#1 Former New York Mets manager Davey Johnson who commandeered the Mets to the World Series Championship over the Boston Red Sox in 1986 has passed away at age 82. Mets media relations representative Jay Horwitz announced that Johnson’s wife Susan told him of his death after suffering a long illnes in Sarasota Florida. Johnson died on Friday. Johnson played second base for the Baltimore Orioles who won the Series titles in 1966 and 1970.

#2 Houston Astros outfielder Taylor Trammell will not be disciplined by Major League Baseball after umpires took Trammell’s multi colored bat after New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone requested that umpires check the bat after Trammell hit a double. Trammell said that appreciated MLB’s explanation that their was discoloration on the two colored bat.

#3  Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani threw for 3.2 innings, 70 pitches, 44 strikes, and topped out at 101.5 mph and allowed three hits and a walk and struck out five hitters. in spite of the good outing by Ohtani the Dodgers lost to the O’s 2-1.

#4  Los Angeles Angels minor league player Rio Foster is listed in critical condition after being involved in a auto accident on Friday morning. Foster was reportedly receiving medical care at a local hospital and played for the High A Tri City Dust Devils in Pasco. Tri City canceled it’s ball game against Hillsboro on Friday night. The Dust Devils said that thoughts and prayers are with Foster and his passenger who both in critical condition. Foster was hitting .267 with ten home runs and 40 RBIs.

#5  The Los Angeles Angels continue to stumble and the Sacramento A’s continue to run up the victory column. Neither will get into the post season but it’s been a race to get out of the cellar for the A’s who are now a game and half behind the fourth place Angels and with a win on Sunday the A’s would be within a half game of getting out of last place and sweeping the Angels in a three game series in Anaheim.

Morales Earns First MLB Win as A’s Beat Angels 7-2 for Series Victory

WEST SACRAMENTO — After losing their series to the Tampa Bay Rays at home last week, the A’s got back into the series win column on Saturday night, defeating the Angels 7-2 and taking the first two games of the three-game set.

The A’s sent Luis Morales to the mound for just his second major league start on Saturday. Morales didn’t disappoint, as the 22-year-old right-hander from Cuba tossed five innings of one-run ball while scattering five hits and two walks.

“I thought he got better and better as he went,” Mark Kotsay said after Morales stranded the bases loaded in the first inning.

“I’m very blessed and enjoying the process,” Morales said after his first MLB win. “It’s been a long road, but I’m just enjoying the process.”

The Bullpen

The A’s bullpen was impressive once again, allowing only one run in four innings of work.

Justin Sterner pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Tyler Ferguson came on and tossed a scoreless seventh. However, Ferguson ran into some trouble with one out in the eighth as he walked two batters. Mark Kotsay had seen enough and elected to go to Sean Newcomb for the last two outs of the inning. It worked out, as Newcomb struck out the next two batters swinging.

In the ninth, Newcomb gave up one run but was able to secure the win for the A’s. All in, Newcomb tossed one and two-thirds innings while striking out three and giving up one run.

The Bats

The A’s offense wasn’t clicking as much as on Friday, but they did enough to take care of the Angels.

Colby Thomas got the A’s going again early on Saturday as he clubbed a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the A’s an early lead.

Darell Hernaiz kept the party going in the third inning with a two-RBI single to make it a 4-1 game.

The A’s scored again in the fifth inning on Brent Rooker’s 25th homer of the season, a 421-foot shot into the Sacramento night.

They weren’t done yet. The A’s added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to Brett Harris and Rooker RBI singles. The A’s built a commanding 7-1 lead while tallying eight hits on the night.

The A’s improved to 56-69 as they continue to try to climb back to the .500 mark.

The A’s will send Jeffrey Springs (10-8, 4.06 ERA) to the mound as they look to sweep the Angels. José Soriano (8-9, 3.84 ERA) is set to start for Los Angeles.

Late Angels Rally Sinks A’s in Extras

The Sacramento Athletics took an early lead and held it until late, but the Los Angeles Angels fought back and snatched a 2-1 walk-off victory in the bottom of the tenth at Angel Stadium on Tuesday night.

The game began quietly, with both sides trading quick outs and strong defensive plays. A’s starter Mitch Spence, making his second start of the season, delivered five scoreless innings, a bright spot for a rotation that has struggled mightily of late. Spence kept the Angels off balance, scattering three hits and a walk while striking out four. The Athletics’ bullpen, which came in with the highest ERA in the majors at 6.03, initially picked up where Spence left off, preserving a slim lead into the late innings.

The A’s offense was kept mostly silent by Angels starter José Soriano through the first five innings, but finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Max Schuemann drew a walk and advanced to third on Brent Rooker’s sharp double down the left field line. Tyler Soderstrom followed with a groundout that scored Schuemann, giving the green and gold a 1-0 lead.

However, the A’s bats were otherwise quiet, recording just six hits all night. Rooker’s double was the only extra-base hit outside of Nick Kurtz’s seventh-inning double, but the rookie was left stranded as the A’s failed to capitalize on a potential insurance run.

The Angels tied it up in the bottom of the eighth with a pinch-hit solo home run from Travis d’Arnaud off T.J. McFarland. That blast was the 103rd home run allowed by A’s pitching this season, a pace that threatens to break the club’s dubious 1964 record of 220.

After a scoreless ninth, the game went to extras with the Athletics placing Luis Urías at second. Reid Detmers retired the side with two strikeouts and a groundout, stranding Urías and keeping the game tied. In the bottom of the tenth, the Angels’ Jo Adell started at second and was pushed to third by a Kevin Newman groundout. With two outs, the A’s intentionally walked Zach Neto, but Nolan Schanuel ended it with a single to center, driving in Adell and handing the Athletics their 43rd loss of the year.

The defeat dropped the A’s to 26-43 and extended their losing streak against the Angels to seven games. They also remained in last place in the American League West, now 12 games behind first-place Houston. The loss wasted a quality start from Spence and underscored the A’s recent struggles to generate offense. While the A’s have been hitting .269 as a team over the past 11 games, fifth in the majors, the bats were mostly missing on Tuesday night.

The bullpen’s woes continued, with McFarland surrendering the game-tying home run and Tyler Ferguson (0-1) taking the loss after giving up the winning run in the 10th. Oakland’s relievers have just two wins in their last 32 games and continue to lead the majors in walks issued, a trend that proved costly once again.

There were a few bright spots for the A’s despite the loss. Lawrence Butler extended his streak of reaching base safely to 21 of his last 23 games, and rookie Max Schuemann scored the Athletics’ lone run, showing his knack for getting on base. But in a game where both teams combined for just one walk each over the first five innings, the difference came down to one clutch hit in extra innings.

The Athletics will try to avoid a sweep when they wrap up the series on Wednesday afternoon. Left-hander JP Sears (5-5, 5.21 ERA) will take the mound against Angels righty Kyle Hendricks (2-6, 5.34 ERA). With the A’s bullpen in need of a reset, another strong start will be crucial if the green and gold hope to snap their current losing skid.

Giants lose 4-1 to Angels in a pitcher’s duel

The San Francisco Giants wrapped up their road series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday night. The Giants lost to the Angels 4-1 in the series finale at Angel Stadium. San Francisco fell to 62-53, while Anaheim improved to 58-58.

Tristan Beck (3-1, 3.03 ERA) took the loss after pitching three innings and giving up two hits, three earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts, and one home run. Beck entered the game after Sean Manaea (3-3, 5.10 ERA) pitched four innings and gave up one hit, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts.

The Giants’ starting lineup consisted of LaMonte Wade Jr., Thairo Estrada, Wilmer Flores, Joc Pederson, J.D. Davis, Michael Conforto, Patrick Bailey, Brandon Crawford, Luis Matos, and Ryan Walker. Walker pitched one inning and gave up one hit and three strikeouts.

After one scoreless inning, San Francisco got on the scoreboard. Brandon Crawford was out on a sacrifice fly to Mickey Moniak. Michael Conforto scored for a 1-0 Giants lead with two outs.

Neither team added to the scoreboard until the Angels finally got on the board with a four-run sixth inning. Brandon Drury singled on a line drive to Joc Pederson, who committed a fielding error. Luis Rengifo scored to tie the game 1-1. Shohei Ohtani went to third base, while Drury went to second base. Mike Moustakas homered on a fly ball to right field. Drury scored to put the Angels up 4-1.

Notes
Giants infielder Wilmer Flores improved to a 20-game on-base streak on Wednesday.

Giants bullpen catcher Alex Burg turned 36 on Wednesday.

The Giants made two roster moves on Wednesday. Outfielder Heilot Ramos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, while outfielder A.J. Pollock was placed on the ten-day injured list with a left oblique strain.

The Giants’ Rogers brothers have been putting up almost identical numbers. Taylor (2.52 ERA) has 46 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP, while Tyler (2.54 ERA) has 45 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP — both statistics are as of August 9, 2023.

The Giants will return home to host the Texas Rangers on Friday at 7:15 pm Pacific. The Giants haven’t announced who will start for them, but Jon Gray (7-5, 3.72 ERA) will pitch for the Rangers.

#1 Top story had to be last night’s game in Los Angeles between the Oakland A’s and the Los Angeles Dodgers when A’s and Dodgers fans alike stood up in the top of the fifth inning while the A’s were at bat and chanted “Sell the team” another message loud and clear to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, the owners and A’s owner John Fisher expressing how opposed they are about the Oakland A’s relocation to Las Vegas. Will “Sell the team” become a national rallying cry at MLB parks?

#2 With the New York Mets it started with Max Scherzer expressing his discontent about the teammate and pitcher David Robertson being traded to the Miami Marlins and that he wanted a meeting with the Mets brass and Scherzer got traded to the Texas Rangers. Then Justin Verlander two days later was dealt to the Houston Astros. Are the Mets just trying to get rid of payroll or they know they can’t win even with such superstars on the payroll.

#3 More Astros news starter to the end Framber Valdez threw a no hitter last night against the Cleveland Guardians a pretty much respected offensive team giving up just one walk, one batter short of a perfect game. Valdez’ no hit bid is MLB’s third no hitter of the season.

#4 Can the Los Angeles Angels make the post season with Shohei Ohtani surviving the trade deadline and the Angels waiting for outfielder Mike Trout to return to action. Ohtani was on the trade rumor market for a time but owner Art Moreno but the kibosh on that as the Angels are destined to try and make post season with their superstars.

#5 The Angels also added infielder CJ Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk two right handed hitters from the Colorado Rockies. Do you see this improving the Angels line up in the stretch drive?

#1 Michael, Giants pitcher Alex Cobb pitched a scoreless inning in the All Star Game for the National League he showed off his wears to the nationally televised audience going an inning with a walk and a strikeout.

#2 The talk of the town coming out of the All Star Game was Cobb speaking with Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani about joining the Giants before this month’s trade deadline. Cobb said, “he’s coming to San Francisco.”

#3 A Ohtani acquisition would be a boon for the Giants after the Carlos Correa and Aaron Judge no goes.

#4 Michael talk about how acquiring Ohtani would help San Francisco in the pitching department they’ve got Cobb and Webb as their top starters this could push the Giants over the top as a World Series contender with Ohtani in the rotation.

#5 The Giants open the second half of the season at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The Bucs are eight games below .500 at 41-49 fourth in the NL Central and 8.5 game off the pace. They lost five of their last ten games. No starters have been announced for Friday. How do you see these two teams matching up.

#1 Daniel, tough loss for Oakland on Thursday 8-7 by one run to Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels there was the thought that Ohtani would dominate the A’s line up but they got guys on and were able to score on him.

#2 The A’s picked up five runs on the fourth inning to cut it close, it would seem the A’s knew that had to get Ohtani, they had struggled in this series and wanted to at least try and end the series with a hard effort to get after Ohtani.

#3 The A’s have some future hitters in the their line up Brent Rooker went deep with a three run home run and catcher Shea Langeliers hit a two run homer in the fourth during that A’s five run rally.

#4 Shohei had one of his most off balanced games in recent memories and struggled against the last place A’s line up going six innings, giving up three hits on five runs, walked two batters, however Ohtani did strike out eight batters.

#5 The A’s open a three game series tonight against the Cincinnati Reds the A’s come off a tough road trip but hope to take advantage of home field. The Reds have been struggling losing six of their last ten games and are 10-15 coming into the Coliseum tonight.

Halos beat A’s 8-7 take series 3-1; Oakland touches up Ohtani for 5 run 4th but it wasn’t enough

The Oakland A’s (5-21) and the Los Angeles Angels (14-12) met for the fourth time this week on Thursday afternoon in Anaheim. The A’s hoped to win to gain a split of the four-game series. It would be daunting as the Angels had Shosei Ohtani on the mound. Ohtani entered the game with a 3-0 record and an ERA of 0.64. The A’s had lefty J P Sears handling the pitching chores. Sears had yet to win a game this year, and his ERA was 4.98.

The oddsmakers favored Ohtani and the Angels. They were right the Angels won the game 8-7. Ohtani had a meltdown in the fourth inning when the A’s plated five runs to tie the game at five. Ohtani stayed in the game, and his teammates supported him enough to make him the winning pitcher.

The Angels put five on the board in the bottom of the third. Sears walked Angels’ catcher Chad Wallach to start the inning. Taylor Ward singled, sending Wallach to third. Ohtani doubled to drive in Wallach with the Angels’ first run. Ward stopped at third.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe’s sacrifice fly drove in Ward with the second run of the inning. Sears now had to face the hottest hitter in the Angels’ lineup, Brandon Drury. In the previous three games, Drury had homered three times and driven in nine. The battle was on. It did go well for Sears as Drury blasted another home run to put the Angels ahead 5-0. It was Drury’s fourth homer of the series, and he has batted in 12.

The A’s answered in the top of the fourth. Shohei Ohtani faced nine men in the first three innings and retired them all. Things changed in the fourth. A’s leadoff hitter Esteury Ruiz reached first when hit by a pitch. Ruiz stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.

Ohtani walked Conner Capel. The A’s had two men on and no out. The next hitter was Brent Rooker. Rooker, filling in for the injured Set Brown in left field, has been a very productive hitter. Rooker homered for the seventh time in 2023 to make it a 5-3 game. Ohtani hit Jace Peterson with a pitch. The next batter was Shea Langeliers. Langeliers homered over the wall in center field to tie the game. Ohtani settled down, and the A’s could not do more damage.

In the bottom of the fifth, J P Sears was still on the hill for Oakland. Sears retired Ohtani for the first out. The Angels’ third baseman Anthony Rendon singled. A’s manager Mark Kotsay removed Sears from the game and brought in righty Chad Smith to pitch.

The next batter, Hunter Renfroe, singled, sending Rendon to third. Smith walked Drury and Luis Rengifo. Rengifo’s walk forced in Rendon with the Angels’ sixth run. Gio Urshela’s fielder’s choice drove in Drury with the second run of the inning and the seventh of the game. The Angels led 7-5 after five complete.

The Angels added a run in the sixth. Domingo Acevedo was on the hill for the A’s. Acevedo retired the first two hitters he faced, Taylor Ward and Mike Trout. Shohei Ohtani tripled and scored on Rendon’s double to put the Angels up by three runs, 8-5.

The A’s, in the eighth, plated two runs off Angels’ reliever Jose Quijada. With one out, Langeliers singled. Mark Kotsay sent Jesus Aguilar to the plate to pinch-hit for Ryan Noda. Aguilar loves to hit lefties, and he did his job when he singled up the middle. Langeliers stopped at second. Alesmys Diaz then hit a ground ball that hit the mound and changed direction.

Angels’ second baseman Luis Rengifo misplayed the ball, and Langeliers was able to score. Kotsay sent Carlos Perez in to pinch-hit for Tony Kemp. Perez, like Aguilar, singled to drive the big man in to bring the A’s within a run of tying the game. Angels’ skipper Phil Nevin brought in left Aaron Loup to quench the fire. Loup got the Angels out of the jam. The A’s failed to score in the ninth.

Game Notes- With the loss, the A’s drop to 5-21. The Angels improved to 14-12.The winning pitcher was Ohtani. He is now 4-0. Sears took the loss. He is 0-2.The Line Score for Oakland was seven runs, seven hits, and no errors. The A’s homered twice in the game. The Angels’ line was eight runs, ten hits, and one error. The Angels outscored the A’s 34-24 in the series.

The A’s will play the Cincinnati Reds for three games starting Friday night in Oakland. The A’s have yet to announce their starter for Friday’s game. Luis Cessa (0-3 ERA 10.80) will pitch for the Reds. The game will start at 6:38 pm.

The time of Thursday’s game was 3:03. 21,740 fans watched the Angels beat the A’s 8-7.
