Sacramento A’s Relocation podcast Daniel Dullum: With A’s finalizing Coliseum sale with AASEG will pro sports ever return to Oakland?

The African American Sports Entertainment Group has purchased the second half of the Oakland Coliseum from the Sacramento A’s for $125 million. AASEG plans to do a $5 billion renovation of the Coliseum Complex as announced on Tue Jul 29, 2025 in a press conference at the Coliseum. (ABC Sky 7 News still)

Sacramento A’s Relocation podcast Daniel Dullum:

#1 The team formerly known as the Oakland A’s received approval on Tuesday to sell $125 million it’s share of the Oakland Coliseum to the African American Sports Entertainment Group. AASEG had bought the A’s half and previously had bought the other half of the Coliseum from Alameda County.

#2 The Alameda County Board of Supervisors took it to a vote and voted unanimously to approve the sale and plan to transfer the ownership for major sports and entertainment to AASEG who are focused on community development.

#3 After years of waiting the sale finally brings years of waiting to conclusion and the sale is expected to close on June 30, 2026. The CEO of Loop Capital James Reynolds who is the financer for AASEG said, “We are pleased to achieve this long awaited milestone.”

#4 Currently the Oakland Coliseum is hosting three teams-two sports. San Francisco Unicorns Cricket, the Oakland Soul (USL W League), and the Oakland Roots (USL M League). There is no doubt the AASEG plans to build at the Coliseum it’s just too bad they can’t get another MLB team there.

#5 Oakland Supervisor Nat Miley said at the press conference on Tuesday for the announcement of the Coliseum sale to AASEG that the loss of three professional is heartbreaking, that losing the A’s, Raiders, and Warriors is something that Miley couldn’t have imagined.

#1 Tough opener last Sunday for the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders had a 7-6 lead over the Los Angeles Chargers but just couldn’t generate enough offense to get some insurance with the Chargers leading 9-7 in the fourth quarter they scored two touchdowns and put the game out of reach winning it 22-10. Can the Raiders regroup their offense and look to quarterback Gardner Minshew to help create some yards and scoring against a tough Baltimore Ravens defense.

#2 The San Francisco 49ers who won their opener last Sunday with authority over the New York Jets 32-19. The Jets quarterback Aaron Rogers could only do so much as the 49ers defense put him on the run all day and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was mobile throwing for 231 yards. The 49ers are in Minnesota to face former teammate and Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. Charlie talk about the 49ers in that Jets win last Sunday and will Darnold get enough protection from the 49ers defense today?

#3 The Chicago White Sox are just five games behind tying the 1962 New York Mets who lost 120 games that season a current MLB record. The White Sox on Saturday night ended their seven game losing streak defeating the Oakland A’s 7-6 with the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth the Sox Andrew Benintendi hit a walk off home run for the win.

#4 The San Francisco Giants have been shutout for 27 consecutive innings having been shutout in three consecutive games and getting shutout by the San Diego Padres on Saturday night at Oracle Park 8-0. The Padres used three pitchers to combine for the shutout. Padres starter Joe Musgrove was sharp pitching six innings, allow just three hits.

#5 Charlie, wanted to ask you about the 1530 KFBK Sacramento report last Thursday regarding baseball agents Steve Boras saying that the idea of moving the A’s to Sutter Health Field in Sacramento should be rethought because it’s a health and safety issue to have players worth millions of dollars risking injury playing on a artificial surface. Also the facilities at Sutter Health are minor league no matter how much you try to remodel the park in the off season. Boras added that the A’s should go back to the Oakland Coliseum and negotiate with new Coliseum property owner the African American Sports Entertainment Group and get a good deal to stay at the Coliseum. Also the Major League Players Association has not signed off agreeing to play in Sacramento.

Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson: Boras says health and safety at issue with playing in Sacramento; Agent says A’s should work out deal with AASEG to stay in Oakland

On the Oakland A’s podcast with Jeremiah Salmonson:

#1 Construction at Sutter Health Park is being worked on for the clubhouses, weight rooms, family facilities, press boxes, and seats at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento to get it ready for both the Sacramento River Cats and Sacramento A’s for 2025.

#2 With the latest wrinkle last Thursday when baseball agent Scott Boras said the players are not on board with the upgrades including artificial turf being installed due to it raising the temperature on the field. Boras said that Sutter Health Park would be the only artificial turf outdoor stadium in MLB and with players being worth millions of dollars they could get burned sliding on the hot turf causing significant injuries.

#3 Another issue like the public funding in Las Vegas for the A’s Las Vegas ballpark the A’s need to get their share of the construction costs in order before the December deadline or that funding from the State of Nevada goes away . With the Sacramento ballpark if the players and MLB can’t get to a middle ground on playing the next four seasons on artificial turf and playing in a minor league stadium that also could end up being a stalemate.

#4 Boras said one of the best solutions is for the A’s to go back to the Oakland Coliseum where the players want to finish up at until the Las Vegas ballpark is built (if at all). Another scenario the new Oakland Coliseum property owners the African American Sports Entertainment Group can offer the A’s a good rental deal to come back and play at the Coliseum and offer to help build a stadium at the Coliseum.

#5 Baseball Commissioner said there is no deal in Oakland, Oakland is a dead issue, and MLB does not want to play at the Oakland Coliseum anymore. This is where the Players Association and MLB might hit a fork in the road over forcing the players to play in an outdoor minor league stadium with artificial turf and minor league facilities vs. getting back to Coliseum which the MLBPA want to play out until the Las Vegas scenario is worked out. This is a scenario that could go sideways and hold up the Sacramento relocation.

#1 The Chicago White Sox are making headlines for all the wrong reasons and general manager Chris Getz changed managers because of it. After the Sox ended a 21 game losing streak short of tying the major league record on Tue 6th Getz fired manager Pedro Grifol and replaced him with Grady Sizemore who had been a coach.

#2 Sizemore said he was surprised and excited when he was offered the job. There was no doubt that Getz wanted to take the Sox in a different direction. Sizemore said he is a different voice and is a different person. In Sizemore’s first game at the helm on Friday he lost to crosstown rivals the Chicago Cubs 7-6.

#3 Matthew Bowyer who was the bookie for Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter Ippei Mizuhara pleaded guilty to running an illegal gambling business. Bowyer also plead guilty to money laundering and filing a false tax return. Mizuhara who used Ohtani’s money to place bets is recorded as winning $142 million and losing $183 million a net loss of $41 million. There was no evidence that Mizuhara bet on baseball. It was found that Mizuhara was tied to Bowyer in placing 100s of bets.

#4 The long anticipated return of Dodgers infielder Mookie Betts has arrived. Betts has been out of the Dodgers line up since June 16th with a fractured left hand. Betts will start in rightfield rather than at shortstop next week. Betts making the return at the stretch drive of the campaign and manager Dave Roberts has to be relieved to get him back in the line up.

#5 This week the African American Sports and Entertainment Group sewed up a deal with the Oakland A’s buying their half of the Oakland Coliseum property making them sole owners. AASEG says they plan to develop the property as giant entertainment and sports complex. If AASEG were able to develop a stadium that would rival say a So Fi or Allegiant Stadium would that give them enough leverage to get the attention of luring back an NFL something that AASEG said they wanted to do going into the deal. On the face of it AASEG does not have the money to build an NFL stadium but they have been pretty ambitious in their ideas of developing the Coliseum.

#1 It hasn’t been done since the 1932 St Louis Cardinals did it coming back from a four run deficit on the road in three consecutive games but the 2024 San Francisco Giants pulled it off with three straight come back wins on the road they did it against in Pittsburgh Wed 22 and Thu 23, then in New York Fri 24.

#2 A replacement for the sawed off Jackie Robinson statue in Wichita Kansas at McAdams Park. The statue of the first black Major League Player in the history of the game was sawed off from the ankles for it’s bronze value. Wichita Firefighters found the statue in a trash can about 7 miles from the park. One of the suspects has pleaded guilty to the vandalism and it as later found out the purpose was not for racist hate but for the bronze scrap metal. The good news is a replacement statue is nearly finished from the Art Castings Studio in Loveland Colorado.

#3 Charlie, in his first game back in San Diego former San Diego Padre Juan Soto returned as a New York Yankee after being traded in the off season. Soto belted his 14th home run of the season off Padres pitcher Yu Darvish a 423 blast over the center right field fence. The Yankees added two more home runs from Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the 8-0 victory for New York to open the series.

#4 Charlie simply put is the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani too good of a hitter to ever pitch again. So far this season Ohtani has 69 hits, 13 home runs, and hitting .340. Shohei is on the shelf for the rest of the season from pitching due to off season surgery. There is the discussion that the two way act might have seen better days and Ohtani will stick to just being the DH.

#5 Charlie, the Oakland Coliseum home of the Oakland A’s at least till the end of this season has been sold to the group African American Sports and Entertainment at 50% of the property whose goal is to build retail, housing, host pro soccer, and get an NFL expansion team. Meanwhile the A’s who own the other half of the Coliseum proper are reportedly willing to talk to AASEG about selling their half as the A’s will be leaving for Sacramento and later Las Vegas.

#1 Things are changing quickly at the Oakland Coliseum as East Bay developer African American Sports and Entertainment Group or AASEG will be buying 50% of the Oakland Coliseum property from the city of Oakland at the cost of $105 million. The Oakland A’s are leaving the Coliseum for Sacramento after they complete the 2024 season on September 30th.

#2 For the city of Oakland the money is considered a Godsend as the city is bleeding in budget deficits to the tune of $177 million. The $105 will be a good comb over to save city services and job cuts.

#3 AASEG will have half ownership that includes the Oakland Arena. The Arena has been hosting Disney Ice Shows and concerts. There is no doubt that AASEG will put the arena to good use. Once it takes over. They were hoping for a WNBA team but with San Francisco getting a WNBA team that may not happen now.

#4 With the departures of the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas, the Oakland A’s to Sacramento and later to Las Vegas, and Golden State Warriors to San Francisco AASAEG hopes to bring back some life back to both the Arena and the Oakland Coliseum. The Oakland Roots and Oakland Soul soccer teams plan to share the Coliseum for pro soccer in 2025. The big questions how much the A’s will go along with some of AASEG’s dreams, plans and ideas?

#5 The city originally want to sell the entire site to the A’s. The A’s were on board at the time of buying the Coliseum in whole but once they decided to move to Las Vegas they purchased just half of the Coliseum. The big question now lies with AASEG owning half of the Coliseum property and the A’s the other half and if Las Vegas and Sacramento falls through could the Coliseum get back into the picture again?

#1 Amaury, Alameda County’s sale on half it’s share at the Oakland Coliseum is due to go through on May 14 when the Oakland A’s are scheduled to make the final payment of the property at $85 million. However a lawsuit has been filed in Alameda County court for Sep 24.

#2 The lawsuit filed by Communities for a Better Environment who are a California non profit environmental health group say that team owner John Fisher in the sales agreement ignored the Surplus Land Act which is mandated by state law.

#3 The A’s who purchased half of the Coliseum site back in 2019 in the event that if their new ballpark site at Howard Terminal falls through they could go back to the Coliseum. The A’s later claimed the Coliseum was unfit for baseball but the A’s plan to continue with the purchase.

#4 The A’s are currently in negotiations to sell their half interest to Oakland group the African American Sports and Entertainment Group. AASEG is also negotiating with the City of Oakland to purchase their half of their interest to develop, residential, commercial and sports.

#5 Ruby Acevedo an attorney for the environment group CBE said the county could argue that the SLA is regularly ignored statewide however Acevedo state there is case law that the counties would take demand letters seriously. CBE is asking for the county to engage in housing development for affordable housing. Affordable housing was an issue with Fisher when it was a requirement for his ballpark village at Howard Terminal.
