A’s swept by Red Sox; Oakland loses 4-3 Sunday in Boston

The Oakland Athletics concluded their series against the Boston Red Sox with a series finale on Sunday. The A’s looked to avoid a sweep against the Red Sox but dropped a close game 4-3 at Fenway Park. Oakland (25-67) lost four games in a row, while Boston (48-43) won its fifth straight game.

The A’s starting lineup featured Tony Kemp, Ryan Noda, Seth Brown, Brent Rooker, JJ Bleday, Cody Thomas, Manny Piña, Jace Peterson, Tyler Wade, and JP Sears. Sears pitched five innings and gave up one hit, one run, three walks, and four strikeouts before leaving the mound.

The A’s got on the scoreboard first, thanks to a wild pitch by Tayler Scott off a throwing error by Jorge Alfaro. Noda scored for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Red Sox tied the ballgame in the bottom of the first inning. Adam Duvall was out on a sacrifice fly to Cody Thomas. Rob Refsnyder scored to make it a 1-1 tie with two outs.

The A’s took their first lead of the game in the top of the second inning. Noda walked, and Jace Peterson scored for a 2-1 lead. Wade went to third base, while Kemp went to second base.

The A’s extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning. Rooker homered on a fly ball to left field for a 3-1 lead.

The Red Sox got even in the bottom of the sixth inning. Duvall homered on a fly ball to left center field to make it a one-run game. Christian Arroyo doubled on a sharp line drive to Cody Thomas. Masataka Yoshida scored to tie the game 3-3.

The Red Sox took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Masataka Yoshida homered on a fly ball to left field for a 4-3 lead.

A’s prospect catcher Tyler Sodestrom singled up the middle in the bottom of the second inning of the 2023 All-Stars Futures Game at T-Mobile Park on Saturday.

A’s Lose 10-3 to Red Sox; Boston gets an early jump on A’s in early going

The Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox faced off in a middle game Saturday. The A’s looked to stop their three-game losing streak, but they didn’t because they lost 10-3 to the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Oakland fell to 25-66, while Boston improved to 47-43.

The A’s starting lineup featured Nick Allen, Jordan Diaz, Ryan Noda, Brent Rooker, Aledmys Díaz, JJ Bleday, Shea Langaliers, Manny Piña, Cody Thomas, and Austin Pruitt. Pruitt entered the game after Paul Blackburn was scratched due to an undisclosed illness but pitched just 1.2 innings and gave up four hits, four earned runs, and one home run. In addition, Pruitt (1-6) took the loss.

The Red Sox took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Turner singled on a line drive to Rooker. Duran scored for a 1-0 lead. Alex Verdugo homered on a fly ball to left field. Turner scored for a 3-0 lead. The umpire reviewed Verdugo’s play for a home run, but the call on the field was upheld.

The Red Sox extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Duran homered on a fly ball to left center field. Connor Wong scored for a 5-0 lead.

The A’s finally got on the board in the top of the third inning. Manny Piña homered on a fly ball to left center field to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 5-1.

The Red Sox expanded their lead in the bottom of the third inning. Connor Wong was out on a sacrifice fly to Rooker. Triston Casas scored for a 6-1 lead with one out.

The Red Sox poured in the runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Rafael Devers doubled on a sharp line drive to Rooker. Masataka Yoshida scored for a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Red Sox added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Duran hit a ground-rule double on a line drive down the right-field line. Christian Arroyo scored for an 8-1 lead. Yoshida singled on a line drive to Bleday. Duran scored for a 9-1 lead.

The A’s added one home run in the top of the sixth inning. Rooker homered on a fly ball to left-center field to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 9-2.

The Red Sox reached a double-digit lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Christian Arroyo doubled on a line drive to Rooker. Triston Casas scored for a 10-2 lead.

The A’s added one single in the top of the eighth inning. Bleday singled on a ground ball to Casas. Ryan Noda scored to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 10-3 as Aledmys Díaz went to second base.

Notes
A’s left-handed pitcher Sammy Long turned 28 on Saturday.

A’s prospect outfielder Lawrence Butler will bat fifth and start in left field in the 2023 All-Stars Futures Game at 4:00 pm Pacific at T-Mobile Park on Saturday. Meanwhile, A’s prospect catcher Tyler Sodestrom will bat seventh and start at first base.

#1 The Oakland A’s (25-65) on Friday saw the Boston Red Sox (46-43) start of the game with a five run second inning that later handed the A’s a 7-3 loss at Fenway Park.

#2 The Sox Yu Chang got a base loaded hit in the second for the Sox to drive in two runs. Chang’s contribution proved valuable to help get the Sox get a lead on the A’s early off A’s starter Sammy Long and reliever Luis Medina.

#3 What was remarkable Chang missed over three months of play due to a left broken hand. Chang didn’t waste anytime driving in the first two runs of the game.

#4 Medina who came into relieve for Long ended up giving up seven hits, four earned runs, one walk and nine strikeouts in six innings of work. A’s manager Mark Kotsay said that he brought Medina in a tough situaton.

#5 The A’s will start right hander Paul Blackburn (1-1 ERA 4.50) he’ll be opposed Red Sox starter left hander James Paxton (4-1 ERA 2.70) for a 10:10 AM PT first pitch.

A’s Lose 7-3 to Red Sox; Sox do most of the damage with 5 run second inning at Fenway

The Oakland Athletics’ last series of their road trip was at the Boston Red Sox. The A’s began a three-game series against the Red Sox on Friday night. The A’s lost 7-3 to the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Oakland fell to 25-65, while Boston improved to 46-43.

The A’s starting lineup featured Tony Kemp, Jordan Diaz, Ryan Noda, Brent Rooker, JJ Bleday, Jace Peterson, Shea Langaliers, Seth Brown, Tyler Wade, and Sam Long. Long pitched just one inning and gave up three hits, three earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.

After a scoreless first inning, Boston opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Yu Chang singled on a ground ball to JJ Bleday. Alex Verdugo and Enrique Hernandez scored for a 2-0 lead as Triston Casas went to second base. Jarren Duran singled on a ground ball to Tony Kemp.

Casas scored for a 3-0 lead as Chang went to third base. Justin Turner singled on a line drive to Seth Brown. Chang scored for a 4-0 lead as Duran went to third base. Rafael Devers grounded into a forceout fielded by Tyler Wade. Duran scored for a 5-0 lead as Turner was out at second base, while Devers went to first base with two outs.

The A’s finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Tony Kemp singled on a ground ball to Rafael Devers. Seth Brown scored to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 5-1. Tyler Wade went to third base while Kemp went to second base. Devers committed a throwing error.

The A’s inched closer to the Red Sox in the top of the seventh inning. Seth Brown homered on a fly ball to right center field. Shea Langaliers scored to cut the Red Sox’s lead to 5-3.

The A’s chances of a comeback were short-lived as the Red Sox scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Adam Duvall singled on a ground ball to Tyler Wade. Jarren Duran scored for a 6-3 lead as Rafael Devers went to third base. Alex Verdugo singled on a line drive to Brent Rooker. Devers scored for a 7-3 lead as Duvall went to second base.

A’s LHP Richard Lovelady turned 27 on July 7.

The A’s recalled RHP Angel Felipe from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The A’s selected OF Cody Thomas from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The A’s placed OF Esteury Ruiz on the ten-day injured list retroactive to July 6.

The A’s optioned and designated RHP Rico Garcia for assignment.

#1 The Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez is hitting at a .400 clip if he finishes the season at .400 he would be the first player to hit .400 or over since former Boston Red Sox Ted Williams did it in 1941.

#2 The San Francisco Giants and the St Louis Cardinals will play a regular season game at Rickwood Field in Fairfield Alabama in 2024. The game will be a tribute to Willie Mays who broke in with the Birmingham Barons some 75 years ago.

#3 The Boston Red Sox Tanner Houck took a come backer to the face on Monday night as New York Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka hit a 89.7 MPH pitch that struck Houck in the face that caused him to bleed out. Houck was able to walk off the field under his own power. Houck is listed as out indefinitely with a facial fracture.

#4 The Boston Red Sox who are last place in the AL East are showing interest in the Oakland A’s who are in last place infielder Aledmys Diaz. Diaz is in the first year of his two year contract worth $14 million with the A’s. Diaz is hitting .212, six doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBIs for 2023. The Red Sox like his glove and he could help the club up the middle.

#5 In just three games the New York Yankees have scored just eight runs and they badly miss Aaron Judge out of the line up who out with a right toe sprain. The Yankees are 4-8 and have lost four straight games.

#1 Charlie got to ask you on question number one did Oakland A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper have a slip of the tongue or he knew what he was doing as some on social media have asserted.

#2 A fan fell into the Boston Red Sox bullpen in right field falling over the protective railing during the first inning at Citizen’s Bank Ballpark in Philadelphia. The fan was attended to by medical personnel and assisted to Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. Phillies pitcher Jose Alvarado immediately ran onto the outfield and was calling for help. Some of the players in the Red Sox bullpen thought that the fan had died they later learned that he was alive and breathing to the players relief.

#3 Former San Francisco Giant and current New York Yankee pitcher Carlos Rodon will need more time off as his back issues continue as Rondon has not pitched in one regular season game. Rondon had a great year in San Francisco last season going 14-8 ERA 2.88. Rondon signed with the Yankees in the off season for $168 million for six years.

#4 San Francisco pitcher Alex Wood is coming around and hopes to come off that left hamstring injury. Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that he feeling batter and threw a bullpen session on Saturday. Wood last pitched on Apr 18th and left in the third inning in Miami. Wood is one of the crucial pitchers in the rotation.

#5 New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is expected back in the line up against the Oakland A’s on Tuesday coming back from a hip strain. Judge has been out since Apr 27 and missed his eight games on Saturday. He worked out with minor league Tampa Bay team. The Yankees are last with ten games back of first place Tampa Bay Rays.

#6 Former Oakland A’s pitcher and San Francisco Giant NBC Sports Bay Area analyst Vida Blue passed away at age 73 on Sun May 7, 2023.

#1 Minnesota Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer was hit in the jaw by Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito who threw a 91.6 MPH pitch. Farmer was laid out and had to get help up and was able to walk with assistance to the Twins clubhouse. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said after the game Wednesday that Farmer will need to get his teeth realigned, Farmer had to have a laceration closed and was very lucky to avoid getting a broken jaw.

#2 MLB second base umpire Larry Vanover was hit in the head by a ball that was was thrown by Cleveland Guardians shortstop Andres Gimenez who intended to throw to home plate after the New York Yankees Kyle Higashioka hit it to Gimenez. Vanover was removed for the game for precautions and was taken to a local hospital for observation.

#3 A group called Big League Utah wants a big league expansion team in downtown Salt Lake City. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said that he would like to have 32 teams in the majors. Salt Lake City is one of three other cities who want an expansion team Nashville, Portland, and Charlotte. Oakland and Tampa Bay do not look like they’ll be getting stadium soon and they could be looking for a place to move to.

#4 Jessica, the Tampa Bay Rays continue to run away with it they picked up their 12th straight win against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon 9-2. The Rays remain unbeaten through 12 games. The Rays are getting the hitting, today they opened up in the bottom of the first with three runs and got good starting pitching from Rays starter Taj Bradley.

#5 The Los Angeles Angels have banned a beat writer who was on the Angels radio show “Beat Reporters Round Table.” Angels team president John Carpino wanted Athletic beat writer Sam Blum barred from coming back on the show because he was too critical of the Angels. The Angels are currently a .500 team. Carpino said that he was banned because he was too negative on the show and the show is supposed to be an upbeat program.

#1 Charlie O, it’s the tale of two teams one team the Oakland A’s are predicted to have a even rougher and tougher season than their 102 loss season and it’s not getting off to a great start either with a loses starting to mount now sitting on a 2-8 start of 2023.

#2 The other team that’s already getting lots of props the Tampa Bay Rays who have won their first ten games defeating the Red Sox in their last game at Tropicana Field Monday night. The Rays have been getting both plenty of pitching and hitting defeating the A’s last Saturday and Sunday in landslide wins 11-0.

#3 Got to ask you have impressive it is for the Rays were in good company with the 1939 New York Yankees. The Rays had a nine game win streak scoring four or more runs going and needed four games to catch the 39 Yankees who have 13 straight wins scoring four or more runs it didn’t happen as the Rays topped the Sox by a run 1-0 on Monday for their tenth straight win.

#4 The Rays also got some top notch hitting Sunday from lead off hitter Brandon Lowe with four RBIs and two runs scored, Randy Arozarena who got two hits and an RBI. The Rays simply are the talk of baseball right now with their 10-0 record.

#5 Charlie, you’ve been around minor league baseball a time or two talk about the Los Angeles Angels affiliate on Sunday the Rocket City Trash Pandas who allowed a hit in a doubleheader and came away with a split. Three Panda pitchers combined for a seven inning no hitter against the Cincinnati Reds affiliate the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday. The Pandas allowed seven runs in the top of the seventh, five walks, hit five batters, a run scoring wild pitch and a dropped fly ball with the bases loaded which would have been the final out.

#6 Atlanta catcher Travis D’Arnaud has been placed on the seven day injured list. D’Arnaud received a concussion after the San Diego Padres Rougned Odor collided with D’Arnaud at the plate in the Padres loss to the Braves 4-1 Saturday at Sun Trust Stadium in Cobb County. How much or how little did the Buster Posey rule play a part in this collision?

#1 Charlie, how much will the absence of New York Yankees starter Luis Severino impact the Yankees. Severino will miss a spring start due to lat strain. Manager Aaron Boone says it’s likely Severino could miss the start of the regular season.

#2 Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins was carted off the field on Sunday after suffering from a torn ACL and will require surgery. Hoskins went to field a Detroit Tigers Austin Meadows ground ball that skidded off Hoskins glove and went to chase down the ball as he pivoted to start the pursuit Hoskins fell to the ground grabbing his left knee.

#3 MLB withdrew an trademark application intent on having the right to use the city name of three of it’s MLB teams. One of them being the Boston Red Sox. MLB said there was a misunderstanding they didn’t want to have exclusive rights to a city name they just wanted protect the city name in association with apparel not copyrighted use of the city name.

#4 On the Howard Stern Radio Show former New York Yankees star Reggie Jackson says he cheated a lot during his playing days off the field saying he was a serial cheater. He wasn’t just Mr. October in the month of October but Reggie said he did it all the time. In the segment Stern asked Jackson if it was hard for him to open his heart to a woman with Jackson replying ““It wasn’t hard for me to open my heart, but it was hard for me to be loyal,” Jackson said. “As a man, I cheated a lot.”

#5 Charlie wanted to talk to you about a guy you covered for many years former Oakland Athletic Jed Lowrie who played three different times for the A’s and in baseball for 14 years, nine with the A’s. Lowrie said of all the teams he played for the A’s were the most special. Lowrie said the A’s let him be himself. Lowrie broke in the big leagues 2008, hit a career .257, scored 590 runs, 121 home runs, and knocked in 594 RBIs.

#1 Arizona Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner said that he was excited to pitch on July 4th and picked up a win going five innings, giving up three earned runs, five hits, three walks and four strikeouts defeating his former team the San Francisco Giants 8-3.

#2 The Diamondbacks did most of the damage in the later innings against the Giants scoring twice in the sixth and eighth innings. It was the Giants 11th loss in 14 games and fifth loss in row.

#3 In the Chicago suburb Highland a lone gunman shot and killed six and 31 wounded at a Fourth of July Parade. Many of the dead and injured were sitting in seats along the parade route. The White Sox canceled their fireworks show which was to conclude after their game against the game almost was canceled but after talking to MLB the game was played.

#4 The Chicago Cubs Wilson Contreras who slide into second base in the bottom of the seventh inning at Wrigley Field and sliced the thigh of Boston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts who required seven stitches when his cleats hit Bogaerts right outside thigh.

#5 The Los Angeles Angels promoted catcher’s coach Bill Haselman to interim interim manager. The Angels current manager is Phil Nevin and acting interim manager Ray Montgomery are serving ten and two game suspension respectively.
