#1 The San Francisco Giants (5-3) have won five of their last seven games most of those wins have come on the road. They opened the home season last Friday and have won the series form the visiting Colorado Rockies.

#2 The Giants are getting key hits as the Giants Brandon Belt demonstrated with his three run home run on Saturday it proved to be a vital homer has the Giants would win that game by a run.

#3 The Giants also have been getting key pitching from starter Johnny Cueto in Friday’s home opener he got into the ninth inning and held the Rockies to just one run and gave up four hits.

#4 In Saturday’s 4-3 game the Giants starter Logan Webb gave up three runs and eight hits in five innings of work but four pitchers mopped up in relief not giving up a run for that win as the bullpen comes through.

#5 The Giants open a series with the Central Division leading Cincinnati Reds (5-3). The Reds until Saturday had a six game win streak going. The have been getting excellent pitching in their series last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates they’re offense scored 36 runs in the four game series against the Bucs. How do you see this series which kicks off tonight at Oracle Park?

Giants take Thursday off before homestand with Rox and Reds

Following a much-needed extra-inning victory over San Diego on Wednesday, the San Francisco Giants have an off day on Thursday before starting a weekend homestand hosting the Colorado Rockies at Oracle Park.

The Rockies are off to a 2-4 start, while the Giants are 3-3. Colorado is fifth in the National League in runs scored (37), but struggle with an overall team batting average of .228 (16th). In between a season-opening win over the Los Angeles Dodgers and Wednesday’s 8-0 victory over Arizona, the Rockies lost four straight games.

Ryan McMahon leads the Colorado offense with four home runs and a .381 average and seven runs batted in.

Giants hitting leaders in the early going include Donovan Solano (.409 average), Evan Longoria (.318 avg., .773 slugging percentage, three home runs and five RBI), and Darin Ruf (three RBI, .400 OBP).

Kevin Gausman has yet to win a decision for San Francisco, but has an 0.66 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings along with 11 strikeouts and a 1.32 earned run average in two starts. Jake McGee has a win and two saves out of the bullpen with five strikeouts in four innings.

The weekend probable pitchers (Colorado-San Francisco): Friday – Austin Gomber (0-1, 3.00) vs. Johnny Cueto (0-0, 4.76); Saturday – Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-0, 5.40) vs. Logan Webb (0-1, 5.06); Sunday – German Marquez (0-0, 3.60) vs. Anthony Desclafani (0-0, 1.80).

Following the series with Colorado, the Giants host Cincinnati Monday through Wednesday before an eastern road trip to Miami and Philadelphia.

Amid the controversy over the sign-stealing scandal,which followed the steroids-era,it is fair to say that Peter Edward Rose,also known as “Charlie Hustle”, Pete Rose, who played in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986, might be “looking good” today. Rose hit 4,256 hits more than any other player. He gambled but only on his own team winning as a manager. Ty Cobb ended second in hits with 4,191 and nobody alive today is close to 4,000 hits.

The question today: Is it time to let Pete Rose into Cooperstown? I believe so. I know baseball ultimate sin is gambling, and there are lots of degenerate gamblers all over, many go to Las Vegas to bet on baseball games,but nobody has 4,256 hits. Charlie Hustle was always on base, played for 24 Years (10 of those years 200 plus hits) 3,562 Games,15,890 Plate Appearances,14,053 at Bats. Only one season he struck out over 100 times. Total strike outs for Rose in those 24 seasons:1,143. This strike out category is very similar to Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio, two of the greatest pure hitters in history. I will render my verdict at the end, the way I see it as if I was a juror.

Twenty-nine years have gone-by since 1991 when the Baseball Hall of Fame formally voted to ban those “permanently ineligible” list from induction. Those players were previously excluded by informal agreement among voters. Pete Rose admitted in 2004 that he bet on baseball and on the Reds. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and Major League Baseball are two different entities. However (as of today) the Hall of Fame states that no one on Major League Baseball’s ineligible list can be inducted into Cooperstown. So this means Pete Rose is out.

Hypocrisy? MLB has changed their attitude toward gambling. On November 27,2018 they announced that MGM had become its “official gaming partner”. I know people that bet on different legal sites in the US, the Fantasy Draft attracts a lot of sports betting fans, they have fantasy players on their list and is very popular, specially with the younger crowd of fans. And isn’t that what MLB wants? To bring young people back to baseball?

If it sounds confusing, mixed signals. It is. At the end is baseball that will have to deal with this,with the changes in the culture we live in. I do not have the answer.That is for the “moral philosophers” out there that examine the nature of ethics and foundation of good and back character in our society. Not to mention we are now in the robotic era and social media.

One last question, before my verdict. What stops somebody that stole signs from betting on those games they knew they had the edge?

My verdict: Put Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame, as a player and put an asterisk on his plaque as a manager. And stop fooling yourselves.

#1 The Cincinnati Reds Aristides Aquino connected for three home runs all in the first four innings of Saturday’s game in the Reds 10-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. The Reds hit a total of six homers in the game.

#2 The New York Mets continued their winning ways with their eighth straight win and for the second night in a row a come back win over the Washington Nationals 4-3. The Mets have won 15 out of their last 16 wins.

#3 Is the three game homer going to be the norm the Houston Astros as Yordan Alvarez accomplished the feat in a 21 run win over their hosts the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Saturday in a 23-2 win. The Orioles who are going the other way have had their share of frustrations including this week when Chris Davis and manager Brandon Hyde who got into a out of control argument in the Orioles dugout during a game.

#4 In the game on Saturday night Astros Carlos Correa hit the longest home run ever hit at Camden Yards which landed in the back of the center left bleachers. The Astros were just teeing off.

#5 Speaking of comebacks the Chicago White Sox just got by the Oakland A’s on Saturday night. The Sox with a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth all they needed to do was put the A’s away but not so easy the A’s scored twice falling just a run short to tie it up and lost to the Sox 3-2.

#1 Former Cincinnati Reds first baseman Tony Perez was a super star, a big part of Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine. Then he retired and later became the Reds manager, but was fired after about a month by the then late Reds owner Marge Schott. It was a firing that shocked not only Perez but also the team and many in the organization.

#2 After Perez’ firing at the Reds, he was later hired in Florida, joining the Miami Marlins as a front office executive. Then when Derek Jeter bought and fired former Marlin players Andre Dawson, Jeff Conine, former manager Jack McKeon and Perez. The four have said including Hall of Famers Dawson and Perez said their leaning towards boycotting Jeter’s induction at Cooperstown.

#3 With Perez considering not appearing at the Baseball Hall of Fame induction of Jeter and joined by three other big name ex-Marlins, how does this fly in the face of a Jeter induction and will this be more of a distraction at the Hall of Fame inductions as this most likely will be the topic of conversation at the Hall on the day in question?

#4 This being the Oakland Raiders’ final season in Oakland. The Raiders are in camp and play their first preseason game on August 10th against the Dallas Cowboys at the Coliseum. There will be a lot memories left as the Raiders will close out this season in Oakland.

#5 The Raiders have been the subject of the HBO special “Hard Knocks”. HBO had approached nearly all 30 teams about doing a “Hard Knocks” special, but didn’t get a yes. Fans and viewers have said the Oakland Raiders, who have bucked the NFL and the commissioner in decades past, would be the perfect team to do the special on. Raiders general manager Mike Mayock says does not approve of the special on his team, but nonetheless, the production crew is in camp and in production.

#1 The Oakland A’s won their eighth straight game defeating the Seattle Mariners by a run 5-4 on Saturday at the Oakland Coliseum. With the win, the A’s move into second place trailing first place Houston by 7 1/2 games.

#2 The A’s have won five of their last six series and have swept series in Detroit and Cincinnati. They’ve been very focused on the road during this streak as well.

#3 They have been getting timely hitting from designated hitter Mark Canha whose been filling in for the injured Khris Davis.

#4 The A’s, with the win on Saturday, also move into a tie for second in the Wild Card race proving winning a whole bunch and having some success on the road can move you up in the standings.

#5 A’s and Mariners wrap it up today at the Coliseum. For Seattle, Mike Leake (3-5, 4.73 ERA) vs. Oakland’s Brett Anderson (5-3, 4.14 ERA).
