Sharks Lose 4-3 in OT to Oilers, Give Up 3-0 Lead

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-3 in overtime to the Edmonton Oilers. Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, Evan Bouchard and Zach Hyman scored for Edmonton. Connor Ingram made 17 saves for the win. Collin Graf, Adam Gaudette and Michael Misa scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves in the loss.

After the game, Ryan Warsofsky talked about the matchup and what the team can learn from it: “We got some young guys in those situations against the firepower that they have over there. It’s a good learning moment. That’s what we’ll do, we’ll dust ourselves off and move forward.”

The Sharks scored all of their goals in the first period. The first came just 28 seconds in, a wrist shot from Collin Graf with assists to Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini.

The second goal came just over a minute later. William Eklund stole the puck in the neutral zone and passed it to a speeding Adam Gaudette. Gaudette carried it to the net and scored with a backhand.

The final Sharks goal came at 11:40 from Michael Misa. Misa carried the puck into the zone a high speed. Ingram stopped the shot and kicked it out but it hit Evan Bouchard and came right back in. Assists went to Tim Liljegren and Sam Dickinson.

The Oilers outshot the Sharks 12-8 in the first period. The only penalties called were matching minors so neither team had a power play. The second period was scoreless with two penalties called against Edmonton. The shots were 9-8 San Jose.

Leon Draisaitl got Edmonton on the board with a wrist shot at 1:34. Evan Bouchard sent the puck to the net and it went off of Dmitry Orlov. That helped it slip by Askrov and Draisailt chased it down and nudged it over the line. Assists went to Bouchard and Kasperi Kapanen.

Connor McDavid made it 3-2 with a snap shot from the faceoff dot at 16:55. Assists went to Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

With the Oilers net empty, Evan Bouchard tied it with a slap shot at 19:01. Assists went to Draisaitl and Mattias Ekholm.

The third period saw the Oilers outshoot the Sharks 10-3. The only penalty called went against the Sharks.

The Sharks started overtime with two defensemen on the ice, Mario Ferraro, Tim Liljegren and Alexander Wennberg. The Sharks never got a chance to make any changes to that. Tim Liljegren was cross-checked by Zach Hyman, which led to Liljegren falling and sliding into Askarov while Hyman received a pass from McDavid. Hyman took the game winning shot into an open net because Askarov was also out of position due to the uncalled interference.

The Sharks next play on Saturday at 1:00 PM PT in Calgary against the Flames.

Sharks Fall 4-2 to Red Wings, Smith Scores in Return

The San Jose Sharks fell 4-2 to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. Alex DeBrincat, J.T. Compher, Dylan Larkin and Marco Kasper scored for the Red Wings. John Gibson made 20 saves for the win. Will Smith and Collin Graf scored for the Sharks. Yaroslav Askarov made 21 saves in the loss.

It was Smith’s first game back after being injured December 13. Talking about his return to the lineup, Will Smith said: “I felt good. I think you try to get your legs into it in the first period. So it’s been quite a bit so I was trying to get going a bit and felt pretty good.”

Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said, of Friday’s game: “We couldn’t make a play for the life of us. It just snow-balled from there.” As for the challenge of back-to-back games, he said: “I mean, everyone’s dealing with the schedule, back-to- backs, everyone has it. It is what it is, we gotta find ways to be better in back-to-back nights. I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that but tonight, our legs wouldn’t follow our brains. You know, so, hopefully, it’s a learning moment.”

Alex DeBrincat scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 6:18 of the first period. DeBrincat caught a cross ice pass from Lucas Raymond and snapped the puck into the net from the faceoff dot. Assists went to Raymond and James van Riemsdyk.

Will Smith tied the game at 9:54 by following a Macklin Celebrini shot to the net. The puck trickled past the goaltender and Smith dove to give it an extra nudge over the line. Assists went to Celebrini and John Klingberg.

The shots were 9-7 Detroit in the first, and the Sharks took the only penalty of the period.

Collin Graf gave the Sharks a lead at 1:58 of the second period. Skating to the net, he tipped Nick Leddy’s centering pass. Assists went to Leddy and Sam Dickinson.

J.T. Compher tied it back up with a snap shot at 6:55. The Red Wings got behind the Sharks defense and wound up skating in three-on-one. An assist went to Marco Kasper.

The Red Wings again outshot the Sharks, 9-4, with the only penalty of the period going against the Sharks.

Dylan Larkin gave Detroit at lead at 4:41 with a backhand. Assists went to Raymond and van Riemsdyk.

The Red Wings scored one more goal, an empty netter from Marco Kasper at 18:38. An assist went to Raymond.

The Sharks finally outshot Detroit in the third, 10-7, and they got their first power play of the game as well.

The Sharks next play on Monday in Sunrise, Florida against the Panthers at 3:00 PM PT.

Sharks Beat Capitals 3-2 With 3 Goals in 2:46

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Thursday. Zack Ostapchuk, Collin Graf and Pavol Regenda scored for the Sharks. Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves for the win. Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard scored for the Capitals. Logan Thompson made 23 saves in the loss.

After the game, Sharks defenseman Dmitry Orlov referred to San Jose’s 7-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, saying:

“Much better game than the last game against Vegas. We managed the puck the right way. I would say in the third we kind of gave up a little bit, some pucks around the defensive zone, kind of some soft plays. So there’s always room to learn, to get better. But it’s a tough road trip and it’s good to get the first win today.”

The first period was scoreless, with the Sharks outshooting the Capitals 11-5 and a single penalty called against the Capitals.

Dylan Strome scored the first goal of the game on a power play at 10:58. Alexander Ovechkin passed the puck off the boards behind the net to Strome, who was right at the post to score with a backhand. An assist also went to Jakob Chychrun.

Zack Ostaphchuk tied the game at 13:27 with a snap shot. Dmitry Orlov crried the puck out of the Sharks zone and through the neutral zone, passed it to William Eklund and then chased it down beh8nd the net. He centered it just as Ostspchuk arrived for the shot.

Collin Graf gave the Sharks a lead at 14:53, tipping Pavol Regenda’s shot from the left boards.

Regenda scored the Sharks’ third goal at 16:13. Macklin Celebrini and Collin Graf won the puck battle behind the net and Celebrini passed it up to Regenda for the shot.

The Sharks outshot the Capitals 12-4 in the second period, despite taking two penalties and only having one power play.

Ryan Leonard made it a one-goal game with a snap shot high in the slot at 9:11 of the third period. Assists went to John Carlson and Martin Fehérváry.

The Capitals outshot the Sharks 14-3 in the third period, and took the only penalty.

The Sharks next play on Friday at 4:00 PM PT in Detroit against the Red Wings.

Sharks Win 6-3 Over Canucks, End Losing Streak

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-3 on Saturday. Ryan Reaves, John Klingberg, William Eklund, Igor Chernyshov, Macklin Celebrini and Collin Graf scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves for the win. Linus Karlsson, Drew O’Connor and Marco Rossi scored for the Canucks. Thatcher Demko made 31 saves in the loss.

The win ended a three game losing streak for the Sharks, and also a many-year losing streak in Vancouver. The Sharks had not won a game there since 2019. After the game, Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said: “When we’re skating, playing with structure, we’re competing, we’re a hard team to play against and we’ve seen that this year. We’ve just got to do it consistently.”

Ryan Reaves scored the first goal of the game at 6:11. A scramble in front of the net left the puck sitting in the blue paint between the goaltender and the goal line. Reaves pushed through the crowd and tapped it over the line. Assists went to Barclay Goodrow and Vincent Iorio.

John Klingberg made it 2-0 at 7:55. After catching the puck off of an offensive zone faceoff, Klingberg skated to the middle of the blue line for a wrist shot that went right in. Macklin Celebrini got an assist on the goal.

Linus Karlsson trimmed the Sharks lead to 2-1 with a power play goal at 10:04. Karlsson’s wrist shot came from in close, off a pass from Connor Garland. An assist also went to Filip Hronek.

The Sharks outshot the Canucks 11-8 in the first period. Each team took one penalty.

William Eklund got credit for the only second period goal. Eklund sent the puck into the net traffic and it went off of a Canucks defender and in.

The Sharks outshot the Canucks 11-6 in the second period and, again, each team took one penalty.

Just 36 seconds into the third, Marco Rossi made it 3-2. The rebound from a Filip Hronek shot went up in the air and right to Rossi. Assists went to Hronek and Garland.

Igor Chernyshov scored on the power play to make it 4-2 at 4:47. An Adam Gaudette pass found Chernyshov in front of the net for a wrist shot. An assist also went to Dmitry Orlov as well.

Drew O’Connor scored a short-handed goal at 10:43 with a snap shot.

Macklin Celebrini scored to make it 6-3. Chernyshov passed the puck up from near the goal line as Celebrini tapped his stick to call for the puck. Celebrini shot as soon as he go the puck, wasting no time. Assists went to Chernyshov and Eklund.

Collin Graf scored into an empty net at 18:55. Assists went to Alexander Wennberg and Mario Ferrraro.

San Jose held a small lead in shots in the third, 15-13. Vancouver took three penalties and San Jose took two.

The Sharks next play on Monday in Anaheim against the Ducks at 7:00 PM PT.

Golden Knights Rout the Sharks, Win 7-2; Celebrini, Graf Extend Point Streaks, Loss streak hits

LAS VEGAS- The San Jose Sharks were defeated 7-2 by the Vegas Golden Knights Tuesday. Bret Howden, Mitch Marner, Colton Sissons, Tomas Hertl, Mark Stone and Reilly Smith scored for the Golden Knights (17-8-10). Carter Hart made 21 saves for the win. Macklin Celebrini and Collin Graf scored for the San Jose Sharks (17-17-3). Yaroslav Askarov started the game for San Jose and made 12 saves on 16 shots. Alex Nedeljkovic made seven saves on ten shots in the 7-2 loss at the T Mobile Center.

The loss was the third in a row for the Sharks, and the lopsided score was more reminiscent of last season than this one. “When you’re chasing a game down five nothing, after the first against a team like that, it’s tough sledding,” said Ryan Reaves after the game. He described the Sharks’ game as “Doing everything the exact opposite of what we talked about before the game.”

Bret Howden started the scoring at 1:49. Skating into the zone, Howden passed the puck to Braeden Bowman, who passed it right back for Howden’s snap shot. An assist also went to Reilly Smith.

Next up was Mitch Marner with a power play goal at 9:07. From the hash marks, Marner sent the puck to the net and it went off of SJ21’s skate. Assists went to Noah Hanifin and Pavel Dorofeyev.

At 11:37, Colton Sissons made it 3-0. Skating into the zone two-on-one with Keegan Kolesar, trading passes, Sissons scored with a wrist shot from close in. An assist also went to Brandon Saad.

Tomas Hertl scored with a snap shot at 14:57 from the edge of the faceoff circle. An assist went to Dorofeyev.

The Sharks pulled Askarov out after that goal and sent in Nedeljkovic. On the first shot Nedeljkovic faced, Mark Stone scored with a backhand. Assists went to Ivan Barbashev and Kaeden Korczak.

At the end of the first period, The Sharks had just five shots on goal to Vegas’s 17. The Sharks toook two penalties and Vegas took one.

Macklin Celebrini trimmed the Vegas lead by one at 6:49 of the second period. Celebrini caught a pass in the slot and took his shot. That pass came from Tyler Toffoli.

Reilly Smith restored the five-goal lead at 18:50 with a slap shot off a pass from Korczak. An assist also went to Bowman.

In the second period, the Sharks had even fewer shots on goal, only four. Vegas had just five. The Sharks took the only penalty in the second.

Mitch Marner scored his second of the game at 5:22 of the third. Marner skated into the zone with Stone and Barbashev three-on-two. Marner, in the middle, caught a pass from Stone and scored with a wrist shot.

Collin Graf scored his tenth of the season at 8:04. Graf scored on a rebound from Toffoli’s shot. An assist also went to Alexander Wennberg.

The shots in the third were 14-4 San Jose.

The Sharks next play on Saturday in Vancouver at 7:00 PM PT against the Canucks.

Sharks Lose 4-1 to Flyers, Graf Scores Lone Sharks Goal

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday. Christian Dvorak, Carl Grundstrom, Noah Cates and Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers. Dan Vladar made saves for the win. Collin Graf scored the only Sharks goal and Alex Nedeljkovic made 26 saves in the loss.

After scoring first, the Sharks gave up four goals to the Flyers. After the game, Sharks forward Ryan Reaves said: “You can’t win in this league not playing in your structure. And we show it every other game right now. That’s why we’re just kind of middle of the pack right now and I think we know we should be a little bit higher.”

Alexander Wennberg said:

“I don’t think we came out the way we wanted. We talked about playing fast, playing hard, tough puck plays and get the puck to the net. I mean obviously it’s not to the standard we want. So… disappointing result and there were some good parts to the game but I mean we gotta come in and give them a better fight.”

Collin Graf opened the scoring at 11:33 with a snap shot. Will Smith made a cross-ice pass to John Klingberg, who sent it right back across to Graf for the shot.

Christian Dvorak tied the game at 18:39. Dvorak and Trevor Zegras broke away and went into the Sharks zone two-on-one against Sam Dickinson. Dvorak got around Dickinson and beat Nedeljkovic on the glove side with a backhand. Assists went to Zegras and Travis Konecny.

The Sharks were outshot 16-3 in the first period. The Sharks also took two penalties and the Flyers took none.

Carl Grundstrom scored the second Flyers goal at 3:20 of the second period. Grundstrom tipped a shot by Nick Seeler. A secondary assist went to Travis Sanheim.

Noah Cates scored the third Flyers goal at 19:48 of the second period. Bobby Brink made a pass to Cates as they rushed to the net. Cates beat Nedeljkovic with a wrist shot on the blocker side. Assists went to Brink and Jamie Drysdale.

The shots were closer in the second, 10-8 Flyers. The Flyers also took the only penalty in the period.

Travis Konecny scored the final goal from the Sharks’ blue line into an empty at 18:17. Dvorak got an assist on that one. The Sharks led in shots in the third, 7-4. The Flyers again took the only penalty in the period.

The Sharks next play on Thursday in Toronto against the Maple Leafs at 4:00 PM PT.

Sharks Beat Hurricanes 4-1, Celebrini Earns 3 Points

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Sunday. Collin Graf, John Klingberg, Alexander Wennberg and Macklin Celebrini scored for the Sharks. Alex Nedeljkovic made 28 saves for the win. Jordan Staal scored for the Hurricanes and Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves in the loss.

The win was a noteworthy bounce-back from the two losses that preceded it, and the end of a five-game road losing streak. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic said: “I thought we did a good job of just hunkering down, staying with it in our own end in the third and keeping it simple.”

Macklin Celebrini found Collin Graf going to the net for the first goal of the game, just 33 seconds in. Will Smith got the secondary assist, having kept the puck in the zone before passing it to Celebrini.

The line was a new one for the season. “It was fun, it was a great start, great plays from Smitty and Mack, just going to the net, my stick on the ice,” said Graf. “I honestly didn’t really like see it at first, I just thought I was going to the net and he hit me right on the tape. So, pretty impressive,” he said, of Celebrini’s pass.

The Hurricanes tied the game with a power play goal at 13:38. Jordan Staal deflected a shot from Shayne Gostisbehere. An assist also went to Andrei Svechnikov.

Carolina out-shot the Sharks 8-6 in the first. The Sharks took two penalties in the first and killed one. The Hurricanes had just one penalty to kill.

The Sharks took back the lead with a goal at 7:54 of the second. John Klingberg scored the goal, carrying the puck in and passing it to Celebrini behind the goal line. Klingberg got the puck back when he was in a better shooting position and snapped it in. An assist also went to Philipp Kurashev.

Alexander Wennberg scored on the power play at 15:14. Wennberg snapped home the rebound from William Eklund’s shot. An assist also went to Klingberg.

The Sharks outshot the Hurricanes 9-6 in the second. The only penalty called was to Carolina.

Te only goal scored in the third period was an empty-netter scored by Macklin Celebrini at 18:40. Alexander Wennberg got an assist.

The Sharks took two penalties in the third period, both to Jeff Skinner and both stick infractions. The Hurricanes also had one stick penalty. Carolina outshot San Jose 15-7 in the third.

The Sharks next play on Tuesday in Philadelphia against the Flyers at 4:00 PM PT.

Sharks Fall 4-1 to Stars, Stars Score 3 in third

The San Jose Sharks fell 4-1 to the Dallas Stars Friday. Jason Robertson, Sam Steel, Mikko Rantanen and Miro Heiskanen scored for Dallas. Jake Oettinger made 16 saves for the win. Collin Graf scored for San Jose and Yaroslave Askarov made 20 saves in the loss.

The game was tied 1-1 at the half way point of the third, when the Stars jumped ahead and left the Sharks in the metaphorical dust. The Sharks also took a beating in their last game, a 7-1 loss Wednesday to the Washington Capitals. Asked whether Friday’s game was an improvement over that one, Collin Graf said:

“The last game, we just flushed it as a team. We don’t really want to talk about that one. I think today there were some good things. I think I’ve been playing well, I’ve been creating chances. I just got a lucky bounce. Good job from Delly and Ledz and Kursh.”

Asked a similar question, Sharks Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky said: “Anything better than a 7-1 loss is better.”

The first goal of the game came from the Stars’ Jason Robertson on the power play at 14:20. A rebound from Wyatt Johnston’s shot landed in front of Robertson and he used a backhand to put it away. An assist also went to Mikko Rantanen.

The Stars outshot the Sharks 9-3 in the first. The Sharks took two penalties to the Stars’ one.

Collin Graf tied the game at 8:23 of the second period. Philipp Kurashev threw shot the puck into traffic in front of the net. It came back out and Graf tucked it back in. Assists went to Nick Leddy and Kurashev.

The Sharks outshot the Stars 6-4 in the second period. The penalty count was also reversed, with the Sharks taking one and the Stars two. Only one of those created a power play, as Jeff Skinner and Mikko Rantanen had matching slashing minors.

Sam Steel broke the tie at 10:56 of the third. Steel took a shot from in close and the rebound came back to him. Askarov could not find the puck as it slipped by him near the post. Assists went to Alexander Petrovic and Rantanen.

Rantanen added an insurance goal at 16:39. Rantanen gathered the puck beh8nd the net and carried it out, shooting across off the far post. Assists went to Wyatt Johnston and Vladislav Kolyachonok.

At 17:40, Macklin Celebrini put the puck in the net but, as revealed after a coach’s challenge, Kurashev was off side on the play.

Miro Heiskanen made it 4-1 with a shot into an empty net from the Stars zone. An assist went to Roope Hintz.

Dallas outshot San Jose 11-8 in the third. The Stars took two penalties in the third and the Sharks took none.

The Sharks next play in Carolina against the Hurricanes on Sunday at 2:00 PM PT.

Sharks Upset Wild, Win 2-1 in OT

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday. Will Smith and Collin Graf scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 28 saves for the win. Matt Boldy scored for the Wild and Filip Gustavsson made 16 saves in the loss.

The first period ended scoreless with the Wild out-shooting the Sharks 8-5. Each team took one minor penalty but the penalty kills were perfect.

Matt Boldy scored the first goal of the game on the power play at 5:02 of the second period. Mats Zuccarello set up Boldy with a cross-ice pass from just above the goal line. An assist also went to Zeev Buium.

The Wild outshot the Sharks 15-5 in the second period. The Sharks took three penalties to the Wild’s one.

Will Smith scored a power play goal midway through the third period to tie the game. The goal came off of a four-touch play starting with a drop-pass from Macklin Celebrini to William Eklund and ending with a cross-ice pass from Celebrini to Smith for the shot. Assists went to Celebrini and Tyler Toffoli.

The third period saw the Sharks finally catch up on the shot clock, leading 7-6. The Wild toook the only penalty of the third.

As they had been in much of the game, the Wild looked like the dominant team in overtime. The Sharks spent very little time in control of the puck. Finally, Macklin Celebrini did get the puck and carried it in for a pass through the Wild defense. Collin Graf caught that pass and scored the game winner at 2:41 of overtime. Sam Dickinson also got an assist.

The Sharks next play on Thursday in Calgary against the Flames at 6:00 PM PT.

Barracuda Shutout Reign 5-0, Askarov Makes 22 Saves

The San Jose Barracuda defeated the Ontario Reign with a 5-0 shutout on Saturday. Anthony Vincent, Kasper Haltunen (two goals), Collin Graf and Joey Keane scored for San Jose. Yaroslav Askarov made 22 saves for the win. Erik Portillo made 18 saves for the Reign.

The Barracuda took the lead at 6:27 of the first period with a goal from Anthony Vincent. Vincent redirected a shot from the point by Joey Keane. Assists went to Keane and Donavan Houle.

Lucas Vanroboys of the Barracuda and Shawn Element of the Reign fought at 9:15. Braden Hache took a holding penalty at 11:13, The Barracuda neatly killed of that penalty. At the end of the first, the shots were 6-5 San Jose.

Kasper Halttunen made it 2-0 on the power play at 2:34 of the second period. Filip Bystedt passed the puck across the ice to Haltunen in the faceoff circle. Haltunen’s shot went off of Portillo and into the net as the goalie tried to get across. Assists went to Bystedt and Andrew Poturalski. It was Haltunen’s first AHL goal.

After that, the Barracuda spent some time on the penalty kill. Tristen Robbins was called for slashing at 5:43. Jake Furlong was called for tripping at 11:20. Braden Hache was then called for checking to the head at 18:40. The Barracuda penalty kill was perfect.

At the end of the period, the shots were still very close, 16-15 Ontario.

57 seconds into the third period, the Reign pushed the puck over the line in a scramble at the Barracuda net. But the whistle had already gone and no goal was awarded.

With more than ten minutes gone in the third period, the Barracuda had killed another penalty but had no shots on goal for the period. With the team’s first shot of the period, Collin Graf skated in with a breakaway and lifted the puck over a prone Portillo at 12:24. An assist went to Tristen Robbins.

Haltunen scored his second power play goal at 16:39 of the third. He took the shot off a big rebound right into the slot. Assists went to Luca Cagnoni and Andrew Poturalski.

The final few minutes of the game were riddled with penalties and misconducts. Taking advantage of a turnover in the chaos, Joey Keane added another goal for the Barracuda, making it 5-0 at 18:21. An assist went to Bystedt.

By the end of the period, the Barracuda had balanced the shot count back to 23-22 San Jose.
