#1 Tony another rough one for the Las Vegas Raiders (2-8) on their homefield losing to the visiting Dallas Cowboys (4-5-1) on Monday Night Football. It was a real “Turn out the lights the party is over” as the Raiders were clobbered 33-16 at Allegiant Stadium.

#2 Raiders quarterback Geno Smith tried to get some passing yards going but Dallas just broke through the Las Vegas offensive line and scored a whopping 21 points in the second quarter.

#3 For Smith 27-42, 238 yards, one touchdown and one interception. No doubt on trying to get anything going it was a frustrating evening for Smith in another loss chalked up by the Raiders.

#4 The Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott pretty much had command and got some time to throw the football going 25-33, 268 yards, and four touchdowns.

#5 Raiders try to pick up the pieces and go at it again next Sun Nov 23 against the Cleveland Browns (2-8) who are having their own problems having lost their last three games in a row. How do you see this match up this coming Sunday at Allegiant with Cleveland?

#1 The Las Vegas Raiders (1-4) absolutely got ripped by the Indianapolis Colts (4-1) falling 40-6. Colts quarterback Daniel Jones had all day to throw.

#2 Jones was 20-29 for 212 yards and two touchdowns the Raiders pass rush just couldn’t get to him he got lots of protection up front.

#3 Raiders quarterback Geno Smith was running for his life against the Colts defense Smith was 25-36 for 228 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

#4 On rushing Ashton Jeanty ran 67 yards on 14 carries and on receptions Tre Tucker had four receptions for 62 yards.

#5 Up next for the Raiders the Tennessee Titans. This one is at home and the Titans have been struggling all season and had not won a game going into last Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Pro Bowl 2024 game recap: NFC wins for second straight year beating AFC 64-59

The NFL’s 2024 Pro Bowl Games concluded on Sunday with the flag football game. The NFC started with a 12-9 lead due to the results of the prior skill competitions. Despite starting off trailing, the AFC got out to an early lead due to a 45-yard Tyreek Hill touchdown which put them up 15-12.

That lead would be short-lived though, as CeeDee Lamb would put the NFC back in front with a pass from Jalen Hurts. They’d convert on the two-point conversion as well, putting them up by four.

Following two quick touchdowns, the defense took control for a short time as both conferences recorded a big stop, the biggest coming when the NFC was able to keep their opposition out of the end zone on a fourth and goal.

With 47 seconds remaining in the first game, Tua Tagovailoa connected with Ja’Marr Chase to retake the lead. They’d hold that lead heading into the “Move the Chains” event, which the NFC would go on to win and we saw another lead change, as it was now 22-21 in favor of the NFC.

The AFC scored on their first opportunity during their second and took the lead back once again, with Keenan Allen converting on a second and goal pass from CJ Stroud. The NFC tried to bounce back, however on first and goal, Geno Smith threw off target and it went right to defensive back Denzel Ward who picked it off in the end zone, barely getting both feet down before going out of bounds.

Stroud then connected with Chase for the second time of the night, extending the AFC’s lead to 33-22. Amon-ra St. Brown brought his conference back within one possession, although it wouldn’t last long. Allen added a passing touchdown to his resume on a trick play, finding Evan Engram in the end zone. Smith threw his second interception of the night, as Patrick Surtain II got a pick-six to extend the AFC’s lead even further. At half-time, the AFC led 47-36.

The NFC continued to dominate the skills competitions though, after wins in the Gridiron Gauntlet and Best Catch, they clawed themselves back into the fight. They would enter the second half of the flag football game with a 48-47 lead and also had the first possession of the half.

They wouldn’t convert though, but when the AFC got the ball they were able to regain the lead with Allen’s second receiving touchdown of the night, this time from Gardner Minshew. Lamb’s second touchdown of the night would bring Eli Manning’s team back into the lead, 55-53.

They’d hold that lead heading into the final skill competition, the tug of war. The NFC won and received three extra points to take their lead to 58-53 heading into the final quarter.

The AFC started the fourth quarter with a first and goal, which they converted as Allen gave his team the lead once again. They failed to convert on the conversion, and the AFC led by only a single point. Jahmyr Gibbs of the Detroit Lions was able to get the NFC back in the league, then the defense got a stop to make sure it stayed that way.

A scramble by Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield into the end zone on fourth down seemed to put the game away, but a late flag came out and the touchdown didn’t count. Instead, they gave the NFC a first down and another opportunity to put the game out of reach.

They weren’t able to do so and Peyton Manning’s team got the opportunity to pull off a comeback win. It came down to a fourth and goal with ten seconds left on the clock. The pass attempt was incomplete and the NFC and head coach Eli Manning walked away with a 64-59 win.

Although the AFC dominated in the flag football portion of the Pro Bowl, they were unable to overcome their disappointing performance in the skills competitions which handed the NFC the win. Demario Davis of the New Orleans Saints was named Defensive Most Valuable Player while the offensive award went to Baker Mayfield.

Oakland Raiders take on the New York Giants with QB Geno Smith (not Eli Manning) at quarterback

OAKLAND — Sunday’s matchup between the Raiders and Giants at 1:25 p.m. PT will begin a stretch where the Silver and Black will play three of their next four games against NFC East opponents, with the Raiders hosting the Dallas Cowboys on December 17 and then travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles on Dec ember 25. Oakland lost to Washington in Week 3 to start the NFC East portion of their schedule.

This will be the first time the Giants have played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum since 2005.

Oakland (5-6) defeated the visiting Denver Broncos in Week 12 by a score of 21-14 in a game that the Raiders desperately needed to keep their playoff chances alive in the AFC. Oakland’s much maligned defense was the fuel that drove the Raiders to victory, holding the Broncos to just 219 yards of total offense and registering five sacks, two apiece by defensive lineman Denico Autry and linebacker Bruce Irvin.

Defensive end Khalil Mack recorded his 10th career sack against Denver, the most for Mack against any team in the league. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman collected Oakland’s first interception of the season, picking off Broncos starting quarterback Paxton Lynch in the end zone, stalling Denver’s scoring opportunity.

As a unit, the defense held Denver scoreless through three quarters before the Broncos scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Oakland held Denver to 5-of-14 on third-down and made starting drives difficult for the Broncos as punter Marquette King pinned Denver inside their own 10-yard line four times.

Raiders starting quarterback Derek Carr had one of his better games of the season, throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-24 passes while posting a 136.3 quarterback rating. Carr completed passes to nine different Raider receivers on the day. Wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson led all pass catchers with three receptions for 72 yards, including a 54-yard reception late in the fourth quarter to ice the game for Oakland.

Running back Marshawn Lynch had his best game by far for Oakland, racking up 111 yards of total offense (67 rushing and 44 receiving) with one touchdown.

The New York Giants (2-9) have had a tumultuous season to say the least.  A team that many prognosticators predicted would be a Super Bowl favorite in the NFC, has been a dumpster fire this season. Both of Big Blue’s wins came against teams from the AFC West, defeating Denver in Week 6, 23-10, and the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime, 12-9 in Week 11.

New York is coming off a 20-10 loss in Washington on Thanksgiving night to begin Week 12.

Injuries are part of the game, and the Giants have had the injury bug hit them the hardest with 16 players on injured reserve this season.

Wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall were lost for the season with leg injuries, the offensive line has been shuffled more times than a deck of playing cards, and the defense which was the team’s strength last season finishing in the top-10 in total defense, has slipped to 22nd this season.

And now the unthinkable has happened: The Giants are benching franchise quarterback Eli Manning, a move that has come under heavy scrutiny by many in sports media and professional sports since the Giants announced the move Tuesday.

Manning will be on the sideline when backup Geno Smith takes the field for the Giants, snapping a string of 210 consecutive starts for the two-time Super Bowl MVP. On the season, Manning has thrown for 2,411 yards with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions with a 84.1 passer rating in 11 games.

But clearly with Manning’s benching, the Giants are aggressively turning the page on the Manning era and the Raiders could be the beneficiaries Sunday with the Giants starting Smith. Smith was an average quarterback in five seasons with the Jets before signing with the Giants in the offseason.

But Smith has had some success against the Raiders and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

In three games against the Silver and Black, Smith has a passer rating of 91.8, his second-highest against any team in his career, according to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press. Smith is 2-1 against Oakland all-time, throwing for 705 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions in those contests.

Rookie tight end Evan Engram is key for New York’s passing offense. Engram leads the Giants with 44 receptions for 470 yards (10.7 avg.) and five touchdowns, tied for the most among rookies this season. Running back Orleans Darkwa powers the Giants’ ground game, rushing for 519 yards (4.6 avg.) on 112 carries and two touchdowns, all career highs.

Defensively for the Giants, eighth-year defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has 6.5 of the teams 20 sacks, while safety Landon Collins leads the team with 86 tackles (64 solo). Cornerback Janoris Jenkins leads the team with three interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns to lead the NFL. Jenkins was placed on season-ending injured reserve this week with an ankle injury.

After Sunday’s game, the Raiders will travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in a critical divisional game. The Silver and Black already hold a victory over the Chiefs after defeating Kansas City 31-30 back in Week 7 in Oakland.

Oakland visit New York for Season Opener

OAKLAND — Finally the preseason is over and now the wins and loses will count for each team on their quest to be one of the final two teams to play in Super Bowl XLVIX  in February out in Glendale, AZ  for the Lombardi Trophy.

The Oakland Raiders hope to be one of those two teams, but will need to break an 11-year playoff drought first in order to make that happen which begins Sunday in New York against the Jets in Week 1.

Oakland finished the preseason 2-2, and had glimpses of a quarterback controversy with backups Matt McGloin and Derek Carr playing well at times in place of projected starter, Matt Schaub. Carr will the first rookie quarterback in team history to make his first start in Week 1.

Well there is no quarterback controversy as FOX Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer reported Monday that Raiders Head Coach Dennis Allen named Carr the starter ahead of Schaub for Sunday’s tilt in the Big Apple.

“Not an indictment on Matt Schaub, Derek Carr is mature beyond his years,” coach Dennis Allen said after Monday’s practice. “We feel very comfortable with him helping us win football games. … Derek is the starting quarterback.”

Schaub, who was battling parts of training camp with elbow tendinitis in his throwing elbow, didn’t play like a starting quarterback in his three starts, throwing for 218 yards, no touchdowns and one interception on 24-of-47 passes. The former Houston Texans quarterback is trying to resurrect his career in Oakland, after a disastrous 2013 season for the 2-14 Texans.

“Matt is disappointed but he has handled it like a pro,” Allen said. “Derek has grown [by] leaps and bounds…He is ready to accept the challenge.”

In three preseason games (missed one due to a rib/concussion injury), Carr finished 30-of-45 for 326 yards passing, four touchdowns and one interception, with a 108.2 QB rating. In his start  against Seattle in the preseason finale at home, Carr looked like a seasoned veteran, taking command of the Raider’s first-team offense on two touchdown drives against the vaunted Sehawks first-team defense.

With the help of what should be a promising running attack with the tandem of Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden, Carr should not feel pressured into trying to win the game on his own. Both MJD and McFadden played sparingly during preseason, and look healthy to shoulder the load on the ground.

Defensively, Oakland made several key free agent acquisitions, most notably with an influx of veteran leadership with the signings of defensive end Justin Tuck, linebacker LaMarr Woodley, and cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Terrell Brown. Oakland is counting on those guys to help improve an Oakland defense that finished 22nd  in total defense in the league last season.

The Jets, who finished the preseason 2-2, are led by second-year quarterback Geno Smith.

Smith, who started all 16 games last season as a rookie, threw 12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions (fourth-most in the league), but did finish with 3,046 yards passing.

New York is banking on the five-year $36.25 million contract they gave former Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker to help the former West Virginia Mountaineer improve on those numbers, and end a three-year playoff absence for New York.

Second-year defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson is the force behind a vastly improved Jets 3-4 defense that ranked 11th in total defense in 2013.

Richardson is the key to the Jets defense, enabling defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson to get after the quarterback.

Wilkerson finished with a career-high 10.5 sacks last year and could make Carr’s first career regular season start a tough one as Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan loves to blitz and give multiple defensive looks to opposing quarterbacks.

If Carr continues to grow and show the confidence that he’s exhibited during the preseason and play mistake-free football, Oakland has a great chance of leaving New York with a win.

 

 

 

 

 

Another loss for Silver and Black

Charles Woodson compared this latest loss for the Oakland Raiders to the baseball team in the 1976 classic movie Bad News Bears.

Lately that is exactly how the Raiders have been playing, and their latest loss against the New York Jets shows just that.

Geno Smith broke Mark Sanchez’s rookie record in a season, as he threw for 219 yards and the Jets defeated the Raiders 37-27 at MetLife Stadium.

On the season, the rookie out of the University of Missouri has thrown for 2,475 yards, breaking Sanchez’s record of 2,444.

Chris Ivory scored on a touchdown run, Nick Folk kicked three field goals and Antonio Allen blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown, as the Jets put a stop to their three-game losing streak.

Matt McGloin threw three touchdown passes, and Marcel Reece scored on a 63-yard touchdown run.

McGloin went 18-for-31 for 245 yards passing.

Reese was forced to start at running back for the Raiders, as they were down three running backs.

This was the third consecutive loss for the Raiders, who fall to 4-9 on the season and this was the 13th consecutive loss in the Eastern Zone.

Sebastian Janikowski continues to have kicking problems, as the veteran missed a 52-yard field goal after the Raiders were able to get a huge interception by Kevin Burnett with the Raiders trailing 3-0 in the first quarter.

With the Raiders trailing by 17 entering the third quarter, Reece gave them a little light, as he took a handoff from McGloin and ran 63 yards for a touchdown.

On the afternoon, Reece finished with 19 carries for 123 yards and that long touchdown run through the Jets defense.

Rod Streater continues to get better each week, as the free agent out of Temple pulled down seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Oakland heads East for date with Jets

OAKLAND — For the second time this season, the Raiders will visit MetLife Stadium this time, will take on the New York Jets Sunday. Oakland lost to the New York Giants, 24-20 in Week 10. The Raiders are playing their fourth road game in five games and have won two of the last three against the Jets, the last being a 34-24 victory in September 2011.

Oakland (4-8) is coming off a close 31-24 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, delivering the kill shot to their playoff dreams.

Quarterback Matt McGloin played decent in his third-career start, finishing 18 of 30 for 255 yards passing, but throw a crucial interception in the end zone to Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr in the fourth quarter that iced the game of Dallas.

Second-year wide receiver Andre Holmes had a marvelous day filling in for the injured Denarius Moore. Holmes posted career-highs in catches (seven) and receiving yardage (136). Even though Holmes did have a breakout game, Holmes still runs questionable routes and misplayed a back-shoulder pass from McGloin.

Running back Rashad Jennings rushed for 35 yards on 17 carries, scoring two touchdowns. Darren McFadden (hamstring) played for the first time in four games, carrying the ball five times for 13 yards, before leaving the game with an ankle injury. McFadden never returned to the game.

New York (5-7) has lost four of their last five games, including last week’s 23-3 lost to their AFC East rivals, the Miami Dolphins.

Quarterback Geno Smith has come under fire in New York for his up-and-down play this season. Smith completed just 4 of 10 passes for 29 yards and interception before being replaced by Matt Simms. Smith is expected to start for the Jets.

Former New Orleans Saints running back Chris Ivory paced the Jets with 61 rushing yards on 21 carries.

Raiders report: Raiders face struggling Jets with interchangable quarterbacks

ALAMEDA–The Oakland Raiders are hitting up the New York Jets at the New Jersey Meadowlands at the opportune moment because the Jets were playing pretty well for the early part of the season they were kind of a surprise team. They won five games and everyone was saying “wow they’re not as bad as we thought, we thought the Jets would be one of the three or four worst teams in the league.”

They’re actually saying a lot of the things that the people were saying about the Raiders that they were surprised that they were winning games. The Jets have in the last several games kind of sunk back to that their in the five worst teams in the league mode. Jets quarterback Geno Smith he’s at least shown flashes of being a competent quarterback in the last four games.

Smith has really kind of regressed they haven’t had any of the offense it’s been all down to the point where last week he was benched for backup quarterback Matt Simms and Simms has never started for any NFL team. Smith might be back this Sunday against the Raiders in the starting line ups.

Smith certainly has the talent he could do some damage and the way the Jets are playing right now there’s no reason to think he’s going to come out and torch the Raiders. Smith is just not playing that well and the Raiders defense is solid enough that they should be able to pressure him and slow him down. To be honest the Jets have one the least impressive set of skill players in the NFL.

That’s not including the quarterback position you just look at the running backs, the wide receivers, the tight ends, the Jets really have nobody of note. Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes is back he’s someone you can’t sleep on but nobody else. They don’t have any depth at wide receiver, their tight ends are no names, their running backs are in and out of the line ups with injuries.

The guys who are in there aren’t particularly good and while the Raiders defense isn’t fantastic they have proven they can stop lousy teams which you saw in Houston a couple of weeks ago and the Jets are on par with that Houston team if not worse. If the Raiders can go in on this one and expect to be in the game it’s never easy to win on the road in the NFL so I don’t expect this to come easy.

The Jets have show they can play good defense and Jets head coach Rex Ryan last week Ryan is particularly good at troubling young rookie quarterbacks we’ve seen it time and time again where rookies and inexperienced QBs go in against the Rex Ryan defense and he completely baffles them with different looks and presenting his players in odd ways that confuse the young quarterbacks.
