That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Sounds unusual and strange as A’s no longer use Oakland moniker for first time since 1968

Sacramento A’s catcher Shea Langeliers sporting a Rickey Henderson T shirt at Surprise Stadium in Surprise AZ before their game against the Kansas City Royals on Mon Feb 24, 2025 (Sacramento A’s X photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 Amaury the Sacramento A’s open this first week at spring training in Mesa for the first time since 1968 without the Oakland moniker while it was expected it still sounds and feels very strange to those are following the A’s in Oakland and those who are following the club in Sacramento.

#2 Amaury, talk about the talk in spring training that baseball is moving down the list as a sport that no longer one of the most popular sports in America. That it’s viewership and interest has fallen and it might fall even worse now that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and ESPN are no longer working together.

#3 Amaury, matter of fact when you go to ESPN’s headline banner on the main page of their website MLB no longer appears as one of the major sports in the banner. It now just shows NFL, NBA, NHL, NCAAM, and More Sports you have to now hunt for MLB on the banner. MLB is buried on the main page banner and ESPN barley mentions MLB in it’s news reports through it’s programming.

#4 How much responsibility does Manfred hold since he has two MLB teams playing in minor league parks for the 2025 regular season, the Tampa Bay Rays are going up for sale and they might move to Orlando, the A’s will not play any post season games in their interim park in Sacramento but at a neutral site if they make to the playoffs, the players are not happy that Manfred is using the robo umpire and they prefer the human umpire, and baseball could move to a salary cap after the 2026 season something the players oppose and could trigger a players strike.

#5 Just how confident are the San Francisco Giants in starting a 42 year old Justin Verlander and how successful will Verlander be in helping the Giants contend. There are those who say Verlander who suffered neck and shoulder pain last season at best could be a ten game winner. Some other critics say that Verlander is washed up.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: City of Oakland wants an Expansion team

Oakland A’s team president David Kaval has been negotiating with the Oakland Coliseum Joint Authority and said the negotiations have been positive from last their last meeting on Thu Feb 15, 2024. (AP News file photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary:

City of Oakland wants an Expansion team

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The season for the A’s begins on March 28, 2024, their last year in the lease with the Oakland Coliseum. Working on the premise that the A’s will be playing in Las Vegas by 2028, the City of Oakland and the Oakland A’s are currently negotiating (preliminary talks) to extend the lease for a few more years, possibly 2025-2026-2027—three more years until their inauguration in Sin City.

The City of Oakland wants a guarantee that if the A’s leave, as expected as of today, in return, Major League Baseball will let Oakland have an expansion team. Sheng Thao, the Mayor of Oakland (currently under a recall campaign), might save her job if she can get such a deal.

Still, it is not a sure thing since the main reason for the recall by Oakland citizens is not about the A’s but about the crime in her city and lack of security. A year after she fired the Police Chief, a new Police Chief has not been named yet.

The Oakland Athletics inauguration in Las Vegas is scheduled for 2028, but expansion teams might not come until 2029. Oakland is not seen today as a possible city for an expansion team. Oakland would have to wait in line after Nashville and Salt Lake City, the current front runners for a new franchise. Commissioner Rob Manfred said, as recently as last week, that MLB will name two expansion cities by the time he retires, according to ESPN.

Let’s suppose the A’s move and open in Las Vegas in 2028, just like they have it planned. Oakland might or might not be one of those two expansion teams until 2029, five years from today. But, since Michel de Nostredame, aka Nostradamus, died in 1566, I do not believe there is anybody today alive in ESPN, the New York Times, Associated Press, Reuters, the San Francisco Chronicle, or the Wall Street Journal qualified to predict how this is going to end.

BREAKING NEWS: Drakes Brewery, a famous San Leandro brewery, just pulled their sponsorship three days before Fans Fest. Last Dive Bar, one of the organizers wrote on Facebook. The fan group said it had incurred expenses including “sponsor banners, a digital marketing package” and “rented equipment to set up a Drakes beer both.” The Oakland A’s deny they have anything to do with this

Around and around it goes, where does its stops nobody knows”. This was one of the lines from “Major Bowes Amateur Hour” a popular radio show that ran from 1934 to 1948, later made the transition to television as “Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour” and to their credit many stars were discovered in his show, including the one and only Francis Albert Sinatra.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: ESPN returns 37 Emmys after investigation

ESPN returns 37 Emmys after investigation

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

From the department of “Who can you trust today in media”.

According to the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) ESPN has returned dozens of Emmys. They (ESPN) were involved for decades in securing trophies for ineligible on-air personalities by submitting fake names for consideration.

It was found that employees at ESPN had been submitting made-up names to the Emmys organization to obtain more than 30 extra trophies and give them to broadcast talent who were not eligible to receive them.

The shocking part of this scheme is that this has happened at ESPN since 2010. The employees at the sports network attached fake names to award entries.

An internal investigation conducted by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and ESPN found that employees at the sports network had been submitting made-up names to the Emmys organization to obtain more than 30 extra trophies for broadcast personalities who were ineligible to receive them.

This is according to ESPN who is admitting and now is coming clean with the whole story. More specific details could be revealed in the future.

ESPN began operations and went on the air on September 7, 1979. In 2024, Stephen A. Smith is the most popular on-air talent on ESPN today, making $12 million annually. CBS Judge Judy is the highest paid in all of television, with $47 million per year for her top-rated show.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Will Ohtani and Yamamoto be worth the $1 Billion spent; Dodger’s Ohtani gifts Kelly’s wife with new Porsche

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani (left) showed his appreciation to Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly’s (right) wife Ashley (center) as Ohtani got Kelly’s jersey 17. This was actually a gift from both Ohtani and Kelly to Kelly’s wife for the numeral change on the jersey. (Getty photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 It was the two signings by the Los Angeles Dodgers this week with designated hitter Shohei Ohtani and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto for a combined $1 billion are these deals going to be worth all that money?

#2 The Seattle Mariners and catcher Mitch Garver have reached a two year $24 million agreement. Garver hit .270, 19 home runs and 50 RBIs. Tell us how Garver will have give the M’s boost in their line up.

#3 Got to ask you about Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly selling his uniform number 17 in exchange for a brand new Porsche from Ohtani for his wife Ashley Kelly. The new car was parked in front of Kelly’s home and his wife answered the door to see the new silver Porsche as the delivery driver told her “it’s yours.”

#4 The San Diego Padres signed Yuki Matsui for a five year $28 million contract. This was the Padres biggest splurge since last spring training. Matsui was the top reliever in Japan where he saved 236 games and had an 2.40 ERA. The Padres are expecting Matsui to be the core of the pitching staff.

#5 ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian said that it doesn’t seem right that the Cleveland Guardians got the number one draft pick and the Oakland A’s end up with the fourth lottery pick. Amaury despite the A’s coming in fourth in the lottery can you see the A’s getting talent for their future in spite of not getting the number one draft pick?

#3 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman appeared on ESPN and took questions from fans one who asked about the Washington Capitals moving to Alexander Virginia. Bettman said that no NHL teams are moving but the Alexander move which would be four miles from where the Caps play now would present a new technology experience “that could very special.” Also Bettman was asked about expansion and mentioned  “Atlanta, Quebec City, Houston, Salt Lake City,” however Bettman said things are working just fine with the 32 teams that the NHL has right now. It would be a Board of Governors decision down the road.

#4 Forbes came out with 2023 evaluations of the teams and the league could get giant money to get an expansion franchise and the Phoenix Coyotes are looking to get a better place from where they are now in Tucson.

#5 The San Jose Sharks who were predicted to have the worst record in NHL history looks like they’ve broke out of any kind of slump they might have been in. They improved winning three out of six on their last road trip returned home on Tuesday and edged out the Winnipeg Jets 2-1. What are some of the improvements they you can point to that has put the Sharks on track these last seven games.

#2 Bruce, New York Jets head coach Robert Soleh said he wouldn’t be surprised if quarterback Aaron Rogers tries to return next season. Do you see him rehabbing and trying again for 2024.

#3 Bruce the San Francisco 49ers Brock Purdy had himself a great opening day against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a 30-7 win. Purdy went 19-29, 220 yards, two touchdowns. How do you see him shaping up for this next game in the Southland against the Rams.

#4 Turning to baseball the San Francisco Giants are just 1.5 game out of the NL Wild Card race. They had won four of their last four games and have played a couple of nail biters with the Cleveland Guardians during the current series. Every win counts and every loss hurts their chances.

#5 As a network why does ESPN put all of it’s coverage on the NBA and NFL and almost never a mention of MLB during the regular programs and talk shows?

Bruce Magowan is a podcast contributor at http://www.sportsradioservice.com

NHL podcast with Len Shapiro: Bettman says $1 mil cap increase considered due to league profits; Habs Dvorak out for rest of season; plus much more

On the NHL podcast with Len Shapiro:

#1 NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says that the salary cap could increase by one million it may not sound like much but it could make a huge difference for club trying to make a trade, draft a player or just make it budget for that free agent. Bettman says revenues have exceeded expectations and an uptick just might be in the works.

#2 Gary Bettman said he’s not ready to reveal who will be the next owner of the Ottawa Senators. Bettman said there are multiple buyers vying for ownership of the Senators but Bettman did say there are bidders of magnitude of interest. Bettman said the sale is not tied to any future downtown arena as the Senators have played in the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata Ottawa since 1996.

#3 Montreal Canadiens Christian Dvorak will miss the rest of the 2022-23 season. Dvorak had knee surgery Wednesday. When it rains it pours Dvorak has not played since Mar 7th when the Canadiens lost to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 suffered a lower body injury.

#4 While you don’t see too much NHL coverage on ESPN during daily programming and a lot of the talk shows and sports reports don’t discuss game recaps but one thing ESPN, ABC and TNT are acknowledging that viewership of NHL hockey is is averaging 1.1 million a 19 percent bump up. The networks are in their second year of their seven year deal with the NHL. That’s pretty good considering the league gets very little mention on ESPN’s daily schedule programming.

#5 Len, the race to the bottom might prove to be fruitful for either the San Jose Sharks 51 points and the Columbus Blue Jackets 49 points in their bid for NHL number one draft pick Conner Bedard. The Sharks just lost in overtime in San Jose to the visiting Blue Jackets on Tuesday night 6-5.
