Cal podcast with Morris Phillips: Will wins in Pac-12 Tournament translate to saving Jones’ coaching job?

On the Cal podcast with Morris Phillips:
#1 Will a couple of wins during the Pac-12 Tournament equate to saving Cal head coach Wyking Jones’ job?
#2 The Bears’ Connor Vanover was shooting baskets and he looked like he had lots of daylight against the Stanford Cardinal. He led the Golden Bears with 24 points and was the key player in leading Cal to that big road win on Thursday night.
#3 Paris Austin had 15 points and Matt Bradley 14 also were offensive contributors and a big help in Cal’s third straight win
#4 The Bears ran off a 17-0 run and that pretty much clipped the wings of the Cardinal, who towards at the end of the game pulled within four points, but couldn’t catch Cal, who got the 64-59 win.
#5 Cal plays the Colorado Buffaloes (19-11). The Buffaloes are no slouch. They have compiled some successful offense that got them past some of their opponents and the defense have shut some of their opponents down for some key wins and 19 wins says a lot about the year the Buffaloes have had. Does Cal have any chance to win in Vegas and will this be a lights out game for Cal?

On the Stanford Cardinal podcast with Joey:
#1 The Cal Bears, who couldn’t win a Pac-12 conference game to save their lives, took two games from the Washington Huskies and the Washington State University Cougars, and dominated Stanford on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion at Stanford.
#2 For Cal, Connor Vanover and Austin Paris led the Bears in scoring in the first half of Thursday’s game.
#3 It was Stanford’s home floor, the Cardinal normally don’t have too much problem at home. Is Cal a possessed team since getting those two wins against those Washington schools last week?
#4 What’s it going to be like for Stanford when KZ Okpala leaves for the NBA Draft?
#5 Talk about the job that Cardinal head coach Jerod Haase did against Cal on Thursday night in trying to back into the game.

Cal Bears basketball Thursday recap: What a difference a day makes; Cal dominates Stanford for third straight win 64-59

PALO ALTO — The Cal Bears’ Connor Vanover led Cal in scoring with 24 points on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion, helping the Golden Bears to their third straight victory in one of the most exciting, shocking turnarounds for this season in the 64-59 victory. With 56.7 seconds left, Vanover hit a three-pointer after Stanford cut the lead to just four points. Vanover hit nine out of 12 shots and had five three-pointers and blocked six shots.
The Bears, who set a school record of 16 straight losses, have re-invented themselves and have won three straight against three difficult opponents: Washington, Washington State University, and Stanford. On offense, Paris Austin had 15 points and Matt Bradley had 14 points. Bradley was a scrapper all night he had seven rebounds and fouled out of the game. For the Cardinal, KZ Okpala led Stanford with 21 points and eight rebounds and Josh Sharma had 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Cardinal’s Justin Sueing had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Cardinal Cormac Ryan hit two three-pointers, which helped cut the Bears lead down to 58-55 after Vanover’s three-pointer. Sharma then scored on a dunk. Grant Antecevich and Sueing also hit free throws to add to the score.
It was 17-0 run for Cal that made the difference and showed why this team is fired up. The Bears’ offense dominated and put the Bears up from three points to the five-point victory. The Bears went from zero to hero going from 16 straight losses to three straight wins, making them the hottest team in the Pac-12.
The Bears head to the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas next week. If the Bears could win two or three in Vegas it might secure head coach Wyking Jones’ job situation, which at one time was questioned and more over vocalized by the fans at Haas Pavilion during some home games.
The Bears will head to Vegas for the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament and face the fifth seed, which is yet to be decided.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris Phillips: After two straight wins, Cal prepares for Stanford Thursday
photo from yahoosports.com: The Cal Bears defense was all over the Washington Huskies last Thursday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley the first of two wins for Cal
On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:
#1 The Cal Bears are coming off two wins against the mighty Washington Huskies and the Washington State University Cougars. Morris talks about Cal’s motivation to win their first two Pac-12 games.
#2 Getting two wins in the Pac 12 after nearly going winless has to build confidence going into the Pac-12 tournament.
#3 Now 7-22 coming off a 76-69 win, was the game against WSU a game where the Bears could see improvement in ball movement and getting their shots?
#4 Darius McNeill led Cal with 17 points for a big offensive day. Cal also distributed the ball well.
#5 It’s off to Stanford Thursday night, a 8:00 PM tip. Could the Bears come in with momentum and possibly get this game?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal can’t hold first half lead, still winless in the Pac-12

On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris:
#1 The Arizona State University Sun Devils (19-8) Luguentz Dort led with 22 points and the Cal Bears (5-22) lost by ten points 69-59 on Sunday to remain winless in conference play.
#2 Matt Bradley for Cal led with 23 points and ten rebounds. No matter what the score was or who won, Bradley put it all out there, offensively.
#3 The Bears held a first half lead 34-28 and there was some hope they very well would have a shot at winning this one, but in the second half, ASU scored big 41-25.
#4 Once again, in the postgame press conference, head coach Wyking Jones can’t put a finger on how to get this team turned around.
#5 Cal comes home to host the Washington Huskies (22-5) Thursday, Feb. 28th. The Huskies are a team on fire. Morris talks about Cal’s chances to try and get a win in conference play against UW.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal heads to ASU in hopes to pick up their first Pac-12 win of the season Wednesday
On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris:
#1 The Cal Bears (5-20) head into Wednesday night’s game to face the ASU Sun Devils (17-8). The Bears are winless in the Pac-12, could they go winless for the rest of the way at this rate?
#2 The Bears’ big highlight in their 89-66 loss to the USC Trojans (14-12) on Saturday night was a three-pointer from Jacob Orender in the closing minutes of the game.
#3 The Trojans’ Benny Boatwright made himself at home with 36 points and 10 assists. With Boatwright, was it a matter trying to contain everyone or was Boatwright USC’s go to guy all night long?
#4 Bears head coach Wyking Jones said that the defensive woes carried into the offensive woes. How so?
#5 It’s off to Arizona State University for a Wednesday night tip with the Sun Devils. What are the Bears’ odds to get their first win this season in this one?

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips and Michael Duca: The effort was there, but Cal remains winless in the Pac-12
On the Cal Bears podcast with Morris and Michael:
The Cal Bears (5-18) didn’t leave neither the States of Oregon or Washington in a state of grace. The Bears remain winless in the Pac-12. There were some things in the game against the Oregon State Beavers (18-5) to be pleased about on Saturday night’s 79-71 loss.
Cal lost by eight and they were only down and were in striking distance and in fact were in range to take the lead inside two minutes of this game. It was the Beavers 73-71 with just over a minute remaining. Cal was down by two, but they didn’t score again.

Headline Sports podcast with London Marq: Raiders’ move to Oracle Park, hitting a major snafu–political and territorial
On the Headline Sports podcast with London:
#1 Hall and Oates once penned a hit single called “I can’t go for that” while that old tune is starting to be hummed as San Francisco Mayor London Breed says that the idea of the Oakland Raiders playing in San Francisco is hitting a snafu. The deal looked good for a minute as the San Francisco Giants were prepared to host the wayward Raiders, but all for getting the ok from the San Francisco 49ers, who were mum on Tuesday and the Mayor came out and said the Raiders should play their games in Oakland and not in the City.
#2 Breed said that with the basketball Golden State Warriors with construction at the South of Market Chase Center, UCSF Hospital, a new landing area for ferry boats,1400 units of housing. Essentially, the City may say no to all the traffic congestion with two big league teams all going at the same time.
#3 During Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, the subject of the Raiders playing in San Diego came up and during a press conference NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that the league wants the Raiders to finish up their final season (2019) in the Bay Area.
#4 Other Bay Area options: The Raiders could used the very stadium from the team they need territorial rights from the San Francisco 49ers for use of Oracle if they get denied on that from the City then they might have to share Levis Stadium with the 49ers. This would be done only as a favor to Goodell and the league as this is the Raiders last season, but you can best bet the 49ers will be getting a share of the profits no matter if it’s at Oracle Park or Levis Stadium.
#5 The discussion of using Cal’s Memorial Stadium went off the table because of the lack of parking near the stadium and Stanford Stadium was not discussed and not considered. The subject of the Raiders going back to finish their last season at the Oakland Coliseum is now back on the table and to see if the City of Oakland and the Raiders could iron out some of their issues to make that happen. In the meantime, the NFL is waiting anxiously to make their schedules for next season.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Michael Duca and Morris Phillips: Bears came close, but Okpala and Cardinal turn it up a notch
californiagoldenblogs.com photo: The Stanford Cardinal and Cal Bears do battle last Sunday at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley
On the Cal Bears podcast with Michael and Morris:
#1 Another tough loss for the Cal Bears (5-16) on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion as the Bears lost to the visiting Stanford Cardinal (11-10) 84-81.
#2 The Cardinal’s KZ Okpala led with 30 points and eight rebounds. He was hard to contain for the Bears all afternoon.
#3 Okpala had his 12th game scoring 20 or more points last season. He scored 20 or more points eight times. He’s been a force and had given the Bears fits to contain him.
#4 According to Stanford coach Jerod Haase, Okpala has some more developing to go. He’s working out just fine and provided the nine of the last 19 points of the game that really put a crimp in Cal’s game.
#5 The Bears are in Oregon (13-9) for Wednesday, Feb. 6th. Morris sets up that game.
