Barracuda draw first blood with 2-0 shutout win over Reign in Game 1 of best of three series

Pavol Regenda scored the eventual game winning goal early in the third period as the sixth seeded San Jose Barracuda shutout the third seeded Ontario Reign 2-0 in Game 1 of the best of three Pacific Division first round series on Thursday evening at Crypto.com Arena.

San Jose leads the series 1-0 and have two chances to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

An uneventful opening 20 minutes featured a scoreless period. A total of three power plays, two by San Jose and one by Ontario, proved to be an exhibition of infertility as neither team could take advantage. It was tough for both teams to establish any type of flow offensively as the Barracuda outshot the Reign 9-8.

The Cuda’s Yaroslav Askarov and the Reign’s Phoenix Copley both made a big save in the final 30 seconds of the first period. First Askarov made a pad save on a Jack Studnicka at the 19:30 mark and Copley challenged Donovon Houle’s wrist shot with a shoulder save with two seconds remaining in the opening frame.

The second period was even less entertaining than the first one. Each team had an abbreviated power play but once again zeros remained in the goal column of the scoreboard. Ontario outshot San Jose 8-7. The best chance came with 31 seconds remaining in the middle frame.

A bad change by the Barracuda led to a breakaway attempt for Studnicka but he chipped the puck wide of the net as Askarov came out from the crease and challenged the shot that affected Studnicka being able to put it on net.

San Jose broke the deadlock early in the third period. Luca Cagnoni found Ethan Frisch along the right point. Frisch skated in a sent a wrist shot on that was redirected by Regenda who was parked in front of the crease for his first goal of the series at the 7:12 mark.

The Barracuda doubled its lead on the power play just over a minute later. Cagnoni led a counterattack from inside his own zone when he found Colin White up in the neutral zone. White led a three-on-one odd man rush and sent a cross-ice pass over to Filip Bystedt who buried a wrist shot past Copley for his first goal of the series at the 8:38 mark.

Ontario was held without a shot on goal in the final frame despite starting the period with a four-minute power play when Zach Ostapchuk went into the sin bin for high sticking 21 seconds in. However, Samuel Fagemo canceled out the majority of the power play when he took a slashing penalty at the 1:35 mark. It was the first time in franchise history San Jose held an opponent without a shot in a third period.

Askarov finished the game stopping all 16 shots he faced for his first career Calder Cup Playoffs shutout. Copley made 23 saves on 25 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-7 on the power play. Ontario was 0-for-5.

Barracuda left winger Danil Gushchin was a last-minute scratch by Cuda head coach John McCarthy as he suffered an illness to keep him out of the lineup.

#1 The San Jose Barracuda were shutout by the Calgary Wranglers on Sunday 4-0 not quite the ideal way the Barracuda wanted to end their season before going to the Southland for the AHL playoffs.

#2 The disadvantage of this best two out of three playoffs is all of them will be in the Southland and the Barracuda do not get one home game in this upcoming series.

#3 Scoring in the game it was all Wranglers on Sunday with Carter King scoring his first goal of the season at 13:16 in the first period.

#4 The Wranglers would score twice in the second period Clark Bishop scored his 19th goal of the season at 10:19 and at 14:09 Lucas Ciona scores eighth of the year for a 3-0 lead at the end of the second period. In the third period at 4:25 Dryden Hunt scored his 16th goal of the season and put the final touches for scoring winning it.

#5 The Barracuda open up the best two out of three on Thursday Ontario does have that big advantage hosting two games on the 24th and 26th at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown LA and a possible game 3 on the 28th at the Toyota Arena in Ontario.

San Jose Barracuda crack Calgary Wranglers 8-3

The San Jose Barracuda got big jump on the Calgary Wranglers and took for the first game of this two set 8-3 on Friday.

The Barracuda opened up the scoring early on the first shot of the game at 2:23 of the first period. Luca Cagnoni broke a franchise record for most goals by a defensemen, scoring his 15th of the season. Calgary tied the game at 1-1, courtesy of Martin Frk. A puck off of Pavol Regenda gave San Jose their lead back, Regenda with his eighth of the season.

37 seconds into the second, San Jose got out to a three to one lead. Filip Bystedt scored his 12th of the year on a wide open net. The Barracuda struck again a minute later when Patrick Giles scored his ninth of the season.

With a 4-1 lead, San Jose chased out Devin Cooley, Walterri Ignatjew came in with 18 minutes left of the second. Braden Hache extended the lead to 5-1 scoring from the left point, his third of the season. San Jose blew the game open when Scott Sabourin hit the ten goal mark to improve the score to 6-1.

On a takeaway by the Wranglers, Calgary cut into San Jose’s lead, Carter Wilkie scoring his second goal of the season.

Going into the third period, San Jose didn’t take their foot off of the gas pedal. Scoring their second powerplay goal, Luca Cagnoni scored his second of the day. Calgary kept fighting with William Strömgren scoring his 14th goal to cut the lead to 7-3. To seal the win, Anthony Vincent scored his tenth goal to make the score 8-3.

San Jose was on a scoring frenzy all game, but Calgary dominated the shots on goals. After the first period, San Jose outshot Calgary 9 -4. After the second period, Calgary outshot San Jose 16-9. To end the game, San Jose outshot Calgary 12-7 in the third.

Both teams stayed out of the box for most of the game. San Jose committed only two penalties and Calgary wasn’t able to capitalize. Calgary committed four penalties and San Jose was able to capitalize on half of them.

For San Jose, Gabriel Carriere got the start with Aaron Dell backing up. Carriere, recording the win, made 26 saves on 29 shots. For Calgary, the Bay Area native Devin Cooley got the start. Cooley, recording the loss, made eight saves on 12 shots. Ignatjew who entered the game during the second period, made 14 saves on 17 shots.

The Barracuda will close out the regular season tomorrow against this Calgary team. Playoffs are still being decided but San Jose will host the second round at home at Tech Cu Arena.

#1 Marko final home game of the regular season the San Jose Barracuda (35-26-5-4) gave up two goals in the first three minutes and could never find their way back eventually losing to the visiting Ontario Reign (41-24-3-1) at Tech CU in San Jose.

#2 What was impressive was the Reign’s goaltender 18 years old Carter George had 33 saves in his first professional game and what a way to start with your first shutout as well.

#3 The Reign’s Martin Chromiak scored his 17th goal of the season on a tipped in shot from the right point from between the circles for a 1-0 lead. The Reign’s Reilly Walsh scored his fifth goal of the season making it 2-0 going top shelf in the offensive zone off the face off.

#4 In the second period San Jose had opportunities to get on the scoreboard the Reign’s Walsh did it again scoring a perfect shot glove side under goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from between the circles. The Reign came away with a 4-0 shutout for the win on Saturday night.

#5 The Barracuda take on the fifth placed Calgary Wranglers next Friday and Saturday to conclude the regular season. The Wranglers are 36-27-4-3 and won five of their last ten games. How do you see this match up in Calgary?

Barracuda Shut Out 4-0 by Reign; San Jose’s clinches spot for post season

A day after clinching their spot in the Calder Cup playoffs, the San Jose Barracuda lost 4-0 to the Ontario Reign on Saturday. Martin Chromiak, Riley Walsh and Taylor Ward scored for the Reign. 18 year old Carter George made 33 saves for the win in his professional debut. Yaroslav Askarov made 24 saves in the loss. The loss makes home ice in the playoffs less likely for the Barracuda.

Ontario jumped to an early lead with a goal at 1:50 of the first period. Martin Chromiak’s shot from the point made its way through traffic into the net. Assists went to Joseph Cecconi and Reilly Walsh.

Reilly Walsh scored right off an offensive zone faceoff win, giving the Reign a 2-0 lead. An assist went to Kaleb Lawrence.

The shot count was very close in the first, 10-9 Barracuda. San Jose finished the first period on a power play with 1:26 left on that to start the second period. The Barracuda did not score on that power play or the five-on-three that they had at the end of the period.

They did give up one goal during four-on-four play that ate up the final seconds of a late Barracuda power play.

Riley Walsh got a shot off from high in the slot after Jack Studnicka set him up with a pass from below the goal line. An assist also went to Andre Lee.

The Reign made it 4-0 midway through the third period on a power play. Charles Hudon passed the puck across the ice to Taylor Ward for a shot that got by Askarov before he could get across. Assists went to Hudon and Martin Chromiak.

Pavol Regenda led the Barracuda in shots with 4. Jake Furlong, Jimmy Shuldt, Ethan Cardwell and Filip Bystedt each had three shots.

The Barracuda next play on Friday in Calgary against the Wranglers at 2:00 PM PDT.

Barracuda clinch for a playoff spot, first time since 2019; San Jose defeats Ontario 4-1 at Tech CU

SAN JOSE– The San Jose Barracuda clinched for the post season after defeating the Ontario Reign 4-1 at Tech CU Arena in San Jose on Friday night. Ontario opened up the scoring, 36 seconds into the game when Caleb Jones scored his second of the season. San Jose tied the game up at 1-1 when Scott Sabourin scored his ninth goal of the season, three minutes into the second period.

The third period was all San Jose. Pavol Regenda scored his seventh power-play goal of the season after Caleb Jones took a high-sticking penalty, giving San Jose their first lead of the game. They extended their lead even further when Danil Guschin scored his 27th of the season at 11:07 of the third.

Pavol Regenda sealed the win scoring his second power-play goal of the night after two Ontario Reign players were called for roughing. Registering the assists on both Regenda goals, Guschin registered three points; two assists and one goal.

San Jose coming out with the win, the shots on goal were dominated by them for the majority of the game. In the first period, Ontario outshot San Jose 14 to 7. In the second period, San Jose outshot Ontario 9-8. Lastly, in the third period, San Jose outshot Ontario 13-7. This ended with Ontario outshooting San Jose 32-29.

Each team’s penalty kill was put to work in Friday’s game. Coming into Friday, San Jose was ranked fourth and Ontario was ranked third. San Jose took six penalties and Ontario took seven. San Jose was able to capitalize on two penalties, courtesy of Pavol Regenda. Ontario wasn’t able to capitalize on any penalties, going 0/4 on the power-play.

Friday’s winning goalie was San Jose’s Gabriel Carriere. Carriere nearly had a perfect game, only letting in one goal, making 31 saves on 32 shots. Friday’s losing goalie was Ontario’s Pheonix Copley. Copley made 25 saves on 29 shots.

#1 Marko, the San Jose Barracuda never got on track as they were scrambling and trying to figure out the Colorado Eagles defense Saturday in Colorado the lack off offense hurt them as they lost by two goals 3-1 in their last game.

#2 The Eagles Oskar Olausson scored his 11th goal of the season to get the Eagles started with a 1-0 lead. He got assist from TJ Tynan and Jack Ahcan at 19:50.

#3 In the second period Scott Sabourin scored his eighth goal of the season 23 seconds into the period and it would turn out to be San Jose’s only goal of the contest making it a 1-1.

#4 The Eagles got their final two goals of the game at 4:53 in the second period Jayson Megna picked up his 18th goal of the season taking a 2-1 lead. In the third period Tye Falhaber scored his 21st goal at 19:14. and the Eagles came away with a 3-1 win. It was the Barracuda’s 25th loss of the season making them 33-25-3-2.

#5 Next up for San Jose they make the trip to face the Coachella Firebirds on Wednesday with a 7:00pm face off at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms. The Firebirds are fourth in the Pacific at 36-24-2-5. The Firebirds are playing .500 hockey having lost five of their last ten games. Marko how do you see this match up.

Barracuda fall 3-1 to Eagles in Askarov’s return

The Colorado Eagles knocked off the San Jose Barracuda 3-1 in Colorado on Saturday night. The Eagles got the first lead of the game with ten seconds left of the first period. Oskar Olausson scored his 11th of the season. With the secondary assist, Jack Ahcan extended his point streak to two games. Colorado took the lone penalty when Mark Sedan took a two-minute cross-checking penalty.

23 seconds into the second period, San Jose tied the game, courtesy of Scott Sabourin. Scoring in back to back games, Sabourin extended his point streak to two games. Recording the lone assist, Lucas Vanroboys made it back to back games, assisting on a Sabourin goal. After good puck movement, Colorado regained their lead. Jayson Megna, older brother of former Shark Jaycob Megna scored his 18th of the season.

San Jose was the better team at staying out of the box. Only committing four penalties while Colorado committed five, most of the Barracuda’s penalties came from the fight that occured in the second period. Just like last night, two players on each team dropped the gloves. Saturday night, it was Walker Duehr and Braden Hache of the Barracuda, and Nikita Prishchepov of the Colorado, each dropped the gloves.

The Eagles sealed the win, splitting the series. Tye Felhaber scored an empty net goal to secure the win and avoid the sweep against San Jose. Matthew Phillips recording the primary assist, recorded two assists on the night.

Colorado dominated nearly every aspect of the game but most notably, they outshot the Barracuda consistently all game. The shots were 10-8 after the first period, 16-7 after the second period, and 6-7 after the third period.

In his first game back since February, Yaroslav Akarov recorded his 7th loss of the season. In his 7th loss, Askarov made 29 saves on 31 shots. For Colorado, Kevin Mandolese got the start. Mandolese recorded the win, making 21 saves on 22 shots.

The Barracuda will be back in action on Wednesday April 9th in Coachella Valley taking on the Firebirds. This will be the last matchup between the two teams this season.

Barracuda take down first place Eagles 6-3

After 17 games missed due to injury, San Jose Barracuda Filip Bystedt returned to the lineup in Friday night’s game against Colorado Eagles. Previous to his injury, Bystedt was riding a four-game point streak. In tonight’s game, Bystedt registered two points. Scoring one goal and recording one assist. The Barracuda picked up the 6-3 win at Blue FCU Arena in Loveland.

In his first game back, Filip Bystedt opened up the scoring to give San Jose their first lead of the game. Colorado quickly tied the game 30 seconds later. Jayson Megna, the older brother of former Shark Jason Megna, scored his 17th of the season.

The second period was a scoring frenzy. Colorado took their first lead of the game at 9:41, Cooper Gay scored his first AHL goal of the season. San Jose tied the game four minutes later, Scott Sabourin scored his seventh of the season. Colorado regained their lead when Jere Innala scored his 16th goal of the season. San Jose tied the game up once again when Patrick Giles scored his second goal in back to back games.

Taking advantage of Colorado’s fifth penalty taken, Patrick Giles scored his second of the night. With the primary assist, Filip Bystedt recorded his second point in his first game back from injury. San Jose extended their lead to 5-3 three minutes later when Lucas Vanroboys scored his 11th of the season. Sabourin registering the secondary assist, recorded his second point of the night.

Anthony Vincent sealed the win, scoring an empty net goal to improve the score to 6-3.

Keeping the trend going, San Jose was the better team at staying out of the box. San Jose took four penalties while Colorado took five. Majority of the penalties taken were in the second period when each team had two guys drop the gloves. For San Jose, Patrick Giles and Braden Hache. For Colorado, Chase Bradley and Ivan Ivan. San Jose was the only team to captialize, scoring one power-play goal.

Aaron Dell was tonight’s starting goalie, with Yaroslav Askarov backing him up. Dell recorded 15 saves on 18 shots. Dell’s record now moves to 2-3. For Colorado, Trent Miner was the starting goalie. Miner made 22 saves on 27 shots. Miner’s record now moves to 19-8.

Reign edge Barracuda 3-2 in tightly knit contest

SAN JOSE — Aatu Jamsen scored the eventual game winning goal in the second period as the Ontario Reign defeated the San Jose Barracuda 3-2 despite getting outplayed for the majority of the game on Wednesday evening at Tech CU Arena.

San Jose has lost four games in a row and are tied for the fifth spot with the Calgary Wranglers in the Pacific Division after the Wranglers 4-3 win over the Tucson Roadrunners tonight. Ontario has won three games in a row and clinched a playoff berth as they are four points behind the Colorado Eagles for the top spot in the division.

Ontario (39-22-3-1-82 points) scored two goals in the opening 32 seconds of the first period. Both goals were a result of turnovers inside the Barracuda zone. First Samuel Fagemo intercepted a clearing attempt by Cuda goaltender Gabriel Carriere and found Andre Lee out in the slot and Lee buried a wrist shot top shelf for his fifth goal of the season at the :20 mark.

Then 12 seconds later a giveaway by Danil Gushchin led to Glen Gawdin feeding Martin Chromiak who fired a one-timer past Carriere for his 14th goal of the season. It could not have a been a worse start for San Jose.

San Jose (32-24-5-4-73 points) cut the lead in half with a short-handed goal just under five minutes later. Patrick Giles, who made his Cuda debut, intercepted a pass from Caleb Jones in the neutral zone. Giles skated in and beat Reign goaltender Phoenix Copley Cuda with a wrist shot to the stick side for his sixth goal of the season and first in a Barracuda sweater.

Carriere made a huge save at the 7:02 mark when Charles Hudon came in on a breakaway attempt after i intercepting a pass at the Cuda blueline. Hudon dropped the puck back Chromiak, but Carriere stopped the point-blank chance.

The Barracuda evened the game late in the opening frame with its second special team’s goal. While on the power play, a clearing attempt by Ontario’s Taylor Ward caromed off of the referee. Luca Cagnoni picked up the puck from behind the net and tucked home the puck with a wraparound for an unassisted goal, his 14th of the season at the 15:34 mark. Cagnoni has 10 power play goals and leads the league with 32 power play points.

Ontario regained the lead with an even strength goal in the second period. Aatu Jamsen’s initial shot down low near the crease was stopped by Carriere’s skate but Jamsen cleaned up his own rebound to the short side for his seventh goal of the season at the 8:21 mark. Francesco Pinelli and Reilly Walsh were credited with assists.

Copley finished the game stopping 36 of the 38 shots he faced to earn his 22nd win of the season. Carriere made 16 saves on 19 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-5 on the power play. Ontario went 0-for-2.
