Between video games, cellular telephones, streaming services, podcasts, and the internet and now Artificial Intelligence, it was not surprising that Sports Illustrated’s recent layoffs have shaken the 70-year-old sports magazine and, in a way, the sports publishing world.

The best-selling issue of all time for SI was not a cover of Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Lebron James, or Shohei Ohtani. In 1989, the 25th-anniversary edition of SI featuring Kathy Ireland on the cover was the best-selling ever.

The country has changed since the 1980s and 1990s; heck, it has changed since the 2000s, when Colin Kaepernick took a knee, and all of a sudden, we were talking politics over sports, which is never a good idea because most people who buy SI could care less of your political leanings or affiliation. But in the significantly changing world we are living in, other things are coming that influence journalists, including sports journalism,

Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, has revolutionized many sports, including team practices, competition, and communication. It is still early, but AI is already inside our media, mainly based on audience preferences. AI can put out a quote by a person (voice) impersonating somebody else, which will sound like it is the natural person…but it is not. It will “aid” news, fact-checking and content.

The Sports Illustrated cover that once defined sports does not anymore, according to the oldest daily-publishing newspaper in the United States, the New York Post, which has an editorial that explains why Sports Illustrated’s future comes down to a high-stakes game of chicken between the iconic magazine’s billionaire overlords.

Sports Illustrated gutted most of their staff this past week, and their future is unknown. SI might survive, but they might not.

–My recommendation to SI, for whatever is worth: Why not publish a future cover of Air Force Officer Second LT Madison Marsh, who was the first active-duty service member to win the Miss America competition? The 22-year-old beauty graduated from the Air Force Academy last year with a degree in physics. So it is not sports? But Miss America is still a fierce competition, and after all, what does Sports Illustrated have to lose?

San Jose State falls to Toledo 21-17

The San Jose State Spartans looked to win two in a row at the Toledo Rockets on Saturday, but they didn’t. San Jose State fell to Toledo 21-17 at Glass Bowl Stadium. SJSU’s record dropped to 1-3, while Toledo improved to 2-1.

After a scoreless first quarter, San Jose State took a second-quarter lead in only a minute. Kyler Halvorsen kicked a 37-yard field goal to make it 3-0 Spartans at 7:47. Spartans quarterback Chevan Cordeiro threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dominick Mazotti, who scored his first of the season, and Halvorsen kicked an extra point to give the Spartans a 10-0 lead at 6:47.

The Rockets cut the Spartans’ lead to 10-7 with ten seconds left in the second quarter. Rockets quarterback Dequan Finn threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jerjuan Newton, who scored a touchdown, and Luke Pawlak kicked an extra point to make it a three-point game.

The Spartans took a 10-7 lead to the locker room at halftime.

The Spartans took a ten-point lead at 9:58 of the third quarter. Kairee Robinson ran for a 15-yard touchdown and Kyler Halvorson kicked in an extra point to put the Spartans up 17-7.

The Rockets made it a three-point game at 6:15 of the third quarter. Dequan Finn ran for an 18-yard touchdown and Luke Pawlak kicked in an extra point to cut the Spartans’ lead to 17-14.

The Rockets took their first lead of the game with 2:01 left in the third quarter. Chris McDonald scored a touchdown on a 25-yard interception return and Luke Pawlak kicked in an extra point to put the Rockets up 21-14.

San Jose State breaks out the brooms after 75-62 defeat of Air Force

The San Jose State men’s basketball swept its Mountain West series against the Air Force Falcons with a 75-62 win at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center on Saturday. With the win, SJSU improved to 5-11, 3-9 MW, and won its third straight game.

SJSU head coach Jean Prioleau kept the same starting lineup against AF. Omari Moore, Trey Smith, Jalen Dalcourt, Caleb Simmons, and Ralph Agee stepped out on the court. The Spartans won the jump ball, and Simmons scored the first points of the game with a layup in the paint for a 2-0 lead at the 18-minute mark.

The Spartans went on a 10-0 run and took an early 10-0 lead at 14:06. Just 10 seconds later, AJ Walker ended the Spartans’ run with a jumper. The score was now 10-2 Spartans.

The Falcons played harder, but were unable to catch up to the Spartans. Omari Moore and Ralph Agee scored the final points of the first half — a fastbreak layup in the paint and a layup, respectively. The Spartans took a 39-28 lead to the locker room at halftime. SJSU shot 61.5% at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half on the right foot, but the Falcons kept the game interesting. Ralph Agee made a jumper for a 41-28 Spartans lead just 54 seconds into the second half.

The Falcons used a 7-2 run to pull within eight, 43-35, at 17:30. Ralph Agee ended the Falcons’ run with a second-chance layup. The Spartans now led by ten, 45-35, at 16:43. Agee made another second-chance layup, and the Spartans eclipsed the 50-point plateau, leading 50-42 at 13:19.

Trey Smith made a pair of fastbreak free throws to help the Spartans build a 10-point lead, 70-60, with 31 seconds left in the second half. Smith made another pair of fastbreak free throws to close out the game. The Spartans won 75-62. Ralph Agee led all scorers in points (22) and rebounds (14).

AF fell to 4-12, 2-10 MW. AJ Walker led all scorers with 16 points.

The Spartans visit the San Diego State Aztecs for a two-game series starting Monday, February 8th at 8 pm PT.

San Jose State tops New Mexico 83-71 for first conference win

The San Jose State men’s basketball team finally picked up their first conference win of the season with a 83-71 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday at Burns Arena in St. George, Utah.

With the win, SJSU snapped a five-game losing skid and improved to 3-11, 1-9 Mountain West. Jalen Dalcourt, Sebastian Mendoza, Ralph Agee and Trey Smith all finished with 16 points. Omari Moore finished with 14 points.

Spartans head coach Jean Prioleau made two changes to his starting lineup, inserting Trey Smith and Caleb Simmons into the first five. The remaining starters were Omari Moore, Jalen Dalcourt and Ralph Agee.

Omari Moore opened the scoring with a layup for a 2-0 Spartans lead 48 seconds into the first half. It wasn’t long before the Lobos tied the game 2-2 at 18:46 when Valdir Manuel knocked down a jumper. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the first half. Sebastian Mendoza started a fast break and finished it with a dunk to tie the game 33-33 with 1:27 left in the first half. Just 14 seconds later, UNM went ahead 35-33 on a 2-pointer from Rod Brown.

The Spartans trailed 35-33 at the halftime break. Trey Smith made four of six 3-point attempts for a career-best 12 points at halftime.

The Spartans reignited themselves for the second half. SJSU surged for their largest lead of the game, 59-54, with 8:36 left in the second half. Caleb Simmons made the layup. Just 28 seconds later, Omari Moore added a fast break dunk to make it 61-54 Spartans.

From there on out, SJSU didn’t let UNM affect their game. The Spartans extended their lead to 71-60 with 3-pointers from Sebastian Mendoza and Jalen Dalcourt in a span of 2:52. Jalen Dalcourt wrapped up the Spartans’ scoring with a pair of free throws, while Valdir Manuel concluded the game’s overall scoring with a jumper.

UNM fell to 5-9, 1-9 Mountain West. Valdir Manuel led all scorers with 25 points.

The Spartans take on the Air Force Falcons at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Thursday, January 28 at 6:30 pm PT.

San Jose State loses to Air Force 41-24 in Colorado Springs

The San Jose State football team had hoped to win two games in a row on Friday night against the Air Force Falcons at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Did it happen? Nope.

SJSU got the party started with a body blow. DeJon Packer punched it in from 1-yard out and the Spartans scored a touchdown on the opening drive for a 7-0 lead at 10:50 of the first quarter. Matt Mercurio kicked in the extra point.

But Air Force rained on SJSU’s parade and pretty much never looked back. Timothy Jackson scored on a 7-yard run to tie the game 7-7 with 4:57 left in the first. Jake Koehnke kicked in the extra point.

The game was tied 7-7 after the first.

Despite Bailey Gaither making a noteworthy catch on the sidelines and DeJon Packer having as many touchdowns so far this season (3) as in his first two seasons combined, Air Force poured in the points in the second quarter with 14. Donald Hammond III threw a pass to Geraud Sanders for a 64-yard touchdown with 8:43 left in the second. Taven Birdow plunged in from 1-yard out for the touchdown with 5:30 left in the second. Jake Koehnke kicked in both of the extra points.

SJSU cut their deficit to 11, thanks to Matt Mercurio’s 25-yard field goal with 48 seconds left in the second. After that, Air Force drove to the 4-yard line, but Jesse Osuna recovered a fumble and it was the Spartans’ football.

The Spartans trailed 21-10 at halftime.

Air Force, however, was ruthless in the third quarter. The Falcons opened the second half with a touchdown. Christian Mallard ran for a 3-yard touchdown for his first score of the season at 12:05 of the third quarter. Mallard then rushed for his second score, a 7-yard touchdown, at 10:10 of the third. The Falcons also held the Spartans on the 1-yard line and took over on downs. Jake Koehnke’s first kick was blocked, but his second kick was a success for the extra point.

The Spartans trailed 34-10 after three.

Once again, Air Force started things off in the fourth quarter. Taven Birdow ran for a 3-yard touchdown for a 41-10 lead with 7:48 left in the fourth. Jake Koehnke kicked in the extra point.

SJSU heated up late in the fourth, but it was too little, too late. Props to the Spartans for showing no quit though.

Nick Nash threw a pass to Andre Crump for a 30-yard touchdown to pull within 24 with 3:51 left in the fourth. The Spartans then got a 4th down stop on their own 22-yard line and it was their ball. Nash wrapped up the scoring with a pass to Derrick Deese Jr. for a 6-yard touchdown to pull within 17 with just 52 seconds left in regulation. Matt Mercurio kicked in both of the extra points.

The Spartans (2-2) lost to the Falcons (3-1) by a final score of 41-24.

The Spartans return home to host the New Mexico Lobos on Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on CBS Sports.

On the NCAAF podcast with Michelle:

#1 Boise State left little doubt in their game against Air Force 30-19, Boise State quarterback Hank Backmeier threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns for the win. Boise State improved their perfect record to 4-0.

#2 The Wisconsin Badgers #13 defeated the Michigan Wolverines #11 35-14. It was the Badgers who wasted no time jumping way ahead of Michigan 28-0 in the first half. The Badgers quarterback Jack Coan threw for 128 yards, while running back Jonathan Taylor scored twice and ran 203 yards.

#3 The Florida Gators (3-0) just ran all day over the Tennessee Vols (1-2) all day 34-3. The game wasn’t even close and Gators quarterback Kyle Trask threw for 298 and two touchdowns. The Gators are going places.
