Good, Bad And All That’s Between: Bears’ effectiveness wanes then surges in 28-21 loss to Washington

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, CA–At some point, the Cal Bears went from hanging around to hanging touchdowns.

And at some point, the Washington Huskies went from being lulled to sleep to no lull at all.

Cal’s 28-21 loss to the visiting Huskies was a strange affair. But college football games often are strange. Only winning makes them more familiar.

Cal’s biggest misgiving on a Saturday night in which their offensive showed up late, and their defense departed early? It’s okay to be fashionably late if you can fashion together a win.

“We played some good football in stretches in the game, but we lost so that sucks obviously,” said linebacker Jackson Sirmon, who led Cal with 11 tackles.

“I thought our players gave us everything they had,” coach Justin Wilcox said. “In the first half we didn’t get quite enough going on offense. In the second half, we needed one more stop… somewhere. And we didn’t get it done. They’re a good team. That’s the bottom line.”

The Huskies piled up the yardage as their offense has done all season with an average of 528 yards per game coming in. But in a 245-yard first half, Washington came away with just two field goals and a 6-0 lead. Quarterback Michael Penix saw a couple of his early passes dropped. A curious decision by Huskies’ coach Kalen DeBoer to attempt a field goal when his offense faced a 4th-and-3 at Cal’s 18-yard line preceded Peyton Henry’s second field goal.

A conservative Huskies offense? Yes, in part. Previously DeBoer had attempted fourth down conversions 19 times in seven games, making them one of the most, aggressive attacks in the nation. But with Cal sputtering on offense–just 83 yards in the first half–Washington took what it was easily afforded.

The Bears announced after the game that standout, offensive tackle Michael Cindric will miss the remainder of the season saying only that he’ll require surgery in advance of next season. His absence prompted a second, reshuffling of Cal’s offensive line in less than a month. That essentially cost Cal’s offense early as they rushed for just five yards and saw Jack Plummer take a pair of damaging sacks that killed Cal drives.

Plummer gamely came out firing in the second half, marching Cal to a 7-6 lead after he connected with J. Michael Sturdivant on a 8-yard touchdown pass. Immediately, Plummer had Jadyn Ott and Mason Starling (starting in place of the injured Jeremiah Hunter) engaged as well.

Five minutes into the second half, the Bears had the lead and momentum. The Huskies were left to answer for their porous, secondary that was thrown on repeatedly in losses to UCLA and Arizona State. And they responded behind Penix, the national leader in passing yardage.

Washington’s 11-play drive capped by Cameron Davis’ 6-yard run to the end zone, and the ensuing two-point conversion with Penix throwing to Ja’Lynn Polk restored a 14-7 lead for the visitors.

Penix would add a pair of touchdown passes early in the fourth. His 36-yard completion to Richard Newton put the Huskies in control, leading 28-14 with 10:19 remaining.

Down two touchdowns, Cal didn’t go away. They put together a 12-play drive that was crystallized by Mavin Anderson’s leaping, touchdown catch on 4th-and-7. Anderson also contributed a 34-yard catch on the drive that brought Cal within 28-21 with 6:11 remaining.

Plummer finished 21 of 34, 245 yards passing and three touchdowns. But his last gasp attempt at a game-tying score died with an incomplete pass at the Washington 42-yard line with 28 seconds left.

“There’s a lot of belief, and we keep fighting,” DeBoer said of his Huskies (6-2). “And most importantly, we just need to keep getting better. And when you really try to narrow it down, don’t get overwhelmed by the big picture. Just get better”

The Bears (3-4) face another high-scoring opponent in Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Stanford Kicker, Joshua Karty Hails as the Homecoming Hero with 5 FG’s to Edge Past Arizona State, 15-14

STANFORD, Calf.–  The Stanford Cardinal won their Homecoming game on the mighty foot of junior kicker, Joshua Karty, as his five field goals were enough to extinguish the Arizona Sun Devils, 15-14, by a proverbial toenail.

“Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense, but as an old coaching thing that I heard a long time ago that I say sometimes too, which is like, you win one game, win the second one and make it count. That can’t just be a stand-alone game.

You have to go on and win the next one to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.”  Stanford HC David Shaw on team’s consecutive wins.

Stanford initially took the lead the first five minutes of the game, on a 44-yard field goal by Joshua Karty.  Unfortunately, that didn’t last long, because Sun Devil’s graduate running back, X Valladay scampered for a 15-yard touchdown.  Karty kicked another field goal (36yd) within the last two minutes of the first quarter, 7-6 ASU.

Not satisfied with the one-point advantage after 15 minutes of action, Arizona State scored less than a minute into the second stanza, on a 39-yard bomb pass from junior quarterback, Emory Jones to sophomore wide receiver, Elijhah Badger..! 4-6 ASU.

The remaining 14 minutes of the half had both quarterbacks (Jones & Tanner McKee) exchanging interceptions, and Arizona State’s freshman kicker, Carter Brown missed a field goal with 1:00 on the clock.  The Cardinal avoided being down by double-digits at the half. 14-6 ASU.

Joshua Karty converted his third field goal (44 yards) late in the third and his fourth (36 yards) early in the fourth quarter, to bring Stanford within two points in the final quarter.  14-12 ASU
With the game still in the balance, “Mr. Homecoming ” used his right foot again to put out the Sun Devils’ fire, with a 47-yard game winning boot.

Joshua minimized the magnitude of the big annual game.

“Oh, I try to keep the external dynamics kind of out of my head, like in a game. It was nice that it was homecoming, but for me, when I woke up this morning it was another game to stay locked in as usual.”

“But just glad I could contribute to the team and get a great team win today.”  Added Karty.

Junior quarterback Tanner McKee threw for an impressive 320 yards on a whopping 57 attempts, but didn’t get into the endzone and threw an interception.  He was just happy for the win.

The crucial victory marks the Cardinal’s first Pac 12 win of the season, and third overall.  Stanford (3-4) heads down to the “City of Angels” next, to take on the #9 UCLA Bruins (6-1), Saturday, October 29.

Coach Shaw is ready for the challenge:

“Looking forward for this team to come back and see who’s healthy this week from today, and then put together a good plan, have our guys get ready to go down to Southern California and fight, and looking forward to this week.”

The Stanford Cardinal win their Homecoming contest by a single point (15-14): however, former player, Bryce Love was inspirational in the victory with his presence on the Farm, according to Coach Shaw.  Cardinal Alum, Christian McCaffery being traded to the San Francisco 49ers also gives him comfort and pleasure, with him now now being nearby the campus and football program.

Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca: Cal prepares to face winless Buffaloes in Colorado on Saturday

Washington State Cougars quarterback Cameron Ward (1) is caught by Cal Bears defensive end Ethan Saunders (99) at Pullman on Sat Oct 1, 2022. The Bears hope to get back in the win column this Sat Oct 15, 2022 when they face the Colorado Buffaloes (AP News photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael Duca:

#1 Michael coming off the bye from last week how important is it for Cal Bears to have had that rest after getting defeated by Washington State Cougars and having lost two of their last three games?

#2 The WSU’s quarterback Cameron Ward seemed like he had all day on Sat Oct 1st at Pullman throwing for three touchdowns in the 28-9 victory over Cal.

#3 The Bears did have their flashes on the defensive side of the football when Ward intercepted twice.

#4 The Bears just simply were hurting on the offensive side of the ball scoring only nine points and quarterback Jack Plummer could not convert any touchdowns throwing 23-33 for 272 yards.

#5 The Bears should be well rested and are facing an winless Colorado Buffaloes (0-5) team who has made coaching changes and were just landslided in their last game Saturday by the Arizona Wildcats 43-20. Will Cal be able to make work of the Buffs this Saturday?

Heart-Breaking Stanford Loss to Oregon State In Final 13 Seconds – 28-27

Heart-Breaking Stanford Loss to Oregon State In Final 13 Seconds – 28-27

By Barbara Mason

The Stanford Cardinal ((1-4) have been struggling losing last week to the Oregon Ducks in a route 45-27. Tonight the Cardinal took on the Oregon State Beavers (4-2). Two teams with their backs against the wall made for some fiery emotional moments in this game.

Oregon State had a nice drive to start the game but came up empty when Atticus Sappington missed a 40-yd field goal failing to take an early lead.

Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee completed seven passes in their first drive in the quarter, one for 31 yards to Benjamin Yurosek. The Cardinal drove down to the Oregon State one -yard-line and Casey Filkins rushed for one yard and the touchdown giving Stanford a 7-0 lead.

Oregon State put together a time consuming drive taking their possession into the second quarter. The Beavers Jack Colletto rushed for one yard and the touchdown. The extra point was good and this game was tied 7-7.

Stanford was looking for a fast start in this game and it all came together in the second quarter. The Cardinal extended their lead to 10-7 when Joshua Party kicked a 47 yard field at 8:44. With the clock winding down in the half, Tanner McKee found Bryson Tremayne for 21 yards and the touchdown. Stanford took a 17-7 lead into the locker room at half-time. The Cardinal were well on their way to breaking their nine game losing streak against conference opponents.

Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee had a sensational first half completing 14 of 19 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown.

Stanford went three and out to start the third quarter. The Beavers’ first possession of the quarter stalled on the Stanford 27 yard line and they had to settle for a 40-yard field goal. The Beavers now trailed by a touchdown 17-10.

After a slow offensive start in the quarter for the Cardinal, the Stanford defense really stepped up sacking Beaver quarterback Ben Gulbranson for a third time in the game. Stanford took over on downs setting up a 37 yard pass from McKee to Brycen Tremaine for a touchdown extending the Cardinal lead to 24-10.

Stanford would take that lead into the fourth quarter. Oregon State’s Silas Bolden would make the catch of the game, a 21 yard pass from Gulbranson in the end zone to start the quarter. The Beavers two point conversion attempt would fail and at 14:50 the Cardinal had a 24-16 lead.

Oregon State refused to back down and with 5:45 left in the game Damien Martinez romped for 43 yards to the end zone followed by a two-points conversion. The Cardinal were clinging to a 24-22 lead.

Stanford extended their lead in the final minute kicking a 46 yard field goal. When a Cardinal win seemed inevitable Oregon State’s quarterback Gulbranson threw a miracle pass to Tre’Shaun Harrison who scampered for the touchdown and a 28-27 Beaver lead. The Cardinal suffered a heart- breaking loss in a most unlikely comeback by Oregon State.

Stanford had some great numbers despite the loss. McKee finished with 269 yards and two touchdowns. The Beavers just turned out the lights at Stanford Stadium in a crazy finish. It was absolute madness in the final minute of this game.

The Cardinal will face a tough Notre Dame Fighting Irish team next Saturday at Notre Dame with kickoff at 4:30 PM. That game will be televised on NBC.

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael, You knew the way the Stanford Cardinal (1-3) were playing it was going to be a rough go for Stanford when they went into the confines at Autzen Stadium in Eugene when the Cardinal got landslided 45-27 by the Oregon Ducks (4-1).

#2 For Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee it was not the afternoon that it was cracked up to be throwing 166 yards, 19-33, and two touchdowns it wasn’t enough to keep up with the Ducks.

#3 Michael, rough first half for the Cardinal defense as the Ducks opened up the first quarter with ten points and closing out the half in the second quarter with 21 points.

#4 Ducks quarterback Bo Nix went 16-29 for 161 yards for two touchdowns. Nix was able to run the ball and that was one of the factors that kept the Cardinal defense off last Saturday.

#5 The Cardinal host the Oregon State Beavers (3-2) this Sat Oct 8th. The Beavers have lost two straight games after winning three in a row. The Beavers dropped their last game last Saturday getting trounced by the Utah Utes 42-16. How do you see the Beavers and Cardinal match up this Saturday at Stanford Stadium?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Bears prepare for Colorado; Cal in second road game in a row

Cal Bears head coach Justin Wilcox had worry on his mind all game long against the Washington State Cougars at Pullman on Sat Oct 1, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Cal Bears podcast:

#1 Morris, like you questioned in your column on Saturday can the Cal Bears (3-2) win a game on the road?

#2 Cal is in last with a 3-2 record how concerned is head coach Justin Wilcox?

#3 To quote Wilcox after the game “We got nothing going in the run game,” coach Justin Wilcox admitted. “Pass protection wasn’t where it needed to be.

#4 Cal quarterback Jack Plummer went 23-33 for 273 yards against the Washington State Cougars (4-1) but did not throw one touchdown and one interception. Coach Wilcox mentioned lack of pass protection was that more the case or Plummer just couldn’t get settled in to find targets?

#5 The Bears have a bye this Sat 7th and return to action on Sat Oct 15th to continue their road trip and face the Colorado Buffaloes (0-5) in Colorado. The Buffaloes were trampled on by the Arizona Wildcats last Saturday 43-20. Is Colorado Cal’s best chance to pick up their first win of the season?

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael Roberson: Loss of EJ how much will it cost; Can McKee get protection from his line this Saturday at Oregon?

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee was running for daylight all day long against the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium in Seattle Sat Sep 24, 2022. He was sacked eight times by the Washington defense. (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Michael:

#1 Michael it wasn’t even close last Saturday at the Washington Huskies made work of the Stanford Cardinal (1-2) 40-22 at Husky Stadium in Washington.

#2 Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr 22-37 for 309 yards. Penix didn’t throw for a touchdown but yet there was a lot of offense by the Huskies.

#3 Huskies running back Wayne Taulapapa rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown and Will Nixon with only 4 carries and 21 yards scored one touchdown.

#4 Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee didn’t get much protection getting sacked eight times and the Huskies forced two fumbles was it a matter of McKee just couldn’t get away from the Huskies’ blitz package or the Cardinal offensive line just couldn’t stop the Huskies pass rush?

#5 What are some of things McKee will be looking at as the Cardinal prepare for the Oregon Ducks (3-1) in Eugene this Saturday an 8:00pm PDT.
