Raiders Fall In Final Minute to Colts 25-20

Raiders Fall In Final Minute to Colts 25-20

By Barbara Mason

Last Sunday Nov 6th the Las Vegas Raiders (2-7) lost to the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20. Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns, enough to win most games. Las Vegas only managed 73 rushing yards and the fumble at the end of the game sealed the loss for the Raiders.

Sun Nov 13th the Raiders took on Matt Ryan and the Indianapolis Colts (4-5-1) and fell on the last play of the game 25-20. The Colts scored the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter. A rush by quarterback Matt Ryan up the middle for one yard gave the Colts the early lead 7-0.

In the early minutes of the second quarter Chase McLaughlin kicked a 48 Yd. field goal extending the Indianapolis lead 10-0. Through the first two quarters the Raiders offense was stagnant. In the final minute, at 0:58 Las Vegas showed some life. Quarterback Derek Carr completed a 4 Yd pass to Foster Moreau and a touchdown. The Raiders trailed at the half 13-7 but had finally gotten up on the scoreboard. The Colts had won the coin toss and elected to start the second half.

The Raiders put together an excellent drive late in the third quarter. On a 2nd and 20 Carr found Foster Moreau for 18 yards driving down to the Indianapolis 17 yard line. Moreau was injured during that play and his return was questionable. Three plays later Las Vegas scored when Josh Jacobs rushed for one yard tying up the game at 13. Daniel Carlson kick the extra point giving the Raiders their first lead of the game 14-13.

With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, the Colts put together a successful drive culminating in a Jonathan Taylor touchdown. The attempted two-point conversion failed. Indianapolis took a 19-14 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Raiders scored in the early minutes of the fourth quarter when Derek Carr found Devante Adams in the end zone for 48 yards and the Raiders third touchdown of the day. Las Vegas would attempt a two-point conversion that failed. The Raiders now had a 20-19 lead with 11:36 left in the game.

To this point Matt Ryan had not thrown for a single touchdown. Derek Carr on the other hand had thrown two touchdowns.

The Colts would take back the lead with 5:07 left on the clock 25-20. This was Matt Ryan’s second rushing touchdown of the game. At the two minute warning the Raiders were in Colt territory 1st and 10 at the 49 Yd. line. Las Vegas drove deep into Colt territory and with 55 seconds on the clock had a 4th and seven. It all came down to one final play for the Raiders. An attempted pass from Carr to Adams failed and Indianapolis came away with the win 25-20. Las Vegas had fallen to a dismal 2-7.

The Raiders waited far too long to get this game going. They had a terrible first half and came on strong in the second half but had to play from behind for much of the second half. It was just too little too late.

They had every opportunity to close out this game in the final minute but could not get any offense going. Carr finished with 248 yards passing with two touchdowns, Josh Jacobs had 78 rushing yards and one touchdown, Devante Adams finished with 126 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Next week the Raiders take on the Broncos in Denver a very tough stadium to manage. The atmosphere alone makes winning a challenge. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 PM PT.

Los Vegas Raiders podcast with Rich Perez: Is Josh McDaniels losing the team; Question on the Raiders focus in letting games get away

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell (32) gets a hand on the football to break up an intended pass for the Las Vegas Raiders Devante Adams (17) on Sun Nov 6, 2022 in Jacksonville (AP News photo)

On the Raiders podcast with Rich:

#1 With the Las Vegas Raiders latest loss dropping them to 3-6 they’re playoff hopes looked dashed short of a miracle.

#2 One of the reasons why the Raiders playoff hopes look dimmer and dimmer is just the amount of blown plays and mistake they have made particularly in in their last two road games in New Orleans and Jacksonville.

#3 During training camp first year head coach Josh McDaniels tried to explain to his players the ways of how not to lose. It might be possible that the players forgot that early lesson McDaniels tried to lay down.

#4 The Raiders wide receiver Devante Adams said the Raiders strayed away from what worked earlier in game but the Raiders just couldn’t get any offense going in the second half and quarterback Derek Carr saying serious internal discussions needed to take place.

#5 Those serious discussions that Carr was talking about has to take place and get solved soon enough as the Raiders prepare for Indianapolis Colts for this Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Colts have lost three in a row the Raiders hope to push to extend that losing streak this Sunday.

Raiders win another cliffhanger 17-13 over Broncos; Jacobs redeems himself after first quarter fumble

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr (4) on a give to running back Josh Jacobs (28) in the second half of action at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sun Dec 26, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Rich Perez

Las Vegas Raiders beat writer

The Las Vegas Raiders (8-7) were down by six points when running back Josh Jacobs approached the coaches at the half against the Denver Broncos (7-8) up 13-7 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Jacobs asked them to give him the ball that he will not let the rock get away from him like he did in the first half fumbling the ball away for a turnover.

Jacobs was granted a second chance he made up for the lost football in the first quarter and he took it to the Broncos on seven carries running for 57 yards on the opening series of the second half.

After nine plays and 75 yards of offensive effort the Raiders hit pay dirt scoring as running back Peyton Barber carried for five yards that gave the Raiders a third quarter touchdown that put them ahead 14-13.

Jacobs carried for 129 yards to help beat the Broncos and the win help keep the Raiders post season hopes alive as they move a game over .500. The Broncos now have lost three of their last four games and this puts their playoff hopes in jeopardy.

The Raiders win helped the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East through tiebreakers. The Raiders victory Sunday marks their second straight game. They also had another cliffhanger edging the Cleveland Browns on Sun Dec 19th 16-14. In three of their last four games the Raiders have held their opponents to just 17 or less points.

On Jacobs getting the ball he was gratetful for that second chance to help the Raiders punch it through for that third quarter touchdown, “Just give me a chance to play the style of ball that I want to play. The offensive line, we all came to an agreement and went out there and did it and executed.” said Jacobs. For Jacobs this was his first time rushing for 100 yards in a single game.

The Raiders play their next to last game of the season against the Indianapolis Colts (9-6) this coming Sun Jan 2, 2021 in Indianapolis 10:00AM PST. The Colts have won six of their last seven games. They had a huge win over the Arizona Cardinals (10-5) Sunday in Arizona 22-16.
