#1 The Sharks take a six-game win streak into the game with the Washington Capitals on Thursday night. The Sharks beat the Caps back on Tues., Jan. 22 to start this winning streak.

#2 The Caps had such a great run last season winning the Cup. They’ve currently have been playing .500 hockey, going 4-4 in their last eight games. Are they a .500 team or are they better than that?

#3 The Sharks will face Alex Ovechkin, who has set some records for a Russian player. Will Ovechkin be one player that can’t be contained or have the Sharks handled him pretty good in past games?

#2 The Flames opened the game with three goals and finished the contest with three goals.

#3 The Flames remain on top of the Pacific Division with 52 points

#4 The Flames’ Matthew Tkachuk and Jimmy Gaudreau each had two goals. The Flames can really provide some offense.

#5 The Sharks first game of 2019 in Colorado on Wednesday night and the Sharks poured on the scoring with two in the first and three in the third. Down 5-1, the Avalanche rallied to pull within one goal in Wednesday night’s game.

#1 The Sharks, before getting into this current three-game skid, had won five games straight. What’s the reason for the change?

#2 The Sharks have to be one of the most frustrated teams in the NHL right now. They’ve lost three straight going into tonight’s game in San Jose and are expected to be one the toughest postseason teams in the NHL.

#3 How bad is it that all three of those consecutive losses came from playing on home ice?

#4 Their loses have come on close games by one goal and last game on Sunday was no exception. They lost to the Arizona Coyotes by a goal 4-3.

#5 Mary Lisa tells us who she likes in this match tonight between Anaheim and San Jose. The puck drops at 7:30 pm at SAP Center.

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa:

#1 The San Jose Sharks won their second straight game against the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center on Wednesday night with a four-goal win.

#2 This was a demonstration of their healthy offense coming back as opposed to some of the four tough loses they had on their last road trip.

#3 The Sharks Joe Thornton and Timo Meier each had three points against the Canes and Radim Simek picked up his first career NHL goal.

#4 The Sharks goaltender Martin Jones stopped 39 out of 40 shots and faced a lot of offense from the Canes, but stood on his head for the win.

#5 Up next, the Sharks are back on the road to face the Dallas Stars on Friday and Arizona on Saturday.

Jones Saves 39, Sharks Top Canes 5-1; That’s two straight wins for Sharks

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks won on the road for the second-straight game, shelling the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 at SAP Center on Wednesday night. Well, not quite. Despite the Sharks wearing the road whites and feeling the parts of weary travelers, they were actually the home team.

Joe Thornton and Timo Meier each had three points for San Jose, Martin Jones made 39 saves and Radim Simek picked up his first career NHL point in just his second game. Joe Pavelski scored his team-leading 18th goal and Meier, Marcus Sorensen, Tomas Hertl and Barclay Goodrow all scored for Team Teal. Lucas Wallmark scored the lone goal for the Canes.

The Sharks returned from a six-game road swing Sunday night, playing their first home game since November 23rd, but their bags really never had a chance to be unpacked, with San Jose off to Dallas for a Friday night contest before a trip to the Desert for a Saturday showdown with the Coyotes.

Both teams entered play 1-2 in high-danger scoring chances, so offensive fireworks were expected. The fact that they were completely one-sided came as a bit of a surprise though. Goodrow opened the scoring taking a Kevin Labanc feed and going top shelf just 3:44 into the game for his fourth goal of the year. Tomas Hertl scored a power play strike after Logan Couture’s cross-ice pass to Labanc pulled NHL journeyman Curtis McElhinney to his left. Labanc connected with Hertl just to the right of the netminder in the crease for the easy redirect and a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period. The Canes would pepper Jones with 17 shots in the frame but he stood tall to hold down the shutout after 20 minutes.

Timo Meier continued to blossom as San Jose’s best power forward since Owen Nolan, buzzing McElhinney right as Simek ripped a point shot. The naked eye gave Simek his first career goal, but by the grace of video review, Timo Meier was awarded his 14th goal. Simek had to settle for an assist for his first NHL point and a 3-0 Sharks lead 8:42 into the second. Thornton would pick up his first of three assists, notching the secondary helper on the final three San Jose goals.

Joe Pavelski scored what has to be the most fortuitous goal of his season, attempting to flip a puck on McElhinney that looked like it would be harmless. Instead the puck glanced off Jordan Staal and redirected into the Canes net for a 4-0 Sharks edge.

Carolina would finally crack Jones in the waning minute and a half of the middle stanza with Wallmark beating Jones glove side on the power play to score on the Hurricanes 26th shot of the contest. Marcus Sorensen got the goal pack after Meier threaded a pack hand pass that allowed the Swede to rip a shot past McElhinney with just 4:17 left in regulation.

San Jose has now collected a point in three-straight home games and is on a two-game win streak after a five-game skid. They’re off to the Big D for a showdown with Tyler Seguin and the Stars next.

#1 After taking a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers (10-10-2) on Tuesday the San Jose Sharks (12-7-4) came right back on Friday night and shutout the struggling Vancouver Canucks (10-13-2) 4-0. Was this a game of the Sharks showing improvement over Tuesday’s game or the Canucks, who now have lost eight straight, are just a bad club?

#2 San Jose goaltender Aaron Dell save 19 shots and didn’t allow a goal in net for the Sharks.

#3 The Sharks’ Joe Thornton hit a milestone with his 1,035th assist 750 of those with San Jose, eclipsing former Pittsburgh Penguin Mario Lemeiux.

#4 The Sharks got goal help from Logan Couture first period at 10:54 (8), Timo Meier (13) at 19:50, third period Erik Karlsson (2) at 3:43 and Melker Karlsson (1) at 9:35.

#5 The Sharks hit the road starting tonight in Vegas (11-12-1) for the first of five games. How do you see them faring on this current trip?

On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 The Buffalo Sabres’ Jeff Skinner had himself an evening against the the Montreal Canadiens, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to hand the Sabres a 3-2 victory. Skinner also scored a goal late in third period as the Sabres have won eight straight games.

#2 The Anaheim Ducks reassured their confidence with a win over in overtime over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. The Ducks had lost two straight games to the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche. The Ducks’ Richard Rakell scored in first 14 seconds of the overtime stanza to beat the Oilers.

#3 At the T-Mobile Center in Las Vegas, the Vegas Golden Knights’ Alex Tuch nailed a goal and an assist as the Knights got a 2-0 shutout win over the Calgary Flames Friday night.

#4 In a match that was physical to say the least between the Minnesota Wild and the Winnipeg Jets, the Wild got a go-ahead goal that proved to be the gamer when Eric Staal got a goal with just 2:54 left in the regulation. The game saw it’s share of penalties and the Wild were up on the Jets 2-0 after two periods. Wild win it 4-2.

#5 The Washington Capitals got goals from Michal Kempny and Alex Ovechkin at 1:56 in the third period to help defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1. The Caps have won four straight and the Wings are 10-10-2 with 22 points sixth place in the Atlantic Division.

#1 How special was it to have former San Jose Sharks, Jonathan Cheechoo and Douglas Murray, in the house during Cleveland Barons throwback night?

#2 The Cleveland Barons were an NHL team who played in the league from 1976-78. They were the California Golden Seals until the team folded and moved to Cleveland following the 1975-76 season.

#3 The Barons (Barracuda) were taking on the Colorado Eagles and after a 0-0 first, the Barracuda’s Francis Perron scored two goals at 13:04 and 10:33 to put the Cuda in the lead 2-0.

#4 The Cuda added three more goals in the third period–John McCarthy at 6:54, Vincent Parplan at 3:27, and Alexander True 17.9 seconds.

#5 The Barracuda are back to work again after Thanksgiving Day Friday Nov. 23 and Saturday Nov. 24 in Colorado against the Eagles.
