This was the second time in two games that the Sharks gave up late leads. After the game, Sharks forward Alexander Wennberg said: “We gotta play a little bit smarter. Obviously, again we had opportunities to finish this game and go away with those two points but… small details.”

Justin Faulk gave Detroit a lead 12:47 into the game with a snap shot on the power play. Mason Marchment was in the box for interference on Andreas Englund. Faulk took the shot from the middle of the blue line off a pass from Emmitt Finnie. An assist also went to Michael Rasmussen.

That was the only goal of the period. There were plenty of penalties called in the second: two for each team, with three seconds of a two-man advantage for Detroit. The shot count favored Detroit 10-8.

Ivar Stenberg made it 3-1 with a power play goal at 2:48 of the third. Andreas Engkund was in the box for tripping Marchment at 1:46. Stenberg had been hovering around the Detroit net early in his shift. He went for a little skate but the cut back down through the slot and caught a centering pass from Alexander Wennberg. Macklin Celebrini also got an assist.

Emmitt Finnie trimmed the Sharks lead at 5:00 of the third. He tipped in a shot from Michael Brandsegg-Nygård. Moritz Seider also got an assist.

With about two minutes left, the Red Wings pulled their goaltender. With the extra skater, Alex DeBrincat tied the game with 1:33 left. The puck pinballed around but the assists went to Viktor Arvidsson and Seider.

The third period only saw two penalties called, one to each team. The shots were 11-8 Detroit.

Macklin Celebrini drew a holding penalty midway through overtime but the Red Wings hung on. The shots in overtime were 5-1 Sharks.
