LAS VEGAS–The Las Vegas Aces (3-2) beat the Indiana Fever (2-3) in overtime 107-98 Tuesday night to punch their ticket to the WNBA Finals which will begin on Friday October 3rd. The Aces will be looking for their third title in four years.

Both teams fought tooth and nail in this gritty game by both teams. This had to be one of the toughest games Las Vegas has played all season and they won it together. The best news of all, the Aces will have home court advantage with the number one seeded Lynx losing their series.

Game recap: At the end of the first quarter this game was tied at 23. There were six ties in the opening quarter as this game see-sawed back and forth with the two teams trading leads.

The second quarter was also remarkable with more of the same, a hotly contested game. The Aces won the second quarter by the slimmest of points 24-22 taking a 47-45 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Aces were protecting the ball well with only five turnovers in the first half while the Fever was struggling with ten. Both A’Ja Wilson and Jackie Young were having outstanding games. The Aces biggest lead of the game in the first half was 5 points.

They would start the third quarter on a bit of a sour note however when Chelsea Gray suffered an injury that sent her off to the locker room for evaluation and treatment. It appeared that she had injured her foot and the team was waiting for more word.

As the third quarter wore on the Aces had taken their largest lead of the game 59-52 with 6:20 left on the clock. With just under six minutes left in the quarter Wilson and Young had each scored 18 points. Chelsea Gray had made her way back out to the bench and checked back into the game in obvious pain but determined to get back out on the floor.

With five minutes left in the third quarter the Fever suffered more woes. Aliyah Boston committed her fifth foul and Kelsey Mitchell went down with what seemed to be cramps. Mitchell’s knee had appeared to be giving her trouble in the later minutes of the quarter.

A gurney was actually rolled out on the court. Mitchell was finally able to get to her feet after what seemed like an eternity. She needed a lot of help getting back to the locker room and it was just another horrible blow for the Fever who had fought injury all season long.

She was unable to put weight on her left quad but was also having pain in her right knee, possible cramping. Despite the setbacks the Fever fought back pulling to within four points with a minute left in the quarter. After three quarters, the Aces had a 71-63 lead. It would all come down to the fourth quarter.

The Fever pulled to within five points of Las Vegas in the fourth quarter 73-68 but the Aces pushed their lead back out to 77-68 with 7:00 left in the game. With three minutes left in the game the Fever had fought to within two points 82-80.

When it looked like the Aces had this game in hand, the Fever came roaring back. With 52 seconds left in the game this matchup was tied at 84 and the Aces season was on the line. Both teams fought to the bitter end of regulation and with the score tied at 86 this game went into overtime.

Fever head coach Stephanie White got her team going right after the Mitchell injury. During a time-out she inspired her players to play for each other, and they sure answered the call. They played incredible final minutes of the fourth quarter and they were outstanding not only offensively but defensively.

The Aces scored the first points of the overtime taking a 92-89 lead. With under two minutes left in the game Las Vegas had a 97-93 lead. The Aces continued to push the lead taking a 99-93 lead with 1:09 left on the clock.

The Fever had refused to back off but they were running out of time; the Aces clearly showing their playoff experience and with the lead they could taste the win. Chelsea Gray and Jewell Loyd had scored the first 13 points in overtime.

With 22.6 left in the game, it was a one possession game with the Aces leading 101-98. This was still anyone’s game. The Aces put the finishing touches on this game taking a 105-98 lead with 12 seconds left on the clock.

A lot of credit goes to both of these teams putting on an electric show that went right down to the wire. Wilson finished with 35 points followed by Young who shot for 32. Despite her injury Gray had 17 points and the bench had a combined 18 points. It was an absolute team effort.

The Fever had six players in double digits. The high for Indiana was Odyssey Sims who finished with 27 points. Boston had a double double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Indiana fought hard from start to finish coming up nine points short.

Game notes: It all came down to the winner who goes to the WNBA final and the loser goes home and the Aces will be making that trip to the WNBA Finals with their win over the Phoenix Mercury.

Tuesday night the second-seeded Aces defeated the Fever and will make the trip to the WNBA finals. Wilson had an amazing game in their loss in game four finishing with 31 points and nine rebounds.

She got even more in game five leading with 35 points and the entire team really stepped up against a determined, skilled Indiana Fever on Tuesday night.

Game four was a close contest throughout the game with the Aces coming out on top 90-83 to tie up the series 2-2 last Sunday in Indianapolis.

The Las Vegas bench featuring Jewell Lloyd and Dana Evans contributed big with Lloyd scoring eight points and Evans with five. Everything was on the line Tuesday night and the Aces pulled it off and advance now to the WNBA Finals..

Friday night Oct 3 the WNBA finals will get underway with the Las Vegas Aces taking on the Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury had won their semi-final series beating the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx last Sunday 3-1.

With the Lynx losing the series, the second-seeded Aces will start this series in game 1 at their home court Michelob ULTRA Arena. Tipoff for this game is scheduled at 5:00 PM.

Aces Tie Up Series Winning Game Two Beating Fever 90-68

LAS VEGAS–The Las Vegas Aces (1-1) played a spectacular game Tuesday night beating the Indiana Fever (1-1) 90-68. Tonight’s game was a complete contrast to the game they played Sunday night. They controlled the pace of the game and they continued to extend their lead with each quarter busting the game wide open in the fourth quarter.

A’Ja Wilson was back in form hitting 25 points, nine rebounds with five steals. Nalyssa Smith finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. They held Indiana to 40% shooting in this game. They were spotless.

Game recap: What a difference a day makes as Las Vegas took command of this game winning the opening quarter 26-17. The Fever fought back going on a 8-0 run in the second quarter but Las Vegas continued to lead going into halftime leading 46-35.

Wilson was much more efficient in this game. The Aces were really spreading the floor, staying focused in this hotly contested matchup. The Fever’s Lexie Hull and Kelsey Mitchell both had double digits in the first half.

Wilson finished the first half with 15 points, Jackie Young and Nalyssa Smith had ten points apiece. They led at the half 46-35 and they would have to keep dictating the pace throughout the second half.

The Aces were piling up the personal fouls though, Young with three, Nalyssa Smith with four and Chelsea Gray with two. This was something they had to clean up in the second half. They had as much as an 18 point lead in the first half.

The Aces began to extend their lead after the Fever had cut the Las Vegas lead to single digits. Mid-Way through the third quarter, the Aces had taken a 59-44 lead going on a 7-0 run. The contrast between Sunday’s game and Tuesday night’s was vast and that was apparent on the scoreboard.

Their defense was a huge part of their success tonight. The Aces had really shown up for Tuesday night’s game. Through three quarters the Aces were shooting at 60% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.

The Fever were 35% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc, quite a disparity. Pinpoint passes, offensive excellence and some great defense gave the Aces their largest lead of the game with 1:00 left in the third 69-47. After three full quarters the Aces had a 70-52 lead.

The entire team had to step up in this game and they sure answered the call. They did not want to have to go to Indiana trailing by two games. They would have to continue to control the pace and disrupt the Fever’s rhythm for one more quarter to close out this game.

The Aces broke this game wide open at 6:55 in the fourth quarter taking a 80-56 lead. Indiana continued to shoot poorly and their turnovers were really hurting them committing 22 conceding 28 points off those turnovers.

Indiana only had six points off their bench while the Aces had 24 points. Las Vegas played the kind of game we are used to seeing them play. They were spot-on.

Game notes: After playing a lack luster game one, Aces tied up their series with the Fever with a win in game two. In game one Sunday night the Aces were outplayed from the field, from beyond the arc and defensively.

Wilson had not only a slow start but only scored four points in the third quarter missing four shots. She really struggled in the fourth quarter only taking one shot that missed and coming away empty in the entire quarter in the 89-73 loss.

The Fever outscored the Aces in all four quarters keeping Las Vegas from making any kind of comeback. Indiana was able to contain WIlson only allowing her to score 16 points but she did have a double double with 13 rebounds. The Fever controlled the pace of the game throughout and the Aces were able to reverse that trend and take control of game two from the start.

The two teams will now head back to Indiana enjoying a few days off before they play game three on Friday night with tip-off scheduled for 4:30 PM. While the perfect scenario for the Aces would be to finish the series in Indiana with wins in games 3 and 4. The Aces are looking to take at least one game.

Las Vegas would play the fifth game of the series should that happen on Sep 30th in Vegas. The team needs to bring the same energy into the next two games and they could very well finish this series sooner rather than later.

Aces Outplayed by Fever – Lose At Home 89-73 In Shocker

The Las Vegas Aces (0-1) never really got started in their matchup with the Indiana Fever (1-0). losing 89-73. They trailed for the entire second half and the Fever really put the stops on A’Ja Wilson who finished the game with 16 points.

The good news is that we have seen Wilson came away with a low-scoring game only to be followed up by some amazing numbers. There is little doubt that the Aces will come back on Tuesday night in game two with an entirely re-worked mindset.

Game recap: The Fever came out hot, the Aces not so much in fact it was a bit of a dismal start. They were missing a lot of shots around the rim and just did not look sharp to start this game. They were trailing 19-10 with under three minutes left in the first ten minutes of play.

It was a troubling start for Las Vegas. With under a minute left in the first quarter something within the Aces began to turn around as they started to chip away at the Fever’s lead. The Aces went on an 8-0 run and as the clock expired the Fever were clinging onto a one-point lead 19-18.

After such an awful start the Las Vegas Aces would be looking to start the second quarter in the same way they finished the first quarter. In the early moments of the second quarter the Aces took their first lead of the game 21-19.

The bad news for the Fever was the second foul on Aliyah Boston. Mid-way through the second quarter this game was tied at 25. The Aces were protecting the ball well with only three turnovers but they continued to miss too many shots around the rim.

Neither team was doing a whole lot from beyond the arc but what the Fever had going for them was a better shooting percentage from the field. The final seconds of the first half saw the Aces self-destruct with turnovers and fouls falling behind 41-36. The Fever had outscored the Aces 22-18 in the second quarter.

The third quarter went from bad to worse as the Fever continued to push their lead and mid-way through the quarter had taken a 57-45 lead. Indiana had come into this game with the perfect game plan part of which was.putting the stops on Wilson.

They had also shut down Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray. The Fever had owned the 50/50 ball. Jewell Loyd had been on the floor for 17 minutes without a single point. The Aces got as close as three points 58-55 at 2:51 but the Fever pushed right back taking a 69-55 lead as the quarter came to an end.

It got even more precarious with Wilson committing four personal fouls. The Aces got close at times throughout the game but just could not push the game over the top and take control of the pace of the game.

Las Vegas had been unable to contain Kelsey Mitchell who had the game high 31 points with six minutes left in the game. Wilson had a double double with 13 rebounds but only 16 points. Losing at home was not something that the Aces wanted to entertain.

More than anything, the Aces needed stops with 4:20 left in the game and trailing 82-69. Wilson had only hit one field goal in the entire second half. Las Vegas needed to make stops and of course the Fever began to bleed the clock with two minutes left in the game.

This game was all but done and Las Vegas had lost at home. The road forward would be a tough one but if there is any team in the WNBA that could pull it out, all bets are on the Los Vegas Aces. The final was 89-73 in a heart-breaking loss.

Jackie Young finished the game with 16 points and Wilson had yet another double double with 13 rebounds and 16 points. Chelsea Gray chipped in 13 points and Dana Evans had a great game off the bench with 14 points.

The Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell had the game high with 34 points. Odyssey Sims finished with 17 points and Natasha Howard had a double double with 11 rebounds and 12 points.

Game notes: After beating the Seattle Storm in game three of their series by a single point 74-73 the Las Vegas Aces lost to the Indiana Fever in the first game of the semi-finals Sunday afternoon. The Aces are the second seed and started the series on their home court Michelob ULTRA Arena.

After an outstanding game three in their last series Wilson scored 38 points and the Fever defended her well enough to limit scoring to 16 a big difference from game 3 vs. Seattle. Jewell Lloyd had a quite game with 3 points.

The Aces know what each of them are capable of and they really needed them in this game. This was true test for the Aces as they take on the best of the best only to lose by 16 points on their home floor.

The Las Vegas Aces now have their work cut out for them as they return to Michelob ULTRA Arena on Tuesday to host Indiana in game two. They can beat the tough teams as evidenced by their 17 straight winning streak to finish the season.

They will have to put an improved game plan into action on Tuesday and there is little doubt that the Aces will see a different team on the court.

The Fever are a group of fighters that play for their fans, fight for each other and fight for themselves. The Aces will have their hands full on Tuesday night in Vegas for game 2. Tip-off for this game is scheduled for 6:30 PM and be seen on ESPN.

Aces Edge Storm To Win Series 74-73; Indiana up next round on Sunday

LAS VEGAS–This game was not decided until the final seconds of the game as the Las Vegas Aces( 2-1) beat the Seattle Storm (1-2) 74-73 winning the series and moving on to the semifinals where they will meet the Indiana Fever on Sunday.

This game went right down to the wire with the Aces coming out on top. A’Ja Wilson just kept on doing her thing which is always extraordinary. She finished the game with 38 points carrying the team on her back. She got great support from Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray.

Game recap: The Storm had the lead after the first ten minutes of play 19-14 and as the second quarter got underway the Aces surged taking the quarter 19-7 and leading at the half 33-26. They would be looking to take that momentum into the second half.

The Storm refused to fold outscoring the Aces in the third quarter 22-19 and pulling to within four points 48-52. It would turn out to be a barn-burner of a fourth quarter.

The Aces continued to hold onto the lead but could not put much distance between themselves and the Storm. Seattle continued to hang around. With under seven minutes left in the game it was a one-point differential 58-57 with Las Vegas clinging to the lead.

The Aces pushed their lead back out to 66-61 with under three minutes left in the game. With under two minutes left in the game it was all tied up at 68 as the Storm continued to punch back refusing to throw in the towel.

The last two minutes in the game were not designed for the weak-of-heart. Both teams dug deep with the Storm taking the lead 71-70 with 1:14 left on the clock. At 1:03 Las Vegas took back the lead 72-71 but this game was far from over.

The Storm’s Erica Wheeler gave her team the lead back 73-72 with 19.3 left in this game. Wilson missed a jump shot that was rebounded by Young who tipped the shot in for a 74-73 lead. With 12.4 on the clock, the Aces did a bang-up job on defense in the final seconds forcing a missed shot from Erica Wheeler and that was the ball game. The Las Vegas Aces had won the game 74-73 and the series moving onto the next round.

Nneka Ogwumike had the high for the Storm with 16 points and Skylar Diggins had 13 points. Off the bench Wheeler was magnificent with 16 points putting her team in a great position to win this game. She ironically hit the shot in the closing minutes that gave the Storm the lead but she also missed the shot at the very end of the game as the clock ran out.

Wilson had an amazing showing scoring 38 points and Young hit 14 points with Chelsea Gray scoring 12 points. Jewell Loyd had four points and Dana Evans only two, a quiet night for both of them.

Game notes: Thursday night the Aces beat the Storm in game 3 of their series to advance to round 2 of the WNBA playoffs. After splitting the series the Aces they win game 3 at Michelob ULTRA Arena moving on to the semifinals.

Tuesday night the Aces had a 79-70 lead with four minutes left in the game. Everything indicated an Aces win but fouls, turnovers and missed shots let Seattle back in the game and they took full advantage scoring 16 points in the final minutes while the Aces were stuffed only scoring four points.

Now Las Vegas won the winner-take-all game. The good news for the Aces is that with the 2nd seed they had home court advantage. A’Ja Wilson has said “home crowds are always like your sixth man,” and the Aces will really need them Thursday night.

The way they fell off to close out the game Tuesday was very unlike the Aces who typically finish strong. Neither team has roster player injuries and it was a hotly contested game. The Las Vegas loss broke the teams 17 straight win streak and they got back on the winning track.

An eventual loss was a possibility but it was painful nonetheless. The Las Vegas collapse in the final four minutes was something they had not seen in their past 17 games. The loss got the Aces back on track and even more determined as they advanced in the playoffs.

The Aces will broiught their “A game”; they knew what they had to do to win this game. The sell-out crowd was their ally from start to finish as they strived to move onto the next round.

The Las Vegas Aces will now move on to the semifinals for a matchup with the Indiana Fever. The Fever upset the Atlanta Dream Thursday night 87-85 to move onto the next round. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for Sunday September 21 at 12:00PM. The second seeded Aces will meet the Fever at Michelob ULTRA Arena for game one of this series.

Playoff Intensity: Valkyries Outlast The Fever 75-63 In A Defensive Struggle

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Remember when the Valkyries seemed like they were biting off more than they could chew shooting 3-pointers? Well, if you do, then you probably remember when the Valkyries resembled a first-year expansion team as well.

It’s been a while.

These days, the violet-and-black look like a well-oiled machine in regards to how they play, and win games. Simply, their defense is that good: it allows a squad that’s suffered numerous personnel changes, and misses more shots than they make to be a consistent threat to their more established opponents. The Fever, on Sunday night again without Caitlin Clark, know better than anyone.

The Valkyries started hot, making nine of their first 10 threes, and building a lead that briefly hit 20 points in the second quarter. From there, Indy’s defense and competitiveness showed, but not enough to keep the hosts from holding on for a 75-63 win at Chase Center.

The win gave the Valkyries a 3-0 sweep of the Fever, and more importantly, a half-game lead in the playoff hierarchy that has Golden State currently in seventh place.

Afterwards, coach Stephanie White was left to explain the hosts hot start that came after a 10-minute break three minutes into the game due to several equipment malfunctions inside the arena. The hosts caught fire after the unexpected pause in a stretch that essentially decided the game.

“They’re really good at spacing the floor,” White said. “Their passes are on time and on target, so you can’t make a lot of defensive mistakes. And I felt like we overhelped. We were trying to not allow catch-and-shoot threes. We didn’t want to overhelp on drivers. We overhelped. We over-rotated. The timing on the rotation wasn’t very good, and we gave them wide-open catch-and-shoot threes, and they are a really good team when they can get that.”

White’s description mirrored the league stats that show that the Valkyries lead the WNBA with just under 10 made threes a game. But they don’t shoot a high percentage from three, and they’re dead last in overall shooting percentage.

But… Iliana Rupert is the WNBA’s most consistent 3-point shooter at better than 46 percent. Cecilia Zandalasini, who was again unavailable due to injury, is fourth at better than 44 percent. Leaving those two open is a mistake, and an open door for the Valkyries to go on an extended scoring run.

Against the Fever, Rupert started 4 for 4 and finished 5 for 8 from distance. After Rupert’s third make, the Valkyries led 22-9. Meanwhile, the visitors, again without Clark, were in a stretch of 15 missed threes in 18 attempts that proved how shrewd Golden State’s strategy of packing the paint was.

The Fever got within six points in far more competitive second half, but couldn’t get any closer. Kate Martin came up with a critical three after the Valkyries went scoreless for almost all of the first three minutes of the fourth quarter. A flagrant foul on Aerial Powers for not allowing Martin landing space gave Martin a free throw as well and the lead grew to 59-50.

Rupert led Golden State with 21 points. Janelle Salaun and Martin both added 10. Powers led Indiana with 17 points off the bench, but was 1 for 5 from distance.

The Valkyries final home stand continues on Tuesday against the New York Liberty.

Aces Put An End To Losing Streak Beating Indiana Fever 89-81

The Las Vegas Aces put an end to their three-game losing streak beating the Indiana Fever 89-81 Sunday. They trailed for three quarters but powered through the fourth quarter. After being shut down in the first half, A’Ja Wilson scored 20 points in the second half and finishing with 24 points. It was an amazing comeback as the Aces begin to chip away at the standings now tied for seventh place. This was the Aces 16th straight win over the Fever.

Game recap: The Aces got an early 6-2 lead but the Fever responded taking as much as a five point lead. The two teams fought hard for the rest of the quarter and after the first ten minutes of play, the Fever had a one-point lead 21-20 in a hotly contested game.

Chelsea Gray hit a buzzer beater for two points to end the quarter. The Fever’s Aliyah Boston had already shot for ten points and the Aces would need to contain her going into the second quarter. A’Ja Wilson had a slow start only hitting a single basket but had three rebounds. The Fever were doing a great job shutting her down. Gray had the high for Las Vegas with five points.

In the early minutes of the second quarter the Fever extended their lead to 26-22. The Aces answered with a Dana Evans shot from downtown to tie up the game 28-28 at 6:19. Caitlin Clark had scored only two points but she had eight assists connecting with Aliyah Boston numerous times.

The Fever were making life pretty miserable for A’Ja Wilson keeping her pretty locked down. Indiana went on a run extending their lead to 37-28 prompting Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon to call a timeout before the game got out of hand.

A’Ja Wilson finally got her second basket of the game but Clark came right back shooting over the defense for her first three of the game and the Fever had taken a 40-30 lead. The Aces were struggling from the floor shooting for only 36% while the Fever were hot shooting at 54%.

Las Vegas continued to struggle on the floor trailing at the half 36-42. They would have a lot of work to do in the second half. They needed to find a way to disrupt the Clark-Boston connection which was a huge part of the Fever’s lead.

The Fever’s Aliyah Boston had the game high at the half with 18 points. The Aces struggles on the floor resulted in not a single player in double digits at halftime. The Fever had held Wilson to 1-12 field goals.

The last time the Fever had beaten the Aces was back in 2019. If the first half was any indication, Las Vegas was going to have to step up big time in the second half. It was not a huge point deficit by any means but they had to find a way to shut down Boston and start hitting those floor shots that they had been missing in the first half.

The Aces continued to trail in the third quarter, struggling from the floor, missing open shots while the Fever’s Aliyah Boston continued to dominate. With 4:09 left in the quarter Boston had hit 22 points.

The Aces continued to trail by six points throughout most of the third quarter. With 2.22 left on the clock, the Aces pulled to within four points but the Fever countered with a two point play and going into the fourth quarter the Fever were holding onto a 61-58 lead.

The final quarter got underway with the Aces pulling to within a single point 60-61. Las Vegas took the lead 63-61 for the first time since the first quarter when Aaliyah Nye hit a three. Nye had 11 points off the bench and Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Jewell Loyd and Jackie Young had all reached double digits.

With 7:58 left in the game the Aces were clinging to a 65-63 lead and desperately needing stops. Las Vegas got a couple of stops and made good on them pushing their lead out to 69-63 going on a 15-2 run with 6:16 left on the clock.

The Fever gobbled up the Las Vegas lead and with five minutes left in the game it was all tied up at 69. A crucial coaches challenge was won by the Aces and with under two minutes left in the game Las Vegas had a 83-75 lead.

A’Ja Wilson had hit 16 points in the second half making good on her claim at the half that she would “just keep on shooting.” With under a minute Las Vegas had established an 84-79 lead and this game was going down to the wire.

A second challenge in as many minutes was also won by the Aces and Jackie Young hit a couple of free throws giving Las Vegas an 86-81 lead with 40 ticks left on the clock. The final was 89-81.

If a team can stay close and close out the fourth quarter chances are pretty good that they will come away with a win and is exactly what Las Vegas pulled off. They had put a stop to their losing streak, and now had 6-7 season record.

Indiana’s Aliyah Boston had the game high with 26 points and 10 rebounds along with a great showing by Kelsey Mitchell with 20 and Clark finishing with 19 points and 11 assists.

The Aces really bounced back in this game finishing off the Fever in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. After a rough start, A’Ja Wilson finished with 24 points and seven rebounds. Jackie Young had 19 points and also had seven rebounds. Chelsea Gray and Jewell Loyd had a great finish; Gray with 18 points and Loyd with ten. Aaliyah Nye had 11 points off the bench.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the Aces played another home game at Michelob ULTRA Arena taking on the Fever. The Aces came into the game after a loss to the Seattle Storm 90-83 after leading by ten points in the third quarter last Friday. That game was A’Ja Wilson’s first appearance on the court after being out on concussion protocol.

Wilson came back into this game sharp after her first game back last Friday night. Las Vegas faced Caitlan Clark but also the Clark- Aliyah Boston combination a dangerous duo. The Arena was packed with over 18,500 fans on hand for the game with the Ace ending their three game losing streak.

Las Vegas will back on the court at Michelob ULTRA Arena welcoming the Connecticut Sun next Wednesday night. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:00 PM and fans can tune in for all the action on NBA TV.

Valkyries found Remedy for Fever win 88-77; get back on the winning track

Indiana Fever center Caitlin Clark drives to the basket past the Golden State Valkyrie defense in the second quarter in WNBA action at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Thu Jun 19, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Michael Roberson

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Golden State Valkyries (6-6) fought off the Indiana Fever (6-6) 88-77, in front of another sellout Bay Area crowd.

Although Indiana made the first bucket of the game, Golden State went on a 7-0 run, to take their largest lead in the first half, The Fever had their own big run of 14-0, and led by as many as 10 points.

After the first ten minutes of play, the visitors from the Hoosier State led by nine, 21-12. The first quarter had two lead changes and zero ties. The Valkyries took their first punch, and managed to stay within a reasonable competitive distance.

However, the Fever increased their advantage to as high as 12 before recess. Golden State continued to fight back, and got the deficit below double-digits, 44-36. Caitlin Clark was scoreless until around the 4:00 mark, when she converted a layup. Although she had six assists to her credit.

Aliyah Boston was the only player on both sides to reach the 10+ points plateau, with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Valkyries shot 35% from the field, while the Fever were at a heated 49%, matching their nickname. Neither team shot extraordinarily well from beyond the arc.

In the second half, the Fever posted their largest margin of 13 points, but the Valkyries continued to battle back, outscoring the Fever in consecutive quarters. By the end of the third stanza, Golden State narrowed the margin to four points, 59-54.

In the Final quadrant, the Valkyries managed to overtake the Fever around the 8:00 segment (62-61), at the hands of a Tiffany Hayes bucket. Once they put themselves in front of the Fever, they had to stave them off for nearly 80% of the last quarter.

Despite Indiana’s valiant attempts to regain the lead, Golden State forged the lead up to 11 points. That was also the lead they had at the final horn, 88-77. A raucous crowd was more than excited with the home team’s fight and resilience.

Golden State had five players in double-figures, led by Kayla Thompson (16), Tiffany Hayes (14), Chloe Bibby (12) and Laeticia Amihere with ten points.

Indian produced four players with that scenario. Aliyah Boston topped her team with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Mitchell (16), Natosha Howard (13) and Clark nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

The Valkyries are next in action Sunday, June 22, as they host the Connecticut Sun at 5:30 PM PT, while the Fever head down to Las Vegas to take on the Aces, the same date, but at Noon PT.

The Las Vegas Aces (25-13) won their third game in a row beating the Connecticut Sun (27-11) 84-71. This was a win that A’Ja Wilson will never forget. This game will hold a very special memory for the rest of her life. She hit her 1000th season point Saturday, the first player to ever do it in a single season.

She has played her heart out all season through the ups the downs and they are cresting right now as they head closer to the playoffs. Wilson finished this historic game with 29 points and nine rebounds.

Game recap: The Connecticut Sun are holding down third place in the WNBA right now and going into this game, every team in the league is playing tough ball and the Sun will be a challenge.

There are no “gimmes” in women’s basketball right now. There are the teams that can only aspire to playing the spoiler and there are the team’s that are headed for the playoffs. The Aces and the Sun are both headed to the playoffs; the Sun in third place and the Aces in fourth with two games left on the regular season.

The Las Vegas Aces, who have won seven of their last eight games, took a 29-25 lead after the first ten minutes of play. They were leading at the half 48-40. Las Vegas had an amazing third quarter outscoring the Sun 23-11 taking a 20 point lead 71-51.

Connecticut played hard in the fourth quarter outscoring the Aces 20-13 making up some ground but it was not enough to overcome the lead that the Aces had built. Las Vegas won a tough game against the Connecticut Sun 84-71.

Fans enjoyed the game and seeing the team win but there was a special moment in the final two minutes of the game that sent the arena into a wild frenzy. At exactly 1:57 left in the game, Wilson made an 11-foot pullup shot assisted by Jackie Young for her 1,000th pt in a single season.

30 seconds after the shot the Aces called a timeout as her teammates mobbed her. She took the court acknowledging the loud ovation from the fans clapping her hands with tears in her eyes.

Right now the Aces hold a one-game lead over the Seattle Storm for the No. 4th seed in the playoffs as well as home-court advantage in that series.

Marina Mabrey led the Suns with 18 points and Brionna Jones added 17 points. For the Aces Kelsey Plum finished with 14 points. She hit a late much needed three to seal this win for Las Vegas. She came through in much the same way in their last game with the Fever.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon Michelob ULTRA Arena was bursting at the seams with fans not only anticipating another win but hoping to witness an unparalleled milestone. The sell-out crowd was there of course to root the Aces on but to also be in person for the 1000th point hit by the amazing Aces leader A’Ja Wilson.

She has thrilled fans for years now and this year could possibly be her best yet. With two games left in the season, Sunday’s game was the second to last regular season game played at Michelob. They will finish the season next Thursday taking on the Dallas Wings at home.

Tuesday night the Aces take on the Seattle Storm on the road and finish the season back home playing the Dallas Wings Thursday. Tipoff for Tuesday night’s game is scheduled for 7:00 PM and can be viewed on NBA TV.

The second game of the two game series between the Las Vegas Aces (24-13) and the Indiana Fever (19-19) was a hotly contested game with Las Vegas coming out on top 78-74. Chelsea Gray had the team high with a high-powered effort scoring 21 points.

The Fever were able to tie the game in the second half but that was as close as Indiana would get. A’Ja Wilson had another double double scoring 15 points and had 17 rebounds. The Fever have not beaten Las Vegas in the past five years.

Game recap: The Aces had a great start leading after the first ten minutes 19-13. After the first quarter, the Fever’s Caitlan Clark already had two personals in this very competitive game.

Mid-way through the second quarter the Fever rallied after trailing by as many as eight points. With under four minutes left in the half the Aces had established a 35-27 lead. Every time the Fever challenged, the Aces had the answer pushing back the lead.

Both Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum had a great start in this game. Las Vegas continued to fight hard but the feisty Fever continued to hang around. At the half, the Aces continued to maintain the lead 43-35.

Clark had to exit the second quarter after committing her third foul. In the quarter she set the record for the most assists in a season as she continues to set milestones. The Aces Wilson and Plum each had ten points and Young chipped in seven points. Wilson already had eight rebounds on her way to another double double.

This game began to really heat up in the third quarter with both teams trading shots. Mid-way through the quarter the Aces continued to lead 56-46 in a fast paced game. Wilson had a double double in the quarter and four Ace starters had double digits.

With two minutes left in the quarter the Fever had pulled to within four shots 52-56. Las Vegas had to tighten up and start hitting shots. In the final minute of play, the Fever had pulled to within one point 57-58.

After three quarters Las Vegas was hanging onto a slim 60-57 lead. Clark had 14 points in the third quarter a huge reason for the Fever’s comeback. Indiana won the third quarter 22-17.

With 8:27 left in this game it was all knotted up 60-60. Indiana had held the Aces to 17 points in the third quarter. Plum hit a much needed three her third of the game in the fourth quarter giving the Aces a 65-60 lead.

This game would come down to a wild finish. The Fever were only shooting at 43 % from the line and in a game so hotly contested this could be the difference between a win and a loss. So far shots from the line were undoing the Fever’s efforts.

Clark was called for her fourth foul with three minutes left in the game. With under three minutes in the game the Fever had pulled to within three points until Wilson, who gets to the line more than anyone else in the league, hit a couple of free throws.

Indiana fouled Wilson again on their next possession good for another two points. With under two minutes left on the clock, it was again a two-point game. With under a minute Plum hit her fourth three giving Las Vegas a 75-70 lead in a thriller.

The Fever pulled within three points with 42.1 seconds left in the game 75-72. With 23 seconds on the clock Indiana had the ball and the opportunity to tie up this game. Aliyah Boston shot at an open three and missed.

The Fever went on to foul Gray who made both free throws followed by a second foul on Gray to end the game with Las Vegas hanging onto the game 78-74.

Las Vegas played consistently throughout the entirety of the game. The Fever threatened throughout every quarter. It was all Kelsey Mitchell in the first half for the Fever and in the second half it was all Clark but they came up just short.

The Aces were far more consistent at the line than the Fever and one of the reasons that Indiana lost this game. The amazing play of Gray turned this game around as well. She had the team high with 21 points. Plum finished with 18 points and four shots from downtown. In was an all-out effort for the Aces in a well played game.

Game notes: In a Friday night special, the Aces took on a second game against the Fever. Wednesday night, the Aces beat the Fever in a competitive game 86-75 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Friday night’s was played at the same location in Indianapolis.

The Aces had beaten the Fever for the 14th straight time Wednesday and for the 15th time at the Fever’s site Friday night. There has been a lot of discord among Fever fans but Friday night was a clean game that played out.

After losing in the first game of the two game series, the Fever no doubt came out with renewed energy. Las Vegas had their starters take control of this game from the get go. Aces superstar A’Ja Wilson (15 pts) Jackie Young (12 pts) and Kelsey Plum (18 pts).

Las Vegas will be back home at Michelob ULTRA Arena taking on the Connecticut Sun this Sunday. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 3:00 PM PT.

With A’Ja Wilson back on the court the Las Vegas Aces (22-13) had the resources needed to beat a tough Indiana Fever team(19-17) 86-75 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. This is the first of two games with the Fever, the second to be played Friday night also in Indiana. Wilson finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds for a double double despite not being at 100 percent.

It is no secret how well the Indiana Fever have been playing and this will really test the Aces. Caitlin Clark has been playing some really nice ball averaging over 19 points a game. Las Vegas will have to contain her which will be the key to a win over the Fever.

The game was close in the opening quarter and the Aces took a slim 20-18 lead. Las Vegas began to distance themselves in the second quarter leading 30-23 mid-way through the quarter at 5:34. With under a minute left in the half, the Aces had established a 41-32 lead.

At the half, Wilson had scored 12 points with eight rebounds. Alysha Clark and Tiffany Hayes were having a great game off the bench each with nine points in the first half. Both Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young had really slow starts. Young only had two points in the first two quarters and Plum had a single point.

Caitlan Clark had eight points and the high score in the half for Indiana was Kelsey Mitchell with 11 points. There was some star power in attendance with country super-star Darius Rucker taking in the game.

Tyrese Halliburton and Myles Turner were also on hand. Women’s basketball has taken the country by storm and we see celebs across the country supporting this exciting sport that attracts more and more followers with every season. Wednesday night’s game was the 14th sellout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse this season.

The Fever came into the third quarter with renewed effort and trailed by a single point mid-way through the quarter 48-49. Las Vegas would push the lead back out leading after three quarters 64-57. This had been an extremely long quarter with the refs going to replay three times in the quarter in fact Las Vegas head coach Becky Hammon was called for a technical for arguing with the officials.

The Fever threatened to rally numerous times in the fourth quarter but Las Vegas continued to push the lead back. Indiana was going nowhere and they were playing hard and pulling to within six points at 6:48 72-66.

With the Aces leading 80-73 and 3:20 left on the clock, this game was hardly over. Las Vegas hung in the game and when the dust had settled, the Aces had beaten Indiana by the score of 86-75.

It was a terrific effort from Wilson with 27 points and 12 rebounds for yet another double double and not being at 100 percent. With a day off Thursday the hopes are that she will continue to completely heal heading into the playoffs.

Chelsea Gray finished with 11 points. The Aces had some great work off the bench with Clark scoring 14 points and Hayes with 12. Plum came around in the second half finishing with nine points. They had held Clark to 16 point in this game.

Game notes: Wednesday night the Aces took on the Fever in the first of two back-to-back games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Sunday, the Aces lost a close game to the New York Liberty coming up just short 75-71without their “Ace” A’Ja Wilson who missed the game with an ankle injury.

Wilson had not missed a game in years and while she is not at 100 percent the hopes are that she will be as close as possible going into the playoffs. She did wear a boot on the sidelines on Sunday but her MRI came back clean, great news, and this was just a precaution. It will be good to see her back on the court.

Friday night the Aces will play the Fever one more time with tipoff scheduled for 4:30 PM PT. This first game was very close throughout until the final minutes. Game two could prove to be even tougher.
