#1 Matt taking a look at Friday night’s NHL action the Buffalo Sabres got scoring help from Jeff Skinner and JJ Peterka who both scored goals and got an assist to help defeat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 at KeyBank Center in Minneapolis. Sabers defenseman Henri Jokiharju scored the other Sabres goal with goaltender Devin Levi stopping 33 for Buffalo.

#2 The Florida Panthers Matthew Tkachuk and Carter Verhaeghe each scored a goal and an assist helping the Panthers to extend their win streak to three with a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday. The Panthers Alexander Barkov scored a goal and an assist and Uvis Balinskis scored his first goal as a Panther at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise.

#3 The Washington Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov scored two goals to help beat the New Jersey Devils 4-2 at the Prudential Center in Newark on Friday night. In his season debut for the Capitals right winger Nicolas Aube-Kubel picked up a goal and an assist, Tom Wilson had two assists and goaltender Charlie Lindgren stopped 24 shots in the win for Washington.

#4 The Toronto Maple Leafs William Nylander scored two times and got an assist and picked up his 14th consecutive game point in the Leafs shootout win over the Calgary Flames 5-4 at Scottiabank Arena in Calgary. Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll stopped 24 shots in the one goal win.

#5 Matt what could you say about the Vegas Golden Knights who picked up a huge win over the San Jose Sharks on Friday night at T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Knights scored twice in the first period and picked up another three goals in the third period in the 5-0 final. Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen was just overmatched as the Knights attacked the zone and the net for multiple red lights behind Kahkonen in the San Jose loss.

#1 Calgary Flames forward Elias Lindholm signed a brand new six year contract worth $29.1 million worth $4.85 million per season. Linholm had made it pretty clear that he wanted to stay on with the Flames and got his wish. Linholm had 325 points, 139 goals, and 186 assists in 369 games with Calgary over five years.

#2 The Florida Panthers Matthew Tkachuk said he’s ready for the Panthers camp. Tkachuk suffered a fractured sternum during the first period of game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Las Vegas Knights on June 8th. Tkachuk said he’s feeling fine and is ready to start the pre season. Len, how important is it to have Tkachuk back.

#3 Tomas Tatar signed a one year deal with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday for undisclosed amount. Tatar formerly played for the New Jersey Devils last season having 48 points, 20 goals, 28 assists, and was a plus 41 in 82 games for New Jersey.

#4 Len, the Edmonton Oilers first line players Evander Kane, Connor McDavid, and Connor Brown looks like they’ll be a strong line going into the season for the Oilers. The Oilers second line Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl, and Zack Hyman. They’re identical to the first line how do you see the Oilers strengths going into the season with these players.

#5 Len, talk about the line of William Eklund, Anthony Duclair, and goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen how each of these players can be a difference maker in the San Jose Sharks season?

Kähkönen has Career Night But Sharks Burned By Wolf, Flames 3-1

Kaapo Kähkönen made 46 saves, Radim Simek picked up his second assist of the season and Noah Gregor scored his 9th goal of the season, but the San Jose Sharks fell to the Calgary Flames 3-1 Wednesday night in Calgary. Nikita Zadorov potted the hattrick for Calgary (38-27-17) in their first game since being eliminated from playoff contention and Gilroy native Dustin Wolf turned aside 23 Sharks shots to win his first NHL game.

Kähkönen set a career high in saves and shots against for the losing Sharks (22-43-16). He matched his high of 46 shots against once besides his second start of his career, the same game in which he made 44 saves to beat the Florida Panthers 4-2 as a member of the Minnesota Wild.

On Wednesday he saw 48 and stopped 46. Baffling, he was omitted in the Three Stars of the game in favor of a deserving Zadorov and Wolf and not so a debuting Matt Coronato who made his debut for Calgary and registered no points and four shots on goal and was +1.

Simek started the Sharks goal-scoring play by breaking up a play in the Sharks end then feeding a streaking Gregor with a pass through center ice. Gregor followed up his first attempt and got the rebound to Wolf’s right for his ninth goal of the year 10:26 into the first period.

Nine goals sets a new career high for Gregor who scored eight last year in 63 games. It was also Simek’s first assist since December 13th against Arizona and his third point overall in 43 games.

Zadorov tied the game after sneaking through the Sharks defense undetected. He took a pass from Andrew Mangiapane and buried it at the 13:36 mark of the second.

He added a wrist shot score 4:01 into the third for a Flames 2-1 lead, this time working through traffic. MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri assisted on the game-winning goal.

While Zadorov netted the third goal on an empty netter, credit is due for the degree of difficulty. He hit the empty net from his own defensive end with a minute left in regulation for his 14th goal of what has been a career year.

The Sharks season wraps up Thursday night against the Edmonton Oilers. The Sharks currently sit in 29th place with 60 points. The Blackhawks and Ducks have one game remaining and sit at 58 points while Columbus is clear three points of San Jose with two games left.

#1 The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames are tied for second place in the Wild Card in the Western Conference. The Nashville Predators are just one point behind the Jets and Flames. The Predators have one game in hand on the Flames. The Predators and Flames face off in Calgary on Monday night.

#2 Minnesota Wild left winger Kirill Kaprizov is expected back in the line up tonight at the XCel Energy Center in St Paul after missing 18 games with a lower body injury. Kaprizov was injured on Mar 8 when he was taken down by Winnipeg Jets defenseman Logan Stanley in a 4-2. The Wild missed Kaprizov in the line who lead the Wild 74 points, 39 goals and 35 assists.

#3 The Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar and forward Darren Helm are out indefinitely due to lower body injuries both have missed two games in a row. Markar has missed nine games in a ten game stretch between Feb 9 to Mar 1.

#4 Matt talk about tonight’s game that has two winning teams the Vegas Golden Knights (49-22-8) and the Dallas Stars (43-21-14) taking a look at the high scorers for the Knights Jonathan Marchessault and Jack Eichel both lead with 27 goals. For the Stars Jason Robertson 45 goals and Roope Hintz with 35 goals.

#5 Matt, how impressive is it for the Seattle Kraken to clinch for a playoff birth in the second year of their turn around. The Kraken have done something in their short existence that other teams would hope they could do. Also the Kraken have a great minor league team to pool from the very successful Coachella Valley Firebirds.

#6 Saw former Vancouver Canucks head coach Bob Boudreau on the NHL Network since leaving behind the bench for the Canucks in February talk about his coming back to the NHL Network and is this a happier place for him than working at the Canucks?

#1 The New York Rangers Chris Kreider and Tyler Motte scored a goal each in the Rangers win over the Tampa Bay Lightning to notch closer to second place in the Metro Division. The Rangers picked up a 6-3 win at Madison Square Garden and are now just three points behind first place New Jersey Devils.

#2 The Calgary Flames are in a tie with the Winnipeg Jets for a second wild card for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Western Conference. The Flames defeated the Jets 3-1 at Canada Life Centre Wednesday night. You wanted to say something Jacob Marston.

#3 The Edmonton Oilers are having a great season and their closing in on first place in the NHL Pacific Division picking up their sixth straight win defeating the Anaheim Ducks 3-1. The Oilers Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reached 100 points and goaltender Jack Campbell stopped 27 shots. The Oilers extended their points streak to 12 games.

#4 The Minnesota Wild Kirill Kaprizov got to practice on Wednesday for the first time since Mar 8th due to a lower back injury. Kaprizov wore a non contact sweater during the practice. Kaprizov will sit out Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However Kaprizov could return on Saturday against the St Louis Blues.

#5 The Washington Capitals will miss their first post season for the first time in eight years It’s the first time the Caps have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2013-14 season. The Capitals played .500 hockey (34-34-9) but was not good enough to make the playoffs. The Caps are in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.

#1 Lots happening between the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night. The game went into overtime that saw the Flames Jonathan Huberdeau score the tying goal in the third period. The the Flames Tyler Toffoli scored the winning goal at 3:27 in overtime. The Canucks Aidan McDonough scored his first NHL goal but the Canucks fell short in OT 5-4 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

#2 The Buffalo Sabres came back to defeat the New York Rangers in overtime 3-2. Mostly thanks to the strong defensive goaltending of Devon Levi who stopped 31 Rangers shots on Friday night. This was the 21 year old’s first NHL game and Levi help keep the Rangers out of the Nets for the most part in the a close game.

#3 The Winnipeg Jets made it clear they were the dominant team against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night with a four goal 6-2 win at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. The Jets Mark Scheifele scored his 39th goal of the season giving him his most goals in a season and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 23 shots ending a brief two game losing streak.

#4 The Dallas Stars Jason Robertson scored four points with three assists and one goal in the Stars 5-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes. For Robertson this was a season scoring record with 95 points, 42 goals and 53 assists. This was the first time the Stars have won consecutive games since Mar 11-13.

#5 Matt, two more games for the Pittsburgh Penguins Kris Letang to reach 1000 games he did not play on Saturday, Letang is just two games short and Letang after some very difficult injuries and two strokes in 17 years of NHL play has arrived at the 1000 game plateau that’s saying a lot for the fight that Letang has been through.

Karlsson Sets Career High in Assists, Sharks Lose 5-3 to Flames; Ninth straight loss for San Jose

The San Jose Sharks lost their ninth consecutive contest Saturday Afternoon, falling to the Calgary Flames 5-3 from Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Erik Karlsson picked up a pair of assists notch a single-season high in assists and Nico Sturm, Logan Couture and Martin Kaut scored, but the lone good news from the Sharks (19-39-15) this weekend was via the signing of college prospect Henry Thrun out of Harvard.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice for the Flames to surpass the 30 goal mark and tie a career high for the Flames (33-26-15) who now sit four points pack of the Winnipeg Jets for the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

Nazem Kadri scored 5:45 into the third period, netting his 23rd of the year, to put Calgary ahead 4-3. Tyler Toffoli added the empty netter with 1:10 left in play for the final score. The Sharks had led 3-2 late in the second period after trailing 2-1 after the first period.

MacKenzie Weegar and Toffoli scored in the first 10 minutes of the first period but Logan Couture’s netfront drive put the Sharks on the board at the 14:25 mark of the period. Karlsson took a pass from Andrew Agozzino and drove down the right wing, pulling Jacob Markstrom to the post before feathering a pass to a crashing Couture for a deflection goal, his 25th score of the year. Karlsson picked up his 67th assist, a single-season career high on the play.

Nico Sturm tied the game 4:52 into the second period, backhanding a Noah Gregor shot pass by Markstrom for his 14th goal of the year. Karlsson assisted on the goal as well, his 90th point of the year with nine games left to play. Martin Kaut added his third goal of the year and second with the Sharks since coming over at the trade deadline just 22 seconds later.

The Flames responded at the 5:39 mark of the period, tying the game just 25 seconds after the Kaut goal. Trevor Lewis intercepted a failed Sharks clear and passed it to Walker Deuhr, open to Kaapo Kahkonen’s right on the far post. Deuhr ripped it home for his fifth goal of the season. Kahkonen made 25 saves on 29 shots in the Sharks net.

The Sharks return home Tuesday night looking to snap their losing skid. They’ll face the Winnipeg Jets, the team directly above the Calgary Flames in the standings. After that, the Vegas Golden Knights await a Thursday night tilt at home for the Sharks. The possibility that the loss streak will be at 11 by the time the Sharks face the Coyotes in Glendale on Saturday remains real given the quality of opponents ahead.

#1 Matt, talk about Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery this is his second team in the NHL he first coached the Dallas Stars before being fired by them in 2019 and has done a bang up job as head coach leading the club to a 26-6-4. Talk about the job Montgomery has done building up the Bruins?

#2 Under Vancouver Canucks (19-26-3) new head coach Rick Tocchet he’s 2-1 so far and in the first win he handled the Chicago Blackhawks rather handily 5-2 and in the second game in Seattle the Canucks got crushed 6-1, and on Friday the Canucks picked up a three goal win over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2. It’s early to tell but the Canucks critics say should have held onto Bruce Boudreau and let him finish out the season.

#3 Matt, are the Toronto Maple Leafs going to miss Austin Matthews something awful, Matthews is out with a knee sprain for three weeks, Matthews is second in goals, and is third in points. Matthews injured himself on Wednesday against the New York Rangers during a 3-2 overtime win.

#4 The Florida Panthers Aleksander Barkov will replace Matthews at center at the NHL All Star game in Florida on Sat Feb 4th. Barkov is second on the Panthers with 43 points with 13 goals and 30 assists. He should get a good ovation when he is introduced in Sunrise next Saturday.

#5 Despite winning seven of their last ten games the Chicago Blackhawks (15-28-4) and defeating one of the tougher teams in the NHL the Calgary Flames (23-17-9) 5-1 on Thursday night in Calgary the Blackhawks are looking to deal stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews each player is in the final year of their eight year contract.

Calgary scores four times in third period, upends Sharks 7-3

Tyler Toffoli and Nazem Kadri each scored twice and Jonathan Huberdeau assisted on three goals, as Calgary defeated San Jose 7-3 Tuesday at SAP Center.

It was the second game of a home-and-home series – the Flames beat San Jose 5-2 Sunday night in Calgary.

Calgary improved to 15-12-6, 34 points, and 5th in the Pacific Division. They trail Edmonton by two points in the NHL West Wild Card race. San Jose, 7th in the Pacific, dropped to 10-18-6, 26 points.

Calgary opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the first period on Toffoli’s 12th goal of the season. 15 seconds later, Toffoli assisted on the seventh goal of the season for Dillon Dube, giving the Flames a 2-0 lead.

Nico Sturm put the Sharks on the board at 14:58 of the first period, his ninth, from Timo Meier. A minute later, Sturm and Calgary’s Brett Ritchie were assessed five-minute majors for fighting.

The Flames extended their lead to 3-1 midway through the second period on Trevor Lewis’s seventh goal. San Jose pulled to within 3-2 with 37 seconds left in the period when Alexander Barabanov scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Scott Harrington and Matt Nieto.

Meier’s 17 goal of the year, assisted by Erik Karlsson – his 30th, tied the game at 10:04 of the third period. But the Flames went ahead to stay at 10:04 on Kadri’s 12th goal, which blew the game open.

Milan Lucic scored his second goal of the season for Calgary at 16:43, followed by an empty-net tally by Toffoli at 18:22 and Kadri’s second goal of the contest at 18:42.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 of San Jose’s 27 shots on goal, while Sharks’ netminder James Reimer gave up six of Calgary’s seven tallies while making 32 saves.

The Sharks host the Minnesota Wild Thursday, with the opening faceoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

#1 Maddie, the Sharks (10-17-6) have lost six of their last eight games, Sharks are now 13th in the Western Conference and have lost their last two games Saturday to the Los Angeles Kings in LA and Sunday in San Jose by three goals to the Calgary Flames (14-12-6) 5-2.

#2 The game kicked off with the Flames putting on the pressure as Kahkonen had to be sharp early on. That pressure by Calgary paid off as in their own zone Jaycob Megna made a terrible pass essentially giving Tyler Toffoli a goal. Which he did capitalize on getting his 11th goal of the season and making it 1-0 early with no assists on the goal.

#3 The domination continued as at the 9:23 mark of the first period the shots favored the Flames at 7-1. A glimmer of hope did appear for San Jose as Adam Ruzicka took a tripping penalty getting the power play unit on the ice.

#4 After the Sharks took the three goal loss Tomas Hertl said after the game, “Especially tonight I don’t think we spend enough time in the O zone we don’t have all four lines rolling the O zone.”

#5 Maddie, Sharks get another chance at the Flames for the second game in a row at SAP Center in San Jose after losing the Flames Sunday the Sharks are looking for some defense and some pucks of their own in net?
