Svechnikov starts and ends game against Sharks in 3-2 shootout

By Pearl Allison Lo

The Carolina Hurricanes’ Andrei Svechnikov scored both the first and shootout goals to lift his team over the San Jose Sharks 3-2 at PNC Arena on Thursday.

It was the Hurricanes’ second shootout win of the season, the first achieved the first game of the regular season. For the Sharks, it was their first shootout loss and the first time they went to a shootout on the road during the same period. San Jose never led in this game.

Both teams were pretty evenly matched. Shot wise, they both had nine apiece in each of the first two periods with the Sharks edging Carolina overall 30-29.

The Hurricanes got the first goal in the first two periods with Warren Foegele the primary assist on both. Svechnikov put his team up on the board 50 seconds into the game.

However, San Jose was able to rally by the end of each period. Logan Couture’s tally came with 17.6 seconds left before second intermission.

With several players battling for control in the first, Foegele finally pushed the puck to open ice and found Svechnikov who had space and time to skate around goalie Aaron Dell.

Joe Thornton drew his defender and goalie Petr Mrazek to the left side before making a swift pass to Marcus Sorensen who had plenty of open ice to make it 1-1 at 7:16 of the first.

In the second, play started in Carolina’s end. With long passes and a rush advantage, the puck went between Foegele and Jake Gardiner three times before Gardiner was able to find a spot between Patrick Marleau and Dell at 10:12.

Between goals in the second, non-scoring action occurred when Mrazek slashed Thornton and Thornton cuffed him up front high in retaliation, knocking Mrazek down and resulting in a multi-player scuffle. Both players received slashing penalties, Thornton’s a double minor at 12:50 with roughing added.

From the top of the left faceoff circle, Erik Karlsson passed to Couture, who sent in a laser from above the right faceoff circle past three players in his shooting lane before Mrazek.

The Sharks outshot the Hurricanes 10-5 in the third and Carolina outshot San Jose 6-2 in overtime.

The Hurricanes’ Dougie Hamilton hit the post during overtime and both goalies had quality saves.

San Jose’s Kevin Labanc was first in the shootout and hit the post. Svechnikov was the only whose shot entered the net out of six players.

Up Next: The Sharks remain on a power play drought. They won the faceoff advantage by a 66.7% to 33.3% clip. San Jose’s four-game road trip continues with the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday at 4 pm PST.

On the NHL podcast with Matt:

#1 The Vancouver Canucks, who face the San Jose Sharks tonight at SAP Center, had won five straight, but snapped their streak by a goal 2-1 to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night. The Sharks, on the other hand, are a struggling bunch who have four straight, but are back on home ice. Matt tells us how he sees this matchup.

#2 Speaking of streaks, the New York Islanders topped the Tampa Bay Lightning for the Isles’ eighth straight win 5-3. The Isles got goals from Matthew Barzal (6), Ryan Pulock (2), Josh Baily (5), Anders Lee (5), Derrick Brassard (4).

#3 The Philadelphia Flyers got by the New Jersey Devils 4-3. The Flyers got scoring from Oskar Lindblom (7), Sean Couturier (3), Joel Farabee (11). Flyers won in a shootout.

#4 The Washington Caps won by a convincing five goals 6-1. The Caps scored four times in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres in a period that pretty much established the game. The Caps’ Jakub Vrana scored twice in the first period.

#5 The Carolina Hurricanes got four goals in the second period that pretty much put a lock on the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-3 win. In that second period, the Canes got goals from Sebastian Aho, who scored twice; Nino Niederreiter; and Martin Necas.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Len Shapiro: Sharks on two-game win streak, take on a successful Canes team tonight at SAP Center

On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 The San Jose Sharks coming back from a three-game road trip that went 1-2 and after going 0-4 in the first four games got their legs and beat the Chicago Blackhawks for their first win of the season on Thursday, October 10th, but it was the addition of Patrick Marleau that seemed to change the mood in the dressing room.

#2 What were some of the vast improvements you saw after Marleau’s return to the Sharks?

#3 In the game against the Calgary Flames on Sunday night, the Sharks got goals from Timo Meier, Kevin Labanc, and Tomas Hertl and got some great goaltending from Martin Jones, who stopped 30 out of 31 shots for the win.

#4 It’s been only two wins, but in those two wins, the Sharks looked like a different team after losing their first four games.

#5 The Sharks host the Carolina Hurricanes (6-1-0) Wednesday night at SAP Center. How much of a test would you say this game will be as the Sharks take on a very talented Canes team?

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: People still asking are 49ers for real; Raiders continue out of town trip in Green Bay Sunday; plus more

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 Are the San Francisco 49ers an optical illusion or are they for real? People are pinching themselves over the Niners at 5-0 and their amazing performance on both sides of the football.

#2 The Oakland Raiders continue their long strange trip this time against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday. The Raiders play their fourth game out of the last five weeks out on the road and they’ve won their last two games.

#3 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said for the Oakland City Council to get its act together soon or the Oakland A’s will move to Vegas. Some question if Manfred was more on the hasty and demanding side, while the city has put a legal hold on the A’s ability to buy the Coliseum property. In the meantime, CA Gov. Gavin Newsom said he will try to expedite the construction of the A’s new stadium at the Howard Terminal.

#4 The Cal Bears are coming off a tough loss to Oregon October 5th and host OSU at Cal this is expected to be a much better game this Saturday than their last game in Oregon.

#5 No one would have thought that San Jose Sharks’ Patrick Marleau would be the difference in turning things around after the Sharks went 0-4 and now they’re up to 2-4 and could close in on .500 on Wednesday night with a win over the Carolina Hurricanes at SAP Center.

#6 Calls went against the Detroit Lions Trey Flowers for hand to the face on Monday Night Football on the second hands to the face call it forced the Lions into their own red zone and the Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers took a knee twice and with just a little over a minute left the Packers kicker Mason Crosby kicked a 23 yard field goal for the 23-22.

San Jose Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh: Marleau’s return the difference in Sharks’ first win; Sharks host Calgary on Sunday

On the Sharks podcast with Mary Lisa Walsh:

#1 How much of a difference did it make signing Patrick Marleau after losing four straight and Marleau coming in to score two goals to San Jose with a one-goal win 5-4?

#2  How much prep did Marleau need? He wasn’t with a team and he last played with the Carolina Hurricanes and that was only for a week after the release by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

#3 Marleau was excited to be back in San Jose, but his teammates shared that same excitement, and after going 0-4, they didn’t have pressing feelings and just got by Chicago 5-4.

#4 The Sharks’ Brent Burns scored his 200th career goal. After all that Burns went through — the hard work, the goals and play system of the Sharks — it was a goal well-earned.

#5 The Sharks return this Sunday to host the Calgary Flames. It will the be Sharks’ first chance to get their first home win after losing their home opener on Friday, October 4th.
