2026 World Series: Brewers vs. Rays  Battle of the Small Markets

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The 122nd edition of Major League’s Fall Classic begins Friday. Once in a while (not often enough), baseball becomes the fairest of any sport. That is the case in 2026, with two excellent teams opening in Milwaukee this week for a best-of-7 series against Tampa Bay. It’s the first time these two teams have met in a World Series. The Brewers have never won a World Series; the Milwaukee Braves won their first title in 1957.

–Milwaukee. Is the smallest television and media market in Major League Baseball (MLB), ranking 30th out of 30 teams. The Milwaukee Brewers led the major leagues and the National League with 103 regular-season wins and, most importantly, did something nobody expected: they swept the two-time in-a-row World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

World Series history. 1957 Milwaukee Braves won vs. NY Yankees 4-3… 1958 Braves vs. NY Yankees lost 3-4… 1982 Milwaukee Brewers lost vs. St. Louis Cardinals 3-4. The Brewers have never won a World Series; the city of Milwaukee won its first World Series title in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves.

City of Milwaukee population: 502,000

–Tampa Bay is MLB’s 19th-largest television and media market. The Rays led the American League East (considered one of, if not the, elite divisions) with the Yankees and Red Sox. The Rays won 98 regular-season games, tops in the American League.

World Series history: 2008 vs. Philadelphia, lost 1-4. 2020 vs. LA Dodgers, lost 2-4. Note:2020: In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the World Series was played at a neutral site (Globe Life Field in Arlington) for the first time.

City of Tampa population: 417,635

Player to watch in this World Series.

Milwaukee’s 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Jacob Misioroswki, the best pitcher in baseball, will win the National League Cy Young Award. His numbers: 16-5, 1.80 ERA, 174.2 Innings pitched, and 252 strikeouts. He owns a lethal 4-seam fastball, which he throws at a record-average 101 to 105 mph, with a terrific curveball. The kid is 6’7″, 200 lbs. He should start Game #1 this Friday.

I am not predicting this, but just saying: there’s only been one perfect game in World Series history, thrown by Yankee pitcher Don Larsen in the 1956 World Series, when he retired all 27 Brooklyn Dodgers. If Misioroswki shows up with his best stuff… Who knows? Misioroski could throw a perfecto anytime, anywhere, including the World Series.

My prediction: Milwaukee in 6.

“I always got nervous the nights we played in the World Series. First pitch, I was nervous. Then after that, forget it; I’d start playing.”  -Yogi Berra.

Sharks Rally to Win 4-3 in OT Against Canadiens

San Jose Sharks Macklin Celebrini (71) celebrates his goal over Les Montreal Canadiens with teammates Igor Chernyshov (92), Nolan Allan (5), and Will Smith (2) during the first period at the Belle Centre in Montreal on Tue Oct 20, 2026 (Canadian Press photo via AP)

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday. Macklin Celebrini, Michael Misa and Tyler Toffoli scored for the Sharks. Alex Nedeljkovic made 31 saves for the win. Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovský and Cole Caulfield scored for the Canadiens. Jakub Dobes made 26 saves in the loss.

The Sharks were down 3-1 at the start of the third period but recovered in the third to force overtime. After the game, Michael Misa talked about the late turn-around:

“I think we were just connected, playing desperate like especially with the puck in their zone, we were forechecking hard, playing through their… you know, they’ve got a lot of skilled D over there so you try to play through them and make them turn over pucks. And I thought we did a good job of that in the third.”

Macklin Celebrini scored the first goal of the game at 13:49 of the first period. Jake Evans had the puck along the boards in Montreal’s zone and Will Smith was pressuring him. He made a pass that Celebrini intercepted, leading to a snap shot from the slot. It was Celebrini’s fourth goal of the season.

Nick Suzuki tied the game at 16:38. Gathering up a stray puck in the neutral zone, Juraj Slafkovský carried the puck into the zone two-on-one with Suzuki. Slafkovský chose to pass and Suzuki scored from just inside the faceoff circle.

The first period shots were 12-10 Montreal. The Sharks took two penalties in the period, allowing one shot to the Montreal power play and mustering one short-handed shot.

Slafkovský made it 2-1 with a snap shot at 1:49. He carried the puck into the zone at speed, skated to the net and snapped it in. An assist went to Cole Caulfield.

Caulfield scored at 14:03 to make it 3-1. He caught Suzuki’s pass from behind the net to snap the puck into the net. Assists went to Suzuki and Phillip Danault.

The shots in the second period were 11-10 Montreal. The penalties were numerous but mostlly came from one scrum at 11:57. Four minors were handed out at that time, two to each team. The Sharks were the only team to be short-handed in the second with one penalty at 17:27.

Michael Misa started the comeback at 5:36 of the third period. Misa and Kiefer Sherwood drove the play out of the Sharks’ zone and carried the puck to the other end. Misa’s snap shot beat the goalie on the stick side.

There were three penalties handed out at 9:33 of the third, giving the Sharks a power play. Tyler Toffoli made good use of that and scored the tying goal at 11:09. Celebrini sold a slap shot and instead passed it to Toffoli in the middle for the shot. An assist also went to Jacob Trouba.

The shots in the third were 11-8 Canadiens.

Jakub Dobes was called for interfering with Collin Graf at 1:53 of overtime. At 2:13, Celebrini took his shot from above the faceoff dot off a pass from Ivar Stenberg. An assist also went to Will Smith.

The Sharks next play on Thursday at 4:00 PM PT in Ottawa against the Senators.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast Rich Perez: Could Jeanty receive less playing time?

Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty (2) is stopped by the Buffalo Bills linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr (52), cornerback Dee Alford (33), and safety Cole Bishop (24) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Sun Oct 18, 2026 (AP News photo)

Las Vegas Raiders podcast Rich Perez:

#1 Las Vegas Raiders (3-3) had an opportunity to score at the 4:12 mark but were three and out after the Buffalo Bills (5-1) scored and the Raiders couldn’t answer back to tie up the game in the fourth quarter.

#2 The Bills pretty much controlled the offense with two ten point quarters in each of the second and third quarters. Bills quarterback Josh Allen was 23-33 for 255 yards, and two touchdowns he got some time to throw Sunday.

#3 The third quarter the Raiders were completely shutout and couldn’t execute any scoring opportunities and was a costly quarter. Now there is talk that running back Ashton Jeanty who carried 22 yards on ten carries could lost playing time to running back Mike Washington?

#4 Raiders starting quarterback Kirk Cousins for the afternoon 22-40 for 269 yards and one touchdown throw but not enough of them to get past the Bills.

#5 Raiders Tre Tucker caught a 44 yard pass from Cousins up the middle with at 1:32 getting the Raiders within 3 points. The 33-30 loss is the Raiders third loss in a row.

#6 Next up for the Raiders the Los Angeles Rams at Allegiant Stadium and the Raiders need to spruce up the run game to get a shot to get back in the win column.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Cleveland missed a Chance to make History

Cleveland missed a Chance to make History

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

They were the Cleveland Indians for most of their history; they last won a World Series in 1948. Harry S. Truman (who ended WWII) was president of the US.   Changed their name from Indians to Guardians in 2021, a politically correct move; many still call them the Indians. How big of a baseball town is Cleveland? They rank toward the bottom among all 30 teams in media markets; they rank #21 among all 30 teams in the Major Leagues. In 1982, when Milwaukee was in the American League, they reached the World Series but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals.

This 2026 season, Cleveland won the weakest division in baseball, the American League Central, with 85 wins, then beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in a best-of-five American League Division Series. After defeating the White Sox 3-2 in the ALDS (which concluded on Saturday, October 10), the Guardians advanced to the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, who won the East Division by beating the Yankees.  They needed to beat Tampa Bay to reach the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, who won the National League pennant. The Tampa Bay Rays dominated the Guardians, winning the series 4-2.

With everything on the line, Cleveland had a shot at reaching this year’s World Series for the first time in 45 years, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I have traveled to Cleveland many times to broadcast baseball and basketball while working for the Golden State Warriors as their Spanish announcer. It is a great city, but it still falls short in baseball. A very famous franchise was once owned by Hall of Fame comedian Bob Hope; he made a living making jokes about how bad the team was.

He was a great friend and movie partner. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby made seven films together, including the famous “Road” films, and Crosby owned the Pittsburgh Pirates from the 1940’s to the late 1970s. Crosby was a very popular singer, unlike Hope, who was a Comedian and a dancer. Every time they met, they would talk about the teams they owned. Historians say it was all in good fun. The Cleveland Cavaliers of the NBA were the last professional team to win a League Title for the city..

As for the World Series coming up in a few days, I believe the Milwaukee Brewers will win. The National League outperformed the American League in most categories this season. How about this two small market teams; Milwaukee vs Tampa Bay. Two teams who had great seasons in their respective leagues and two teams that have never won a World Series and he two teams that were the best all season long.

Utah Mammoth game wrap: Mammoth Outlast Late Penguins Surge in 5-4 Victory

Mon Oct 19, 2026

SALT LAKE CITY– The Utah Mammoth (6-3-0) struggled to protect a 3 goal lead in the third period, but hung onto for the 5-4 win and reclam the top spot in the Central Division Monday night beating the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-5-1).

The Utah Mammoth wrapped up a brief two-game homestand Monday night at Delta Center, hosting the Penguins. It was the first time Pittsburgh natives Vincent Trocheck and Logan Cooley squared off as teammates against their childhood hometown team.

Per the Mammoth stat crew, Trocheck (241-394-635 in 878 GP) and Cooley (70-90-160 in 221 GP) rank first and sixth among Pennsylvania-born players in career NHL points. Trocheck played in the Pittsburgh Hornets youth hockey program when he was 9-years-old, and Cooley participated in the first year of Sidney Crosby’s “Little Penguins Learn to Play” program at the age of five and later played youth hockey for Pittsburgh Penguins Elite.

Coming off of Saturday’s 6-2 spanking against Edmonton, Utah entered the night one point back of the Minnesota Wild in the Central Division race. Just 19 seconds into the game, Pittsburgh went on the power play as Dylan Guenther was sent to the sin bin for tripping against Blake Lizotte.

Less than a minute later, defenseman Erik Karlsson gave the Penguins an early lead with his first goal of the season, assisted by Bryan Rust and Tommy Novak.

Utah captain Clayton Keller tied things up at the six-minute mark with a backhand which got past Arturs Silovs for his fourth goal  of the season, assisted by Lawson Crouse and Nick Schmaltz. Halfway through the frame, Mammoth defenseman Mikhail Sergachev put the puck on net with the rebound going to Kevin Stenlund at the top of the crease.

Stenlund’s shot attempt was batted away by Silovs but banked off the stick of Pittsburgh defensman Declan Carlile right back to Stenlund who swatted the puck past Silovs for his first goal of the season, with Sergachev and Jack McBain credited on the assists as Utah took its first lead of the night 2-1.

The Mammoth dominated puck possession in the first period, peppering Silovs with sixteen shots while rookie netminder Sebastian Cossa turned away five of six for Utah.At 6:53 of the second period, Keller was whistled for high sticking against Spencer Stastney to give the Penguins their second power play opportunity of the night, and Pittsburgh forward Rickard Rakell exploited it eight seconds later to record his first goal of the season, assisted by Rust and Karlsson, to even the score at 2-2.

Utah defenseman Nate Schmidt responded with his own first goal of the season, putting a slap shot past Silovs, assisted by Stenlund and Daniil But, as the Mammoth took the lead 3-2. Three minutes later, Kailer Yamamoto tipped in a shot from Schmidt for his second goal of the season to increase the Utah lead to 4-2, with McBain picking up his second assist on the night.

Silovs stopped seven of nine Mammoth shots in the frame, while Cossa turned away six of seven. As the third period began, Pittsburgh forward Blake Lizotte took his turn in the penalty box for tripping against Trocheck.  Utah forward Nick Schmaltz took advantage of the power play opportunity to net his seventh goal of the young season on a backhand shot, assisted by Keller and Cooley, to give the Mammoth what seemed like a comfortable 5-2 lead.

Unfortunately for Utah, three goal leads in the third period are never a guarantee of anything, and the Penguins continued to press and mount a comeback. At 2:55 of the frame, Pittsburgh forward Egor Chinakhov registered his second goal of the season, assisted by

Andrei Kuzmenko and Spencer Stastney, to narrow the Mammoth lead to 5-3. With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Carlile brought the Penguins to within one with his third goal of the season, assisted by Rakell and Kaedan Korczak, as Delta Center fans began to hold their collective breaths.

Sebastian Cossa stood tall down the stretch turning away multiple scoring chances by Pittsburgh to hang on for the win in his first career home start, finishing the game with 15 saves as Utah improved to 7-3-0 on the season and leapfrogged over the Minnesota Wild for the Central Division lead. Had the Penguins managed to send the game into overtime,

Utah would have risked the possibility of the team’s first shootout since the end of the 2024-2025 season when they were still known as just the Utah Hockey Club. They are now closing in on nearly 100 consecutive games without a shootout.

In the Utah locker room, first star of the game Nate Schmidt spoke of the team’s bouncing back from Saturday’s loss to Edmonton. “I just liked our directness, especially early in the game, and especially after the goals,” Schmidt began. “We talked a little bit about it in between periods, especially after they scored on their two power-play goals. I loved how we were able to direct our next couple of shifts, and I just love the way that we can kind of gain that momentum back because that really does change the hockey game and change the way that your team feels when you’re in a situation where you give up a goal.”

On his team’s energy, Schmidt said, “One of the things we talked about yesterday, especially as a D-Core, was just listen: We got a ton of skilled forwards; let’s get them the puck early, especially in the neutral zone. Let’s try a half-ice game as much as we can. When we drag it back, we get in a little bit more trouble, and it allows them to set their defense up, especially in their neutral zone forecheck. So I thought, especially in the first and second, we did a really good job with that. And as the game went on in the third, we got a little bit away from it, but even when they scored, there was no panic on the bench.”Winning netminder Sebastian Cossa, on getting his first win at home, said, “It was big. The guys played really well tonight. It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but at the end of day (we) got the win, so that’s the most important thing.”

When asked how he stayed calm going through long  periods without facing a shot (Pittsburgh managed only 6-7 shots per period on the night), Cossa said, “Trying to stay in it mentally. When you got a good team like that, we (had) a lot of possession of the puck and keeping it in their zone, so that’s nice, but got a little bored and a little cold down there on one end. Just continuing trying to move and just trying to stay in it mentally.”

The young goalie was asked what it was like facing some of the NHL’s biggest names over the past few games. He responded, “It’s pretty awesome, obviously. As a Canadian, watching (Erik) Karlsson and (Sidney) Crosby my whole life, so really cool experience. (Connor) McDavid last game, and (Sidney) Crosby this game, so every game is a new experience and new challenge. So it’s cool.”

His first thoughts after the final save of the game: “Pretty excited. I was like, ‘Is the game over yet?’ So I saw the puck go out, and then there’s quite a bit of bodies in front of me. So make sure that we get the win, and then Weegs (MacKenzie Weegar) and Schmidty (Nate Schmidt) were right there.

So pretty awesome.”Utah Mammoth Head Coach André Tourigny opened his media remarks, saying, “Great, great win by Coss. Good to get a win in front of our fans for him. I think Desi (Nick DeSimone) as well played well for a guy who did not play since the start of the season.

To jump in after a lot of practice time. Happy about his performance. That was good, and a heck of a performance from our fourth line. I think Stenny (Kevin Stenlund), Buter (Daniil But), and Bainer (Jack McBain) played rock-solid, physical, simple, and effective.

Really, really happy about their game.” On Cossa’s performance in his first home win, Bear said, “the game has to slow down for him, you know. And right now, the game is probably fast for him, and he gets surprised in some situations and stuff like that. And when we say that, it has nothing to do with your ability to play in that league. It’s the ability to relax, settle down, and be comfortable. It’s just that. So I think he wants to do great, won a big game for us. Happy, get back on his feet, get his leg under himself, and now try to get into a better rhythm.”

The Mammoth (7-3-0) now head off for a single road game against the Seattle Kraken (5-3-1) before returning for a pair beginning Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Minnesota Wild.

Valkyries lose Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, Atlanta Dream ties the series 1-1

SAN FRANCISCO – Atlanta Dream Angel Reese (#5) shows her excitement as the Atlanta Dream win Game 2 of the WNBA Finals in a WNBA basketball game at Chase Center in San Francisco, CA, on October 19th, 2026(Photo credit: Getty Images)

By Michael Villanueva

SAN FRANCISCO – Ballhalla welcomed and hosted Game 2 of the WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream. The Valkyries took Game 1 on Saturday afternoon, 68-64. But a new day, a new game, and Atlanta lived up to it as the Dream got their first win of the Finals on the road over Golden State, 79-65. This loss was the Valkyries’ first time at home in this postseason, while the win for Atlanta was their first-ever Finals win.

After getting Golden State’s first-ever win in the WNBA Finals. Head coach Natalie Nakase has a lot of pride and respect for her starters, so she didn’t wanna change any of that. Nakase started Kayla Thornton, Cecilia Zandalasini, Kiah Stokes, Gabby Williams, and Veronica Burton. Williams scored a game-high 26 points for Golden State to give them the 1-0 series lead.

Atlanta’s head coach Karl Smesko, in his second year coaching in the WNBA, wasn’t concerned about the Dream’s Game 1 loss to the Valkyries. Coach Smesko believes and knows his team can make their shots in Game 1 when it was crunch time, but Atlanta couldn’t get over Golden State’s defense. So Coach Smesko went with the same group for the starters: Naz Hillmon, Angel Reese, Allisha Gray, Jordin Canada, and Rhyne Howard.

In the first quarter of the game, things were looking great for the Valkyries. Atlanta’s Angel Reese would get the game going with a made layup to have the Dream strike first in Ballhalla. Golden State’s Kaila Charles would sub in and, in just three minutes, would have 6 points after making two three-pointers for the Valkyries. At the end of the first quarter, Charles’ shooting off the bench helped give the Valkyries the lead, 21-18.

Heading into the second quarter, Atlanta was starting to build a rhythm, and they went with it. Especially with help from Angel Reese and Alisha Gray. Gray scored 8 points, and Reese scored 7 points by themselves. Gray also knocked down two big three-pointers for Atlanta, and their shooting gave the Dream the lead. Heading into halftime, the score was 39-37; the Valkyries were down by 2 points.

Coming back from halftime, the Valkyries were struggling in the third quarter. Golden State dropped 16 points in the second quarter, but came back in the third. The Valkyries were only able to score just 9 points. Atlanta took advantage of the Valkyries’ poor shooting and was able to extend their lead and play comfortably in Chase Center. Also, the Valkyries would foul the Dream seven times alone in the third quarter; they would finish with 23 fouls by the end of the game. Right before the end, Atlanta’s Jordin Canada would make a three-pointer at the logo to get her team hyped going into the final quarter of play.

In the final quarter, Atlanta’s lead was starting to get bigger over Golden State. Four minutes in, Dream got their largest lead in the night over the Valkyries by 21 points, 69-48. The Valkyries were having a hard time not fouling, and their shots weren’t going in for them. With under a minute left in the game, the Valkyries were down by 15 points. With time not on their side, the Valkyries were trying to move fast, but Jordin Canada got fouled with 40 seconds left and was able to put away Golden State for Atlanta.

The Atlanta Dream came back into Ballhalla and got the win in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals. Atlanta was led by Angel Reese, who recorded a double-double: 30 points, 16 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Reese’s performance helped Atlanta tie the series with Golden State. Valkyries will play Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta. Game 3 will be on October 21st at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Peacock, USA Network, and CNBC.
