Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: A’s hope to snap eight game skid against Tigers tonight

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera (24) makes a face that could only scare the Oakland A’s and it must’ve worked as the A’s got crushed by the Tigers 7-3 on Thu Sep 21, 2023 at the Oakland Coliseum (AP News photo)

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson:

#1 Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal set a season high of ten strikeouts in seven innings pitched on Thursday night and won his fourth straight game against the Oakland A’s.

#2 The loss for the A’s was their eighth straight. The Tigers went up by scores of 2-0, 5-0 and 7-0 up until the bottom of the ninth inning. The fact of the matter is through these eight straight loses the A’s offense have been absent.

#3 The Tigers Kerry Carpenter picked up his ninth multi hit game for September and it’s Detroit’s 34th multi hit game for the season.

#4 Jeremiah, the two hitters in the A’s line up that’s been seeing the ball well has been Brent Rooker and Zack Gelof but it’s not enough they whole line up needs to hit and score runs to keep up with the opposing offense?

#5 Sawyer-Gipson Long (1-0 2.70) is starting for the Tigers in game two of this series for Oakland Ken Waldichuk (3-8 ERA 5.40) first pitch at 6:40pm PT.

OAKLAND—The significant news from the Oakland Coliseum tonight wasn’t the first of the four game series  between the Detroit Tigers and your for now Oakland Athletics. Both teams had already been eliminated from wild card competition.

Indeed, Detroit would have had to win tonight and go onto be undefeated in their nine subsequent encounters to reach .500 by the season’s end. I don’t have to tell you that Oakland’s chance of getting into the postseason crap shoot had been shot to hell some time ago.

So tonight’s decisive 7-3 win by the visiting Tigers paled in importance in the face of the stark climatological reality of a game time air quality index of 104 with no significant improvement expected before Saturday.

It almost goes without saying that the PA announced before the game that it was a perfect day for baseball. (After each game, the PA blares its thanks to the spectators “for being the best fans in baseball.” We heard the same message tonight as well).

Luis Medina, one of the four players the A’s got from the Yankees in exchange for Frankie Montás and Lou Trivino last August, sent his first offering into the smoke filled air at 6:41. The young lefty was 3-9, 5.56 in this, his rookie season and went home after the game at 3-10, 5.73.

He lasted five innings, and pitched  acceptably in the first four of them. The two runs he surrendered in the initial frame were earned but not deserved. Two of the three he gave up in the fifth were well and truly earned.  He faced 23 batters in all and threw  80 pitches, 58  of them considered strikes. He allowed six hits and a walk while striking out five. He also committed a run producing balk. It was no surprise that he didn’t come out for the sixth.

Tarik Skubal, a Hayward native, was 6-3, 3.25 for the less than mediocre Bengals when he went to work in the bottom of the first. That’s pretty good, but when you consider that he had gone 4-2, 2.98 in his seven previous starts, you realized that the weak hitting Athletics and their game time team batting average of .224,were up against a formidable opponent, at least as far as pitching was concerned. Although still poor, Detroit’s team BA of .234 before today left little doubt about which team was least bad  in that department.

Skubal’s performance tonight was excellent. He shut the Athletics out on two hits over seven frames, striking out ten and issuing but a single base on balls. He faced 22 hitters, one over the minimum, helped out by two double plays, and threw 87 pitches, 61 for strikes. He earned his seventh victory against three defeats and lowered his ERA to 2.95. Brenan Hanifee relieved him and went the rest of the way.

The Tigers lost no time in taking the lead. Matt Vierling’s leadoff pop fly to short right fell in for a Texas League double. He scored on Spencer Torkelson’s grounder to short that Nick Alllen threw away in an attempt to get Vierling out at home, Torkelson taking second on Allen’s error and then scoring when Andy Ibáñez smacked a triple to right center.

The Tigers tacked on a trio  of talleys in their half of the fifth. Parker Meadows started things with a single to center and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch to Jake Rogers, who then flew out to the right field warning track, advancing Meadows to third.

Verling’s single to center drove in Meadows. Zach McKinstry smacked his 20th two bagger of the year,  a line drive to right that plated Vierling, and kept on running to third on Brent Rooker’s errant throw. After Torkelson went down swinging, Medina ceded an international pass to Kerry Carpenter. Both runners moved up 90 feet, with McKinstry scoring, on a balk.  That made it 5-0, in favor of the men from Mo’ Town.

Mason Miller relieved Medina for the sixth. He pitched a scoreless inning that ended when the A’s challenged second base umpire  Brian Walsh’s safe call on an attempted stolen base by Parker Meadows, who had received a two out walk. The A’s won the challenge, and Miller went on to retire the Tigers in order in the seventh.

That ended Miller’s effectiveness. Torkelson and Carpenter hit back to back singles to kick start the visitors’ eighth, and Ibáñez smacked a single to left through a drawn in infield to make it 6-0- Miller was yanked in favor of Easton Lucas, which, in turn, brought  about a pinch hitter for Miguel Cabrera (how the mighty have fallen!), André Lipcius.

With him at the plate, Lucas unleashed a wild pitch that moved both runners up a notch. After Lucas walked LIpcius, Zack Short pinch hit for Akkil Baddoo. He hit a weak grounder to first that Jordan Díaz fumbled,  bringing in Carpenter and leaving the bases loaded. Then Lucas settled down and retired the side with Detroit ahead, 7-0. Trevor May hurled a 1-2-3 top of the ninth.

Oakland finally ended their string. of goose eggs in their last turn at bat. Kevin Smith advanced to third on a ground out to second by Allen after leading off with a double to left and scored on a wild pitch to Gelof, who reached first on a two out infield single.  Oakannd’s last hurrah came on Rooker’s 28th home run of his rookie season, a blast that cleared the 388 foot marker at the State Farm advertisement in right center.

The series will resume Friday, evening at 6:40pm PT with Ken Wldichuk (3-8, 5.40), another acquisition in the Montás, Trivino trade, facing off against Sawyer Gipson-Long (2-0, 2,70) at the Swinging Coliseum,.

The Giants’ starting lineup featured Austin Slater, Wilmer Flores, J.D. Davis, Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, Michael Conforto, David Villar, Casey Schmitt, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Ross Stripling. Stripling (0-4, 5.77 ERA) took the loss after pitching six innings and giving up ten hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts.

After two scoreless innings, Detroit took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Kerry Carpenter singled on a ground ball to Michael Conforto. Jake Rogers scored as Riley Greene went to third base.

The Tigers made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kerry Carpenter singled on a sharp line drive to Michael Conforto. Riley Greene scored as Spencer Torkelson went to third base.

The Giants finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning and cut the Tigers’ lead to 3-1. Wilmer Flores homered on a fly ball to left field.

The Tigers sealed the scoring with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. Zack Short homered on a fly ball to left field. Andy Ibanez scored.

What a difference a day makes. The Oakland A’s offense recorded 14 hits Wednesday and had four singles against the Detroit Tigers’ pitching on Thursday. The A’s pitching held the Tigers to three runs on Wednesday and gave up nine on Thursday.

The Tigers’ starter Michael Lorenzen, who will represent Detroit at the All-Star game next Tuesday in Seattle, had his way with the A’s hitters. The Tigers pounced on A’s starter Hogan Harris who allowed seven runs before his exit in the fifth inning. The Tigers shut out the A’s 9-0.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first, third, fourth, and one in the fifth off Harris. In the first, with one out, Spencer Torkelson singled. Andy Ibanez doubled, sending Torkelson to third. Harris struck out Tigers’ DH Kerry Carpenter for the second out. Tigers’ shortstop Javier Baez singled to drive in Torkelson and Ibanez to take an early 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, A’s starter Harris Hogan couldn’t find the strike zone. He Walked Matt Vierling and Andy Ibanez to put men on at first and second with one out. Kerry Carpenter singled to drive in Vierling. Ibanez went to third when A’s left fielder Tony Kemp bobbled the ball trying to make a throw. Harris walked Baez to load the bases. Harris walked three men in the inning. Ibanez scored on Jonathan Schoop’s sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The Tigers continued to make life miserable for Harris in the fourth. Harris gave up back-to-back doubles to Zack Short and Jake Marisnick. Short scored to increase the lead to 5-0. Marisnick then stole third. Matt Vierling singled to make it 6-0.

A’s manager Mark Kotsay let Harris start the fifth inning. Harris’ pitch count was nearing 100 pitches as he started the fifth. Javier Baez led off the fifth with a double. Jonathan Schoops’ infield single sent Baez to third. Tiger catcher Eric Haase grounded into a double play, and Baez scored. The Tigers led 7-0. The A’s replaced Harris with Rico Garcia.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth when Jake Marisnick homered leading off the inning. Detroit continued to put runs on the board. They added one more in the eighth to increase the lead to 9-0.

Game Notes. The A’s were shut out for the tenth time in 2023. The only team with more shutouts is the Detroit Tigers. The A’s record dropped to 25-64. The Tigers improved to 37-48

The A’s line was no runs, four hits, and one error. The A’s had four singles in the game. The Tigers’ line was nine runs, 13 hits, and one error.

The A’s were without the services of three key players on Thursday. Ryan Noda, who blasted a two-run dinger on Wednesday, was unavailable due to a temporary illness. He should be back in action Friday night in Boston.

Esteury Ruiz injured his shoulder sliding back to first base on Wednesday and did not play in Thursday’s game. His injury does not appear to be too serious. Catcher Carlos Perez will be out until August 18th with a thumb fracture. Manny Pina took his spot on the roster.

The A’s finish the road trip with three games against the Red Sox in historic Fenway Park starting Friday night. After the game on Sunday, the A’s will be out of action until Thursday as Major League Baseball will hold the annual All-Star game in Seattle.

The A’s announced Luis Medina (2-7 ERA 6.37) as their starter on Friday. The Red Sox have not announced any starters for the three-game series. The game will start at 4:10 pm.

A’s rout Tigers 12-3; Oakland scores big in 1st, 6th and 8th innings in laugher

By Jerry Feitelberg

Wow, the A’s, after beating the Tigers 1-0 on Tuesday, routed the Tigers 12-3 on Wednesday. The A’s offense came to life, and the A’s pitching was outstanding. The team that could muster two hits on Tuesday had 14 hits, including three home runs, that produced 12 runs.

The A’s opener Austin Pruitt worked three innings and retired all nine hitters. Lefty Ken Waldichuk had one of his best outings of the year. Waldichuk took over in the fourth and held the Tigers scoreless until the eighth.

The A’s scored three in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, four in the sixth, and three in the eighth. In the first, the big blow was Ryan Noda’s ninth home run with a man onboard to give the A’s an early 3-0. In the third, Jordan Diaz singled with one out.

Aledmys Diaz doubled to drive in Jordan with the A’s fourth run. The A’s were pounding Tigers’ starter Eduardo Rodriguez. The onslaught continued when Shea Langeliers blasted a solo home run in the fourth to make it 5-0. Tigers’ skipper A.J. Hinch removed Rodriguez from the game.

The A’s made the game a runaway in the top of the sixth as they put four more runs on the board. With one out, She Langeliers singled and went to second on a throwing error by the Tigers’ third baseman Zack McKinstry. JJ Bleday singled, and Langeliers stopped at third.

Nick Allen walked to load the bases. Tony Kemp singled to drive in Langeliers and Bleday, and Allen went to third on the play. Kemp then stole second. Leadoff hitter Esteury Ruiz singled to drive in Allen and Kemp. The A’s led 9-0 after six.

In the eighth, the A’s put more icing on the cake as they scored three times. With one out, Nick Allen and Tony Kemp singled. Tyler Wade was inserted into the game after Ruiz had to leave with an injury. Wade’s fielder’s choice allowed Allen to score.

Kemp was out at second. Jordan Diaz, who had two singles in the game, blasted a two-run home run into the seats in right field to finish the A’s scoring. The A’s led 12-0 midway through the eighth.

The Tigers finally put some runs on the board in the eighth. Waldichuk had allowed the Tigers just one hit in the first four innings of work. In the eighth, Waldichuk walked the first two hitters. He could not keep his fastball down in the strike zone. Waldichuk regained his composure and retired catcher Jake Rogers for the first out. Waldichuk now had to face Miguel Cabrera.

Cabrera, a sure bet for baseball’s Hall of Fame, doubled to drive in the Tigers’ first run. Jake Marisnick, a former Oakland Athletic, drove in the Tigers’ second run with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Tigers added a run in the ninth.

Game Notes- The A’s won for the fourth time in the last five games and the 13th in the last 26 games. Their record improved to 25-63. This team wants the New York Mets to keep their record of 120 losses in a season. Their record over the last 26 games indicates that the team will continue to improve. The Tigers are now 37-48.

Waldichuk was the winning pitcher. He earned his second win. The losing pitcher was Eduardo Rodriguez.

The A’s line score was 12 runs, 14 hits, and no errors. The hitting stars for Oakland were Jordan Diaz, Esteury Ruiz, Shea Langeliers, Tony Kemp, and Ryan Noda. Diaz had two singles and a home run, Ruiz had two singles and stole his 43rd base, Langeliers had a single and a home run, Kemp had two singles and a stolen base, and Ryan Noda had a two-run blast.

The A’s will be going for a sweep on Thursday. A’s manager Mark Kotsay will send lefty Hogan Harris (2-2 5.17) to the hill for Oakland. Harris will be seeking his third win of the campaign. The Tigers will counter with Michael Lorenzen (2-6 ERA 4.28). The game will start at 10:10 am.

A’s need ten innings to beat Tigers 1-0; Oakland’s JP Sears, bullpen shutout Detroit

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s, who usually play at the Coliseum on the 4th of July, found themselves at Comerica Park in Detroit to start a six-game road trip. The A’s, who found themselves on the wrong side of a perfect game last Wednesday, appeared headed into a repeat performance. The Detroit Tigers’ lefty, Tarik, Skubal, making his first start since coming off the IL, baffled the A’s hitters. The Tigers pitching staff allowed just a run and it was just enough for the A’s to get by 1-0.

Skubal was perfect for his four innings of work. He allowed no runs, hits, or walks and struck out six. Yogi Berra once said:” It’s deja vu all over again.” The A’s went 32 years before being no-hit last Wednesday. It looked like they would be no-hit again. This time, six days later.

The Tigers brought in Reese Olson to pitch in the fifth. Olson kept the A’s hitless in the fifth and sixth innings. With two out in the seventh, A’s catcher Shea Langeliers broke the spell with a single.

The A’s starter JP Sears pitched his best game of the 2023 season. The lefty, acquired from the Yankees at the trade deadline last year, pitched seven and 1/3rd innings. Sears allowed five hits and no runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Lucas Erceg retired the next two Tiger hitters to end the eighth. Shintaro Fujinami struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. The game was scoreless after nine innings.

In the tenth, The A’s scored the winning run. Brent Rooker was the ghost runner at second base. A’s manager Mark Kotsay sent Tyler Wade into the game as a pinch-runner for Rooker. Jace Peterson laid down a sacrifice bunt, sending Wade to third.

A’s first baseman Ryan Noda singled to shallow left field to drive in Wade with the A’s first run. They wouldn’t need any more.

Trevor May was brought in to pitch the tenth. Tiger skipper A.J. Hinch replaced ghost runner Miguel Cabrera with Jake Marisnick. May retired Eric Haase and Zack Short. May walked Matt Vierling to put the winning run on first base.

If the Tigers could get a hit, the game would have been tied, and they would have had an opportunity to win. The hitter was Spencer Torkelson. May had his work cut out for him. May did the job as he got Torkelson to fly out to center to end the game. The A’s win 1-0

Game Notes- The A’s won for the third time in the last four games. They are now 24-63. The Tigers dropped to 37-47.

Shintaro Fujinami was the winning pitcher. He is now 5-7 for the year. The Tigers’ Tyler Holton was the losing pitcher. Trevor May earned his sixth save.

The line score for Oakland was one run, two hits, and no errors. The Tigers’ line was no runs, six hits, or errors.

The A’s won the game with two hits. On most days, teams managing just two hits find themselves as losers. Not so in baseball. The pitching for both teams was excellent. Sears did not record the win, but the A’s must be pleased with his performance. Conversely, the Tigers’ pitchers Skubal and Olson were terrific, too. Yet, the A’s found a way to win.

Game two of the three-game series will start at 3:40 pm on Wednesday. Lefty Ken Waldichuk will start for Oakland. Waldichuk is 1-5 and has a 6.78 ERA. Waldichuk has been used as an opener, and it remains to be seen if that will be his role on Wednesday. Lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4, 2.13) goes for Detroit.

Connor Capel of the Oakland A’s (21) strikes out in the bottom of the sixth against the New York Yankees at the Oakland Coliseum on Thu Jun 30, 2023 (AP News photo)

On the A’s podcast with Jeremiah:

#1 Well, the Yankees found their offense again on Thursday as they erupted in the sixth inning to score eight times to break open the game and coast to an easy 10-4 win over the hapless A’s.

#2 A’s starter, lefty Hogan Harris, was pitching relatively well heading into the sixth. Harris had held the Yankees to just two runs in his first five innings.

#3 The A’s scored one in the first, two in the third, and led 3-2 heading into the fateful sixth inning. The Yankees sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth, scoring eight times.

#4The A’s have lost 12 of the last 14 games played. Their record is now a dismal 21-62. The Yankees improved to 45-36.

#5 The Chicago White Sox (36-47) and A’s open up a three game series starting tonight at the Oakland Coliseum. The Sox have not announced a starter as of yet and the A’s will go with Luis Medina (1-7 ERA 6.84) a 6:40pm first pitch.

Oakland A’s Preview: A’s six-game road trip starting in Detroit on July 4th

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Oakland A’s are heading to Detroit to start a six-game road trip and open a series on Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers (37-49) at Comerica Park in Detroit. The A’s finished their last homestand against the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox with three wins and three losses. The most intriguing game during the homestand was the Yankees’ Domingo German’s perfect game last Wednesday night.

The A’s will play three against the Tigers starting Tuesday night. They finish the road trip with three against the Boston Red Sox in historic Fenway Park. The A’s will then be off until July 14th due to the annual All-Star game that will be held in Seattle this year. Brent Rooker will be the sole Oakland Athletic named to the AL All-Star team.

Let’s take a look at this year’s Tiger team. The Tigers last had success several years ago. Their last World Series appearance was in 2012, and that team was swept four straight by the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers and A’s, two iconic franchises, have been playing against each other since 1901. Like the A’s, the Tigers are not stockpiled with well-known names.

Their best player, Miguel Cabrera, is in his final season. In his 20th season, Cabrera broke into baseball with the then-Florida Marlins in 2003. Cabrera was instrumental in the Marlins’ stunning upset of the New York Yankees in the World Series.

The Marlins traded Cabrera to the Tigers a few years later, and Cabrera has posted numbers that will take him to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Cabrera is a lifetime .307 hitter. He has recorded 3,127 hits, 508 home runs, and 1,859 RBIs. He owns a lifetime .904 OPS(on-base plus slugging percentage.) Cabrera has yet to play much this year. If he does play, he will be the DH.

The Tigers infielder will feature Spencer Torkelson at first base, Zach McKinstry at Second, the veteran Javier Baez at shortstop, and Andy Ibanez at third base. Baez starred with the Chicago Cubs for seven years and won a World Series ring with the Cubs in 2016 when the Cubs ended a 108-year drought.

The outfield will have Akil Baddoo in left, Jake Marisnick, a former Oakland Athletic, in center, and Matt Vierling in right. Backups are Tyler Nevin and Kerry Carpenter. Carpenter will also be seen as the Tigers’ DH.

The A’s will have JP Sears on the hill Tuesday night. Sears will be looking for his second win of the year. The Tigers will counter with lefty Tark Skubal. Skubal has no record, and it will be his first appearance this season.

The A’s have not announced their starters for the Wednesday and Thursday games. The Tigers will have another lefty, Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4, 2.13 ERA), handling the pitching chores. Michael Lorenzon will start for the Tigers on Thursday.

The Tigers’ are four games behind the AL Central leaders, the Minnesota Twins. The Twins are in first place with a record of 42-43. There is no team in the Central Division with a winning record. The A’s are now 23-63 for the year. The A’s do not want to set the record for most losses in a season. Oakland has some bright spots in their lineup.

Brent Rooker leads the team with 14 home runs. Rooker will represent Oakland a week from Tuesday at the All-Star game. Another bright spot has been the play of Esteury Ruiz. Ruiz is leading all of baseball with 41 steals. He had played well defensively in center field. He is hitting about. 260 has been able to hit in the clutch with men in scoring position. Ryan Noda has shown potential at first base. Noda has a great eye at the plate. He has walked 57 times and has an OPS of .374.

The Tigers’ pitching staff is better than the A’s on paper. The Tigers’ run differential is minus 76. That means the Tigers’ pitching has allowed 74 more runs than the runs provided by the Tigers’ offense. The A’s run differential is a staggering -237.

The A’s rotation has been a disaster for most of the season. The A’s Paul Blackburn returned to action after a stint on the IL. Blackburn, an All-Star in 2022, pitched well for his first three or four starts. The White Sox sent him to an early shower on Sunday as they beat the A’s 8-7.

Blackburn lost his first game this year. The A’s bullpen has also been an arson squad. The A’s have been shuttling pitchers back and forth from their minor league team in Las Vegas.

After the three games with the Tigers, the A’s face the Red Sox in Boston. A’s manager Mark Kotsay would love to win both series. Players and fans alike know that anything can happen in a short series. No one would have ever expected Domingo German to throw a perfect game. The A’s could win all six games. They could lose all six. Baseball is so unpredictable. That’s why people love the game.

Giants-Tigers postponed from 5 hr rain delay; Giants Look Ahead to Series with Marlins Monday

Detroit Tigers fans called it an evening after waiting in the pouring rain for five hours at Comerica Park in Detroit Sun Apr 16, 2023. The visiting San Francisco Giants packed up their equipment and headed to Miami for a series with the Marlins starting Mon Apr 17, 2023 (AP News photo)

Giants Look Ahead to Series with Marlins

By Barbara Mason

Many fans remained in the stands today hoping to see their Detroit Tigers (5-9) take on San Francisco (5-9) but as time wore on it became obvious that there would be no baseball today. The game was postponed and will be made up on July 24th.

The postponement came after five hours of waiting due to weather. It was a bit of a crazy system with some rain that brought out the tarp but subsided quickly. It was dry for three hours but the tarp remained and fans finally left the stadium scratching their heads. It was curious indeed because of the light rain today and the lengthy period of dry weather that followed the brief rainfall.

At any rate, the Giants now look ahead to their next series, a three game series, against the Miami Marlins (8-8) tomorrow with first pitch at 3:40 PM.

Logan Webb is listed as probable although it has also been indicated that Alex Wood may take the mound for the Giants in the opener. Webb is yet to win his first start with a 4.76 ERA and Wood has had an up and down start. The Marlins will send Jesus Luzardo who has yet to lose a game this season with a 1.93 ERA.

The Giants are looking for some better defense because San Francisco has been producing offense even in their losses. They are averaging 4.93 runs per game which ranks them at 13th. It has undoubtedly been a discouraging first three weeks of this season for the Giants. They have only won two series all season and pitching has struggled. The bullpen is a huge issue ranking 28th.

Michael Conforto, the Giants outfielder, has been producing with 3 homers and 6 RBI’s and San Francisco will be counting on him all season.

The Giants will be facing an unbeaten Jesus Luzardo making his fourth start of the season. He shut out the Mets in his season debut and and he limited Minnesota to a single run in his next outing accounting for his 1.93 ERA.

The Giants have not looked very good in this young season while the Marlins have won four of their last five games; they are playing very well right now. San Francisco will be looking to get on the winning track in this upcoming series.
