Oakland A’s podcast with Joey Friedman: A’s having best run of the season; Still chipping away at first place–now 8 1/2 back

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Joey:

The A’s are on a roll, playing their best ball of the season at 8-2. They finished the homestand at 4-1–an improvement over some past homestands they’ve had this year. Friday night, the A’s will start Paul Blackburn (2-2, 6.46 ERA). Blackburn has struggled in some of his outings. A’s pitching coach Scott Emerson said Blackburn has improved in bullpen practices. Last Friday, Blackburn beat Cleveland, going 6.1 innings and didn’t allow a run.

A’s pitcher Edwin Jackson will get the start for Oakland on Saturday his third start of the year. Jackson is throwing well. He’s allowed two or less runs in his last two starts. The A’s are 8 1/2 games out of first place behind the Houston Astros and the Seattle Mariners, who just ended their eight-game win streak, are in second.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: A’s Manaea with another strong outing–no decision, but A’s win

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry:

A’s pitcher Sean Manaea had a strong performance against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday at the Oakland Coliseum. The A’s got the 4-2 win. Manaea went seven innings, two runs, and four hits. A’s manager Bob Melvin likes what Manaea has done in the number one starting role in the rotation.

The A’s continue to roll with their eighth win out of their last nine games. The A’s have won 14 of their last 17 games. The A’s are winning games when they’re behind and A’s hitter Stephen Piscotty was clutch, hitting a two-run double to put the A’s ahead of the Padres in the eighth inning.

The A’s have the day off Thursday and head onto Progressive Field for the start of a three-game series in Cleveland. The A’s will start Paul Blackburn (2-2 ERA 6.46) against Carlos Carrasco (8-5 ERA 4.24) for Cleveland.

Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O: A’s lineup delivers punch to help them get wins in crucial times

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O:

Rally caps paid off at the Oakland Coliseum on Tuesday night as the Oakland A’s got five runs in the sixth inning to beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 to start this brief two-game series. A’s pitcher Chris Bassitt didn’t pitch quite as well as he did on the last road trip (he threw a shutout), but two runs, seven hits, two runs, six hits in 4.2 innings was not a bad outing.

Jed Lowrie hit a bases loaded three-run double and picked up his 25th double of the season with 59 RBIs. Mark Canha has proven to be a tough out he’s on an 11-game hit streak and has reached base in 12 straight games.

The A’s will start pitcher Sean Manaea (8-6). The Padres have announced they’ll start Luis Perdomo (1-2).

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: How DeMarcus fits in at Golden State; Lowrie will represent A’s at All Star game

bleacherreport.com file photo: Former New Orleans Pelicans DeMarcus Cousins is signed up for one season with Golden State

On That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast:

The Golden State Warriors knew they couldn’t leave DeMarcus Cousins out all on his lonesome so Cousins made it easy for Golden State and came to them and they both came to a shocking agreement to a $5.3 million for a season. The Warriors made a move after LeBron James made signed with the Lakers over the weekend.

Kevin Durant, who has two years left on his deal with Golden State and the second year being an option year, could leave the Warriors and such a departure would be a huge impact.

Oakland A’s Baseball Company: The A’s open a two-game homestand tonight against the San Diego Padres after coming off a 15-3 loss to Cleveland Sunday after ending a six game win streak. During the streak A’s reliever Blake Treinen who has 21 saves so far this season.

It’ll be the Padres Clayton Richard 7-7 ERA 4.29 and for the A’s starter Chris Bassitt gets the call 1-3 ERA 2.82 for tonight at the Coliseum.

The winning streak continues as the A’s crush the Indians 7-2 on Saturday

OAKLAND, Calif. — The well-traveled veteran pitcher Edwin Jackson made his second start for the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, and he worked 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, while walking none to come away with his first victory in a Green and Gold uniform. Jackson’s teammates rewarded his efforts by coming from back from a 2-0 deficit to score seven runs off just eight hit to win their sixth consecutive game.

Neither starting pitcher allowed a hit or baserunner in the first three innings of the game. The Indians were the first to strike when they hit two home runs off Jackson in the top of the fourth inning. Francisco Lindor hit his 20th homer of the season into the right-field seats on a 1-1 count to lead off the inning. With one out, Jose Ramirez stepped up to the plate to face Jackson and jacked a 2-2 pitch over the center-field wall for his 24th round-tripper of 2018. Things were not looking good for Jackson at that moment.

Jackson settled down in the top of the fifth and he did not allow another baserunner in the remaining 1.2 innings he would pitch.

The A’s struck back in the home half of the sixth inning. Franklin Barreto led off with a double. Josh Phegley then hit his second home run of the year into the left field seats to tie the game at 2-2. Dustin Fowler followed up with a single through the hole at second. Mark Canha hit a line drive to left that hit at the top of the wall for a double that allowed the speedy Fowler to race home from first to score the A’s third run and give them the lead. Canha was thrown out trying to advance to third. Oakland took a lead 3-2 and would never trail in the game again.

Oakland would score four more times in the eighth inning to make the final score 7-2.

Edwin Jackson (1-0) gets credit for the win. The Indians’ starter Adam Plutko (4-2) is tagged with the loss. A’s reliever Lou Trivino picked up his third save of the season.

Oakland’s record improves to 46-38, and they are now 8.5 games behind the Astros in the AL West. The Indians fall to 44-37, but maintain an 8.0 game lead over the second-place Twins.

Melvin talks about his team after the game

In the Batter’s Box

A’s

  • Dustin Fowler snapped an 0-for-9 hitless streak with his single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hitting his fifth home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth was just icing of the cake. Fowler was the only A’s player to have multiple hits in the game.
  • Matt Olson hit his 18th home run in the home half of the eighth inning as the A’s kept adding insurance runs to their lead. He has now hit 15 of his 18 home runs off right-handed pitching.
  • Mark Canha extended his hitting streak to nine games, which is the longest streak of his career. He has also reached base safely in his last 10 games.
  • Khris Davis hit a sacrifice fly to up his RBI total to 55 for the season.
  • The A’s went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left just three runners on base.

Indians

  • Francisco Lindor is on fire. In his last 19 games, he is batting .306 (23-for-75) with six home runs, five doubles, 11 RBI and 20 runs scored.
  • Since the start of the 2017 season, Jose Ramirez leads the major leagues with 136 extra base hits. He entered the game on Saturday tied for fourth in the MLB with his teammate Francisco Lindor with 44 extra base hits so far this season.
  • Jason Kipnis has now reached base safely in each of his last 13 games. In those 13 games, he is batting .312 with three homers and eight runs scored.

On the Hill

A’s

  • Edwin Jackson still has not walked a batter since joining the A’s. He worked 6.2 innings giving up two runs (earned) off two hits (both HRs). He struck out six Cleveland hitters. Jackson threw 86 pitches (52 strikes).
  • The A’s used four relief pitchers to close out the game. Ryan Butcher, Emilio Pagan, Yusmeiro Petit and Lou Trivino worked the final 2.1 innings.
  • The plan was to have Petit close it out, but he looked a bit rusty when got up on the mound. Manager Bob Melvin said that was on him for not getting him into some games earlier in the week.

Indians

IMG_4767

  • Indians starter Adam Plutko looked brilliant in the opening three innings but the wheels came off in the sixth inning. He pitched 5.2 innings allowing three runs (earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out three.
  • The Indians used five pitchers in the contest.
  • Dan Otero and Josh Tomlin really struggled in the eighth inning when the A’s sealed the game by scoring four runs on just three hits. Two walks and two home runs were the fatal flaws for the relievers.
  • A familiar face to Bay Area baseball fans came into the game to shut down the A’s in the eighth inning, former Giant George Kontos was brought in to do the job.

Up Next

The A’s will try to complete their second consecutive series sweep on Sunday when they will close out this three-game series with the Indians. The Indians will start RHP Mike Clevinger (6-3, 3.03). The A’s will counter with RHP Frankie Montas (4-1, 3.68). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM PDT.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jerry Feitelberg: A’s shuttling players back and forth from Nashville; A’s have an offense that can be improved

On the A’s podcast with Jerry:

How do the A’s find ways to continue to replace injured players going to Nashville and back to Oakland again and still win games? They were down six runs and came back to beat the Detroit Tigers 9-7 on Tuesday night.

Jed Lowrie was key in the win with a bloop single in the ninth inning, which Lowrie would steal a base then come in and score to win it for the A’s. Lowrie’s had some great at-bats this season. The question is will the A’s trade Lowrie and get some value for him before the trade deadline in July?

Oakland A’s podcast with Charlie O: A’s turnstiles keep turning with call ups from Nashville; Can A’s get the Environmental Impact protection to expedite building a new park?

usatoday file photo: Oakland A’s Franklin Barreto is hoping to continue his hitting surge like he demonstrated over the weekend in Chicago.

On the A’s podcast with Charlie:

An incredible volume of players are going from Nashville to Oakland. The recent placement of Matt Chapman going on the D.L. and bringing up second baseman Franklin Barreto and moving Jed Lowrie to third. The A’s and many other Major League teams have been dipping into their farm systems.

Also, a look at the Environmental Impact Protection Report similar to what the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings used to build their arenas and the A’s would like to use that same statute to expedite getting in their new location and speed up ground breaking for a new park.

How practical is the idea to move the A’s Triple A affiliate Nashville and have the Sounders to maybe rename the Oakland Oaks and have them share the Coliseum with the A’s? The A’s love to save money. This might be an idea that owner John Fisher would like and team vice president Billy Beane would like to get a call ups from just calling down the hallway at the Coliseum.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A’s set new home run record at 25 straight games and Edwin Jackson to the rescue

By Amaury Pi-González

The powerful A’s now own a major-league record on Sunday in Chicago. Mark Canha hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to establish a new home run record. A streak of 25 consecutive road games with a home run. Previous modern record was set in 1996 by the Baltimore Orioles. Considering how often home runs are hit these days, it will be interesting to see how long this record last. Last season was the season of the home run, a record of 6,104.

A’s are calling up journeyman pitcher Edwin Jackson. This will be his 13th team tying a major league record. The moment Jackson wears the Green and Gold, he will tie Octavio Dotel, as one of the only two pitchers in history to have pitched for 13 different teams. You need at least three mainstays in a rotation to stay afloat, especially in this very tough AL West. This is not the NL West, this is a division with the Astros, Mariners and Angels, three teams that could be playing ball in October.

Bob Melvin is one of the best managers in the game today. The two-time Manager of the Year (2007 Arizona, 2012 Oakland) has done a terrific job with a very inconsistent rotation and like an expert chemist is trying to find the formula on a team, where the bullpen is in much better shape than the starting rotation. We know that the New York Mets’ Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom are not coming to Oakland. During the first half of the season we have seen Daniel Gossit, Paul Blackburn, Josh Lucas also taking the ball to start games. Daniel Mengden left a game this weekend in Chicago with a foot injury, so the A’s are calling up journeyman Edwin Jackson.

As of the start of the current road-trip in San Diego, there were three starters in the “rotation:” Sean Manaea, Daniel Mengden and Frankie Montás. We can take Mengden out for a while with that foot injury and see how Edwin Jackson will do with the Athletics uniform. From the start of this season, the A’s could have used a veteran pitcher, this team has an abundance of young pitchers with little experience. It seems like 10 years ago that Kendall Graveman opened this season for the A’s against the Angels on March 29th at the Oakland Coliseum.

The A’s have been playing good ball during this road trip against teams. They should be able to beat the Padres, White Sox and Tigers. These are teams that are at the bottom of their divisions. Yet in baseball, to be a contender you must beat these teams. Their road trip continues into Detroit for a four-game series prior to returning home next Friday from a weekend series against the AL Central leading Cleveland Indians and then a two-game set vs. the San Diego Padres during Independence week.

Oakland Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Carr entering his 5th season; Carr is expected to take Raiders to new heights

On the Raiders podcast with Tony R:

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is entering his fifth season for the Raiders and the Raiders hope to see Carr get off to a great start and great showing for 2018. Former head coach John Madden, who came out with “Madden 19,” and gave the overall quarterback ratings.

Of the quarterback rankings, Maddon gave Carr an 82, scoring better were just the Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rogers with 99, only fared better than the Panthers’ Cam Newton 82, the Ravens’ Joe Flacco 77 and the Rams’ Jared Goff 81.

Head coach John Gruden said he was looking forward to seeing Carr throwing to wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Amari Cooper. They could be key all season.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary podcast: FIFA has positive impact on Russian economy; A’s in San Diego to open two-game series tonight

photo from fifa.com: The Brazilians exult after scoring on Switzerland during the FIFA match in Moscow Russia during 2018 World Cup

On the podcast with Amaury:

What has it meant for the economy in Russia to have this year’s World Cup and how will it impact the Mexican, U.S., and Canadian economy for 2026. FIFA gains more interest than any other sport when the event comes up once every four years. Even non-soccer fans turn to it.

A’s open two game series in San Diego: The San Diego Padres the A’s next opponent have a similar business model to the Oakland A’s. Padres general manager AJ Preller no longer employs expensive free agents. The Padres use their farm system more, use younger players and use a few veterans.

The A’s are at .500 the 13th time this season. The A’s also will be missing Matt Chapman and Matt Joyce both on the ten day D.L. The A’s will start Paul Blackburn tonight. In his last start Blackburn got lit up by the Houston Astros at the Oakland Coliseum going 1 1/3 innings and giving up eight runs.
