Having won two out of three from the Colorado Rockies, the Oakland A’s came to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers. Lefty Ken Waldichuk was on the hill for Oakland. Lance Lynn would make his first start as a Dodger. Lynn did well, going seven innings and allowing three runs and five hits. The A’s just came up four runs short and were defeated by the Dodgers at Dodgers Stadium 7-3.

Three of the hits allowed were solo homers. Waldichuk did well for three innings. He struggled in the fourth and ended up being the losing pitcher. The game summary follows below.

Things went south for Waldichuk in the bottom of the fourth. Waldichuk kept the Dodgers hitless for the first three innings. Dodger first baseman Freddie Freeman led off the fourth with a single. Waldichuk struck out Will Smith and Amed Rosario.

Suddenly, Waldichuk could not find the strike zone. He walked Max Muncy and Chris Taylor to load the bases. Waldichuk hit James Outman with a pitch to force in the Dodgers first run. A’s manager Mark Kotsay replaced Waldichuk with righty Tayler Scott. Kike Hernandez, recently acquired from Boston, doubled to clear the bases. The Dodgers lead 4-0 after four.

The A’s put a run on the board in the top of the sixth. With one out and no one on board, Zack Gelof blasted his fourth home run of the year into the left-field seats. For Lance Lynn, it was the 29th home run allowed, the most in baseball. The A’s trail 4-1 midway through the sixth.

The A’s hit two solo homers in the top of the seventh. Brent Rooker led off the inning with his 18th dinger of the season. Lynn retired Tyler Soderstrom for the first out. Jordan Diaz, playing third base for the A’s, hit an opposite-field home run to make it a 4-3 game.

It was an opposite-field dinger for the young man. Lynn has now allowed 31 gopher balls season. The Dodgers got two runs back in their half of the seventh. Mookie Betts blasted his 28th big fly of the year leading off the frame.

Freddie Freeman singled. Tarnol stuck out Will Smith for the first out. Amed Rosario walked to put men on at first and second. Lefty Sam Long was brought in to pitch. Long uncorked a wild pitch, Greeman and Rosario advanced a base. The A’s intentionally walked to Taylor to load the bases. Long walked James Outman to force in a run. The Dodgers lead 6-3 after seven.

The Dodgers tacked on a run in the eighth. With one out, Mookie Betts doubled. Freddie Freeman’s fourth hit of the night, a single to center, drove in Betts with the Dodgers’ seventh run. LA leads 7-3 after eight.

The A’s failed to score in the ninth.

Game Notes: With the loss, the A’s are now 30-78. The Dodgers improved to 60-45. The Dodgers lead the San Francisco Giants by 2 1/2 games in the race for the NL West crown.

The Line score for Oakland was three runs, six hits, and no errors. Three of the hits were home runs.

The line score for LA was seven runs, seven hits, and no errors. The hitting stars for LA were Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Kike Hernandez. Betts had a double and a home run. Freeman had three singles and a double. Hernandez’ double drove in three runs in the fourth.

Lefty Hogan Harris will start for Oakland on Wednesday night. Tony Gonsolin will pitch for the Dodgers. The game will start at 7:10 pm.

The Oakland A’s won two out of the three games against the Colorado Rockies this weekend. The A’s offense came to life on Friday and Saturday, putting 19 runs on the board and winning 8-5 and 11-3. The A’s offense went back to sleep on Sunday as they lost 2-0. The A’s record is now a woeful 30-77. Additionally, the A’s have the worst run differential (-255) in baseball. The A’s have scored 387 runs and have allowed a whopping 642.

The A’s finish the road trip in Los Angeles as they face the NL West Division leader, the Dodgers, for three games. The Dodgers are 59-45 and have a two-game lead over the San Francisco Giants in the race for first place in the division. The Giants would love to have the A’s commit mayhem by beating the Dodgers.

The Dodgers, favorites to win the pennant in the National League this year, have been hit hard by the injury jinx. The Dodgers’ two best-starting pitchers are not available for the series. Clayton Kershaw, a future Hall of Fame player, is out with a shoulder injury until at least August 10th. Walker Buehler has yet to throw a pitch this season.

Buehler had Tommy John surgery and hoped to return to action around September 1st. Reliever Blake Treinen, a former Oakland Athletic, had rotator cuff surgery and has been unable to perform this season. Treinen is expected back on August 15th. The Dodgers traded with the Chicago White Sox the other day to bolster their pitching.

The Dodgers acquired a starter, Lance Lynn, and a reliever Joe Kelly. Lynn is having a down year. His record is 6-9, and his ERA is a bloated 6.47. Kelly was with the Dodgers in 2018 when they played the Boston Red Sox in the World Series that year. Kelly left the Dodgers to play for Boston and Chicago.

The Dodgers lost shortstop Gavin Lux for the season with a leg injury. The Dodgers lost their star shortstop, Trea Turner, to free agency. Turner is now with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Dodger third baseman Justin Turner left to play with the Red Sox.

The Dodgers made up for the loss of Justin Turner by signing J.D. Martinez as their DH. Martinez had a down year with Boston and is proving Boston wrong for letting him go. Martinez is hitting. 260 with 25 home runs and 75 RBIs.

The Dodgers’ offense is quite potent. Former NL MVP Freddie Freeman and former AL MVP Mookie Betts lead the offense. Other offensive threats are third baseman Max Muncy and catcher Will Smith. Freeman is hitting .329 with 21 homers and 73 RBIs. Betts’ numbers are .227, 27 dingers, and 68 RBIs. Muncy has hit 27 home runs and driven in 70.

The shortstop position has been a problem for the Dodgers this year. The Dodgers have been using Miguel Rojas but acquired Amed Rosario to help improve the play at that position. The Dodgers traded with Boston to bring back the super-utility man, Kike Hernandez. Hernandez can play shortstop, second base, or centerfield.

His ability to play multiple positions gives Dodger manager Dave Roberts the ability to use Mookie Betts in the outfield. David Peralta, James Outman, and Jason Heyward are other players contributing to the Dodger offense. All three players can hit the ball out of the park. The A’s pitching staff will have their hands full trying to contain the potent Dodger offense.

The Dodgers have announced their starters for the series. On Tuesday, Lance Lynn will be making his first start as a Dodger. Lynn has not pitched well this year. He is hoping that Dodger Stadium will be a good place to get a win for his new team.

On Wednesday, Tony Gonsolin will be on the hill for LA. Gonsolin is 5-4 and has an ERA of 4.25. On Thursday, left Julio Urias will start. Urias is 7-6 with an ERA of 4.98. The A’s have yet to announce their starters. Lefties Ken Waldichuk and Hogan Harris may see action.

The A’s would love to get a win or two in the series. The Dodgers are salivating to play the A’s as they hope to get three wins and increase their lead over the Giants. If the Dodgers pitchers are at the top of their game, they could sweep the A’s.

Taking the A’s lightly would be a mistake. The A’s may not have the name players like the Dodgers, but guys like JJ Bleday, Ryan Noda, Zack Gelof, and Brent Rooker can send the ball out of the park, and the A’s can make life a wee bit more miserable for the Dodgers. A’s manager Mark Kotsay will have his team ready. The A’s players will give Kotsay a 100% effort. They may not win, but they will give the Dodgers a total effort.

Giants Sweep Dodgers Take Over Second Place In NL West in four run 7-3 win

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the San Francisco Giants (39-32) swept the Los Angeles Dodgers (39-33) at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles 7-3.

Neither team scored in the first three innings of game three. In the fourth inning the Giants took up where they left off in yesterday’s game scoring two runs. Michael Conforto hit a sacrifice fly and LaMonte Wade Jr. scored for the 1-0 lead. Yastrzemski singled Joc Pederson home for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the Dodgers James Outman singled and David Peralta scored. It was a close game 2-1 going into the fifth inning.

San Francisco got another run in the fifth taking a 3-1 lead. Brandon Crawford scored when Wade Jr. grounded out. The Dodgers kept this game close; Freddie Freeman scored off a Peralta single but they were still trailing 3-2.

The Giants blew this game open in the sixth inning. They scored four runs with Conforto, Yastrzemski, Luis Matos and Blake Sabol all crossing home plate for a 7-2 lead. San Francisco had a couple of singles and one double in the inning. Each team had seven hits but it was the Giants that held the significant lead going into the eighth inning.

San Francisco held the 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Giants were three outs away from the sweep. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the inning but it was too little too late and the Giants had not only the sweep but their seventh win in a row and a move in the NL West to second place. The Giants did walk a run in.

It was a solid game for S.F. pitcher Logan Webb who went seven innings allowing eight hits and two runs. Those two earned runs would be all that the Dodgers would get through eight innings. The Giants did everything they needed to do to sweep the Dodgers finishing a most successful road trip.

Notes: San Francisco won the first game of the series on Friday night after trailing by the score of 4-0 going into the seventh inning. It was another come from behind victory and the Giants who had to go 11 innings to get the win.

In game two on Saturday night the Giants saw something that the Dodgers had not seen since 1898. The Giants shut Los Angeles out to the tune of 15-0, the worst shutout loss for the Dodgers since they were in Brooklyn.

San Francisco will return home to take on the San Diego Padres in a four game series that will begin Monday night. The Giants are undecided as to who will take the mound in this game. The Padres will send Michael Wacha in this game with first pitch scheduled for 6:45 PM. Wacha has a 7-2 win/loss record and a 2.89 ERA.

MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O: Deion understands the chances of losing left foot; Ohtani on pace to hit 51 homers; plus more

Former Atlanta Braves star and current Colorado Buffaloes football head coach Deion Sanders says he understands about having his left foot amputated and wants to get ready for the football season for 2023.(AP News file photo)

On the MLB The Show podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Former Atlanta Brave star and current University of Colorado football head coach Neon Deion Sanders may lose his left foot due to circulation issues. Sanders had two toes amputated and can’t feel his left foot. Sanders said he knows the risks and has eight toes left and said he pretty much understands.

#2 The Los Angeles Angels Shohei Ohtani is on his way to setting records the two way hitter and pitcher is on a pace to hit 51 home runs and is on a 14 game hit streak belting out his 23rd home run on Saturday at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City.

#3 The Tampa Bay Rays when they set sail for this current road trip they probably had lot of confidence they could handle the Oakland A’s who split a four game series with them then the Rays went to San Diego and faced Padres pitcher Blake Snell who struck out 12 batters in a 2-0 shutout at Petco Park.

#4 On Pride night at Dodgers Stadium the main gate was blocked by protesters when Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were uninvited by the Dodgers because they received complaints from the Catholic Church that the sisters dressing up like nuns were sac religious and were invited back because of the protests. The Dodgers later received complaints from former vice president Mike Pence and Senator Marco Rubio for reinviting the sisters.

#5 We didn’t get a chance to ask you about MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and his remarks from last Thursday regarding the Oakland A’s saying the A’s had their Tuesday reverse boycott and got a crowd of 27,000 plus that was over their average attendance and that the City of Oakland never really had a plan to keep the A’s in Oakland.

Giants Beat Dodgers In 11 Innings 7-5

Friday night the San Francisco Giants (37-32) took on the Dodgers (39-31) down at Dodger Stadium with the opportunity to make a move in the NL West and make a move they did defeating the Dodgers 7-5 in the opening game of the series. This three game series is only one of two three game series coming up for the Giants that could make a huge impact.

Following the Dodger series, the Giants will play the Padres for four games starting Monday night and a three-game meeting against the Arizona Diamondbacks starting Friday night. Only 4.5 games separate these three clubs with San Francisco currently in third place with Arizona in first and the Dodgers in second.

Friday night’s game show cased one of the longest, fiercest rivalries in baseball; a 131—year history between these two storied franchises. It all began in the late 19th century when both of these clubs were based in New York City.

Fast forward and this long-standing rivalry that got underway Friday night to continue that tradition. The Dodgers won the last series they played back in April. The difference in this game; the Giants are playing a whole lot better then the last time these two clubs met coming off a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Emmet Sheehan was on the mound for the Dodgers in his first MLB start. Sheehan pitched six innings walking two and striking out three. The Giants featured John Brebbia who threw for one inning, for one walk and one strike out as an opener.

Friday night game recap: The first four innings of this game were quiet for both clubs. In the fifth inning the Dodgers put four runs up on the board. Will Smith singled, J.D. Martinez doubled and James Outman had another single. Left fielder Michael Conforto had a fielding error and when the dust had settled Los Angeles had built a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh inning an errant hit off the bat of Wilmer Flores threatened to put him out of the game. The ball hit him on the foot which brought him down in obvious pain but he was able to stay in the game. After the mishap Flores went on to knock a home run into the left field seats with Thairo Estrada on base and the Giants were back in this game 4-2.

Victor Gonzalez took over on the mound for the Dodgers in the eighth inning. The Los Angeles bullpen has been struggling terribly of late. Gonzalez walked one runner and gave up a couple of hits. Joc Pederson singled Brandon Crawford home and this was a one run game 4-3.

The Giants didn’t have a hit through six innings but really turned things around in the seventh and eighth. Thairo Estrada hit a sacrifice fly and Austin Slater scored to tie up this game 4-4. San Francisco took the lead 5-4 when Pederson scored off a Casey Schmitt infield single.

Once again we saw more come from behind play from San Francisco; from being down 4-0 to taking the lead 5-4. Dodger Stadium had grown silent.

Camilo Doval would come in and try to close out this game for San Francisco in the bottom of the ninth inning. Singles from Miguel Rojas, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman tied up the game 5-5.

The game would go into extra innings. The Dodgers have not lost an extra innings game this season and the Giants were hoping to hand them their first. Neither team could score and this game went into the 11th inning. Crawford who had been quiet all night really stepped up with a single.

Patrick Bailey scored from third and San Francisco took the lead 6-5. A Slater single drove Luis Matos home for a 7-5 lead. After a very messy bottom of the 11th San Francisco held on for the two run win.

Game two of this series will be played at Dodgers Stadium on Saturday with first pitch at 6:10 PM. The Giants will start lefthander Alex Wood (1-1 ERA 4.80) he’ll be opposed by the Dodger righthander Bobby Miller (3-0 ERA 0.78)

San Francisco Giants day off report: Giants Gear Up For Series With Rival Dodgers

Giants Gear Up For Series With Rival Dodgers

By Barbara Mason

Thursday the San Francisco Giants (36-32) took a well-deserved day off after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, their third sweep of the season. It was yet another come-from- behind win the Giants have seen from this team, winning by the score of 8-5.

You just cannot count this team out these days. Mike Yastrzemski hit a two-run homer in the ninth with two outs and two strikes to tie up the game. Thairo Estrada put the finishing touches on in the tenth inning to give San Francisco the win and the sweep. The Giants are riding on a four game winning streak right now.

The Giants bullpen was terrific with a combined five relievers turning in seven scoreless innings. Tyler Rogers got the win with a perfect ninth inning. Camilo Doval got his 18th save in 19 games. It gets very tough for the team when they go down early and have to play from behind but, San Francisco has gotten very proficient in these situations and this has been huge for the Giants.

Friday night the Giants travel to Los Angeles to take on the rival Dodgers (38-30) in a three-game series.

The Giants will assign John Brebbia (2-0 ERA 3.25) to start on Friday night. Alex Wood (1-1 ERA 4.80) had been mentioned. Wood has been out with a lower back injury and will not start on Friday, but may be able to take the mound for this series. The Dodgers might start Matt Andriese (0-0 ERA 0.00) on the hill for Los Angeles.

The Giants defense will be dealing with the likes of Max Muncy with 18 homers, Freddie Freeman with a .331 batting average and J.D. Martinez with 47 RBIs.

The Giants have a lot of fire power of their own in their line-up. Michael Conforto leads the team in not only homers with 12 but also RBIs (36). Thairo Estrada comes in with a .296 batting average. San Francisco has a multitude of offensive weapons with Austin Slater, Joc Pederson, Wilmer Flores, LaMonte Wade Jr., Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski. Bottom line, the Dodgers will have their hands full in this one.

First pitch is scheduled at Dodger Stadium for 7:10 PM.

San Francisco Wins in 10 innings beats St Louis 8-5 at Busch Stadium

San Francisco Wins In Extra Innings Beating St. Louis 8-5

By Barbara Mason

Wednesday afternoon the San Francisco Giants (36-32) finished up their three game series with the St. Louis Cardinals (27-42) coming back from a 5-3 deficit to win in ten innings 8-5 for a three game sweep at Busch Stadium in St Louis.

In game one, the Giants came back from behind to win 4-3 and on Tuesday they crushed St. Louis 11-3. Wednesday afternoon Anthony DeSclafani took the mound for the Giants and Jordan Montgomery was on the hill for the Cards.

Tuesday game recap: The Giants got an early lead in the opening inning. Thairo Estrada and Patrick Bailey both singled giving San Francisco a 2-0 lead. Austin Slater and Luis Matos scored in the first inning.

St. Louis had a quiet first inning but had a most productive second inning loading the bases. Tommy Edman knocked a long ball right (385 feet) into the stands giving St. Louis a 4-2 lead. Nolan Arenado, Dylan Carlson and Paul DeJong all scored on that Edman home run.

The Cardinals would add another run in the third inning. Nolan Gorman walked and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jordan Walker singled Gorman home and it was starting to look like DeScalfani’s time on the mound was coming to an end.

Jakob Junis would take over on the hill for the Giants in the fourth inning. The Cardinals starting pitcher J Montgomery was having a great game once he settled down after a shaky first inning. He had retired 16 players in a row going into the sixth inning once he got on track.

San Francisco continued to trail after five innings 5-2 but have a number of come from behind wins under their belt lately. They had four innings left in the game to make a move.

The Giants would pull a little closer in the seventh inning scoring one run. Mike Yastrzemski singled David Villar home. After a quiet eighth inning, the Giants had one inning left to either tie or win this game. It was a three and out eighth inning for San Francisco. They badly needed some offense in the ninth inning.

In the ninth inning LaMonte Wade Jr. walked but with two outs it came down to San Francisco’s final out and Mike Yastrzemski. He answered with a two run home run (417 feet) and the tie game 5-5. Late inning offense has been on point for San Francisco of late.

The game would go into extra innings. The Giants had gone from their final out, their final strike in the ninth inning to a remarkable 8-5 lead in the tenth inning. Thairo Estrada, Wilmer Flores and LaMonte Wade Jr. all singled driving three runs home. Camilo Doval closed this game for San Francisco and the Giants had the sweep, their third of the season in this come from behind win 8-5.

San Francisco will have the day off Thursday before heading to Los Angeles on Friday to take on the Dodgers in a three game series. Bobby Miller will take the mound for Los Angeles with a 3-0 win/loss record and a 0.78 ERA. San Francisco is still undecided. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: Big payroll Padres continue to struggle; Brewers Adames out of hospital on 10 day IL for concussion; plus more

San Diego Padres Michael Wacha pitches during first inning against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York on Sat May 27, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 The San Diego Padres (24-28) who took another loss on Saturday to the New York Yankees at Yankees Stadium, the Padres had big expectations this year but even with Fernando Tatis Jr, Juan Soto, and Manny Machado the Padres are holding down fourth place in the NL West still there a lot of the season to make that payroll payoff.

#2 During a game against the San Francisco Giants on Friday night at American Family Park the Milwaukee Brewers Willy Adames just avoided suffering fractures when he was sitting the dugout and was struck by teammate Brian Anderson that struck him in the head. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said that was a scary moment. Adames has been released from the hospital is in good spirits and is on the 10 IL for concussion protocols.

#3 Yankees manager Aaron Boone who has been kicked out of three of the last ten games said the last ejection was a weird experience. Last Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles Boone was arguing a third strike call and lost it when umpire Edwin Moscoso turned his back to him. It got heated and Crew chief Chris Guccione had to step in between them. Boone who had spittle came out of his mouth towards Moscoso’s direction ended up being suspended by MLB Sr Supervisor VP of on field operations Michael Hill after reviewing it Thursday night.

#4 There was damage control for the Los Angeles Dodgers who uninvited the Sisters of Perpetual who are a drag group who serve as a charity, protest and satirical performance were reinvited on Jun 16th after being disinvited. The Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw tweeted out that the Dodgers will be hosting a “Christian and Faith Night” at Dodger Stadium on Jul 30th. Can you talk a little about the politics of this situation.

#5 Charlie the Nevada State Legislature will have a chance to vote on the Oakland A’s Tropicana ballpark. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo said that the ballpark tax credits in the neighborhood of $180 million won’t pass unless their a is budget passed for the state. State Legislature Democrats say they won’t for the resolution for the ballpark because that puts taxpayers at risk if the A’s fail to profit once the park is complete. But as you know what’s said up front is different than what’s negotiated behind closed doors.

MLB podcast with Charlie O: Was Scherzer suspension too excessive?; Mad Bum out at Arizona but LA might be interested; plus more

New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer pleads his case that has clean hands in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wed Apr 19, 2023, but umpires ruled he had a sticky substance on his hands after he was ordered to wash his hands and was suspended for ten days by MLB (AP News photo)

On the MLB podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Charlie O, Last Wednesday at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, New York Mets Max Scherzer said that he was supervised by an MLB official when he was ordered to wash his hands during his last start to remove what the umpiring crew termed as “sticky substance” apparently that didn’t work he was tossed from the game and hit with a ten day suspension in your view Charlie O was this a justified ejection and suspension?

#2 Scherzer sat on the MLB Players Association representatives during the last contract negotiations and he’s been active with the players union is it a conspiracy to say that their might be some retribution from baseball for his union activity?

#3 The Arizona Diamondbacks released pitcher Madison Bumgarner on Friday. Bumgarner had been struggling going 0-3 ERA 10.26. The Dodgers might be interested in his services. The Diamondbacks are on the hook for $34 million remaining on his five year contract. There is this and next season remaining on the deal.

#4 Can you believe how the Chicago Cubs Drew Smyly’s no hit perfect game ended when Smyly went to field a grounder in between home and the mound hit by the Los Angeles Dodgers David Peralta Cubs catcher Yan Gomes flipped over Smyly’s back. Smyly lost his balance and ended up on the ground holding the ball but it was too late as Peralta was on base and the perfect game was no more.

#5 Can’t leave out the toughest story of the week the announcement of Oakland A’s team president David Kaval announcing the moving of the team to Las Vegas. Kaval announcing on Wednesday night the A’s have a binding agreement at the old Wild Wild West location at Tropicana and I 15 to build a new A’s park. First Charlie how heartbreaking is this for Oakland and the Bay Area?
