, looked like a second or third year player. These two guys mutually admire each other and they work together with an uncanny ease and skill.

They are the bright spot on this team despite the struggles they are having. A lot was expected from both of them in this game. Another Kings player that has slipped under the radar is Richaun Holmes who is a stand-out. He is averaging 14.0 and shooting 76.9 percent. There are not many players out there that work as hard or efficiently on the offensive glass and he has a great pick-and-roll chemistry with the guards. He is another weapon that the Kings have on their squad.

The Knicks are coming in on a three game winning streak while the Kings are struggling with a four game slide losing a couple to the Clippers, and one to New Orleans and one to Portland. The Matchup predictor has the Kings with a 60.5 % edge over the Knicks at 39.5%.

This was a battle with the Kings leading at one point 23-17 in the first quarter. The Knicks began to pull a small lead as the half came to an end 54-49. The Kings Julius Randle led in scoring points with 14 after two quarters and the Kings had a nice showing from three of their starting players. Tyrese Haliburton had 13 points after a quiet start and De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes both turned in a nice first half showing with 11 points for each of them.

After trailing by 5 points at the half, the Kings took a 76-72 lead to end the third quarter. The King really turned it on in the fourth quarter although the Knicks did pull close on a number of occasions. The Kings finished the Knicks off in the final minutes, in a great nine point win for Sacramento. The Kings got impressive performances from Fox with 22 points, Barnes with 21 and 16 from Haliburton.

The Kings will next take on the Magic Wednesday in a road game. Tipoff is at 4:00 in Orlando.

New York Knicks’ defense sends Warriors down to defeat 119-104

The visiting New York Knicks used their NBA best defense to stun the Warriors 119-104 Thursday night at the Chase Center. The Warriors, playing their third game in four nights, could not get their offense working against New York.

The Knicks, the lowest-scoring team in the NBA with about 101 points per game, scored 40 points in the first quarter. The Warriors scored 31 but trailed by nine after the first 12 minutes. The Warriors had to scramble to put points on the board as New York’s defense was too tough to crack.

The Warriors second unit started the second quarter. Eric Paschall tallied the Warriors first eight points. The Warriors’ defense was able to slow down the Knicks’ offense. Slowly, Golden State clawed their way back.

The Knicks led 55-50. Steph Curry knocked down a three and followed by a two-point bucket to tie the game at 55. The Warriors didn’t know at the time that it would be the closest they would come to take the lead.

New York scored the next six points to lead 61-55 with 1:04 left in the first half. With the Warriors on defense, the referees called a technical foul on Draymond Green. Green was not near anyone.

It was Draymond’s second technical, and by NBA rules, he had to leave the game. The Warriors learned that Green was yelling at James Wiseman and not the referee. Even though it was a mistake, Draymond was finished for the night.

The Warriors hoped they could get the offense going in the second half without him. The Warriors missed his presence as they looked out of sync. The Knicks were able to cruise to victory. 

The Knicks won the third quarter 26-19. Curry did not score in the quarter. New York increased the lead to sixteen in the fourth quarter. They led 97-81. The Warriors could not catch up. The Knicks win 119-104.

Game Notes and Stats: The Knicks, as mentioned above, are the lowest-scoring team in the NBA. They are the best team in the NBA as they allow just 102.7 points per game against them. They have the best three-point defense in the league, too.

The Warriors were nine-for 38 from behind the three-point arc. The referees had their whistles blowing all night. They called the teams for 55 fouls. The Knicks committed 29 and the Warriors 26. The Knicks had 41 free throws from the line and the Warriors 39. 

Curry led the Warriors with 30 points. Andrew Wiggins had 17, James Wiseman 15, Kelly Oubre, Jr. 7, Eric Paschall 12. Draymond tallied three points and had eight assists. He has one of the best basketball IQs in the game. Once he left, the Warriors offense fell by the wayside.

All five Knicks’ starters were in double figures. R.J. Barrett had a career-high 28 points. Julius Randle missed a triple-double. Randle had 16 points, 17 rebounds, and nine assists. Mitchell Robinson had 18 points and eight rebounds. Reggie Bullock, who averages 28% on three-point shots, connected on four threes. Elfrid Payton had 15. Former Warrior, Alec Burks, had 11 in helping the Knicks defeat his old club. 

With the loss, the Warriors are 8-7 for the year. The Knicks are now 8-8.

The Warriors meet the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City Saturday afternoon. The game will start at 2 pm.

A dreary season continues for the Golden State Warriors, as they fell to the visiting Sacramento Kings 100-79 Sunday at Chase Center.

The 79 points matched a season low for the struggling Warriors.

Bogdan Bogdanovich led the Kings (12-14) with 25 points, along with 19 points by Buddy Hield.

The Kings defeated Golden State (5-23) for only the fourth time in the last 25 games between the neighboring rivals, going back to 2013-14.

Willie Cauley-Stein was the Warriors’ top scorer with 14 points.

Golden State has used 14 different lineups this season. Damion Lee started at the 2-guard — his first career start as a Warrior — and Glenn Robinson III returned to small forward. Lee scored 10 points in the first half.

Warriors forward Eric Paschall missed his second straight game with left hip soreness, but Coach Steve Kerr told the press corps he anticipates Paschall’s return on Wednesday at Portland.

Sacramento led 51-42 at halftime and put the game away by outscoring the Warriors 28-17 in the third quarter.

The 18 points scored by Golden State in the first quarter was not their season low for the opening period; that happened on Oct. 14 with 14 points in the opening 12 minutes against Phoenix.

Mired in last place in the NBA Pacific Division, the Warriors trail Atlanta, New York and New Orleans (6-21) for the league’s worst record.

Knicks Stun Kings, Win 103-101

The Sacramento Kings are flying. After taking down formidable opponents in Texas in the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, the Kings came home and defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder. So, the Kings were coming off a three-game win streak and facing the dysfunctional New York Knicks in Golden 1 Center on Wednesday night.

In the first quarter, the Kings did what they should have. Behind the scoring from Buddy Hield (14) and Nemanja Bjelica (6), the Kings jumped out to an early 32-20 lead over the Knicks. The Knicks leading scorer was Julius Randle, who managed to score 9 points. The Kings managed to shoot 71.4% from downtown and that played a big role in the early lead. Going into the second quarter, the Kings had a comfortable 32-20 lead.

In the second quarter, the Knicks made a little run at the Kings’ lead. Thanks to more scoring from Julius Randle, the Knicks put a dent in the Kings’ 12-point first-quarter lead. The Knicks put up 25 second quarter points to make it a 54-45. Buddy Hield continued to torch the Knicks and finished the first half with 22 points. Nemanja Bjelica followed behind Hield as the King’s second-leading scorer with 9 points. The Knicks were led by Julius Randle who was the game’s second-leading scorer with 17 first-half points. The Kings didn’t play their best first half of the year, but considering the opponent, it got the job done. In the second half, the Kings would look to put away the worst team in the NBA.

The third quarter was not the best for the Kings. Playing against the worst team in the NBA, the Kings were unable to increase their lead. In fact, their lead decreased by one point in the quarter as the Knicks outscored the Kings 27-26 in the third. Buddy Hield added 5 points to his total in the third to bring his total to 27 on the night. Julius Randal continued his hot hand in the game to give him 22 on the night. The Kings would take a 80-72 lead into the final quarter of action.

In the fourth quarter, things got a little dicey for the Kings. The Knicks, the worst team in the NBA, managed to make up the deficit coming into the quarter and tie the game at 93 with 5:15 remaining in the game. The Kings had to get back to work if they wanted to keep their win streak alive. Unfortunately for Kings fans, they weren’t able to do that. The Knicks came roaring back in the fourth to beat the Kings.

It was easily the worst loss of the season for the Kings, who should have defeated the Knicks. Julius Randal led the victorious Knicks with 24 points followed by Elfrid Payton with 16. Leading the Kings in defeat was Buddy Hield with 34 points followed by Harrison Barnes with 15. The Kings and Luke Walton will remember this loss. In a game against the worst team in the NBA the Kings couldn’t hold an 8 point lead going into the final quarter. The final in Sacramento was the Kings 101 and the Knicks 103.

Up Next: The Kings travel to San Francisco to play the Warriors on Sunday evening at 5:30 pm PST.

The Knicks stay West and play the Denver Nuggets on Sunday at 7 pm CST.

Knicks snap 10-game losing skid with 124-122 win over Warriors in OT

The Golden State Warriors wrapped up its brief, two-game homestand with a game with the New York Knicks at Chase Center on Wednesday night. Both teams were equally lowly so this contest was a battle of bottom feeders.

GSW’s starting lineup featured D’Angelo Russell, Glenn Robinson III, Eric Paschall, Draymond Green and Willie Cauley-Stein.

GSW had their game faces on and Warriors rookie power forward Omari Spellman had the marvelous moves. Spellman was drafted 30th overall in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. The 22-year-old played college basketball at Villanova University from 2017-18.

NYK jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but D’Angelo Russell cut the deficit in half with a 3-pointer with 9:39 left in the first quarter. Kevon Looney then got past Knicks defenders and drove to the basket to finish off a Draymond Green pass to tie the game 15-15 with 4:49 left in the first. The Knicks, however, maintained a 10-point lead and led 30-20 at the end of the first.

GSW managed to turn defense into offense in the second quarter, but its efforts simply weren’t enough. The Knicks outscored the Warriors 38-30 and took a 68-50 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Green was on the move to start the second half and the Warriors added some pep to their step in the third quarter. Despite the traffic, Marquese Chriss shot a perfect dunk with 6:36 left in the third. Chriss was everywhere. Though GSW erased a 22-point deficit, they trailed 87-80 at the end of the third.

GSW and NYK battled until the very end, which led to a 112-112 tie at the end of regulation. The winner was to be decided in overtime. The Knicks outscored the Warriors 12-10 and escaped with a 124-122 win to snap a 10-game losing skid dating back to Nov. 18th when they routed the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-105 at Madison Square Garden.

With the loss, GSW fell to 5-21. The Warriors are now on a 2-game losing skid.

D’Angelo Russell led the Warriors with 32 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists. Alec Burks had 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Glenn Robinson III had 17 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Draymond Green had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. Marquese Chriss had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Willie Cauley-Stein had 7 points and 5 rebounds. Damion Lee had 6 points and 1 rebound. Eric Paschall had 5 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kevon Looney had 5 points and 1 rebound. Omari Spellman had 3 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Ky Bowman added 3 points.

The Warriors face the Utah Jazz at Vivint Smart Home Arena on Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 pm PST.

Kings down the Knicks 113-92 in the Garden

The Sacramento Kings took the opportunity to build off their first win on Friday night to put victory number two in the book by crushing the New York Knicks 113-92 on Sunday night in the Garden. Teams traveling to the East Coast from the West can sometimes suffer from fatigue and time disorientation in their first game of a road trip. That did not happen on Sunday night.

Fast start in Manhattan
The lead changed hands three times in the first quarter of the game. The third lead change came with 7:51 to go in the period. The Kings took a 10-9 lead off a Harrison Barnes finger-roll layup. Sacramento would never trail again in the game.

The Kings shot 52.2% from the floor in the first quarter and put in 5 of 12 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. When the buzzer sounded after the first 12-minutes were over, Sacramento held a 32-23 lead over the home team.

No let-up in the 2nd quarter
The Kings kept the pressure on the Knicks in the second period by continuing to shoot well and by playing tenacious defense. Sacramento made good on 11 of their 19 Field Goal Attempts (57.9%), hit 3 of 6 (50.0%) from downtown and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Kings defense held the Knicks to just 28.6% (6-for-21) shooting and limited New York to just 2 of 10 from 3-point range.

The Kings held a 61-41 lead at the half.

What would happen in the third quarter?
The Kings had not outscored an opponent in the third quarter of any of their previous six games. That had led to their demise in every contest except on Friday night versus Utah.

That all changed on Sunday night in NYC. The Kings outscored the Knicks 29-23 and broke the third quarter curse that seemed like it would never go away.

Again, it was a combination of good shooting and a strong defense that did the in the job for the Kings. One example of the defense is the fact New York went 0-for-7 from “downtown” in the period. Sacramento was up 90-64 after 36 minutes of play.

The Knicks didn’t roll over and play dead
Every player in the NBA is a proud professional. They all want to win and every one of them hates to lose. The Knicks tried to make the game competitive in the last period.

Kings head coach Luke Walton had to leave his starters in for over half the quarter because the pesky Knicks would not go away. It was a tremendous “chase-down” block that ended the New York comeback run.

The Kings won their second game of the season 113-92. Sacramento is 2-5 while New York drops to 1-6 on the young campaign.

Postgame thoughts
Kings head coach Luke Walton had a number of thoughts after the win:

  • Walton said he told his team this game would set the tone for the road trip.
  • He said the key to the victory was the reduced number of turnovers and competition for rebounds. The Kings turned the ball over just 13 times and outrebounded New York 49-39.
  • Walton was happy that his team won the 3rd quarter but emphasized the team did not talk about the problem during halftime of the last two games – both victories.
  • He also mentioned a sitdown that he and De’Aaron Fox had on the plane just to review video clips and plays. Fox scored a team-high 24 points and dished out six assists in the win. That was some productive coach-player time.
  • When asked by a New York reporter about the playoffs, Walton replied that he’s not worried about the playoffs. He said he is interested in getting better every day.

Top performances

  • All of the Kings starting five scored in double figures.
  • Richaun Holmes had another double-double game scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (four off the offensive glass).
  • Buddy Hield found the bucket again. He put 22 points in the book shooting 8-for-16 overall and hitting 5 of 11 from long range.
  • Harrison Barnes enjoyed his night in the Garden putting up 19 points.
  • Nemanja Bjelica recorded 10 points, made eight rebounds and distributed six assists in his 24-minutes on the floor.
  • The Knicks were led by Marcus Morris Sr. with a game-high 28 points and rookie RJ Barrett who added 22 points in 40-plus minutes of playing time.

Up next
The Kings head up “North” to face the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night. The Raptors will be much tougher competition, but the Kings have won in Exposition City before.

The Knicks will also return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Detroit.

#1 The Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant and the Toronto Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard are going free agency to see if they can get the maximum for their buck.

#2 Some of the teams that most likely will show interest in Durant and Leonard are the LA Clippers, Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks. It’s very likely everyone should learn either by Sunday night or Monday morning where they’ll be going.

#3 The Houston Rockets are shopping center Clint Capela, guard Eric Gordon, and forward PJ Tucker in their bid to get Philadelphia 76ers star Jimmy Butler. The Rockets are to trying to solidify themselves after failing to make the NBA Finals in the last two seasons.

#4 In the game of baseball, fans come many sit as close to the action as they can. After some serious injuries to fans last season, the MLB thought they got it covered with all the netting they possibly muster up to protect the fans. Last Sunday, a young girl was hit in the eye with a bullet hit by the Dodgers’ Cody Bellinger, and on May 29th, a two-year-old girl was hit by a foul ball hit by the Chicago Cubs’ Albert Almora Jr. that fractured her skull at Houston’s Minute Maid Park leaving her with injuries that she will have to battle with for years to come. The Dodgers, Nationals, and White Sox have said during the All-Star Break, they’ll be netting their entire stadiums from foul pole to foul pole.

#5 The San Francisco Giants’ lineup has been noted for having the worst offense in baseball and possibly the worst in their franchise history. The Giants do not have a batter hitting over .300 in their lineup and have lost nine of their last 12 games.

#1 What about all the talk from ESPN radio that they can see a LeBron James and Kyrie Irving reunion at the Los Angeles Lakers especially if Jason Kidd had come on board as head coach but Frank Vogel got the job as Lakers head coach? Stephen A Smith says that not going to happen that his sources tell him that Irving is going to the Knicks and Brooklyn is trying to weigh in on Irving, but Irving is focused on going to the Knicks and Madison Square Garden.

#2 The Toronto Raptors’ Kawhi Leonard sunk a four-bouncer on the rim and got the Raptors into the next round defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 92-90 on a buzzer beater. Leonard had himself a game finishing with 41 points in a Game 7 elimination contest to advance to face the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

#3 The Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lilliard will be all the rage as the Blazers are coming off a narrow 4-3 win past the Denver Nuggets. It took seven games for the Blazers to advance. Do the Blazers have enough to go deep with Golden State? In game one the Warriors rolled past Portland 116-94.

#4 In hockey, the San Jose Sharks and St Louis Blues played Game 2 Monday night in the best of seven in this third round of the NHL Stanley Cup Western Conference Final. The Sharks have been getting help from all around, but the Sharks’ Timo Meier has been on fire with two goals scored in Game 1. The Sharks had home ice in game for the first two games.

#5 The Oakland A’s opened up a two-game series in Seattle on Monday night the A’s got five homers but couldn’t win it in the end. The A’s and M’s are battling for that third place spot in the American League West and are two games out of second place but eight games behind Houston. The A’s and M’s have almost identical records in a short series that could prove to test the A’s on the road and the M’s against an A’s team who’s capable to break out the bats and get good pitching.
