Stanford Holds On To Defeat South Carolina 66-65

Stanford Cardinal women celebrate winning the Final Four against the South Carolina Gamecocks in San Antonio to advance to the Women’s Championship on Sunday Apr 4, 2021 (AP News photo)

Friday afternoon the Stanford Cardinal Ladies took on the South Carolina Gamecocks in the Final Four. One team had a far easier time advancing while the other had to make quite a comeback. South Carolina was able to get past sixth-seeded Texas who went cold as ice at the worst possible time.

On the other end of the spectrum Louisville had a great shot at beating Stanford but the Cardinal Ladies had a different scenario in mind. Struggling the start the game, Stanford mounted a comeback that Louisville was unable to squelch. Stanford had an amazing second half in that game that cemented the trip to the Final Four. The final score was 78-63.

Now it was on to the Final Four for Stanford in search of a berth in the National Finals against a very tough South Carolina team that is well-balance offensively and defensively. After the first quarter Stanford again had a bit of a slow start when South Carolina went on a 11-2 run. The Cardinal turned that slow start around real quick and by the end of the quarter Stanford and South Carolina were locked at 15. This game would be a fight to the end with two extraordinary offenses and defenses.

South Carolina has some very tough shot blocking which did give Stanford some problems although with two minutes left in the half Stanford led by a slim margin 26-25. As the half came to an end Stanford had extended their lead 31-25. The slow start by Stanford to start the game was long forgotten. Haley Jones had the high score in the half with nine points followed by Lexie Hull with eight, and Ashton Prechtel had seven points off the bench.

South Carolina’s Zia Cooke had double digits with twelve points. She shot two three-pointers in the half and she was proving to be a handful for the Stanford defense. Through the first half the Cardinal defense were holding their own against Cooke, proving that they were up for the task.

Stanford’s Haley Jones picked up where she left off in the second half as the Cardinal ladies continued to lead in the third quarter. South Carolina was having none of it as Cooke continued her rampage. With three minutes left in the third quarter the score was tied at 43. As the third quarter came to an end, Stanford led 52-49. Stanford’s Haley Jones had shot twenty points while South Carolina’s Zia Cooke led her team with twenty-three points.

It was a wild fourth quarter with a heart-breaking conclusion for South Carolina. With 6 seconds left on the clock Carolina had a clear shot that simply failed giving Stanford the win 66-65. It could not have been a closer or well-played game by either teams. Haley Jones would finish with 24 points followed by Hull with 18 points. Lexie Hull had an amazing 13 rebounds. South Dakota’s Zia Cooke scored 25 points in the loss.

Sunday the Stanford Cardinal will play for the National title. They have achieved their goal for a berth in the finals and now await their opponent. They will either play Arizona or UConn. The time for this game is still to be determined.

Stanford Cardinal Advance in NCAA Women’s Basketball

By Barbara Mason

Tuesday night the No.1 seeded Stanford Cardinal took on No.8 Oklahoma State in the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament. Stanford advanced to the second round via a dominating win over 16-seed Utah Valley 87-44.

Oklahoma State earned a spot in the second round beating No. 9 seed Wake Forest 84-61 giving them a shot at upsetting the number one seed and playing in the sweet sixteen. Only losing two regular season games the Cardinal would be tough to get by, even to a determined Oklahoma State, which they managed to do with a 73-62 win to advance to the next round on Tuesday night.

Oklahoma State did not get off to the best start but they more than made up for it trailing by a single point as the first quarter came to an end 17-16. Making up a 8-0 deficit in the early goings they came on strong in the waning minutes of the quarter.

Stanford extinguished the fire that Oklahoma State had finished the first quarter with leading at the half 42-27. The Cardinal had come unleashed in the second quarter denying any chance for the Cowgirls to get back in this game. After two quarters the Cardinal Anna Wilson led the scoring with 11 points and Kiana Williams had nine points to finish the half.

Stanford took up right where they left off in the first half taking a hefty lead in the third quarter. They were on fire from deep, hitting 11 of 15 mid-way through the quarter. As the quarter came to an end the Cowgirls pulled off a 10-0 run getting to within ten points after trailing by 20.

Going into the fourth quarter Stanford led by the score of 50-61. When it looked as if Stanford had taken complete control of the game Oklahoma State showed that they were capable of giving Stanford a lot of trouble.

Stanford had a bit of a letdown in the early minutes of the fourth quarter but always managed to come up with timely buckets to keep a significant lead and keeping Oklahoma State under control. The Cowgirls continued to fight trailing by 11 points as half of the final quarter had expired. Five minutes stood between the Cardinal and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.

The number one overall seed; the Stanford Cardinal would advance for the 13th consecutive time. Stanfords’ Jones would finish the game with 17 points, Williams with 13, Wilson with 12 and Brink shooting 11.

Oklahoma State fought hard in this game, their high score coming from Notoa with 14 followed by Mack with 13.

Stanford will now take on the winner of Missouri State or Wright State in the Sweet Sixteen.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Stanford women No.1 ranked; Stanford men da Silva back but it just wasn’t enough as Cardinal fall way short

Stanford women’s head coach Tara VanDerveer holds the netting after the Cardinal beat UCLA on Sun Mar 8, 2021 as the Cardinal continue in the Pac 12 Tournament (photo from @GoStanfordWBB)

On the Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 We’ll start off talking about women’s basketball Jerry, the Stanford women (25-2) got a big win over UCLA (16-5) on Sunday 75-55 a game that showed you what this team can do and why their ranked No. 1.

#2 Michaela Onyenwere last Sunday scored 30 points and has been a key part of the offense for the Stanford women.

#3 Turning to men’s basketball last night at the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas. The Cal Bears played wire to wire against the Stanford Cardinal. The Cardinal just couldn’t generate the kind of offense they’ve had in past games this season and it wasn’t even close in the loss 76-58.

#4 Oscar da Silva returned from the injured list and scored 12 points and Jaiden Delaire finished first in scoring with 14 but it was too little for Stanford to beat Cal.

#5 What’s has to be in store for Stanford head coach Jerod Haase he had a team that was good enough to compete, the da Silva injury hampered the team and now he’s going to have to look forward to getting some recruiting done in the off season.

Stanford’s chances of extending its men’s basketball season took a serious blow on Wednesday, when the Cardinal fell to Bay Area rival California 76-58 in the opening round of the Pac-12 Conference postseason tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.

Cal (9-19 overall) led 35-29 at halftime while defeating the Cardinal in the opening round for the second year in a row. The Golden Bears held Stanford scoreless in the opening 4 minutes and 27 seconds, but the Cardinal got as close as 52-51 before a Ryan Betley 3-pointer at 5:56 of the second half sparked a 24-7 run to end the contest.

Stanford (!4-13), which suffered its fifth straight defeat, won the two regular season meetings between the schools in early February.

Matt Bradley led the Golden Bears with 19 points on 7 of 11 field goals, including 3 of 4 on 3-pointers. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists.

Betley was next for Cal with 13 points, and Andre Kelly added 12 points along with a team-leading nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Jaiden Delaire led the Cardinal with 14 points. Oscar da Silva returned to the Stanford lineup and scored 12 points. Michael O’Connell also scored 12 points and had three assists. Lukas Kisunas grabbed seven rebounds, and da Silva and Spencer Jones each had five boards.

The Golden Bears led from start to finish and held Stanford to 37.7 percent field goal shooting (20 of 53) and 7 second-chance points. Cal shot 53.8 percent from the field (28 of 52), including 9 of 17 behind the arc, and held a 52-12 edge in scoring off the bench.

Prior to the game, da Silva was named as the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year – the fifth player in Stanford history to receive the award.

Cal advances to the quarterfinals to face Colorado on Thursday. Stanford could possibly receive a berth in the National Invitation Tournament, which begins March 17 in Frisco and Denton, Texas.

San Jose State’s difficult season comes to an end with 111-80 blowout loss to Wyoming in Mountain West Tournament

By Ana Kieu

After suspending its regular season due to COVID-19, the #9 San Jose State Spartans took on the #8 Wyoming Cowboys in the first round of the Mountain West Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Unfortunately, SJSU suffered a triple-digit loss, 111-80.

But the Spartans’ journey wasn’t without its fair share of trials and tribulations. From tough losses to delayed flights, SJSU was burdened by a laundry list of issues. SJSU, however, rose up from those challenges.

“Our team has transformed and evolved over the course of this season,” head coach Jean Prioleau told media members. “Toughness comes in many forms and this group has shown toughness on many different levels.”

The Spartans’ starting five featured Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Sebastian Mendoza, Richard Washington, and Ralph Agee. Agee made a jumper to get the Spartans on the board first 2-0 just 30 seconds into the first half. Just eight seconds later, Ike Graham responded with a layup to tie the game at 2.

The Spartans and Cowboys exchanged leads and ties for several minutes in the first half. But it was the Cowboys who took the lead and never looked back. Marcus Williams made a layup in the paint to make it a 10-point game, 21-11, at 14:21. Graham Ike helped Wyoming open a 16-point lead with 2:51 left.

Wyoming closed out the first half scoring with a pair of free throws from Kenny Foster with 28 seconds left. SJSU trailed 59-45 at halftime. Omari Moore led the Spartans with 13 points and five assists at the half.

The Spartans had their work cut out for them. SJSU opened the second half scoring as Ralph Agee capitalized on a Cowboys turnover, made a second-chance layup, and brought the Spartans within 12 points, 59-47, just 34 seconds into the second half.

After a glimpse of hope, the Spartans’ problems reappeared. Ralph Agee appeared to have put a foot to Graham Ike’s groin. The officials handed Agee a Flagrant 2 foul. Subsequently, Agee was ejected from the game. Nate Lacewell entered the game for Agee.

Marcus Williams made a jumper to help the Cowboys take a 20-point lead, 79-59, at 11:27. While the Spartans tried to inch closer, their efforts were ineffective as the Cowboys used a 11-3 run to take a 90-64 lead with 7:36 left.

The Cowboys reached the 100-point mark when Marcus Williams made a layup with 4:15 left. Wyoming proceeded to pour in the points with back-to-back three-pointers by Drake Jeffries and Hunter Thompson, respectively.

The Spartans went on a late 5-0 run, but continued to trail 109-80. The Cowboys had the last laugh as Drake Jeffries capitalized on a Spartans turnover and made a two-point dunk to make it a 111-80 game with three seconds left. The Spartans lost 111-80.

SJSU finished with a 5-16, 3-14 MW record, while Wyoming called it a wrap with a 14-10, 8-9 MW record. Wyoming moved on to the quarterfinals.

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:

#1 Morris, one consolation about the Cal Bears season (8-19) the Pac 12 Tournament will be their last hurrah for the 2020-21 season.

#2 Let’s talk about some of the players who shined and had some good games during the season for Cal we’ll start with the very popular Matt Bradley who finished the season with 18.4 points per game average

#3 The Bears Andre Kelly finished in second in average season scoring with 10.4 not the biggest overall season number but Kelly did help out with some games this season.

#4 For head coach Mark Fox looking past the Pac 12 Tournament he should have a busy off season recruiting.

#5  The Bears are in Vegas on Mar 10th and will face Stanford do you see any outside chance the Bears could make this an interesting game although their long shots for advancing in the Tournament.

Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Trojans deliver offensive pain on Cardinal last regular season game

The USC Trojans forward Max Agbonkpolo (23) gets a hand on the ball and prevents the Stanford Cardinal guard Noah Tatiz (20) from taking a shot in the first half of Wed Mar 3, 2021’s game in Los Angeles. (AP News photo)

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Jerry F:

#1 It’s almost incredible to think about how the USC Trojans (20-6) just were no match for the Stanford Cardinal (14-12) in a landslide win 79-42.

#2 The Cardinal scored only 17 points to the Trojans 36 just in the first half, the Cardinal just couldn’t get any offense going and faired no better in the second half 43-25.

#3 Stanford was missing Oscar da Silva in the line up and had Brandon Angel and Spencer Jones tied for the Cardinal top scorers with nine.

#4 Lots of points scored against the Cardinal 79 and head coach Jerod Haase was under pressure to figure it out but couldn’t.

#5 The game at USC brought the Cardinal to their final regular season game and now they head to the Pac 12 Tournament in Vegas on March 10th one last hurrah to try and get a few wins to close the season.

Southern California jumped to a huge first-half lead and never looked back on Wednesday, as the Trojans hammered Stanford 79-42 in Pac-12 men’s basketball at Galen Center in Los Angeles.

The Cardinal ended its regular season with four straight losses and possibly played their way out of an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. Oscar da Silva, Stanford’s top scorer, missed his third straight game with a lower extremity injury.

Tahj Eaddy and Drew Peterson led USC with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Evan Mobley was next with 10 points. Peterson had nine rebounds, six assists and two steals, Isaiah White had three steals, and Evan and Isaiah Mobley each had eight rebounds.

Eaddy shot 6 of 8 from the field. The Trojans (20-6 overall, 14-5 Pac-12) outrebounded Stanford 44-27.

No Cardinal player reached double-figures in scoring, as Spencer Jones and Brandon Angel each scored nine points to lead Stanford (14-12 overall, 10-10 Pac-12). Jaiden Delaire had seven rebounds and two steals.

USC opened the game with a 17-2 run that included 15 straight points. Meanwhile, the Cardinal went 9 minutes and 20 seconds without a field goal.

Things didn’t go much better for Stanford in the second half, as USC went on a 14-0 run out of the break, extending its lead to 50-19.

Earlier, the Cardinal lost to USC 72-66 on Feb. 3.

The Cardinal’s next action is the opening round of the Pac-12 postseason tournament in Las Vegas on March 10. Pairings have yet to be announced.
