San Francisco Giants game wrap: Sox’ nine-run inning leads to victory over Giants, 9-4

San Francisco — The Giants and White Sox faced off for game one of a three game series Friday night at Oracle Park. After a heartbreaking loss that resulted in a sweep Wednesday afternoon in Arizona, the Giants looked to bounce out of the loss column with a series opening win, only to lose following a nine-run fourth inning rally. Final score, 9-4.

Giants manager Tony Vitello turned to right-handed pitcher Trevor McDonald for the start on the mound. McDonald had spent time bouncing between the AAA River Cats and the Giants this season, but entered Friday’s game with strong numbers for the orange and black. Through three starts, he owned a 2-0 record, 2.37 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. On the other side, the White Sox handed the ball to Davis Martin. Martin entered the game leading the American League with six wins while posting a 1.61 ERA, 0.982 WHIP and 3.0 WAR.

The first three innings were scoreless as both pitchers settled into an early rhythm. Giants starter Trevor McDonald was perfect through three innings before the White Sox offense erupted in the fourth. Chicago opened the inning with back-to-back hit batters before Colson Montgomery’s infield single loaded the bases. With one out, Chase Meidroth drew a walk to force in the game’s first run. Andrew Benintendi followed with a two-run double, and Edgar Quero added an RBI hit to make it 4-0.

The White Sox were far from finished. Derek Hill’s RBI single pushed the lead to 5-0 and prompted manager Tony Vitello to turn to the bullpen. Ryan Borucki entered and immediately hit Nick Antonacci, marking the second time Antonacci had been hit by a pitch in the inning, making him just the seventh player since 2000 to be hit twice in the same frame. With the bases loaded, Munetaka Murakami cleared them with a three-run double to extend the lead to 8-0. Miguel Vargas then reached on an infield single that got away from Rafael Devers, allowing Murakami to score and cap the nine-run inning before Montgomery struck out to end the frame.

The damage had been done. 13 at bats, five hits, nine runs. Boos rained down from the fans at Oracle Park. The nine allowed to the White Sox in one inning is the most runs allowed in a single inning by the Giants since August 16th, 2020 vs the Athletics (also nine). They have seen a lot of struggles lately, and that 4th inning symbolically captured how this season has come to be for the Giants so far.

The Giants half of the 4th inning was a polar opposite to the White Sox’. They went down in order, one-two-three.

The remainder of the game the White Sox were kept off the board. The Giants attempted to mount a comeback with a three run 5th inning and another added run in the 6th. The four runs were too little too late for the Giants, as the score ended 9-4.

Despite the unfavorable score, the 37,524 in attendance were still lively. Starting in the 7th, the MLB-wide “tarps off” trend came alive at Oracle Park. Beginning in the centerfield bleachers, a group of an estimated 50-75 fans began waving their shirts over their heads like rally towels. Soon the rest of Oracle Park caught on, and fans in every section were waving their shirts with pride. It was the loudest the ball park got all night, and a witty way to go about the situation on the field. No luck from the rally tarps in igniting a Giants comeback, but fun at the ballpark on a cold San Francisco night.

With Friday’s loss the Giants move to 20-31, a season-low 11 games under .500 after four straight losses. Two wins in their last nine. Davis Martin got the win, his 7th on the season leading the American League. His ERA now sits at 2.04, good enough for eighth-lowest in the MLB.

Game two is Saturday, first pitch at 1:05 p.m. PST. RHP Erick Fedde scheduled to be on the mound for the White Sox. RHP Adrian Houser gets the nod for the Giants.

San Francisco Giants podcast Augie Mesenburg: Giants pitching still struggling; Sox light up SF for nine run 4th inning; Tarps off doesn’t influence outcome

San Francisco Giants starter Trevor McDonald allowed three hits and seven runs in the top of the eighth inning against the Chicago White Sox at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Fri May 22, 2026 (SF Giants Instagram file photo)

San Francisco Giants podcast Augie Mesenburg:

The San Francisco Giants are trying to find out what kind of team they are and starting pitcher Trevor McDonald got lit up in the top of the fourth inning by the Chicago White Sox for three hits and seven runs. Releiver Ryan Boruki got touched up following MacDonald 1.1 inning allowing two hits and one run.

The Giants are not playing that well they came off a three game sweep by the Arizona Diamondbacks on the road trip and were eaten up in the top of the ninth inning by the White Sox. McDonald had success in his first two outings for San Francisco but was lit up in his appearance against Chicago.

The Giants have a go at it again on Saturday starting pitcher for the White Sox RHP Erick Fedde (0-4 ERA 4.30) and for the Giants RHP Andrian Houser (2-4 ERA 5.25) first pitch 1:05pm PDT.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Strikeout rates high is pitch clock helping offense?; Cubs Counsell says it’s bizzare Dodgers carrying 14 pitchers over MLB maximum; plus more new

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell stands for the national anthem on opening day Thu Mar 26, 2026 against the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Counsell is questioning why the Los Angeles Dodgers are allowed to have one pitcher over the MLB maxium of 13 pitchers giving LA 14 (AP photo)

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 With strikeout rates still high across Major League Baseball, are recent rule changes (like the pitch clock and shift ban) actually improving offensive production, or do pitchers still have the upper hand?

#2 Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell finds it strange that the Los Angeles Dodgers are allowed to carry 14 pitchers while the MLB maximum for pitchers on a roster is 13. The Dodgers use Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher and a designated hitter on his off days from pitching so it would seem Ohtani is not counted as being on the pitching staff. The underlying talk has been the Dodgers are an exception because Ohtani is a cash cow and huge draw for baseball so MLB looks the other way on the 13 maxium pitchers on a roster rule.

#3 With the Sacramento A’s recent success especially against some competive teams and recent series wins against a four game 2-2 split with Texas, winning two out of three with Chciago White Sox and taking the first of a three game series from the always tough Seattle Mariners and are first place in the AL West can this A’s team compete this season.

#4 The Mets continue to struggle losing their 12th straight game to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Francisco Lindor defened his manager Carlos Mendoza saying he’s not the problem the team just isn’t putting it together. The players like Lindor are standing up for Mendoza.

Sacramento A’s podcast Barbara Mason:

#1 The A’s went into Sunday’s game with the series tied looking to beat a young but very capable Chicago White Sox team.

2. It was a tough outing for Jeffrey Springs pitching through five innings but giving up nine hits and a whole lot more setting up the White Sox nicely.

3.Once Springs was relieved the A’s relief pitching really stepped up keeping the White Sox off the scoreboard.

4.Sacramento made a game of it in the seventh inning when they had not only some great offense but took advantage of walks and wild pitches.

5. Next up for the A’s a three game series with the Seattle Mariners starting Monday night at T Mobile Field in Seattle. In the past the Mariners have had the A’s number but they have at times turned that around. How do you see the A’s fare in this series.

Sacramento A’s podcast Daniel Dullum:

#1 Chicago White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Varga both launched a home run a piece as the Sox hit four home runs off Sacramento A’s pitching at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento on Sunday.

#2 Sox pitcher Noah Schultz pitched five plus innings and allowed just one hit to pick up his first big league win against the A’s.

#3 Schultz struck out six hitters and walked just one batter to help the Sox take the three game series. Schultz had his stuff working for him keeping the A’s off balance just enough to help Chicago beat the A’s by three runs.

#4 The A’s Zach Gelof got a two out two run double in the bottom of the seventh off White Sox reliver Grant Taylor. Jordan Leasure came into relieve Taylor and threw a wild pitch that allowed Gelof to score to make it 7-4 that would be all the runs the A’s would get for the rest of the game.

#5 The A’s open up a three game series in Seattle against the Mariners. The Mariners will be another test for Sacramento the A’s are hoping to win a series after some of their struggles at Sutter Health Park. Sacramento A’s podcast Tony Harvey: Sox 4 run seventh costly in A’s 9-2 loss at Sutter Health

The baseball is at Chicago White Sox runner Luisangel Acua (0) has the baseball at his back and A’s first baseman Nick Kurtz (left) won’t get it in time for the putout at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento

Sacramento A’s podcast Tony Harvey:

#1 The Chicago White Sox Munetaka Murakami’s first career grand slam launched the White Sox into the win column with a 9-2 win over the Sacramento Athletics on Friday night at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.

#2 The Sox also got good pitching from Davis Martin who gave up three hits over seven innings pitch surrendering three hits and one earned run. No doubt Martin had his stuff working for him.

#3 Sacramento pitcher Aaron Civale struggled pitching 4.2 innings he got racked up by Sox hitting for 11 hits and five earned runs.

#4 A’s Nick Kurtz slugged a RBI single in the last of the fourth that sent A’s Shea Langeliers home and the A’s Andy Ibanez hit for an RBI scoring Max Muncy and that was all the damage the A’s could muster on Friday night.

#5 Match ups for Saturday at Sutter Health Park for the White Sox RHP Erick Fedde (0-3 ERA 3.38) for the A’s RHP Luis Severino (0-2 ERA 5.59) first pitch 1:05pm PDT.

White Sox Power Past A’s 9-2 in Series Opener in Sacramento

By Jeremiah Salmonson

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics welcomed Munetaka Murakami and the Chicago White Sox to Sacramento on Friday night for the beginning of a three-game series.

The White Sox handled business behind a powerful offensive performance, defeating the Athletics 9-2 in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,027.

Aaron Civale started the game for the A’s and was immediately in trouble as he gave up a leadoff double, and the White Sox never looked back. Civale struggled locating his pitches, which led to hits and not walks on this particular occasion. Civale managed to go four and two-thirds innings while allowing five runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out four. Civale needed 103 pitches to get through his laborious outing.

“I think there’s probably a lot of balls left in the middle of the plate tonight…he grinded…I thought he gave us everything he had tonight,” Mark Kotsay said after the game.

In the clubhouse, Aaron Civale was doing his best to move on from the draining outing in which he threw 103 pitches.

“I felt like we were doing a good job out there, competing,” Civale said after the game to reporters. “From what I can tell, it’s just kind of one of those days you gotta flush it and move forward.”

The A’s bullpen came in and looked to keep the game within striking distance, but they weren’t able to do that.

Elvis Alvarado came on in relief and tossed two innings of his own. Elvis gave up four runs on a mammoth grand slam to Munetaka Murakami that cleared the batter’s eye in center field. All in, Elvis tossed 45 pitches in his two innings of work while giving up three hits and walking three batters while striking out three.

The A’s finished the game with Justin Sterner, who was on the mound for the A’s late collapse on Thursday. Sterner tossed an impressive two and a third innings of one-hit, no-run baseball while striking out four batters and not allowing a walk. It was a nice bounce-back for the right-hander, who needed 46 pitches to get it done.

On the offensive side, the Athletics couldn’t get much going against the White Sox. Starter Davis Martin for Chicago was dealing early and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning. In total, the A’s managed two runs while collecting four hits and walking four times against the White Sox staff.

The A’s scored two runs, with one coming in the fourth inning and the other in the eighth inning.

In the fourth, Nick Kurtz had an RBI single into right field that scored Shea Langeliers from second base.

In the eighth, Andy Ibáñez collected an RBI when he grounded out to score Max Muncy from third base.

Other than that, the A’s were blanked by the White Sox staff on a brisk West Sacramento night, falling by the final score of 9-2.

With the loss, the A’s fell to 10-10 on the season and will take on the White Sox in Game 2 of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. PST. Luis Severino (0-2, 5.59 ERA) will take the mound for the A’s, while the White Sox will send Erick Fedde (0-3, 3.38 ERA) to the bump.

San Francisco Giants game wrap: First day of cuts ends with 3-3 tie against White Sox

By Stephen Ruderman

SCOTTSDALE AZ–The Giants ended up tied with the White Sox 3-3 in a nine-inning affair from Scottsdale Stadium.

If you are wondering why we ended up tied, spring training games rarely go extra innings these days. So let’s look at how we got here.

Trevor McDonald got the start, and went four innings, giving two runs on four hits. He walked one, and struck out four. Both runs came via the solo home run. Lenyn Sosa lined one out to left in the top of the second, and Derek Hill hit one out the other way to right in the top of the third.

Matt Gage, who is working on a new splitter here in camp, gave up a hit and struck out two in the top of the fifth. Keaton Winn, who has been pumping the gun this spring, gave up a hit and struck out a guy in a scoreless top of the sixth.

Will Brennan, who has had a sneaky-good camp, got the Giants on the board with a perfectly-placed ground ball base-hit up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Chapman then lined a two-out, two-strike base-hit to left off Eric Adler to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Chapman ended up going 2-for-3 tonight.

The White Sox scored a run off Tristan Beck in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead.

Left-hander Juan Sanchez, who has an interesting herky-jerky motion, walked the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, but was somehow able to get out of it unscathed. In that inning, Darren Baker, who was over here from the White Sox’ minor league camp, stole second and third. The kid has got some real speed, and he could be quite valuable for a lot of major league teams.

Eric Haase walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Jarred Oliva then pinch-ran, and seemed to feel quite inspired by Darren, as he stole second and third as well. Jerar Encarnacion got Oliva in with a sacrifice fly to right-center to tie it, and that would turn out to be it for the night.

Giants make first four cuts:

Prior to the game, Manager Tony Vitello announced the first four cuts of camp. Among the casualties were right-handed pitchers Will Bednar and Trent Harris; catcher Diego Cartaya; and outfielder Bo Davidson, one of the Giants’ top prospects.

Birdsong sidelined with elbow trouble:

Giants’ pitcher Hayden Birdsong finally had his first solid outing of the spring on Tuesday, but is now being sidelined with a right elbow injury, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. According to Slussler, the Giants will defer to the team’s medical staff before any decisions are made.

Other notes:

Harrison Bader led off tonight in his return from the World Baseball Classic, and went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Rafael Devers went 0-for-4 tonight to make it 0-for-15 on the spring. Hey, he’s coming off an injury, and oh yeah, it’s Spring Training.

Daniel Susac, who is currently locked in the battle for the backup catcher’s role against Jesus Rodriguez, went 1-for-2 with a solid opposite-field base-hit to right and a walk.

#2 The Sox Kyle Teel hit a go ahead two run double with the bags juiced in the bottom of the seventh inning. It also left Giants starter Justin Verlander winless in the 2025 campaign in 13 appearances.

#3 The Sox starter Jonathan Cannon with the help of five relievers were all able to strike out 11 batters. Tyler Gilbert was able to strike out two hitters in an inning of work to get the win. Closer Mike Vasil was able to close the door for his second save of the season.

#4 Verlander has not won in 13 straight starts which is the longest streak for a starter since 1901. The previous loss streak for Verlander was seven games. Verlander is a three time Cy Young Award winner.
