Ray shines as Giants beat A’s 3-1 in I-80 series

SAN FRANCISCO — After getting swept by the Miami Marlins over the weekend, the San Francisco Giants got right back on track, beating the Athletics 3-1 at Oracle Park on Tuesday night.

The Giants got a strong pitching performance from lefty starter Robbie Ray. Ray, who figures to be traded at the deadline for prospects, threw eight solid innings. He gave up one unearned run, two hits, while striking out six. On the negative side, if any, he walked four batters.

The Giants opened the scoring in the second inning. Right fielder Jung Hoo Lee hit a long home run to right-center field, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. The Giants scored again later in the inning after shortstop Willy Adames doubled and then third baseman Matt Chapman singled him in with a screamer off the left-field wall. Chapman was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, but the Giants were ahead 2-0.

The A’s got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when right fielder Colby Thomas reached on an error by the right fielder Lee, who dropped a routine fly ball. With Thomas at second base, the next batter third baseman Max Muncy singled him in, cutting the Giants’ lead in half to 2-1. The inning could’ve been worse, but Ray picked off Muncy trying to steal second base. The next batters Zack Gelof and Nick Kurtz popped out and grounded out respectively.

The Giants tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, designated hitter Bryce Eldridge walked. The next batter Casey Schmitt singled Eldridge to second. Then, with runners at first and second base with one out, Rafael Devers, who was the center of controversy on Sunday in Miami after he seemingly refused to want to be pinch ran for in the ninth inning, singled in Eldridge to give the Giants a 3-1 lead.

After Giants manager Tony Vitello named him closer last week, right-handed relief pitcher Caleb Kilian came in to try to shut the door in the ninth–and he did after getting into trouble. The first batter Kilian faced, catcher Shane Langeliers, flew out to left field. The next batter, left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, singled. Jacob Wilson then reached on a fielder’s choice on a comebacker to Kilian, with the out recorded at second base. The next batter, pinch hitter Lawrence Butler walked, but Kilian struck out center fielder Henry Bolte on a nasty breaking ball to earn the save. The Giants improved to 32-46, while the A’s fell to 38-40.

Although the Giants won, the win was bittersweet in a way. Second baseman Luis Arraez exited the game in the fifth inning after he fouled the ball off his right foot in the first inning. The Giants have not yet announced the extent of his injury.

In the sixth inning, Lee appeared to injure himself while trying to steal second base after he was clipped on the arm in a collision with second baseman Jeff McNeil. Lee was shaken up but later stayed in the game.

Up next, the Giants and A’s will play Game 2 of the series at Oracle Park on Wednesday night. Tyler Mahle (1-7, 6.04 ERA) will come off the injured list for the Giants to face Gage Jump (3-1, 2.37 ERA). Game time is at 6:45 p.m.

Aces Offense Never Gets On Track Losing to Liberty 87-75

New York forward Breanna Steward (30) goes in for a layup against Las Vegas Aces forward Kierstan Bell (1) and guard Jackie Young (right) the first half at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas on Tue Jun 23, 2026 (AP News photo)

By Rich Perez

This was not the offense we are used to seeing from the Las Vegas Aces. They got beaten pretty badly at the hands of the rival New York Liberty losing 87-75. The Liberty controlled the pace the entire game. Their defense as well was outstanding. Las Vegas was just off and never really got going the entire game although they did come around in the fourth quarter but it was far to late at that point.

Game recap: After the first ten minutes of play, the Liberty had taken a slim 19-17 lead. The largest lead in the game for the Liberty was seven points. Las Vegas had struggled to make shots early while the Liberty got into its offense early.

The Liberty had forced the Aces into difficult late-clock shots instead of the clean looks they usually get for A’Ja Wilson and Jackie Young. New York had capitalized on Aces mistakes pushing the pace and scoring before the Las Vegas defense could set up. The Liberty had controlled the pace in the first quarter and the Aces needed to turn that around in the second quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, the Liberty continued to control the tempo of the game. With four minutes left in the half, New York had taken a ten-point lead 33-23. The Aces would have a lot of work to do in the second half. New York outscored the Aces in the second quarter 23-16 and took a 42-33 lead into the third quarter.

This had not been a great half for Las Vegas. New York shot the ball more efficiently and they did it early. They got quality looks which allowed them to build an early lead. Las Vegas had a few careless turnovers which the Liberty took advantage of and prevented the Aces from getting into any kind of rhythm.

The Liberty had really disrupted the Aces offense. 33 halftime points is far below what fans typically see from Las Vegas. The Aces were just not shooting well, pure and simple. The Liberty were playing a scrappier game getting more offensive rebounds, loose balls and transition baskets.

While a nine-point deficit is not insurmountable for Las Vegas they do have a lot of work to do in the second half. A’Ja Wilson needed to get more touches in the paint and they needed to limit the turnovers.

Chelsea Gray had to heat up. Jackie Young was the only player on the floor in double digits and A’Ja Wilson finished the half with only six points. A little more consistency from beyond the arc would not have hurt either.

Both teams started slow in the third quarter. Las Vegas was getting stops but was unable to capitalize. The Aces went on a six-point run cutting the Liberty lead to 47-43 four minutes into the quarter.

With under three minutes left in the third the Liberty went on a run taking a 60-46 lead making things awfully difficult on Las Vegas. As the third quarter came to an end the Aces were in deep trouble trailing 67-51. The Liberty were controlling the boards and the Aces couldn’t string stops together. The way that New York was playing Las Vegas had a huge task in front of them in the fourth quarter.

The odds certainly favored the Liberty going into the fourth quarter unless the Aces could put together a huge run. They needed to cut the Liberty lead to single digits early. Las Vegas did have a much improved fourth quarter outscoring the Liberty 25-20 but it was just not enough to come away with a win.

One of the biggest reasons for the Las Vegas loss was their offense that went cold after the first quarter. New York’s defense was outstanding making every shot for the Aces difficult and limiting clean looks which forced them into a very frustrating offensive night.

Going into the third quarter the Aces needed a big run but instead the Liberty increased their lead and put the Aces in a very deep hole going into the fourth quarter. Las Vegas had a very good final quarter but the third quarter was the determining factor in this game.

The Liberty’s Breanna Steward had the game high with 20 points. The Aces Jackie Young had the high for her team hitting 19 points. The only double double of the game went to New York’s Sabrina Ionescu, 16 points with 10 rebounds.

Game notes: Tuesday evening the Aces were back in action taking on the Liberty it just turned out the way the Aces suffering fifth loss of the season. Sunday afternoon the Aces punished the Golden State Valkyries winning the game 92-73 leading at one time in the game by 28 points. Currently the Aces are in second place in the standings, the Liberty in fourth.

The Aces remain at home again playing at Michelob ULTRA Arena in front of a packed crowd. The Aces have seen so many competitive games between these two teams over the years, one of the biggest rivalries in the WNBA.

They have faced each other 62 times over the years with the Aces winning 34 times and the Liberty 28. These two teams feature many of the league’s biggest stars including A’Ja Wilson, Breanna Steward, Sabrina Ionescu and Jackie Young. Nearly every matchup between these two teams feels like a playoff game.

Thursday night the Aces will give it another go. They will take on the Dallas Wings who are hot on their heels in the standings. This will be another home game before they head out on the road. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

San Francisco Giants report: Giants schedule doubleheader against Diamondbacks at Oracle Park on Sat Aug. 29 with a day off Sun Aug 30

By Stephen Ruderman

SAN FRANCISCO–To accommodate the Giants’ makeup game against the Atlanta Braves in Cobb County on Aug. 31, the Giants have moved their series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park from Aug. 30 to a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 29.

As collectively bargained between Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players’ Association, teams may not be scheduled to play more than 21-straight days, and may not be scheduled to play in the Eastern Time Zone a day after playing in the Pacific Time Zone. With the Giants’ makeup game scheduled against the Braves in Cobb County on Aug. 31, that violated both rules, as the Giants would have been forced to play for 23-straight days.

The first game of the doubleheader against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 29, which was originally scheduled as the series finale on Aug. 30, will begin at 1:05 p.m. Tickets for the originally-scheduled series finale will be valid for the first game. Jung Hoo Lee bobbleheads, which were set to be handed out to the first 15,000 fans on Aug. 30, will instead be handed out to the first 15,000 fans for the first game of the doubleheader on Aug. 29.

The second game will remain in its originally-scheduled 7:05 slot, as will the ceremony to honor Jeff Kent, who will be a month removed from his induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 26.

All fans will be asked to leave Oracle Park following the first game. Fans with tickets to both games will be permitted to re-enter the park when the gates open for the second game.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: MLB Commissioner Criticizes Giants Pride Night Protocols

San Francisco Giants starter Landen Roupp and MLB players received a warning about altering or writing on their caps and breaking uniform code. MLB Commissioner Criticizes Giants Pride Night Protocols

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Amaury Pi-González

Commissioner Manfred will not discipline the Giants pitchers who wrote the Bible verse on hats that already had a monogram celebrating Pride Night at Oracle Park. However, Manfred did criticize the Giants’ protocols for this promotion.

Criticized the San Francisco Giants’ communication with their players during their annual Pride Night, noting that the team “botched guidance” regarding opt-out options. This left some players unclear on whether they could decline to wear the team’s Pride-themed caps.

This is what happens when you are not having a good season, even the Commissioner is not that friendly to you.

So, this game is over.

Memorable Baseball Promotion?  The Detroit Tigers, back when Mike Neek wanted to set a permanent attendance record, he purposefully gave away nothing by locking the gates and holding a massive party in the parking lot. It’s the ultimate anti-promotion, achieving an officially recorded attendance of exactly zero.
