#1 Morris, Cal head coach Justin Wilcox reflected on the tough loss in their last game October 5th at Oregon (4-1) saying “It’s not one person, the way we meet, the extra work they do” referring to the work ethic of the team was that element lacking referring to the loss to the Ducks on the 5th?

#2 Morris, talk about Cal’s defensive backfield: Ashtyn Davis, Jaylinn Hawkins, Trey Turner III, Treyvon Beck, Josh Drayden, Camryn Bynum, and Elijah Hicks. How much of a percentage you would put on the game in Oregon that defense was there or not there?

#3 How much pressure will be on David Modster to get it done this coming Saturday. He just wasn’t able to get some of the passes he wanted in Oregon last game.

#4  Modster will get a chance to throw against Oregon State (2-4). Oregon State had their heads handed to them in their last game by the Utah Utes (5-1) 52-7 nearly getting shutout. Could Modster have a game like that throwing for scores all day?

#5 Lastly, talk about coach Wilcox’s game plan the Bears need a lot more offense than they got in Oregon and how sore is the wounded Golden Bear that wants to come out with a vengeance on Saturday?

#3 The Golden State Warriors struggled in their first preseason game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Are they showing signs or cracks of a different older team — not as fast, not as accurate — or is this a real study of them finding who they are without Kevin Durant?

#4 The Stanford Cardinal (3-3) got an important 23-13 win against Washington (4-2) on Saturday, thanks to the help of Cameron Scarlett, who carried 33 times for 151 yards and one touchdown.

#5 A tough loss last Saturday in Oregon (4-1) for the Cal Bears (4-2) and quarterback David Modster. The Bears only got one touchdown against the Oregon Ducks.

#1 Talk about how bad the shoulder is for quarterback Chase Garbers. Will he be able to play against the Oregon Ducks this Saturday?

#2 ASU head coach Herm Edwards is a miracle worker of sorts. He’s got the Sun Devils believing in themselves and they beat 15th ranked Cal 24-17 and have improved to 4-1.

#3 It’s been an improved year for Cal in spite of the loss to ASU, they lost by a touchdown, and this season, what improvements that the Bears have done have been the most impressive?

#4 It was a game that saw the score tied after each of the three quarters. The Bears had home field, was it a matter of time ran out for Cal or ASU looked like they would squeak this one out?

#5 Cal now heads to Oregon to face the Ducks, who defeated Stanford in their last 21-6. The Ducks have Justin Herbert at quarterback who threw 19-24 for 259 yards and three touchdowns, Herbert and the Ducks could be a handful next Saturday?

Cal Bears Saturday game recap: Electrifying win for Cal 20-19 at UW; 1250 lighting strikes delays game for 2 1/2 hours

1250 lighting strikes was all it took to hold up the second game of the season between the visiting Cal Bears and the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium in Seattle on Saturday night. The 2 1/2 hour delay restarted the first quarter of play around 10:30pm and the game ended around 1:30 am. The Huskies had a 14-point spread coming into the contest, but with 15% of the crowd staying after the delay, the Bears were able to take advantage of a quieter stadium and edged the Huskies 22-21.

The loss marked the end to the Huskies’ 15-home game win streak. The Bears put the ball through the uprights for the win and a 17-yard field goal for the one point winner. Earlier with the Huskies up 19-17 with just second to the two minute warning Patrick Henry booted a 49 yard field goal. The Bears got that second wind and answered back marching the ball to the Washington 17 and with eight seconds left got the game-winning field goal from Greg Thomas for the win.

Husky Stadium is a house of horrors. No team has won there in 15 straight home games, and for the Huskies, it was a set of different circumstances with the lighting and mother nature taking the crowd out of it and that it all changed. It was a see-saw game to begin with. In the second quarter at 14:57, the Huskies kicker Patrick Henry kicked a 36-yarder to put Washington on the scoreboard 3-0. At 7:59 Salvon Amhed rushed for 21 yards to put UW on top 10-0.

The Bears got on the scoreboard with a field goal from Thomas that made it 10-3 Washington at 3:43. In the third quarter, the Bears Marcel Duncy would score twice. He rushed for a 20 yards at 11:56 to tie the game up at 10-10. At 5:50, Patrick Henry booted a 21-yard field goal that put the Huskies back on top 13-10. Still, in the third quarter, Duncy got the ball for an eight-yard rush to get Cal back on top with 50 seconds left in the quarter for a 17-13 lead.

In fourth quarter action, the Huskies’ Henry kicked a 25-yarder at 7:10 to make it a 17-16 contest and the Huskies regained the lead 19-17 at 2:09 when Henry booted a 49-yard field goal. It was all for naught as the Bears quickly marched down field with under two minutes left in the game and got in field goal position for Thomas to boot the game winner for a 20-19 victory with eight seconds left in the game.

The Bears quarterback Chase Garber threw for 111 yards and the Huskies quarterback Jason Eason threw for 162 yards and one interception.

#1 For the Cal Bears, getting a victory on opening day last Saturday was an important way to start the 2019 season with a win over UC Davis at Memorial Stadium and what a way to start with running back Christopher Brown Jr. rushing for 197 yards to help lead the team to a 27-13 win.

#2 The Stanford Cardinal defeated Northwestern, but the Cardinal lost their starting quarterback during the game when KJ Costello took a forearm to the head. The Cardinal hung onto win it 17-7. Costello could muster only one strong drive before the injury. The Cardinal are on the road next week to face the USC Trojans next Saturday.

#3 The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo took Thursday Night Football off last week and the 49ers went with three quarterbacks: Nick Mullins, CJ Beathard, and Nick Speight. Speight and Beathard both saw the most time in the game with Mullens resting. Is that an indication that Nick Mullens, who saw limited time will be the backup, and head coach Kyle Shanahan wants to see if Beathard or Speight will fill the third-string spot?

#4 The Oakland Raiders look as if they had a very solid preseason winning three of their four games. Raider head coach Jon Gruden said he’s happy with the progress of backup quarterbacks Nathan Peterman (out with elbow injury) and Mike Glennon who he’ll really depend on if starting quarterback Derek Carr ever needs a rest.

#5 The Oakland A’s are hosting the LA Angels and Detroit Tigers this week at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s are 1/2 game back in the AL wild card behind second place Cleveland. It could go right down to the wire for a chance of a wild card birth.

#1 The Golden State Warriors say that Stephen Curry is day to day after he rolled his ankle in New Orleans on Tuesday night. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr says that Curry should be back by the first game of the NBA playoffs.

#2 Sacramento Kings fired head coach Dave Joerger Thursday after three losing seasons. The firing most likely will be an open door for Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton to take over the coaching job in Sacramento. Wednesday was the last day of the regular season for the Sacramento Kings. They grew, they had won 12 more games than last season, and they have a core of players that are much improved over last season. Tony tells us what the Kings will do to get a viable shot at the playoffs for next season.

#3 It was kind of historical in Boston on Tuesday night when members of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots made an appearance on the field before the Sox ball game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park. Both teams were showing their Championship trophies as both teams won Championships in the first year.

#4 Two players from Bay Area schools were drafted on Wednesday by the WNBA. From Cal, Kristine Anigwe, who was named Defensive Player of the Year, and from the Stanford Cardinal, Alanna Smith. It has to be a pretty big honor for these players to get to the next level and play in the WNBA.

#5 The A’s won another series this time over the Baltimore Orioles on this current road trip after getting swept in Houston by the Astros to start the trip. The A’s defeated the O’s in the four game series and head to Texas to open a three game series with the Rangers starting on Friday night.

Cal Bears BB new head coach: Fox could be that silver lining that Cal hoops is looking for

BERKELEY — Cal’s Athletic Director Jim Knowlton’s hiring of Mark Fox called the hiring “a man of unparalleled integrity with a proven record of success as a head basketball coach.”

After the firing of former head coach Wyking Jones last Sunday Knowlton wanted to hire someone as quickly as possible and put last season in the rearview mirror. The Bears didn’t win a Pac 12 game until they won their last three games of the regular season. Jones and the Bears had a 16 game losing streak during last season.

Fox come in from Georgia University with five tournaments while coaching in the last 14 seasons at the University of Nevada and Georgia compiling a 286-176. Knowlton said that the hiring pool had many candidates and said that Fox is exceptional and he was a good choice what direction Cal wants to go.

The Bears were thought to have former Cal player and NBA standout Jason Kidd ending up coming back to Cal and coach the team. Kidd is currently working on getting his degree and Kidd said that he wanted to coach in the NBA.

Fox is 50 did not coach last season after getting fired from Georgia where he did pick up two NCAA Tournaments. It was at Nevada where he coached the team to the Tournament three times and compiling a 123-43 record in five years.

Fox was an assistant coach to Jeff Van Gundy on the US World qualifying team and assisted on the Milwaukee Bucks summer league. Fox got to coach with some of the greats Geno Auriemma, Gregg Popovich and Brad Stevens during last season.

Knowlton is confident that Fox can get the program going again and Fox said that he’s confident that the Cal academic program is an amazing opportunity and said he appreciates Knowlton and Cal Chancellor Christ giving him opportunity and looks forward to getting to work.

#1 March Madness is in full tilt: Bears vs. Bears and the Cal women (20-13) lost a tough one at Baylor (33-1) 102-63. It was Cal’s hopes to get this one at Baylor it was too much Baylor who ran off 39 points on Cal. The Lady Bears have had an awesome year.

#2 Duke’s Zion Williamson got a crucial basket on Sunday to help beat Central Florida 77-76 by just that much.

#3 Talk about the Stanford Cardinal women (30-4) and visiting BYU (29-5). This has been another unforgettable season for both teams, who shared identical records before Monday night’s game. Stanford who had the home floor advantage made it pay off with a 72-63 win to advance.

#4 Turning to baseball, the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants concluded their Bay Bridge series to conclude the exhibition season. The A’s will continue their regular season on Thursday afternoon at the Coliseum.

#5 The Giants open their regular season against Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres on Thursday at Petco Park.

Cal basketball parts ways with coach Wyking Jones after two seasons

BERKELEY — Cal has fired coach Wyking Jones following two, historically subpar seasons that landed the Bears in the Pac-12 basement twice.

Jones was 8-24 last season, and 8-23 this season, the two worst, consecutive seasons in the program’s history. Reports surfaced over the weekend that the athletic department had decided to retain Jones for a third season, but athletic director Jim Knowlton opted for the dismissal supposedly after meeting with the team’s players over the weekend.

“This was a difficult decision to make and comes after a deliberate and holistic review of our men’s basketball program. As always, we were guided by the best interests of our student-athletes, as well as the values and objectives of Cal Athletics and our University. As we quickly turn toward our search for a new head coach for our men’s basketball program, I am certain that we will attract a strong, talented and highly qualified pool of candidates. I am confident that we will find someone who will help lead us on a path to being exceptional.”

A pool of potential successors has emerged, including 2019 NCAA tournament coaches Russell Turner of UC Irvine and Eric Musselman of Nevada. Cal legend Jason Kidd is also a candidate despite his well-known interest in resuming his NBA coaching career.

Jones was fired after completing just two of the five years on his contract, and will receive $3 million to satisfy that deal.
