Santa Cruz Starts Fast but Third-Quarter Collapse Sinks the Night 131-118

By Brien Gingrich, Santa Cruz Voice

SANTA CRUZ–6:59 PM. Kaiser Permanente Arena hums again for night two of the back-to-back. This time, Santa Cruz opens with control and confidence.

1st Quarter. The Warriors jump out 5–0 before Rip City even finds the rim. They move the ball crisply, attack early, and keep the crowd engaged from the start. Santa Cruz leads wire-to-wire through the frame, closing the first up 30–26.

2nd Quarter. The offense continues to click. Trey Galloway finishes in traffic, L.J. Cryer runs the pace, and Marques Bolden controls the paint. The Warriors stretch the lead to ten midway through the period before the Remix close the gap. Santa Cruz heads to halftime up 64–62, shooting nearly 49 percent from the field and 37 percent from deep.

3rd Quarter. Then comes the undoing. Rip City catches fire, pouring in 42 points to Santa Cruz’s 23. Dillon Jones and Javonte Cooke take over, combining for timely buckets that flip the game. Missed rotations and turnovers pile up, and the Remix seize control. What had been a tight contest turns into a 17-point deficit, 104–87, heading to the fourth.

4th Quarter. The Warriors keep swinging. Cryer stays aggressive, Galloway drives through contact, and Bolden grinds on the boards. They cut the lead to single digits more than once, but Rip City always answers. The Remix hit 46 percent from the floor and hold firm at the line, pushing the margin back out in the closing minutes.

Final. Rip City Remix 131, Santa Cruz Warriors 118. Cryer led the Warriors with 22 points and 5 assists; Galloway added 21; Bolden 18; Ethan Taylor and Jack Clark 13 each. Santa Cruz shot 46 percent overall but couldn’t recover from the 42–23 third-quarter swing.

Kings Embarrassed by Wolves 144-117 as Doug Christie Demands Defensive Standard

DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO — The Kings welcomed the Minnesota Timberwolves to Sacramento on Sunday night. The Kings, mired in a slow start to the season, failed to bounce back as they fell to the Wolves 144-117 in embarrassing fashion in front of a booing Golden 1 Center crowd.

In the first quarter, the Kings shot well from the perimeter, but that was about it. The Kings shot at a 54% clip from beyond the arc but only 37% overall from the field. The Kings struggled to get downhill and finish at the rim, which led to a 31-25 Wolves lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Timberwolves shot the inverse of the Kings, as they had a 36% clip from beyond the arc and shot 57% overall from the field. Zach LaVine and Rudy Gobert got started early, scoring nine and eight points respectively to start the game.

In the second quarter, the Kings battled but couldn’t contain the Wolves. The Wolves outscored the Kings 40-29 to take a 71-54 halftime lead. The Kings’ defense failed on all fronts to stop the Wolves as they were getting contributions up and down the bench. Rudy Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and Julius Randle combined for 41 points in the first half.

Zach LaVine led all scorers as he dropped 17 first half points for the Kings. The Kings’ swiss cheese defense was letting them down again as they tried to battle against the Wolves and keep the game close going into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Wolves continued to pressure the Kings and didn’t let up. The Kings were blown off the court again in the third as they were outscored 40-30 to take a 111-84 deficit into the final 12 minutes of action. Kings fans had seen enough in the third as boos and “We want Keon” chants filled the arena.

In the fourth quarter, for the second game in a row, Keon Ellis checked in for the first time in the game to start the final quarter. However, the outcome of the game was all but decided as the Kings trailed by 27 points heading into the final frame. The Kings didn’t have much life to show in the fourth as both teams scored 33 points as the Kings lost 144-117.

The Timberwolves’ leading scorers in the game were Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels, who had 26 and 21 points respectively. For the Kings, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan led the way with 26 and 22 points respectively.

After the game, Kings HC Doug Christie spoke with the media. Doug was clear about his level of frustration with this group and their lack of defensive dedication night in and night out.

“First and foremost, you got to stop somebody,” Doug said after the game. “You got to take pride in that together. This is not golf. This ain’t no individual sport. This is a team sport, a collective sport. That’s why I say collective spirit.”

Doug continued to stress that the Kings will have a defensive identity. Whether he has the players for it or not, he stressed the Kings will hang their hat on the defensive end of the game.

“The Sacramento Kings are going to have a damn standard, period. As long as I’m here, there’s going to be a standard.”

Mike Brown and now Doug Christie have both found it impossible so far to convince this Kings group, led by Domantas Sabonis, to buy into a defensive identity. The Kings require a full roster overhaul before they will truly find a defensive identity.

Up Next: The Sacramento Kings will stay home to take on the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday at Golden 1 Center. The Kings and Nuggets will play in what will be the first night of a back-to-back for the Kings at 8 p.m. PST. The Kings will then take on the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PST.

When it comes to betting in professional sports, it looks like when it rains, it pours”. Now it’s MLB time. Just a few weeks ago, the FBI revealed its investigation into some NBA players and a coach of gambling during games, resulting in indictments and arrests of the defendants.

Now is Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortíz turn who were indicted on charges of alleged gambling misconduct, manipulating bets on individual pitches. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of New York, announced the indictment on Sunday at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn.

Ortíz was arrested in Boston for alleged gambling misconduct, specifically manipulating bets on individual pitches. Emmanuel Clase, the closer for the Guardians, was not in custody as of Sunday, when the charges were announced and the indictment unsealed.

The Department of Justice has charged the pair with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, and money laundering conspiracy.

This is a developing story, and it is just in the top of the first inning…

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: Nick Kurtz to Win the American League Rookie of the Year Award

Nick Kurtz to Win the American League Rookie of the Year Award

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

The 2025 American League Rookie of the Year will be officially announced this Monday, the 10th of November. It will be Nick Kurtz. It is a ‘fait accomply’ Nick Kurtz is the only MLB rookie in history to hit four home runs in a single game, achieving this feat on July 25, 2025, against the Houston Astros.

Had a marvelous rookie season. He hit .290, with 36 home runs and drove in 86 runs. The young first baseman for the A’s was one of just three players with at least 400 plate appearances and an OPS over 1,000, along with Silver Sluggers Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.

Kurtz gave the A’s their second straight season with a Silver Slugger Award, after Brent Rooker won at DH in 2024. Before that, it was Eric Chávez in 2002. The potential for this 22-year-old, 6’5″, 240 lbs left-handed hitter is as high as the sky, as well as the odds for Nick to win the American League Rookie of the Year.

Kurtz’ chances of winning the Rookie of the Year are very close to 100% chance. I will say it is inevitable; there are no other rookies in 2025 in the American League with the impact of Kurtz. The largest salary given to an Athletics player is $67 million, for pitcher Luis Severino, a three-year deal in 2024.

In the case of Kurtz, A’s owner Mr. Fisher might need another loan to pay the star if Kurtz continues to be the player he seems to be. However, the good news for the A’s, Kurtz is projected to become a free agent after 2031, heading into age 29.

His contract with this A’s will not expire until then. He also received a $7 million signing bonus when he was drafted in 2024. His salary is part of his pre-arbitration contract with the Oakland Athletics. He also received a $7 million singing bonus.

Oakland Athletics to win the Rookie of the Year Award. José Canseco (1986), Mark McGwire (1987), Walt Weiss (1988), Ben Grieve (1992), Bobby Crosby (2004), Huston Street (2005), Andrew Bailey (2009)

Note: 21 players in Major League Baseball history have hit four home runs in a single game. Kurtz will join the group alongside some of the game’s luminaries, including these two: Lou Gehrig and Willie Mays.

Sharks play inspired hockey to take down the champs Florida 3-1; SJ wins third game in a row

San Jose Sharks one two punch center Macklin Celebrini (71) and center Will Smith (2) celebrate Celebrini’s tenth goal of the season in the first period at SAP Center in San Jose on Sat Nov 8, 2025 (AP News photo)

By Lincoln Juarez

SAN JOSE, Calif. – SAP Center was rocking as the San Jose Sharks took down the back-to-back champion Florida Panthers thanks to a tremendous night on the penalty kill and Yaraslov Askarov turning away all but one shot he faced. Macklin Celebrini scored in his third straight game with his 10th of the season. As the Sharks pocket another big victory the second on back to back nights this time with a 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Coming off of a gritty 2-1 win Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets, the Sharks took the ice looking to sweep the set of back-to-back games on Saturday. The back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers stood as the tough task in the way of the Sharks. Both teams entered Saturday night with 15 points but the Panthers were heavily favored.

A spirited team teal played hard on the puck from the start, generating many scoring opportunities from the minute the puck dropped. The Sharks outshot the Panthers 14-6 in the first period including Macklin Celebrini’s 10th goal of the season to put the Sharks in the lead. Celebrini is atop the league list in scorers with 24 points on the young season. The young superstar has hammered the gas to start the season with no plans to slow down.

Linemate Will Smith found himself with the assist on Celebrini’s goal, as the two teamed up to net one for the second night in a row. It was Smith’s ninth assist of the year racking up 15 points just 16 games in.

The young core has sparked much excitement around San Jose, sending waves through the league while winning their third game in a row Saturday night and their sixth of the last eight. “I think we just feel like we can win any game,” said Mario Ferraro who blocked three shots in 22:44 time on ice and played a big part of the Sharks penalty kill that kept the Panthers scoreless as they went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.

An even bigger part of the penalty kill was Yaraslov Askarov, who stopped 38 of 39 shots and made some important saves in the third period. San Jose has boasted great goaltending in this recent stretch and both men in the crease have received great praise from the skaters in front of them.

Macklin Celebrini spoke very highly of Askarov and Nedeljkovic saying, “They’re doing such a great job for us… just making saves when we need them to… you say your goalie is your best penalty killer and they have been”.

The Sharks were not only great in their defensive end Saturday night, but also played a lot of valuable minutes in the offensive zone, racking up 23 shots on goal and cashing in on an Adam Gaudette deflection on a wrister from Dmitry Orlov in the second period to make it a 2-0 San Jose lead.

Brad Marchand answered back for the Panthers just seconds later to bring Florida within a goal but that was the closest they would get. The Sharks stayed strong defensively with sticks and bodies in every shooting and passing lane, blocking a total of 18 shots.

The display of inspired hockey lit up SAP Center Saturday night with a nearly sold out crowd making a strong impression on the team. “This was awesome. This was awesome spirit, I mean, I was like jeez… The boys love it. The team feels it”, described Yaraslov Askarov. When asked if he felt excitement growing around the Sharks, Askarov simply replied, “Yes”.

Capped off by an Alex Wennberg empty-netter, the Sharks won one of their most spirited games of the season, taking down the back-to-back champs 3-1. The excitement was definitely felt inside of SAP Center with high hopes for the upcoming stretch of the season.

The Sharks will be back in action Tuesday night in Minnesota and hope to just keep swimming through this fiery stretch of winning hockey.

Stockton Kings game wrap: Kings just couldn’t get past Clippers in 102-97 loss in opener

STOCKTON–The Stockton Kings took the court for the first time since being named G-League Champions on Saturday evening, as they hosted the San Diego Clippers. It was a close contest as the Clippers came away with a five point 102-97 win on opening night.

There’s been quite a bit of turnover during the offseason, as only a few players from the championship-winning squad returned, and there’s even a new face on the sideline, as Will Scott took over the reins as head coach.

Before the opening tip-off, the Kings unveiled their championship banner, and returning guard Dexter Dennis spoke to the crowd.

Once the game got underway and the festivities were concluded, it was back to business as usual for the Kings. Undrafted Sacramento Kings prospect Dylan Cardwell, out of Auburn, got the Kings’ first points of the new campaign.

The Clippers got out to an early, but small lead, but before long, the Kings had tied things up. Toward the end of the first quarter, the Kings went on a 12-point run, which saw them take the largest lead so far in the matchup, 27-14. At the end of the first frame, Stockton led 34-18. Stockton maintained their double-digit lead through the second quarter, taking a 61-43 lead into halftime.

The Clippers would cut into the lead slightly early in the third quarter, but not nearly enough to put pressure on the Kings.

That would change late in the quarter, though, as at one point the lead was down to just seven points, marking the first time the Kings’ lead was down to single digits since the first quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was down to 77-72.

With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Clippers had cut the Kings’ lead down to just a single point and took their first lead since the opening frame moments later.

From there, the lead was traded back and forth, with neither side able to truly pull ahead of their opposition. Ultimately, the Kings would fall short to kick off their season, losing to the Clippers.

North Carolina held off a late Stanford rally on Saturday and defeated the Cardinal 20-15 in Atlantic Coast Conference football at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Stanford (3-7 overall, 2-5 ACC) lost despite outgaining the Tar Heels 320 total yards to 253 and holding the edge in time of possession – 32:37 to 27:23.

The Tar Heels (4-5 overall, 2-3 ACC) opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first quarter with a Rece Verhoff 27-yard field goal. Stanford tied the game at 3-3 on the final play of the first half, an Emmet Kenney field goal from 38 yards out.

UNC broke the deadlock at 7:43 of the third quarter when, on first down at the Cardinal 20-yard line, Gio Lopez completed a touchdown pass to Davion Gause, giving the Tar Heels a 10-3 lead.

Verhoff hit a field goal from 48 yards out at 4:16 of the fourth quarter, and Lopez completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipp, extending the Tar Heels lead to 20-3.

The Cardinal fought back, and with 8:28 remaining, Cole Tabb ran for a 1-yard touchdown, and with 1:48 to play, Elijah Brown, completed a 24-yard scoring pass to CJ Williams. The Cardinal failed to convert 2-point conversions.

Brown completed 27 of 39 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown. And was picked off once. He was also sacked nine times. Micah Ford was the Cardinal’s top rusher with 68 yards on 17 carries. Caden High caught 10 passes for 102 yards, and Williams and Sam Roush each made six receptions.

Lopez was 18 of 25 passing for 203 yards for UNC. He was sacked twice. As a team, the Tar Heels gained 50 yards on 27 attempts. Kobe Paysour caught six passes for 54 yards, and Shipp caught five for 83 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinal have a bye week before hosting California in the 28th Big Game on Saturday, Nov. 22. Kickoff time has yet to be announced.

Air Force takes advantage of SJSU turnovers and run right through the Spartans for a 26-16 Victory

Despite the San Jose State University Spartans hard efforts they fell ten points short for a win against the visiting Air Force Falcons at Spartan Stadium in San Jose on Sat Nov 8, 2025 (SJSU Spartans photo)

By Lincoln Juarez

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State turns the ball over three times in route to disappointing 26-16 loss to Air Force in conference battle. SJSU quarterbacks passed for 341 yards but did not pass for a touchdown as the lone endzone finder came via the struggling run game.

The Spartans kicked off a Mountain West matchup against Air Force Saturday afternoon at CEFCU Stadium. Coming in at 2-6 overall Air Force aimed for their second conference win of the season, while the Spartans hoped to shoot above .500 in conference play.

The SJSU defense provided the spark in the opening quarter with two three-and-out drives forced on the Air Force offense.

The Spartans’ first drive spanned nearly two minutes resulting in a Denis Lynch 31-yard field goal for the first score of the game. That was the only time the Spartans scored in the first half.

On State’s next drive, quarterback Walker Eget scrambled up field for 12 yards and a first down but took a hard hit on his way to the ground. Eget came out of the game for a few plays but luckily re-entered on the next drive. Eget threw two interceptions as part of the three SJSU turnovers which resulted in Air Force points.

The Falcons took a handle on the game in the second quarter outscoring the Spartans 16-0, including a safety on one of the wilder plays you’ll see, earning a commanding 16-3 lead going into halftime. Air Force totalled 94 offensive yards with only 11 passing yards as they ran the ball right through the SJSU defense on 24 total plays in the second quarter.

State answered back with another field goal in the third quarter before eventually scoring 10 in the fourth to make it somewhat close toward the end. Freshman, Steve Chavez-Soto rushed the only Spartan touchdown as part of his team-leading 49 rushing yards in the game.

Air Force matched the Spartans’ 10 point fourth quarter to come out on top with a 26-16 victory improving to 2-4 in the Mountain West Conference this year.

With no turnovers and a better run game, the Spartans most likely come out on top of this game. However, it’s onto the next for San Jose State as they head to Reno next week for a matchup against last place Nevada.
