Raiders Fall to Steelers in Final Minutes 13-10

By Barbara Mason

Christmas Eve the Las Vegas Raiders (6-9) traveled cross-country to the frozen tundra of Acrisure Stadium home of the Pittsburg Steelers (7-8). Both teams are in the hunt for a playoff berth needing a lot of help.

The Raiders took the field Saturday evening with snow flurries throughout the first half. The Steelers got a game winning touchdown with 46 seconds left from wide receiver George Pickens who scored on a 14 yard pass for the 13-10 win.

Las Vegas got right to work driving downfield to start the first quarter. The Raiders got up on the scoreboard in their first possession taking a 7-0 lead. Derek Carr connected with Hunter Renfrow for 14 yards and the early lead. The Steelers was unable to score in the opening quarter.

The Raiders defense was doing a great job holding Pittsburg to a single field goal late int he second quarter. Las Vegas would extend their lead with five seconds left in the half. Daniel Carlson made a 40 yard field goal for a 10-3 halftime lead. This had been an efficient first half for both teams with very few penalties and no challenges. Pittsburg would get the ball to start the second half.

The Las Vegas defense continued to dominate and at 11:57 in the third quarter Denzel Perryman intercepted the ball at the Raider 29 returning it to the Pittsburg 47 yard line.

The Steelers returned the favor on the very next play intercepting a Carr pass intended for Foster Moreau returning it to the Steeler 44. The Raiders’ had squandered a golden opportunity. Las Vegas held the Steelers to a 52 yard field goal attempt which failed with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

With 4:40 left in the third, the Steelers pulled in their second interception of the game. A pass intended for Hunter Renfrow was tipped by Renfrow and landed in the hands of Pittsburg’s Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Raiders defense continued to come up big holding Pittsburg time after time.

The Raiders offense had cooled off even more than the 12 degree temperature on the field. Going into the fourth quarter there had been three interceptions, a missed field goal in this game with the Raiders stubbornly holding onto a slim 10-3 lead.

At 9:47 in the fourth quarter the Raiders held the Steelers to a 40 yard field goal. Las Vegas still led 10-6. With under two minutes the Raider defense collapsed allowing the Steelers to drive deep into the red zone. With 46 ticks left on the clock the Steelers Kenny Pickett connected with George Pickens for 14 yards in the end zone to take the lead 13-10.

Derek Carr would target Hunter Renfrow deep in Steeler territory that was intercepted by Pittsburgh and that was the game. The final was 13-10.

Las Vegas did not score once in the second half, not the first time we have seen this . It was a total collapse on both sides of the ball in the second half. Derek Carr finished with 143 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Josh Jacobs only had 44 rushing yards. With stats like this it’s pretty hard to win a football game.

The Raiders will travel home to take on the former rival San Francisco 49ers on New Year’s Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 PM.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Raiders Christmas eve win in Pittsburgh can keep post season hopes alive

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Keelan Cole (84) catches a 30-yard touchdown pass against New England Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones (25) during the second half at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun 12-18-22 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony:

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders (6-8) got a win in a zany play when the New England Patriots Rhomondre Stevenson who got a hand off and ran for 23 yards and took the ball and flipped the ball back to teammate Jakobi Meyers who threw the ball cross field in order to keep the ball alive but the Raiders Chandler Jones was there to pick it up and run it 48 yards for a touchdown with no time left in the Raiders shocking 30-24 win.

#2 Tony did you feel that the Raiders had a little extra effort, a little extra something, a little anger in them after that Thursday Night Football loss to the Los Angeles Rams and they weren’t going to take no for an answer from the Patriots last Sunday?

#3 Sheer determination for a team that had won three in a row they believed in themselves and it showed it with grit toward the end of the fourth quarter to make the come back with just 32 seconds left the Raiders got miracles from Keelan Cole who caught a 30 yard pass for a touchdown with 32 seconds left and the Jones recovery with no time left.

#4 The Raiders are in Pittsburgh to face the Steelers (6-8) on Christmas Eve at Acrisure Stadium. The Steelers have won three of their last four games. The Steelers came away with a rather handedly win over the Carolina Panthers 24-16 last Sunday. Tony how do you you see this match up on Saturday?

Raiders Beat New England Off A Bizarre Patriot Play 30-24

Raiders Beat New England Off A Bizarre Patriot Play 30-24

By Barbara Mason

The Las Vegas Raiders (6-8) took on the New England Patriots (7-7) Sunday after losing a close one to the Los Angeles Rams 17-16 last week. The Raiders controlled the first half in that game but had a real letdown in the second half only scoring a field goal in last week’s loss in Los Angeles. The Raiders down 24-17 came back with no time left to beat the Patriots 30-24 on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Raiders had a 17-3 lead after the first two quarters of today’s game in Las Vegas. As in last week’s game, they played a solid first half.

It was not looking very good for Las Vegas allowing the Patriots to score 21 straight points in the second half. When it looked like the Raiders would lose their second straight game Las Vegas scored two touchdowns in the final 32 seconds. it was another thriller for the Raiders as the clock began to wind down. A wilder finish could not have been more beautifully scripted.

With the score tied at 24 and .32 seconds left on the clock the Patriots attempted a number of pitches more than likely trying to avoid overtime. The Patriots did avoid overtime but in favor of the Raiders.

The final lateral was a disaster ending up in the hands of Raider pass-rusher Chandler Jones who got past New England quarterback Mac Jones and saw nothing but open field. He romped for a 48 yard touchdown and the improbable win 30-24.

Derek Carr finished with 231 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Running back Josh Jacobs had 93 rushing yards continuing to shore up the Raider running game. Las Vegas had a cumulative 231 receiving yards with Keelan Cole catching for 50 yards, the team high. Carr and Jacobs both had one fumble but recovered both of them.

This was a most dramatic finish for Las Vegas and really messed with New England’s playoff hopes. It is a shame that the Raiders started to come around so late in the season. A better start by Las Vegas could have possibly put them into a good position for a post-season.

Next week the Raiders will be taking on the Pittsburg Steelers on Saturday evening at 5:15. Both teams have 6-8 records. Las Vegas will be on the road for that game.

On the Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez:

#1 Rich this game against the New England Patriots (7-7) for the Las Vegas Raiders came right down to the wire where this was a must win game for them.

#2 Once again this game came right down to the last two minutes and Raiders quarterback Derek Carr really needed to make it happen down by a touchdown 27-14.

#3 Carr threw to Mack Jones with 3rd and 10 and couldn’t convert as the ball was dropped. this was a game where the Raiders who had a 14-6 at the half. The second half started with the Patriots shutting out the Raiders in the third quarter and in the four the quarter Raiders down 24-17 Raiders Keenan Cole catches a 30 yard pass from quarterback Derek Carr which tied the game up at 24-24.

#4 With no time left on the clock the Raiders Chandler Jones picks up a Patriot fumble and runs it back for 48 yards for a return and the game winning touchdown for a Raiders win 30-24. The Raiders win another nail biter.

#5 Rich Raiders improve to 6-8 and get ready to face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers who are also 6-8 in Pittsburgh next Saturday night on Christmas eve. The Raiders can’t lose a game or they’ll be eliminated from the playoffs. Each game is a nail biter.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Raiders have home field against Patriots this Sunday

The Los Angeles Rams Jalen Ramsey (right) wasn’t covering the eyes of Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Devante Adams (17) from watching the Raiders fall but defending him after a completed catch in first half action at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday Night Football Dec 8, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 Rich, It seems that after the Las Vegas Raiders had won three straight that they may have righted the ship but going to Los Angeles and losing to the Rams in the last ten seconds of the game last Thursday night throws that winning streak out the window?

#2 Breaking down the play the Rams in those last ten seconds saw wide out Van Jefferson caught a 23 yard pass from quarterback Baker Mayfield to get the Rams to the promise land for the 17-16 win over the Raiders.

#3 Baker Mayfield was all but given up by the Carolina Panthers and sent packing the Monday before last Thursday’s game. Panther head coach Steve Wilks did not plan to use Mayfield as either as a starter or a back up quarterback. Mayfield wanted out of Carolina and in his first game with the Rams made good use of his time to help LA pick up their fourth win of the season.

#4 It was a game where there was just not enough offense for the Raiders who didn’t score at all in third quarter and just a field goal would have helped them get that fourth straight win but it was all for not in the one point loss.

#5 The Raiders try it all over again as they face the New England Patriots (7-6) this Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Patriots have won four of their last six games and head coach Bill Belichick has not lost his touch in his clever ways to win a football game.

Rams Steal Game From Raiders In Final Seconds 17-16

Rams Steal Game From Raiders In Final Seconds 17-16

By Barbara Mason

On Thursday Night Football the Las Vegas Raiders (5-8) took on the Los Angeles Rams (4-9) on National television at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. It went right down to the wire and the Raiders had their three game win streak broken in the last ten seconds of the contest losing to the Rams 17-16.

The Rams have struggled mightily the entire season while the Raiders have been on fire winning their last three games. Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams have been the mainstays for Las Vegas.

The Raiders first possession in the opening quarter culminated in a one yard rush from Josh Jacobs. The extra point was good and Las Vegas took an early 7-0 lead. The Rams went three and out giving the Raiders the opportunity to extend their lead which they wasted no time in doing so. Daniel Carlson made a 52 yard field goal and Las Vegas took a 10-0 lead.

Just last Monday quarterback Baker Mayfield was released from the Panthers and was snatched up by the Rams. His first play of the game, their second possession, was a long pass into Raider territory after one day of practice. He actually delved into the Ram playbook on his flight into Los Angeles. The Rams didn’t find the end zone and had to settle for a Matt Gay 55 yard. field goal trailing 10-3 going into the second quarter.

The Raiders would tack on a second field goal in their third possession. Carlson would kick a 31 yard field goal giving Las Vegas a 13-3 lead. The Rams went on an amazing drive that was squelched by a Los Angeles fumble recovered by the Raiders and Las Vegas was back in business.

Las Vegas drove into Ram territory with less then three minutes left in the half. When another Las Vegas score seemed imminent, the Rams intercepted the ball in the end zone. The score at the half was 13-3 in favor of the Raiders.

Mayfield had a decent first half considering all that has led up to his playing in this game. What he has been through since last Monday made this a one of kind commendable performance. The Raiders leveled the amazing field with some great catches by Adams, one for 35 yards and a second for 32 yards. Jacobs finished the half with 58 rushing yards and Adams had 71 receiving yards.

Neither team scored in the third quarter. The Raiders were delivered a devastating blow in the quarter when Jacobs left the game with a right hand injury. He headed into the locker room for x-rays.

The Raiders opened the fourth quarter with a 32 yard Carlson field goal. Las Vegas now led 16-3. With 3:19 left in the game the Rams scored their first touchdown of the game but still trailing 16-10. Cam Akers rushed for a one yard carry and the extra point was good. Los Angeles would need a stop and the Raiders were looking for a couple of first downs to put this game away.

The Raiders went three and out and the Rams had 1:45 left on the clock to drive the length of the field. Las Vegas punted to the Los Angeles two yard line. With ten seconds left on the clock Mayfield connected with Van Jefferson for 23 yards and the touchdown. The extra point was good and the Rams had stolen this game from the Raiders.

Derek Carr finished the game with 137 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. Jacobs had 99 rushing yards and 15 receiving. Despite the hand injury Jacobs was back on the field in the fourth quarter .Adams had 71 rushing yards all in the first half. Las Vegas had a very disappointing second half.

When it seemed that the Raiders may have this game in hand Mayfield came up with an amazing 98 yard drive scoring with ten seconds left on the clock. His performance was nothing short of amazing in the second half and you have to give hime all the credit in the world.

This was a devastating loss for the Raiders and it breaks their three game winning streak and blows any playoff hopes out of the water. They will next take on the New England Patriots in Week 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 at Allegiant Stadium.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Superbowl Wayne: Raiders fail to execute drop game to Rams in 4th quarter

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Van Jefferson are thrilled after the game winning touchdown with ten seconds left in the game for the win over the Las Vegas Raiders at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Thu Dec 8, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Superbowl:

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders (5-8) who had a three game win streak dropped a game when they were ahead 16-3 with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter when the Los Angeles Rams (4-9) Cam Akers carried for a yard to cut the Raiders lead to 16-10.

#2 The Rams quarterback Baker Mayfield throwing his first game as a Ram after coming to the Rams just 48 hours early in the week and came out and threw the game winning touchdown for 23 yards to Van Jefferson for the 17-16 win.

#3 The Raiders didn’t get on the scoreboard in the third quarter likewise the Rams. It was a crucial third quarter as the Raiders needed to get on the board but not doing so would cost them later in the game.

#4 For Mayfield going 22-35 for 230 yards and one touchdown and the Raiders defense kept after Mayfield all night but the Rams stuck to it and won it with just ten seconds left.

#5 The Raiders made mistakes with getting into penalty trouble and it helped moved the ball against them and the Rams and Mayfield were able to make hay in the final seconds of Thursday Night Football.

#6 The Raiders go up against the New England Patriots (6-6). The Patriots at Allegiant Stadium Sun Dec 18th a 1:05pm kick off. The Pats have been playing .500 ball do they catch the Raiders down after their loss to the Rams or do the Rams get fired up and try to put the Patriots to bed?

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Devante Adams (17) gets some love from the Raiders fans after scoring a touchdown against the Los Angeles Chargers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Dec 4, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

#1 Tony, the Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr thought back to the week when they Raiders lost that dreadful game against the Indianapolis Colts at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and said that was the turning point saying things need to be said and needed to be addressed.

#2 Against the Los Angeles Chargers Carr who threw for 250 yards, two touchdowns, got his team in a good place in the second quarter.

#3 The loss also drops the Chargers to (6-6) and they are now out of the playoff picture and will have to work hard to get back in.

#4 Carr and wide receiver Devante Adams hooked up with Adams eight receptions, 177 yards, and two touchdowns. It was quite an afternoon for the Raiders picking up their third straight win.

#5 Thursday Night Football Tony it’s the Raiders at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The Rams are 3-9 and struggling and the Raiders could very well win their fourth straight game. Tony what’s your prediction in this one.

Raiders Win Third In a Row Beating Los Angeles Chargers 27-20

Raiders Win Third In a Row Beating Los Angeles Chargers 27-20

By Barbara Mason

Sunday afternoon the Las Vegas Raiders (5-7) took on the Los Angeles Chargers (6-6). The Chargers are close to being in playoff conversation and this game is of major importance to Los Angeles. This week they won a thriller at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas edging the Chargers 27-20. The Raiders have been playing great beating the Seahawks last week 40-34 in a most dramatic fashion.

They beat the Broncos the week before that 22-16. The question of the hour is why it took so long for them to get going this season and what could have been had they started the season playing the way they are playing right now.

The Raiders would be challenged in this game by Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert who is having a nice season. The Raider defense would have to step up to contain not only this guy but also wide receiver Keenan Allen.

Las Vegas had a horrible start in the first quarter, in fact it was the thing nightmares are made of. The Raiders not only fumbled away the ball but at 5:07 Derek Carr threw a pick six, intercepted by the Chargers Bryce Callahan giving Los Angeles a 7-0 lead.

Los Angeles extended their lead in the second quarter when Cameron Dicker kicked a 37 yard field goal and the Chargers had a 10-0 lead. The Raiders Josh Jacobs, (hero of last week’s overtime win) rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown.

A Daniel Carlson 55 yard field goal tied up this game at ten with two minutes left in the half. The Chargers were able to take back the lead with 27 ticks left on the clock. Dicker kicked a 34 yard field goal for a Los Angeles advantage 13-10 at the half.

The third quarter was an all-Raider affair, in fact, it was the Carr to Adams show. At 14:28 Derek Carr connected with Devante Adams for 31 yards and a touchdown. This dangerous duo struck again at 10:53 when Carr found Adams open hitting him for 45 yards, the touchdown and a 24-13 lead.

The Raiders would open the fourth quarter with a Daniel Carlson field goal, this one for 25 yards and Las Vegas had the upper hand leading 27-13. The Chargers did score in the final quarter, a Herbert to Keenan Allen strike for 35 yards and the touchdown but that would be it for Los Angeles. The final was 27-20. The Raiders had won three games in a row.

Carr finished with 250 passing yards and two touchdowns with the one interception. Josh Jacobs had not cooled down one bit rushing for 144 yards and Devante Adams received for 177 yards. Aside from the rocky start in the first quarter the missteps did not deter Carr at all and he finished with an outstanding game.

The Las Vegas defense had an equally great game sacking Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert five times. The Raider defense pressured Herbert all afternoon. It was an aggressive effort for this defensive unit. Las Vegas really put the stops on wide receiver Allen as well. This loss really hurt the Chargers playoff hopes.

Next week the Raiders will take on the struggling Los Angeles Rams who lost today to the Seahawks. The Rams now have a shocking 3-9 record. This will be a Thursday night game with kickoff scheduled 5:15 PM on Prime Video.
