#1  The Cleveland Cavaliers Donovan Mitchell will miss the next game against the Chicago Bulls Tuesday night. Mitchell injured his left ankle in a game in Sacramento on Sunday.

Mitchell stepped on the Sacramento King’s Keon Ellis’ foot at center court and lost his balance and rolled over on his left ankle. Mitchell was in pain and had to be escorted off the floor with the trainers to the dressing room.

#2 Portland Trail Blazers general manager Joe Cronin was given a multiyear deal with the Trail Blazers on Monday. The Blazers have improved to over 14 wins compared to this time last season. Portland has 35 wins this season an have gone 22-16 since Jan 19th.

#3 New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson who was out over a month returned last Sunday to face the Phoenix Suns scoring 15 points and getting six assists to help the Knicks to a 112-98 win. While it wasn’t Brunson’s best outing he hit three out of nine from the floor and miss some of his jump shots. Brunson is trying to get his rhythm and timing back.

#4 The Denver Nuggets have been snake bitten since losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 1. The Nuggets now have lost three in row since that 140-139 loss. The loses have been piling up since losing to the San Antonio Spurs Apr 2, Golden State Warriors Apr 4, and Indiana Pacers Apr 6. You would think with all that talent they have they would have been able to snap out it by now?

#5 Some fan was getting smart with the Washington Wizards Marcus Smart and it turned into a shouting match. Smart said a fan crossed the line and was heckling the Wizards bench at TD Garden in Boston while the Wizards were playing the Boston Celtics. Smart a former Celtic said, “You never want to see that, especially for a guy who’s coming back and has given the city everything he has.”

Sacramento Kings podcast Tony Renteria:

Kings Drop a Heartbreaker to Pacers 111-109

The Sacramento Kings (36-39) had every opportunity to beat the Indiana Pacers (44-31) Monday night but when push came to shove they collapsed in the final minutes of the game losing 111-109.

They made some critical mistakes in the fourth quarter but did lead going into the final two minutes. The Pacers had not led the entire second half until Tyrese Haliburton hit a three to take a one-point lead 100-98 with 1:17 left in the game.

With the Kings fighting for a playoff spot this loss is a killer for Sacramento. DeMar DeRozan had the game high with 31 points and Domantas Sabonis had another double double with 16 rebounds and 25 points. Malik Monk missed numerous shots finishing with only five points in 29 minutes of play.

Game recap: The Kings led Indiana after the first 12 minutes of play in a tight match-up 28-27 and at the half had a 60-54 lead. Sacramento outscored the Pacers in the second quarter 32-27. This had been a hotly contested game and going into the second half it was up for grabs.

The Pacers won the third quarter 27-26 but continued to trail in the game 86-81. They had not led since late in the second quarter as the Kings continued to fight to keep the lead. Going into the fourth quarter, the Kings had a fight on their hands.

Throughout the final quarter neither team was able to hit very many shots. It was a very sloppy fourth quarter for both teams. The Kings had the lead in this game with 1:27 left in the game. The Pacers had missed a slew of three’s in the final minutes of the quarter but at 1:17 Tyrese Haliburton hit the three that got Indiana their first lead of the second half 100-98.

The Kings lost this game with some very ineffective offense. They missed five shots in the final two minutes of play and committed five fouls. What is so disappointing is that the Kings had a 16 point lead at one time in the second half.

They were not at all good at the line shooting 64% while the Pacers were perfect at the free throw line. This game was a nail-biter from start to finish but the Kings could not hit the shots that would have made the difference in this game losing it to the Pacers 111-109.

DeMar DeRozan had the game high scoring 31 points and Domantas Sabonis had a double double with 16 rebounds and 25 points. Zach LaVine also had a good game with 20 points. Malik Monk had a sub-par game only scoring five points in 29 minutes of play but he was very good defensively with seven rebounds along with starter Keegan Murray who also had seven rebounds. In this final countdown none of these players can letdown and there was a real letdown Monday night for Sacramento. The fourth quarter was especially sloppy at times.

Game notes: With seven games left on the season, the Sacramento Kings (36-39) took a tough loss the Indiana Pacers (44-31) in a crunch situation. The Pacers are sitting in fourth place in the Eastern Conference while the Kings are hanging on for dear life in tenth place in the Western Conference.

The Kings have to win most of these upcoming seven games. They were blindsided by the Orlando Magic Saturday night to the tune of 121-91. They were due for a productive game and couldn’t get the win over Indiana to start this seven game stretch. It is crunch-time for the Sacramento Kings if they want to get back in this.

Wednesday night the Kings will take on the 16-59 Washington Wizards. This is a must-win for Sacramento despite being on the road. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 4:00 PMPDT at he Capital One Center in DC as Sacramento will be looking to put on end to this horrible nine game losing streak on the road.

Trouble in Sacramento Kings fall to Pacers 122-95

SACRAMENTO–This isn’t going to be like my usual recaps. Normally, I would go through the game quarter by quarter and evaluate its progression. However, I can’t bring myself to write that kind of analysis Sunday night. The Sacramento Kings are broken, and I’m tired of repeating the same narrative every night. This is the lowest point of the season for the Kings, as they fell to the Indiana Pacers 122-95 on Sunday night.

On Sunday, the Kings gave up. It’s as simple as that. In the first half, they played decently enough to stay in the game, albeit against a not-so-good Indiana Pacers team. Both teams scored 52 points in the first half, as the Kings weren’t playing well but hadn’t yet resigned themselves to defeat. De’Aaron Fox scored 15 points in the first half, while no Indiana player had reached double digits.

In the second half, everything unraveled. How did it unravel, you might ask? Well, it was a typical Kings loss. Their defense was poor, their shooting was lackluster, and their effort appeared minimal to nonexistent throughout the entire second half. The team looked as if they had simply given up.

As the game ended and the final buzzer sounded, the Kings suffered a 122-95 loss. De’Aaron Fox led the team with 23 points but was far from efficient, shooting just 7-19 from the field. The Pacers, despite not having any player score more than 20 points, still won by over 25 points.

It was arguably the worst loss of the season, a sentiment echoed by Mike Brown in his postgame comments. When asked by reporter Sean Cunningham if this was the lowest point of the season, Brown replied, “Uh, this is pretty low. We’ve had some other tough moments…” Well, this truly was the lowest moment for the Kings. Sunday’s loss to the Pacers dropped their record to 13-17, four games under .500, marking their worst record of the season so far.

I’m not frustrated with Brown’s comments—after all, what is he supposed to say? He can’t publicly criticize the front office during a postgame press conference, even if it would be entirely justified. This team has dealt with the same issues for years, and the front office has either failed to make a deal to improve the roster or hasn’t even tried.

Frankly, it makes little difference which of these scenarios is true. The simple reality is that they have failed to address well-documented issues, and that responsibility falls on Monte and his team. Brown went on to say in his media availability that he is doing everything he can to find someone on the roster who will step up, stating, “I’m going to keep searching.”

The fans were visibly and audibly frustrated with the team. The Kings were booed off the court, and chants of “Keon Ellis” echoed through the Golden 1 Center rafters late Sunday night.

This is not how the season was supposed to unfold. The offseason addition of DeMar DeRozan and the re-signing of Malik Monk were, on paper, among the better moves the Kings have made in recent memory. While DeRozan’s fit with the team was never perfect, it seemed like a step forward for the franchise. The pitch to DeRozan and his team was simple: “Come to Sacramento for a chance to win.” So far, winning has been left in the rearview mirror for this group.

This was the final game for the Kings before Christmas. Their next matchup will be on Thursday at 7 PM at Golden 1 Center against the Detroit Pistons. Kings GM Monte McNair and owner Vivek Ranadivé must decide on the direction they want to take this franchise in the coming years.

Will they rebuild from scratch and trade the core, or will they retool around one of their current stars? One thing is certain: this roster needs to change, and the Kings likely won’t have to wait long to see that change.

No stopping LeBron has 32 points in Lakers 103-99 two game sweep over Kings

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Saturday afternoon in Sacramento. The Kings and Lakers faced off in the second matchup in three days. The Kings lost the first game to the Lakers on Thursday, 113-100. On Saturday, the Kings lost to the Lakers, 103-99.

In the first quarter, the Lakers leaned heavily on the greatness of LeBron James. LeBron dominated in the paint and scored 12 points while helping build a lead for the Lakers. The Lakers outscored the Kings in the first quarter, 31-26, as they jumped out to an early lead against Sacramento. De’Aaron Fox did his best to keep the Kings close with nine first-quarter points of his own. Similarly to the first game of the set on Thursday, the Lakers’ physicality was proving too much for the Kings early on.

As the game progressed in the second quarter, the Kings seemed to get their legs under them a bit. The Lakers were still a lot to handle for the Kings, as LeBron James and Anthony Davis routinely got the Kings in rotation. D’Angelo Russell also put together a solid half of play as he hit his shots and played solid defense, sealing off the passing lanes.

However, the Kings outscored the Lakers in the second, 27-25, to shrink the lead to 56-53 going into halftime. De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 17 points in the first half, while LeBron James added 23.

In the third quarter, the game didn’t see much movement. The Kings and Lakers traded baskets as the Lakers extended the lead to 81-77 after three quarters of action. The Lakers outscored the Kings 25-24 in the third, as De’Aaron Fox and LeBron James continued to lead their teams with 26 and 25 points, respectively.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings were able to keep things close and give themselves a chance to win. Unfortunately for Kings fans, it was all for nothing as they couldn’t close out the game. The Lakers went on to beat the Kings, 103-99. The ending of the Kings’ game was a microcosm of the whole season. The Kings committed a careless foul by Malik Monk on Anthony Davis and failed to secure the rebound after a missed AD free throw, sealing their fate. It was a disappointing loss for the Kings, who have now lost three in a row.

After the game, the media heard from Mike Brown, Keegan Murray, and De’Aaron Fox. The sentiment was largely the same from all three: the Kings still did not do the little things needed to win the game. The free-throw box-out at the end of the game was highest on that list. The pressure is mounting in Sacramento—it’s palpable. If the results on the court don’t improve, it is almost certain that some roster moves will be made.

Up Next: The Kings stay home to take on the Indiana Pacers on Sunday at 3 PM PST inside Golden 1 Center. Tyrese Haliburton will be in town and is sure to be ready to show the Kings organization why they shouldn’t have traded him.

NBA Playoffs podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: Nuggets turn tables on Timberwolves game 5 tonight with series tied at 2-2 in Denver

On the NBA Playoffs podcast with Jerry F:

#1 The Denver Nuggets proved that they weren’t going anywhere anytime soon they were down to the Minnesota Timberwolves 0-2 but have come back to tie the series 2-2 with a huge win on Sunday 115-107.

#2 On Sunday Nikola Jokic scored 16 of 35 points in the fourth quarter and Aaron Gordon didn’t miss too much he was 11 for 12 with 27 points as the Nuggets were dominating on offense.

#3 Gordon was amazed by how the Nuggets regrouped and met the challenge of the Timberwolves on saying after the game, “It’s just like a laser-sharp focus,” and “and a surgical execution.”

#4 The Nuggets Jamal Murray fired off 12 of 19 shots in the third quarter. Murray had a buzzer beater to end game 3 on 117-90 on Friday night from half court.

#5 The Timberwolves who were up 2-0 now find their backs to the wall tied 2-2 in Denver for game 5 tonight at Ball Arena where the Nuggets could take the lead 3-2. Jerry how do you see tonight’s match up?

NBA Playoffs podcast with David Zizmor: Knicks could go up 2-0 at MSG tonight against Pacers

#1 The New York Knicks take a 1-0 series lead going into tonight’s game 2 against the Indiana Pacers. The officials from game 1 admitted they blew a kick ball violation. With the game tied 115-115 with 52 seconds left Aaron Nesmith looked like he knocked away a pass that Jalen Brunson threw to Donte DiVincenzo. The Pacers didn’t come up with the ball for a steal. Official Sean Wright ruled the ball hit off of Nesmith’s foot that allowed the Knicks to have possession.

#2 After the kick ball violation the Knicks took the lead 12 seconds later and never looked back and won it 121-117. The Knicks got scoring help from Jalen Brunson who led with 43 points and DiVincezo with 25 points.

#3 David, game 2 tonight at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks have the home floor again the Pacers hope to come out with some scoring from Myles Turner and Pascal Siakam to avoid going 0-2.

On the NBA Playoffs podcast with David Zizmor:

#1 To show you how good the Milwaukee Bucks are they went without  Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard down 1-3 against the Indiana Pacers in Milwaukee the Bucks persevered to move within a game of the Pacers in a 3-2 series with a 115-92 win.

#2 Antetokounmpo is suffering from a strained left calf and Lillard is out with an  Achilles tendon. Antetokounmpo has been taking some shots and Lillard has just rested.

#3 So it’s the Pacers up 3-2 they need one more win to advance the Bucks can tie up the series as this series moves to Indiana on Thursday May 2. Given the circumstances of Antetokoumpo and Lillard can the Bucks tie this one up?

Pacers Offensive Effort Spurs Win Over Golden State 123-111

The Golden State Warriors (36-32) had a lot of trouble containing the Indiana Pacers (39-31) Tyrese Haliburton as they dropped their Friday night game at Chase 123-111. Haliburton dropped two triples, one a buzzer-beater to end the second quarter and another buzzer-beater to end the third. The Pacers took off in the fourth quarter and there was no looking back for Indiana. The final was 123-111.

Game recap: At the end of the first quarter this game was tied up at 38. It was indeed a hotly contested quarter of basketball. The Warriors guard Stephen Curry had a great quarter finishing with 13 points and his first quarter play pointed to a hot night for the superstar.

Both teams were shooting at 50% from beyond the arc and both teams were protecting the ball with only three turnovers between the two teams. Both teams displayed some amazing defense as well as offense.

Several minutes into the second quarter the Warriors had created some separation leading 48-41. If the first quarter was any indication the Pacers would push any lead that Golden State took.

The Warriors came up with some solid defense and continued to push their lead. Mid-way through the quarter Golden State continued to hold onto a ten point lead 58-48 and their defense was really disrupting the Pacers offense.

The Warriors had established a 12 point lead that the Pacers erased in the final two minutes of the quarter. With a one-point lead 64-63 the Warriors were hanging on with under two minutes until the half.

The Warriors had pushed the lead out to 67-63 with seconds left in the first half of play. The Pacers were not done as Haliburton hit a three-point buzzer beater to end the half with Golden State leading 67-66. The Pacers had erased a 12 point Warrior lead and Golden State would have their work cut out for them in the second half of play.

Both Curry and Klay Thompson (off the bench) finished the first half with 15 points apiece. They were both on course for some great numbers. Golden State was controlling the pace but needed more stops.

Most of the stats for these two teams were as close as they could possibly be. The Warriors would try to continue to contain Haliburton in the second half. The Pacers had three of their starters in double digits with Pascal Siakim leading the pack scoring 13 points with Haliburton close behind with 11 points. The second half of the game would have all the makings of an intense battle between two playoff bound teams.

The tables turned in the third quarter as the Pacers took their largest lead of the game 77-72 at 7:23. The Warriors pushed back as they attempted to take back the momentum trailing by a single point 77-76.

Every time the Warriors challenged in the second half, the Pacers came right back and more often then not they came back with a triple. The Pacers had flipped this game by 22 points leading at 4:55, 89-79 in a strong Indiana turnaround.

The Warriors offense had slumped as the Pacers continued to extend their lead to 91-79 with under four minutes left in the quarter. Indiana came unleashed leading 100-85 with under a minutes left in the third as the Golden State offense continued to struggle.

The incomparable Haliburton ended the third quarter the way he ended the second; with a buzzer beating triple. Indiana had built a 102-88 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Warriors looked disconnected and you could see the frustration etched on Curry’s face as the fourth quarter got underway. The Warriors had to make a push now or never because the Pacers were not letting down, they refused to go away.

The Warriors were 15 of 41 from downtown and that makes winning awful tough. At 6:37 the Warriors were in the bonus and they had a real shot provided they got some offense going. The Pacers offense faltered and with the Warriors flying all over the court hitting shots, the door had opened up for Golden State.

They had cut the Pacer lead to 116-109 with 3:07 left in this wild game. The Warriors had to be near perfect for the remainder of the game. They were not. Golden State fought so hard in the final quarter but it was the horrendous third quarter that did them. The final was 123-111. To make this even worse Chris Paul got ejected near the end of the game in a case of clear frustration. The Pacers were now 5-0 at Chase.

The hot start for Curry cooled in the second half. He had 13 points in the first quarter but only 12 points for the remainder of the game. The Warriors were 14 of 46 from downtown and Golden State continues to struggle at home. Golden State will be on the road for seven of their next eight games. The good news is that they have been a lot better on the road this year than they have been at home.

Game notes: Friday night the Warriors lost the Pacers to Chase Center in an east meets west matchup. The Pacers are currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference and the Warriors are fighting to stay in playoff position hanging onto tenth place.

The Warriors ultimate goal is of course to move up in the standings. The Pacers are 43% three point shooters and Golden State needed solid defense to guard against that. It was very well hotly contested game but in the end the Warriors lost by 12 points. The Warriors have now lost five of their last ten games.

After this disappointing loss the Warriors head out on the road. Sunday the Warriors will take on the Minnesota Timberwolves looking for a more productive offensive effort. This will be another challenging game taking on the power house Timberwolves. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 4:00 PM.

Warriors bounce back rout Memphis Grizzlies 137-116; Curry scores his 300th 3 pointer in a season for the fifth time

The Golden State Warriors (36-32) welcomed the Memphis Grizzlies (23-47) to the Chase Center Wednesday night. Despite the absence of two crucial players, the Grizzlies’ superstar Ja Morant, who averages 25 points per game, and Marcus Smart, the team showed resilience but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors defeated the Grizzlies 137-116.

The Grizzlies still had players who could produce, counting on Gregory Jackson, Jaren Jackson, Jr., and Desmond Bane as the offensive weapons. The Warriors, still reeling from losing to the New York Knicks on Monday night, were eager to bounce back.

The Grizzlies, however, were to be considered. The teams engaged in a fast-paced first quarter, with the Grizzlies making seven three-point shots. Guard Stephen Curry of the Warriors also contributed with two threes, leading the Warriors 24-19. Curry achieved his 300th 3 pointer in a season for the fifth time in his career. The Grizzlies outscored the Warriors 12-8 in the closing minutes of the quarter to lead the Warriors 33-32.

In the second quarter, the game took an intense turn. Moses Moody’s three-pointer gave the Warriors a slight edge, but a scuffle between Draymond Green and Bane added a dramatic twist. Both players received technical fouls.

Jonathan Kuminga’s steal and dunk further fueled the Warriors’ momentum, leading to a 10-0 run and a halftime score of 68-58 in favor of the Warriors. Kuminga’s impressive performance, with 18 points, was a highlight of the quarter.

Kuminga led the Warriors with 18 points. The Grizzlies, led by Santi Aldama’s 21 points, Aldama made six threes. Memphis fought back with their three-point shooting, making 12 threes in 30 attempts.

The Warriors showcased their dominance at the start of the third quarter. Curry ignited the run with a three-pointer, marking his 300th three-point shot of the season, a testament to his exceptional career.

The Warriors maintained their momentum, completing a 31-3 run, including the last ten points scored in the first half, to lead 89-61. The Grizzlies’ offense, however, started to find its rhythm and made baskets. The Warriors won the quarter 40-32 and led by 18, 108-90.

Curry did not play in the fourth quarter. The Warrior’s second unit, led by Chris Paul, Klay Thompson, and Trayce Jackson-Davis, kept the pressure on the Grizzlies’ defense. The Warriors offense put 29 points on the board to record their highest point total in a game this year.

Game Notes—With the win, The Warriors are 36-32. They have 14 games left to play. The Warriors had a season-high 43 assists. Green (10 points and 12 rebounds), Chris Paul( 12 points and 14 assists), and Andrew Wiggins( 22 points, 10 rebounds) each had a double-double.

The Warriors’ offensive prowess was on full display, with seven players scoring in double figures. Kuminga led the team with 26 points, Thompson with 23, and Wiggins with 22. Despite not playing in the fourth quarter, Curry contributed 14 points. Jackson-Davis also made a significant impact with 13 points. Thompson’s five three-pointers were a testament to his shooting skills.

The Grizzlies Aldama and Gregory Jackson had career-highs in scoring. Alama torched the Warriors for 29 points. Aldama made seven threes. He had six in the first half and made just one in the second. Jackson also made seven threes and put 35 points on the board for Memphis.

Jaren Jackson posted 28 points. Jackson has been one tough customer for the Warriors to handle. Wednesday night was no exception. The only other Memphis player in double figures was Jake LaRavia with 12. The Grizzlies attempted 49 three-point shots. They made 18. The Warriors made 19 in 29 tries. 

The Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr had to be pleased with his teams’ performance Wednesday night. The Warriors must play their best basketball of the season. The way things stand now, the Warriors are in 10th place in the Western Conference. They would have to win two play-in games to make the playoffs and then face a team with a high seeding. 

The Warriors play the Indiana Pacers at the Chase Center on Friday night. The game will start at 7 pm.
