A’s Come From Behind For a Second Time In Series to Beat Orioles 7-6

By Barbara Mason

For the second time in the Oakland A’s (12-17) series with the division leading Baltimore Orioles (17-10), the A’s came from behind to win not only the game but the series. Baltimore is a very tough customer leading the American League East division.

The hero in this game was Kyle McCann who hit a two-run home run to take the lead 7-6 which was the final. Oakland pitcher Lucas Erceg had a blistering ninth inning to close out the game.

Game recap: Oakland’s Seth Brown hit a home run in the second inning of this game to give the A’s the lead 1-0. Baltimore answered right back with not one but two runs in the second taking a 2-1 lead. The Oriole’s Anthony Santander and Cedric Miller both scored.

The third inning really showed the A’s road-trip renegade mentality as Oakland brought home three runners to take a 4-2 lead. There would be no repeat of yesterday game for the A’s. These guys are real fighters as they battled from behind once again.

JJ Bleday doubled Lawrence Butler home to tie up this game 2-2 with Brent Rooker batting next. Rooker singled driving two runners, Tyler Nevin and JJ Bleday both home taking a 4-2 lead and the A’s were back on top.

Once again the Orioles answered back, this time with two home runs taking back the lead in this battle. Adley Rutschman hit a solo shot and Ryan Mountcastle slugged a two run homer for a 5-4 lead.

Baltimore extended their lead in the fourth inning with a Ramon Urias home run now leading 6-4. The three home runs from Baltimore in the third and fourth innings signaled the end of Paul Blackburn’s time on the mound. All six Oriole runs came off Blackburn whose four innings of work was the shortest of the season for him.

The fifth and sixth innings was quiet offensively for both teams. Oakland hit their first home run of the game in the seventh inning off the bat of Tyler Nevin trailing by a single run 6-5. The A’s were unable to challenge in the eighth but they came alive in the final countdown, the ninth inning. Kyle McCann hit a two-run home run taking a 7-6 lead. Darell Hernaiz had walked and McCann did the rest.

Lucas Erceg took over on the mound in the ninth looking to close out this game. The Baltimore first at bat in the ninth was a punch out, followed by a line out and a second strike out and that was the ball game. The A’s had come from behind in the ninth for a second time in this series. The final was 7-6.

Paul Blackburn went four innings in this game allowing seven hits and six runs with five strikeouts. Oakland relief pitching was exceptional and went the distance setting this win up for Lucas Erceg who closed out the game. The A’s had ten hits in the game and Baltimore had nine.

Game notes: Sunday afternoon the A’s finished up their series with the Orioles. Saturday, Oakland was stomped to the tune of 7-0 and they won this game and took the series against a very tough American League East opponent. Baltimore is in first place in this division and the win over them was sweet indeed for Oakland. Paul Blackburn started for Oakland and Albert Suarez started for the Orioles in a game that was decided by two Oakland runs in the top of the ninth.

After a very long road trip, Oakland will return home for a lengthy home stand. They will begin a three game series on Monday taking on the Pittsburg Pirates. Joe Boyle will take the mound for the A’s and Bailey Falter will start for the Pirates. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM.

Headline Sports podcast with Bruce Magowan: Taking a look at baseball’s legendary pitchers; Astros and White Sox continue to struggle; plus more

Former San Francisco Giant pitcher Juan Marichal into his wind up was a six time 20 game winner for the Giants (photo from ebay)

On Headline Sports podcast with Bruce:

#1 Bruce, you’ve been covering baseball for decades you’ve got to see some Hall of Fame pitchers Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, and Juan Marichal talk about what it was like to see those legends like.

#2 Marichal missed winning the Cy Young Award in 1968 because Bob Gibson had a better ERA that season

#3 What happened to the Houston Astros, dead last in the American League West 9-19. They’ve fallen on hard times since Dusty Baker left.

#4 The Chicago White Sox are also on hard times at 6-22 last in the AL Central what led to their implosion?

#5 The Oakland A’s have come on lately. They’ve just completed a ten game road trip and got swept by the Cleveland Guardians to start the trip, they split a four game series with the New York Yankees, and won a series against the first place Baltimore Orioles. Is this run for keeps or is it a fluke?

Headline Sports podcast with Charlie O: Angels Rendon back on IL with hamstring injury; Orioles top prospect sent down after hitting .059; plus more news

Los Angeles Angeles Anthony Rendon (6) walks off the field with manager Ron Washington (left) and trainer Mike Frostad (right) after pulling up injured with a torn left hamstring against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Sat Apr 20, 2024. Rendon was placed on the 10 day IL.

On Headline Sports podcast with Charlie O:

#1 Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon who has played only not more than 58 in his last four seasons of his current seven year $245 million contract has a left hamstring tear and the recovery is expected to be a long one. Rendon is frustrated by the injury saying he’s doing everything to stay out there but says nothing is working.

#2 The Baltimore Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday has been optioned to the Orioles minor triple A affiliate Nashville after managing just two singles, two walks in 36 at bats spread over ten games. Holliday struck out 18 times and was hitting .059 with just one RBI.

#3 The Orioles were just stunned when they were beat in the opening game of their three game series on Friday night by the Oakland A’s 3-2. The A’s had beat the New York Yankees Thursday. That showed shades of maybe Oakland might be up for challenging some of the tougher teams in the American League. Then on Saturday the Orioles got some clutch hitting and pitching shutting down Oakland 5-0.

#4 Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani who was greeted by a thunderous rain of boos at Rogers Centre in Toronto and did what he could only do hitting his seventh home run against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ohtani said he was not surprised and that he got booed in the dugout too. Dave Roberts Dodgers manager said that was funny too. Ohtani knew he was booed after deciding to sign with the Dodgers rather than the Blue Jays in the off season.

#5 Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge why the slump? Judge is hitting .186 with four home runs and the topper was the loss to the A’s on Thursday and Judge earned the golden sombrero with his fourth strike out. Judge said that he’s had worse starts than this one and that you just have to keep on working.

A’s Squashed By Orioles in Game Two 7-0; A’s Sears touched up for 8 hits, 7 earned runs by O’s

Oakland A’s pitcher JP Sears got knocked around by the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Sat Apr 27, 2024 in game 2 of the three game series (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

Game two in the Oakland A’s (11-16) three game series with the Baltimore Orioles (16-9) was a rocky one. The A’s could not get their offense going. They fell behind in the fourth inning and never recovered. Former A’s pitcher Cole Irvin pitched a great game for the Orioles. He went 7 innings allowing 7 hits, no runs with 5 strikeouts in the 7-0 Baltimore win.

Game recap: The game was scoreless through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, the Orioles unleashed the beginning of a string of uncontested runs. They scored three runs with Gunnar Henderson hitting a single to start the barrage.

Anthony Santander doubled Henderson home for their first run of the game 1-0. Jordan Westburg singled Santander home advancing their lead to 2-0. Then James McCann singled, Westburg crossed home plate and Baltimore had a very productive fourth inning leading 3-0.

The A’s went into the fifth inning looking for some offense that resulted in an Abraham Toro single but not much else. Baltimore scored twice in the fifth inning showing up big in this game. The Orioles hit a couple of solo home runs in the inning off the bats of Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle. The Orioles had broken this game open in the fourth inning and continued to add on in the fifth leading 5-0.

JP Sears was relieved in the seventh innings by Michael Kelly. Sears allowed 8 hits, 7 runs with 8 strikeouts. When Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning that was it for Sears. Kelly came in to relieve him allowing one hit and no runs.

The Orioles finished off this game in the seventh inning with the Henderson two run homer winning the game 7-0 to tie up this series Henderson was elite for Baltimore in this game finishing with two hits, two runs, two RBI’s and the two-run homer. The Orioles had three home runs in the game.

This was the first time that the A’s didn’t have a home run in 12 games. Oakland had five hits that were scattered throughout the game. They could not get any back-to-back hits going which really hurt them.

Game notes: Saturday late afternoon the A’s took on the Orioles in game two of their three game series. The A’s won a come-from-behind game Friday in the 10th inning 3-2. They fought for the win and came away victorious. They were looking for their third win a row this afternoon but got rocked by the Orioles 7-0 on Saturday. JP Sears started for the A’s and gave up eight hits and seven runs and the former A’s pitcher now Orioles starter Cole Irvin started and went seven innings giving up four hits and didn’t give up a run.

After a rough game two, the A’s will try to recover in game three on Sunday. They need to shake off the loss and move forward looking to not only win game three but to also win the series.

Oakland will send Paul Blackburn to the mound in game three. He has been having a terrific season with a (2-1, 2.03 ERA). He has been great this season keeping batters off-balance and will certainly be challenged by the Baltimore offense. Blackburn will be looking to get his team back on track. Baltimore will start Albert Suarez (1-0 ERA 0.00). First pitch for this game is scheduled for 10:35 AM.

A’s Win In Tenth Inning Beating Orioles 3-2; Rooker gets go ahead double for gamer in extras

Oakland A’s catcher Shea Langeliers (left) congratulates closer Mason Miller after retiring the Baltimore Orioles in the bottom of the tenth at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Fri Apr 26, 2024 (AP News photo)

By Barbara Mason

In yet another electric performance on the mound Mason Miller finished off this game in the tenth inning for the 3-2 Oakland A’s (11-16) win over the first place Baltimore Orioles (16-9) at Camden Yards. The A’s now are three games off the pace in the American League West. This young team has been incredibly competitive lately. They did have the bases loaded in the ninth inning but got the job done in the tenth. In this game the team put together some at-bats in a great outing.

Game recap: Oakland took the early lead 1-0 in first inning when Shea Langeliers hit a solo home run. Baltimore tied up the game in the third inning 1-1. Ryan OHearn singled Gunnar Henderson home for the tie. Baltimore would take the lead in the fourth inning when Cedric Mullins homered to right and the 2-1 score would hold going into the top of the ninth inning.

Oakland pitcher Ross Stripling went 5.2 innings allowing 6 hits, 2 runs with 3 strikeouts. Going into the ninth inning, the Orioles had not gotten another hit in the game. TJ McFarland relieved Stripling for less than an inning and Mitch Spence would take over on the mound in the seventh inning going through the ninth inning.

With two runners on base and no outs in the ninth inning the A’s tied up the game 2-2. Abraham Toro doubled Brent Rooker home. There was a tight play at home plate and for the moment Oakland had a 3-2 lead but after review, JJ Bleday was called out and the tie remained.

With one out, Oakland had the bases loaded when both Darell Hernaiz and Lawrence Butler walked and the A’s were 90 feet from the lead. Ryan Noda came to the plate with two outs. Noda popped out and the A’s missed a golden opportunity leaving three runners stranded. The A’s Mitch Spence had a perfect ninth inning with three up and three down and this game went into extra innings.

In the tenth inning Shea Langeliers grounded into a fielder’s choice to third and Ryan Noda was out. With two outs Brent Rooker doubled Langeliers home and the A’s had taken the lead 3-2 and there would be no review on this one.

JJ Bleday struck out for the third out and Oakland was three outs away from a win in the first game of this series. Mason Miller would take the mound looking to try and lock this game down. It was three up and three down for Miller finishing the game with a 102 mph bullet and Oakland had won the game 3-2. This was Miller’s seventh save of the season.

Oakland finished the game with seven hits and the A’s bullpen kept the Baltimore offense at bay only allowing the six hits.

Game notes: Friday evening the A’s traveled from New York to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. Oakland is coming off a very nice competitive series against the New York Yankees. The A’s split the series with New York winning the first and fourth game of the series. Game two in that series was a 4-3 score and was anybody’s game but it went to the Yankees.

The A’s got some great pitching and saw quite a few home runs in that series. Friday night, A’s pitcher Ross Stripling went 5.2 innings gave up six hits and two runs and the Orioles Corbin Burnes went six innings giving up three hits and one earned run to open Friday’s series. The Orioles are in second place in a very tough AL East division.

Game Two against the Orioles will get underway Saturday . First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM. JP Sears will take the mound for Oakland with a (1-1, 3.38 ERA). Cole Irvin will get the nod for Baltimore with a (1-1, 4.64 ERA).

The Arizona Diamondbacks Corbin Carroll scores a run against the Los Angeles Dodgers and catcher Will Smith in the top of the first inning at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles in game 2 of the NLDS on Mon Oct 9, 2023. The Diamondbacks have a 2-0 lead in the series as of Wed Oct 11, 2023 (AP News photo)

MLB The Show Post Season podcast with Jerry Feitelberg:

#1 Augie, are the Dodgers done? They are in a 0-2 hole against the Arizona Diamondbacks and are down to their last strike. The Dodgers were the favorites to start the series but who would have expected game 1 with the Diamondbacks greeting the Dodgers with a six run first inning and blowing them out 11-3 not to mention taking game 2 of the NLDS. Both clubs are giving it a go as we record this podcast.

#2 The Texas Rangers took the Baltimore Orioles in three straight games. Critics look to Rangers manager Bruce Bochy for much of the credit in getting the Rangers to the next round of the playoffs.

#3 Bochy had everything working for him in the ALDS against the Orioles. In game three he had the pitching working giving up only one run and the Rangers offense poured it on with a 7-1 win.

#4 Bryce Harper and the Philadelphia Phillies came into this series well prepared and almost took a 2-0 series lead into game 3. The Atlanta Braves are not to be counted out at anytime as the Phillies found out in game 2 as they came back and held onto a 5-4 win to tie the series at 1-1. Augie do the Braves have anymore fight in them left in this series now down 1-2 after losing game 3 on Wednesday in a laugher 10-2.

#5 Astros and Twins tonight at Target Field in Minneapolis the Twins need this one badly as they are down 2-1 and it’s the elimination game. The Astros can make quick work of the Twins they’ve won by scores of 6-4 and 9-1 in games 1 and 3. Talk about tonight’s game 4.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast: Orioles backs on the wall down 0-2 in ALDS; One bad game won’t make or break LA’s Kershaw; plus more news

The Texas Rangers Josh Jung (right) scores in front of Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman (left) in the top of the second inning at Camden Yards in Baltimore in game 2 of the ALDS on Sun Oct 8, 2023 (AP News photo)

On That’s Amaury News and Commentary podcast:

#1 The Baltimore Orioles find themselves in fix down 0-2 in their ALDS series with the Texas Rangers. The O’s lost to the Rangers in game 1 by a run 3-2 and then game 2 lots of runs scored but lost by four 11-8 and now they head to Texas for games 3 and 4. The Orioles had a good regular season but they seem to be hitting a wall about now.

#2 For the Los Angeles Dodgers in game 1 of the NLDS who would have thought that starter Clayton Kershaw would have got lit up the way he did in the top of the first inning by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Kershaw gave up six runs in the first inning, he got his first out after giving up five runs, and didn’t get out of the first inning before being lifted. It’s getting tougher for the Dodgers losing on Monday 4-2 down 0-2 but these are the Dodgers they could come back and maybe even this thing up.

#3 Corbin Carroll has been that big spark plug in the Diamondbacks line up and he gave them some punch in game one against the Dodgers. Carroll went two for five, scored two runs, had two hits and two RBIs and one of the runs scored he hit a home run.

#4 The Boston Red Sox fired their pitching coach Dave Bush and third base coach Carlos Febles on Monday. Bush had been pitching coach since 2020. The firing came after the Sox had posted a 4.52 ERA which was 21st in the Majors. The Sox finishing third place in the four of the last three years didn’t help matters any for Bush. Febles who is also an infield instructor was fired after the Sox posted last place above average in outs.

#5 According to Redfin projections 5,000 people moved out of Los Angeles to Las Vegas after the summer. The number dropped from August when 6800 people left the Southland to come move to Las Vegas. According to the report Las Vegas is the top city people are moving to from the Southland. Las Vegas is second city in the country where people are moving to behind Sacramento.

Rondon pitching against the Kansas City Royals threw zero innings, 35 pitches without getting an out, giving up eight eight earned runs and six hits.
