Kurtz Walks It Off Again as A’s Beat Astros 6-4 in Extras

WEST SACRAMENTO–After dropping the middle two games of their four-game series with the Astros, the A’s looked to salvage a split with a win on Thursday night at Sutter Health Park. In what’s becoming a familiar storyline, Nick Kurtz played hero once again, launching a two-run home run in the tenth inning to walk off the Astros as the A’s won 6-4.

It’s impossible to understate the impact Kurtz is having on the Athletics right now. Thursday marked the fourth time in five games that he’s delivered a late-inning home run. He’s everything you want in the clutch, and his approach at the plate seems to be catching up to his immense talent. His walk-off blast traveled 416 feet to dead center field and left the bat at 105.6 mph. Facing Josh Hader with a 2-1 count, Kurtz crushed a middle-middle sinker for a no-doubt shot.

The A’s were only in position for that moment thanks to a strong outing from their starter.

Jacob Lopez turned in a fantastic performance, tossing six innings of one-run, four-hit baseball while striking out five. Lopez’s biggest moment came in the sixth, when he worked out of a bases-loaded jam by striking out the final two batters of the inning. He walked off the mound fired up with the 2-1 lead still intact.

The bullpen had mixed results. J.T. Ginn relieved Lopez and fired a scoreless seventh but ran into trouble in the eighth. After recording two outs, Ginn issued a walk and gave up a single, prompting Mark Kotsay to call on Mason Miller for a four-out save. But on Miller’s first pitch—a fastball over the heart of the plate—Victor Caratini crushed a three-run homer to tie the game at 4-4. It was Caratini’s second three-run shot in as many nights. Ginn’s final line was 1.2 innings, two runs on two hits.

Miller bounced back to record the final out of the eighth and followed it with a scoreless ninth, finishing with 1.1 innings pitched, one run, and two hits.

The A’s couldn’t push across a run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extras. After holding the Astros scoreless in the top of the 10th, Kurtz delivered the decisive blow in the bottom half.

With the win, the A’s improved to 31-46 and will welcome the Guardians to town for a three-game series beginning Friday night. Jeffrey Springs (5-5, 4.52 ERA) will get the start for the A’s against Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee (4-6, 3.79 ERA).

1.After getting swept in their last series by the Angels the A’s turned things around sweeping the Kansas City Royals over the weekend. Both the Angels and the Royals have similar records but the A’s were able to handle them winning Sunday’s game after trailing 2-0 going into the sixth inning.

2.Going into Sunday’s game the A’s were assured a series win win or lose but they fought back in the sixth inning to tie up the game. Each team finished the game with nine hits but it was the long ball that won this game for the Athletics.

3.Jacob Wilson continues to contribute in every game along with Lawrence Butler, and also got some hits from Denzel Clark, Luis Urias and Brent Rooker.

4.Jeffrey Springs and went six innings allowing the two runs but it was the relief pitching that earned the win for the Athletics.

5.The next series for the A’s will be the Houston Astros in Sacramento Monday night. The series gets underway today -a four game series with the division leaders. This will be a tough series for the team with Mitch Spence on the mound for the A’s. The Astros will start Lance McCullers Jr. How can the A’s handle the Astros.

6. The A’s will be holding a ceremonial groundbreaking on Mon Jun 23 at the old Tropicana Site in Las Vegas announcing they will have shovels in the ground. Actually team president Mark Badain said they’ve already started construction for the Vegas ballpark the big question that will asked did the A’s come up wit h the $1.75 billion for their share of the constructions costs?

Kurtz Crush Caps Comeback as A’s Edge Royals 3-2 in Thriller

A rough couple of months got a rare highlight Sunday afternoon, as the Athletics rallied late and held on for a thrilling 3–2 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium to take the 3-game series. Nick Kurtz, the A’s 22-year-old rookie first baseman, played hero with a go-ahead solo homer in the top of the ninth, his sixth of the year, and Mason Miller slammed the door in the bottom half to lock up the series win.

The A’s, owners of the third-worst winning percentage in baseball coming in, showed signs of grit that have often been absent this season. They trailed 2-0 after three innings, thanks to an RBI double by Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. and a line-drive single from Vinnie Pasquantino. But from there, starter Jeffrey Springs and a carousel of relievers kept Kansas City off the scoreboard, retiring 18 of the final 23 batters.

Offensively, the green and gold waited until the sixth inning to strike. Rookie Jacob Wilson, who leads all of baseball’s freshmen in just about every offensive category, singled to set the table. Austin Wynns then drilled a two-run homer to center field, knotting the game at two apiece. It was Wynns’ fifth long ball of the season and just the A’s 89th as a team, still top 10 in the majors despite their struggles.

In the ninth, Kurtz launched Carlos Estévez’s first offering deep to right-center to give the A’s a 3-2 lead. The Royals got the tying run aboard in their half, but Miller fanned two, including Tyler Tolbert to end it, recording his 14th save and flashing the triple-digit heat that’s made him a rare bright spot in a beleaguered bullpen.

The victory gave the Athletics their first road series win since early May, and snapped a 1-4 road trip. Springs, who began the season in the rotation but has recently shifted into a swingman role, allowed two earned runs across five innings. He didn’t factor into the decision, but his ability to avoid a blowup, a common theme for A’s starters this season, kept the game within reach.

The A’s now head back to Sutter Health Park for a four-game set against the division-leading Astros. With back-to-back wins under their belts and youngsters like Wilson and Kurtz heating up, the green and gold may finally be finding a little traction in a season filled with potholes.

#1 Jeremiah, Once again the Sacramento A’s fell in the late innings losing Wednesday to the Houston Astros 5-3 at Daikin Park in Houston. The loss was the A’s 13th out of their last 14 games.

#2 The got another strong performance from their starter Luis Severino pitching six innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts.

#3 A’s reliever Justin Sterner pitched 2.3 innings, three hits, one earned run, and two unearned runs, walked a batter in the bottom of the seventh inning that allowed the Astros to come back and take the lead.

#4 Despite the loss the A’s rookie Jacob Wilson had an offensive day in third inning doubled in Luis Urias, Wilson later scored on Brent Rooker’s RBi double. Wilson in the fifth hit his seventh home run a solo shot that gave the A’s a 3-2 lead.

#5 The A’s are in Toronto Thursday night to face the Blue Jays the A’s will be starting LHP Jacob Lopez (0-2, 2.57 ERA) for the Toronto Blue Jays RHP Jose Berrios (1-2, ERA 4.22). The Jays are playing .500 ball in their last ten games going 5-5.

Severino’s Milestone and Wilson’s Big Day Not Enough As A’s Depart Houston With A 5-3 Loss

The Sacramento A’s flashed early promise in Houston Wednesday afternoon, but once again faltered when it mattered most, falling 5-3 to the Astros after a late-inning collapse erased a strong outing from starter Luis Severino and a standout performance by rookie Jacob Wilson.

Severino, in his 12th start of the season, was sharp across six innings, giving up just two earned runs while striking out six. He reached a career milestone in the first inning, notching his 1,000th career strikeout by getting Jose Altuve to chase a pitch in the dirt.

The A’s took the lead in the third inning thanks to Wilson, who continued his rookie tear by doubling in Luis Urías and later scoring on Brent Rooker’s RBI double. Wilson wasn’t done. In the fifth, he crushed his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to left that put the green and gold ahead 3-2.

Wilson now leads all MLB rookies in hits, RBI, and doubles, and has more walks than strikeouts, a rare feat for any player, let alone a rookie. His performance was a rare highlight on a team that has struggled to produce consistently, especially with runners in scoring position.

The Astros tied the game in the bottom of the third after an error by Wilson helped load the bases, leading to a sacrifice fly by Isaac Paredes. In the fourth, Cam Smith tied it up with a two-out RBI single. Despite the early runs, Severino minimized damage and exited after six full innings with the score knotted 2-2.

Wilson’s home run in the fifth briefly put the A’s back on top, 3-2, but things unraveled in the seventh. Reliever Justin Sterner gave up a solo shot to Zach Dezenzo, tying the game at 3-3. Two singles and a walk later, Victor Caratini punched a sharp grounder into center to drive in two, giving Houston a 5-3 lead it never relinquished.

The A’s offense stalled in the late innings. After Wilson’s home run, the club managed just one hit and two walks over the final four frames. Rooker, Soderstrom, and Langeliers each struck out at least twice. As a team, the A’s struck out 18 times, including the final two batters of the game against Astros closer Josh Hader.

Wilson finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI’s. Urías added a double and a walk, but the rest of the lineup failed to capitalize. Lawrence Butler, who entered the game with hits in nine straight, struck out four times. Denzel Clarke also wore the collar, going 0-for-4 with four punchouts.

The bullpen’s struggles were all too familiar. Sterner, who began the season with an 18.2-inning scoreless streak, has now been tagged for runs in two of his last three outings. Grant Holman came in to mop up but could not undo the damage as Houston’s late offense proved decisive.

With the loss, the A’s drop to 23-33 on the season and remain mired in last place in the AL West. They have now dropped 17 of their last 22 games and are just 3-17 in their last 20. The green and gold are hitting .256 overall but just .244 with runners in scoring position, and the bullpen owns one of the worst ERAs in the majors at 5.96.

The road trip continues Thursday in Toronto, where A’s left-hander Jacob Lopez (0-2, 2.57 ERA) will look for his first win of the season for the Toronto Blue Jays RHP Jose Berrios (1-2, ERA 4.22). If the A’s are to turn this slide around, they will need more than Wilson’s brilliance and Severino’s steadiness, they’ll need consistency from a lineup that too often goes silent and a bullpen that can close the door when asked.
