Raiders take on Cardinals in the desert on Thursday

Looking to build off their victory over the Los Angeles Rams at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum last Saturday night in both team’s first exhibition game, the Raiders will travel for the first time in 2019 to Glendale to take on the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday at State Farm Stadium.

Kickoff for this exhibition game will be at 5:00 p.m. PDT, and can be seen nationally on ESPN.

Last week, the Raiders (1-0) defeated the visiting Rams, 14-3, as both teams held out many of its starters including quarterbacks Derek Carr and Jared Goff, respectively and opted to play younger guys and backups.

With Carr on the sideline wearing team issued sweats, Oakland started seven-year veteran Mike Glennon in the first-half, while letting third-year player Nathan Peterman handle the second-half to do battle for the QB2 position behind Carr.

Glennon completed 17-of-25 passes for 200 yards, but threw two interceptions, including one inside the red zone shortly before halftime.

Glennon did lead Oakland to their first touchdown of the exhibition season on the team’s first drive, which culminated in a 7-yard rushing touchdown by backup running back DeAndre Washington.

In the six drives that Glennon led Oakland’s offense: one led to a touchdown, two ended in interceptions and three ended in punts.

Albeit it was the first exhibition game for Glennon, he didn’t show that he was ready to be QB2 behind Carr.

Peterman played decent, but didn’t set the world on fire with his play.

Outside of the 50-yard scramble that setup Oakland’s second score of the game, Peterman was purely pedestrian. On the scoring drive, Peterman was flushed out of the pocket on third-and-4 from Oakland’s own 42-yard line before sliding down at the Rams’ 8-yard line.

Two plays later, Peterman threw a 3-yard touchdown to Alameda High School and UC Davis product Keelan Doss for a 14-3 lead that the Raiders never surrendered.

“He can run,” Oakland coach Jon Gruden said during his postgame press conference. “As he continues to gain command of the offense he’s going to be an interesting guy to watch.”

“It was a super clean pocket and I was able to get out to my left.” Peterman said. “Took off and I was about to slide then noticed that there was nobody else there. I think it was because of guys blocking downfield, guys making big plays for me. Tried to get in there, didn’t quite make it.”

Typically, the second exhibition game is usually when we get to see more of the projected starting lineup. So don’t be surprised if Carr starts the game and plays 2-3 series before giving way to Glennon and Peterman.

Defensively, the Raiders didn’t have that much to write home about but, second-year defensive end Arden Key played well. Key recorded a sack and two hurries. Oakland had one of the worse pass rushes in the league last season, finishing last in sacks with just 13.

Arizona (1-0) defeated the Los Angeles Chargers, 17-13, at State Farm Stadium.

Rookie quarterback Kyler Murray, who the Cardinals drafted No. 1 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, made his pro debut against the Chargers and looked smooth. Murray completed 6-of-7 passes for 44 yards, his longest completion was a 14-yard short pass to star running back David Johnson.

The 2018 Heiseman Trophy winner is slated to be Arizona’s starter in Week 1 when the Cardinals host the Detroit Lions, so the Cardinals played it safe with its new franchise quarterback who only played one series on the night.

“I was just going out there and being myself, like always. Trusting in my abilities,” Murray said after the game. “I wanted to score. I wanted to go back in. I was definitely itching for more.”

Backup quarterback Brett Hundley saw most of the action following Murray’s exit, completed 10-of-14 passes for 104 yards and a 22-yard touchdown pass to second-year wide receiver Trent Sherfield in the second quarter.

A 35-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson with time expiring in the fourth quarter lifted the Oakland Raiders to a 23-21 come-from-behind win over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday in an interconference game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

With 5:02 to play in the fourth, the Cardinals (2-8) surged ahead 21-20 on a 5-yard touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Josh Rosen to veteran Larry Fitzgerald.

In the third quarter, Oakland (2-8) snapped a 14-14 halftime deadlock on 49- and 21-yard field goals by Carlson.

The Raiders opened the scoring at 12:36 of the first quarter when Derek Carr found Jared Cook for a 23-yard touchdown. Arizona tied the game six minutes later when Fitzgerald snared an 18-yard scoring pass from Rosen.

Rosen’s 59-yard TD pass to Christian Kirk gave the Cardinals a 14-7 lead with :16 to go in the first quarter. Oakland tied the game at 8:20 on Carr’s 5-yard scoring pass to Brandon LaFell.

David Johnson led Arizona with a game-high 137 rushing yards on 25 carries, including a run of 53 yards. Kirk caught three passes for 77 yards, and both of Fitzgerald’s receptions went for touchdowns.

Rosen completed 9 of 20 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns, was picked off once and sacked once.

Carr completed 19 of 31 passes for 192 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked four times.

Oakland is 24th in team rushing yards and did little to change that. Jalen Richard led the Raider ballcarriers with 61 rushing yards on 11 carries, followed by Doug Martin with 52 yards on 10 attempts.

Seven different Raiders caught passes from Carr – Marcell Aleman and Seth Roberts each caught four, Richard and Cook each had three receptions, LaFell and Lee Smith each grabbed two passes and Martin had one. Aleman led Oakland with 50 reception yards.

Defensively for Oakland, Tahir Whitehead seven total tackles, Karl Joseph had an interception, and Maurice Hurst recorded a sack.

Next week, the Raiders travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens. Kickoff is at 10 a.m. PST.

Raiders travel to Arizona for a Week 11 matchup with the Cardinals

OAKLAND — The Raiders hit the road for Week 11 as they will travel to the desert to face the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, November 18. Kickoff is set for 1:05 p.m.  PT. Oakland and Arizona have rarely played each other during the regular season as this is just the 10th meeting between these two clubs, with the Raiders holding a 5-4 edge over the Cardinals all-time.

However, the Cardinals are riding a two-game winning streak over the Raiders, winning the last regular season meeting, 24-13 in 2014 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and by a closer margin, 24-23 in 2010, which is the last time the Raiders traveled to Arizona.

Last week, the Raiders fell to the Los Angeles Chargers 20-6 in Week 10 at home. The loss, was Oakland’s fifth in a row dropping the Silver and Black to 1-8 on the season, the third-worst start in franchise history. Only the team’s 0-13 start in 1962 and the 0-10 start in 2014 have been worse, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw for 243 yards on 24-of-37 attempts in the contest, surpassing 17,000 passing yards for his career. Carr became just the third quarterback in franchise history to throw for 17,000 yards, joining Rich Gannon and the Hall of Famer, the late Ken Stabler.

Running back Jalen Richard had a team-high five catches for 52 yards. it was the fifth-straight game that Richard has led the Raiders in catches. For the season, Richard has 48 receptions.

Defensively, safety Marcus Gilchrist tallied his first interception in Silver and Black, while rookie defensive tackle Maurice Hurst notched his third sack of the year. Hurst’s three sacks are tied for fifth-most among rookie defenders this season.

In Week 10, the Arizona Cardinals (2-7) lost on the road to the Kansas City Chiefs 26-14 at Arrowhead Stadium. Cardinals rookie quarterback Josh Rosen completed 22-of-39 for 208 passing yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Running back David Johnson rushed for 98 yards on 21 carries, and scored two touchdowns on the ground and in the air. Johnson also led the Cardinals with seven receptions for 85 yards.

Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, who will be walking into the Hall of Fame once his career is over, finished with six catches for 50 yards and passed newly-minted Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens for No. 2 on the NFL’s career receiving yardage list in the closing minutes, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Now in his 15th season, Fitzgerald has amassed 15,952 receiving yards in his career, trailing only Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. Rice racked up 22,895 receiving yards during his stellar 20-year career.

Following Sunday’s game, the Raiders will head East during the Thanksgiving Weekend when they take on the Baltimore Ravens. The Week 12 matchup will mark the fourth-straight season that the two clubs will meet in the regular season.

The Cardinals will travel to Carson, Calif. to take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 12.

Cardinals’ fourth quarter rally upends 49ers 18-15

GLENDALE, Ariz. — In a war of attrition between two of the NFL’s three 1-6 teams going into Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals used a couple of late drives to come from behind and defeat the San Francisco 49ers 18-15 at recently renamed State Farm Stadium.

The 49ers and New York Giants are the only teams at 1-7 after this weekend. San Francisco hosts the 1-6 Oakland Raiders on Thursday night. Arizona improved to 2-6.

Josh Rosen’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk in the back of the end zone with :34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, gave Arizona its first lead since 3-2 in the second quarter. Rosen then connected with Larry Fitzgerald at the near left pylon for a 2-point conversion, giving the Cardinals a three-point lead, as Arizona outscored the Niners 15-0 in the final 11:06.

Kirk said the game-winning score was “just the same stuff we were working on in practice all week.”

“I just knew from the depth of my route that I was going to be in-bounds, just based off the ball that Josh gave me,” Kirk said. “I had to stretch for it a little bit, so that’s why I knew when it hit my hands, I’ve got to tuck it really quick because I’m about to get hit.”

“We didn’t score enough points,” 49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan said. “And our defense gave us a very good chance to win, getting us those three turnovers, getting us that 12-point lead. Didn’t capitalize on them enough with touchdowns, and then we didn’t make the plays at the end when we needed to.”

“We had the advantage the whole game,” 49ers defensive lineman DeForest Buckner said. “The defense was playing lights out the whole game. We just couldn’t finish it off at the end. … Up front, personally, I have to do a better job trying to help my team get a stop.”

Niners cornerback Richard Sherman added, “We just didn’t make enough plays. We got them in third down a few times

The 49ers drove to their own 45-yard line on their final drive, but on the game’s last play, quarterback C.J. Beathard mishandled a long snap and wound up throwing an incomplete pass as time expired.

On talking to 49ers center Erik Magnuson about shotgun snaps late in the game, Beathard said, “You definitely do when you’re able to huddle up. If the snap isn’t where it needs to be, I’ll give him a heads up or whatever. But when you’re in a two-minute situation, it’s not really what you’re thinking about.”

San Francisco scored the first touchdown of the game at 6:32 of the third quarter, when Beathard connected with Marquise Goodwin on a 55-yard touchdown pass.

The 49ers increased their lead to 15-3 on a 20-yard field goal by Robbie Gould at 13:33 of the fourth quarter.

“That was big,” Cardinals safety Antoine Bethea said. “That’s four points off the board. It was a big stop.”

The Cardinals caught a break when, on a pass completion to Larry Fitzgerald, San Francisco was called for roughing the passer, moving the ball to the 49er 13. Two plays later, a 12-yard touchdown pass from Rosen to Fitzgerald, pulled Arizona to within 15-10.

“Anytime you can get a win, that’s what it’s all about,” Fitzgerald said about getting his 112th career touchdown catch, and the win. “That’s the reason you play the game, that’s why we come here and do it; it’s not for personal accolades.”

Arizona almost caught another break at 4:44 of the fourth quarter, when a fumble recovery by Fred Warner was initially ruled out-of-bounds as the Cardinals were driving. San Francisco successfully challenged the ruling, and took over at its own 31. But the 49ers’ drive stalled.

“If we could have gotten another first down, we would have been able to run the clock down a lot more,” Beathard said.

San Francisco was awarded a safety by rule with 4:07 left in the first quarter, when Cards quarterback Josh Rosen was flagged for intentional grounding while in the end zone. Arizona had the ball at their own 8

Phil Dawson booted a 31-yard field goal at 10:23 of the second quarter, putting the Cardinals ahead 3-2

Following an interception by Jaquiski Tartt at the Arizona 35, Gould made a 27-yard field goal four plays later, putting San Francisco back in front at 5-3.

Both teams did most of their offensive damage through the air. For San Francisco, Beathard completed 14 of 28 passes for 190 yards, and Matt Brieda ran 16 times for 42 yards. David Johnson led the Cardinals with 59 rushing yards on 16 attempts. Rosen completed 23 of 40 for 252 yards, and Fitzgerald snared 8 passes for 102 yards.

Facing a short week before hosting the Raiders on Thursday, Goodwin said “Usually, we have 24 hours to get over it. We have to get over it as soon as we get on the plane when we leave here. Just leave it here and focus on Thursday,”

NOTES: Coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects WR Pierre Garçon to “be good for Thursday night. Just trying to get his knee healthy,” Garçon has been mentioned in trade rumors with the NFL trade deadline approaching. … T Joe Staley appeared in his 166th regular season game with the 49ers, by T Steve Wallace for fifth most in a career in franchise history. … San Francisco’s inactive list included QB Tom Savage, WR Pierre Garçon, DB Greg Mabin, C Weston Richburg, DT Julian Taylor, T Shon Coleman, DL D.J. Jones. … 49ers lead the overall regular season series 29-26, going back to their first meeting with the then-Chicago Cardinals in 1951.

INJURIES: 49ers LB Reuben Foster left the game at the 2-minute warning in the first half with a hamstring pull; S Jaquiski Tartt sustained a shoulder injury in the second quarter and did not return; DB Antone Exum Jr. was examined for a possible head injury in the fourth quarter. … Cardinals RB David Johnson was evaluated for a possible concussion in the fourth quarter and later returned to the game.

UP NEXT: The 49ers face the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football at 5:20 pm PT.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in the 49ers’ 28-18 Loss to the Cardinals

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA–Any optimism left in the 2018 season for the 49ers walked out of Levi’s Stadium disgusted on Sunday after the Arizona Cardinal’s picked up their first win of the season with a 28-18 victory over San Francisco.

The Niners can’t seem to shake the constants in their season that continue to cost them games. Injuries, penalties, turnovers, and missed tackles continue to be the Achilles heel of the red and gold, and there’s no sign of the bleeding to come to an end. On Sunday, injuries and turnovers once again delivered the knock-out blow.

The Ugly
Statistics show that when a team is minus-one in the turnover differential mark, they have an 80% chance of losing the game. On Sunday, the 49ers coughed up the ball five times, while the Cardinals didn’t lose the ball once.

Four of them came from C.J. Beathard with two interceptions and two strip sacks, including a scoop and score that gave Arizona a 21-12 lead and ended the game.

The other turnover came on Raheem Mostert’s first carry of the season before Patrick Peterson returned it 49 yards, setting up Arizona’s second TD.

The only reason Mostert even touched the ball was due to injury. After rushing eight times for 56 yards, including a long of 17 yards, it looked like Matt Breida was once again off to an explosive start. That is, until his eighth carry of the game, when he went down with a left ankle sprain that prevented him from returning.

The Bad
After the Niners scored first, they, of course, missed the extra point attempt due to a bad snap. Robbie Gould didn’t even attempt to kick it.

Arizona didn’t take long to come right back in it. On his best play of the day, Josh Rosen immediately went deep and hooked up with Christian Kirk on a 75-yard play action pass that found the end zone. The Cardinals did make the extra point to go up 7-6.

The 49ers pass rush remains one of the worst in all of football. Despite, holding Rosen to an abysmal 10-of-25 for 170 yards, the Niners were only able to sack him once and hit him four times.

The lone sack came from Cassius Marsh, caused by a bad snap that Rosen had to pick up. The three other QB hits came from DeForest Buckner, who remains the only playmaker the defense seems to have.

With a rookie quarterback that is struggling on the worst team in the league, the defense needs to be better. Instead, they let him walk in and collect the first win of his career throwing only nine completions for 95 yards after his first play of the game.

David Johnson found the end zone twice for the Cardinals. Thanks to excellent field position, he was held to a total of 55 yards, but still finished with a productive day with his second coming in garbage time in the fourth quarter to extend Arizona’s lead to 28-12.

On top of the missed PAT from Robbie Gould, he also missed a 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that ended his franchise-long 33 straight field goals made.

The Good
There aren’t too many positives to take from San Francisco’s most embarrassing loss in recent memory, especially when you have five turnovers. However, on the drives where San Francisco didn’t turnover the ball, it wasn’t completely awful.

On the opening drive, Beathard found rhythm with Kyle Juszczyk connecting on two big plays for a combined 44 yards that led the team down the field. The Niners cruised down the field before Breida found paydirt on a quick shovel pass from Beathard for the opening score.

Juszczyk caught six of the seven passes sent his way for 75 yards.

Beathard’s numbers looked okay too (of course, minus the turnovers). He threw 34-of-53 for 349 yards and two touchdowns. He once again worked well with George Kittle, who’s beginning to look like the only weapon left on defense. Kittle caught five passes for 83 yards, including the Niners’ biggest offensive play of the day at 45 yards.

The Niners racked up 447 yards of total offense and held the ball for an astonishing 40:12, but again gave the ball up five times.

Of course, there’s no silver lining when your team loses at home to the worst team in football, except for the fact that the Faithful will give up on the season and pull for a better draft pick.

Hey, the Niners just moved ahead of Arizona on the draft board.

49ers look to get back on track vs. winless Cardinals

By Jeremy Harness

The 49ers have been banged up all season thus far, but they have stayed competitive throughout, when it has seemed that all has been lost.

That should help, as they prepare to face the Arizona Cardinals, who have yet to win a game in this young season, Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium, in a game featuring a pair of struggling teams that had lofty expectations heading into the season.

C.J. Beathard kept the 49ers in the game but ultimately could not bring his team to victory on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers, as a pair of interceptions–including one that put the brakes on the 49ers’ last drive of the game–proved to be his undoing.

He will look to improve on his performance at home Sunday afternoon, but he will have a rather-depleted lineup to work with. For starters, left tackle Joe Staley injured his knee against the Chargers, and he did not practice Wednesday because of it.

Meanwhile, running back Matt Breida was limited in practice on Wednesday with a shoulder injury he’s been dealing with, while guard Mike Person was limited with a knee injury of his own.

To add to all of that, receiver Dante Pettis also injured his knee early on in Sunday’s game and did not practice on Wednesday, while fellow receiver Marquise Goodwin is nursing hamstring and quadricep issues and was held out of Wednesday’s practice.

Like the 49ers, the Cardinals have a new starting quarterback in rookie Josh Rosen, who impressed the Arizona brass in his NFL debut in nearly pulling out the win against Seattle last Sunday.

For Arizona, star receiver Larry Fitzgerald is dealing with hamstring and back issues and did not practice on Wednesday, although he is expected to play Sunday. Also expected to play on Sunday are tight end Jermaine Gresham and tackle Andre Smith, and both were limited in practice

49ers’ Still Seek First Win 20-10 loss to Arizona; Drop to 0-9

By: Joe Lami

SANTA CLARA, Calif — 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan will have to wait at least another week before his first National Football League win. His best chance of the season came on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Arizona came in off their bye week and had their way with the 49ers, winning 20-10. Drew Stanton started at quarterback for Arizona after Carson Palmer broke his arm in week seven. The extra week for Stanton seemed to be just enough, as he finished 15 of 30 for 201 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw one interception.

The Cardinals leaned heavily on Adrian Peterson, who had his best game yet since going to the desert, running for 159 yards on a career-high 37 carries.

Arizona won the game with their defensive line, as the 49ers were completely shut down offensively. The banged-up front for the Niners came back to haunt them, as C.J. Beathard was unable to do anything, getting hit a total of 16 times, including five sacks.

Even, Arizona coach, Bruce Arians was impressed by Beathard’s toughness, “that was a beat-up offensive line and God bless him. He’s tough as nails and stood in there and threw the ball because we hit him a bunch.”

When Beathard was able to throw the ball, he was inconsistent and inaccurate, completing 26 of 51 passes for 294 yards and an interception. However, he was the only 49er to find the end zone, as he used his feet to slam it in from one-yard on a read-option play in the third quarter.

The San Francisco defense kept them in the game but unfortunately, the stagnant Niners offense couldn’t do anything.

Eric Reid made a great play late in the second quarter intercepting a pass in the end zone that would have put Arizona up 21-3 before the half, but the offense stalled out after a false start penalty and a couple of incompletions.

Penalties continue to be a reoccurring issue with San Francisco, as they continue to commit penalties. On Sunday, they committed eight penalties for 53 yards, bringing their season total to 76 penalties for 516 yards.

49ers’ wide receiver, Marquise Goodwin, recognizes the problem, “it’s the same thing every week. It’s the same story. We just have to get better from that. They didn’t go out there and beat our heads in. We did it to ourselves each week.”

The difference between winning and losing usually comes in the form of penalties and with the Niners being towards the bottom of the league, it’s something the coaching staff needs to find a way to fix. After all, they are 0-9 and haven’t won a game at home since September 12th, 2016.
