San Francisco Giants game wrap: Giants still winless versus D-Backs, fall to 11 under .500; SF loses to Arizona 7-5

By Vince Cestone

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants just can’t solve the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2026, as Tyler Mahle and the Giants bullpen struggled again in a 7-5 loss to their National League West rival on Tuesday night.

The Giants are now 0-5 against Arizona in 2026 and have fallen to 11 games under .500. And they keep losing in seemingly the same way–poor pitching and an anemic offense when they need a big hit, while the D-Backs spray the ball all over the field and run circles around the Giants. The Giants lost despite hitting three home runs on Tuesday.

The Giants jumped out to an early lead on a Casey Schmitt first-inning home run. Schmitt now has 12 home runs on the year, matching his career high.

But as was the case on Monday afternoon, the D-Backs struck right back the following inning. After Mahle gave up a leadoff walk to Nolan Arenado, center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt hit a double that got stuck at the bottom of the right-center field wall. The D-Backs then played small ball to bring in the next two runs. Ildemaro Vargas had an RBI groundout to tie the game, and then Gabriel Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to give Arizona a 2-1. lead. Designated Hitter Adrian Del Castillo then hit a solo home run to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 advantage.

The Giants answered back when shortstop Willy Adames hit a leadoff triple just off the glove of a diving Tommy Troy in left-center field. Schmitt then promptly singled Adames in, making it 3-2 Arizona. The rally ended when third baseman Matt Chapman struck out and then Rafael Devers lined into a double play.

Mahle pitched better for the Giants on Tuesday but still took the loss. He went five innings, giving up three runs, while striking out three. His ERA is now 6.04 on the year, and he could be bounced from the rotation once Logan Webb returns from the injured list on Friday. The Giants bullpen couldn’t pick up Mahle, surrendering four runs in four innings. The pitching staff has been a nightmare for the Giants in 2026.

The Diamondbacks, as they did on Monday, added on. In the sixth inning against reliever Keaton Winn, the D-Backs scored after starting the inning with back-to-back singles from Geraldo Perdomo and Arenado. On the second single, Adames made a diving stop to prevent the ball from going into the outfield, but his low throw to first got by Devers, allowing Perdomo to get to third. After Waldschmidt struck out, Vargas hit a fielder’s choice to second base, bringing in Perdomo and giving the D-Backs a 4-2 lead.

Arizona tacked on two more home runs in the seventh inning on a long two-run home run by 2026 Giants killer Keitel Marte. The ball landed far up the right field bleachers in Andres Galarraga territory, given the D-Backs a 6-2 lead. That would be enough for Arizona to hold on to a 7-5 victory.

The Giants tried to chip away at the D-Backs lead, as catcher Eric Haase hit a solo home run in the seventh to pull San Francisco to within three. But Arizona, as they have done all series, answered back in the top of the 8th with an RBI-single by Moreno after a two-out double by Vargas, giving Arizona a 7-3 lead.

In the eighth, the Giants chipped away again on an RBI double by Rafael Devers following a Chapman walk, making it 7-4. With Devers on second and nobody out, the next three hitters were retired in order, stranding the runner at second base.

The Giants scored their fifth run on an Adames two out home run in the ninth inning. Schmitt then struck out to end the game, giving Arizona a 7-5 victory.

Diamondbacks starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, while shaky at times, pitched six strong innings, giving up six hits and just two runs. He struck out six and walked two.

Up next, the Giants will try to avoid getting swept by Arizona in a 12:45 p.m. game at Oracle Park. The Giants’ Trevor McDonald (2-1, 4.76 ERA) will oppose the D-Backs’ Michael Soroka (6-2, 3.27 ERA).

The Giants will need to bear down to avoid going 0-6 to the D-Backs in 2026.

#3 The Western Conference Title moves back to San Antonio who would have a chance to tie it up with a game six win on Thursday night. On the other hand the Thunder would have something to say about that. Your saying this one could go seven games.

Oakland Ballers Report: Follow the bouncing Ballers

Oakland, CA

By Lewis Rubman

OAKLAND–The first week of the 2026 Pioneer Baseball League was an inauspicious one for the defending champion Oakland Ballers, who managed nothing better than a 3-3 record, losing two out of three games against last year’s Mountain Division champs, the Missoula Paddle Heads and just squeaking by the Long Beach Coast, newcomers to the South Division and the league, also three games to two.

Both the league and the Ballers faced challenges before play began, but we’ll get to that after a brief review of the on-field action.

The Padddleheads demolished the B’s, 11-2 on opening night, Tuesday, the 19th, going ahead when Michael Koszewski blasted a one and two pitch over the left field wall to give the Montanans a lead they never would lose.

Jake Tirk was the only hometown hurler to blank the invaders, whoops: visitors, holding the seven batters he faced in the eighth and ninth frames to a couple of hits and a walk. Starting pitcher Gabe Tanner, who allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits and three free passes, took the loss.

Shortstop Tremayne Cobb and catcher Jarden’ Collura were the only Ballers with multiple hits, neither for extra bases. The defense committed three errors, to none for the Paddleheads, but only one of the Missoula tallies was earned.

The Ballers evened the series the next night with a convincing, but not overwhelming, victory, seesawing through four and a half innings before breaking three with a five run

bottom of the fifth and then scamper home with a 13-8 triumph. Cobb got three hits, all singles, as did centerfielder T.J. McKenzie, whose three for three night included a round tripper and half a dozen RBI. I’ll have more to say about manager Aaron Miles’ use of McKenzie when we get to the challenges and solutions section of this column.

Switch hitting Jake Allgeyer was the remaining B’s batter to log a mult-hit performance. First baseman Jeter Ybarra had a bad night, going 0-5 at the plate and committing the Ballers’ only error. Liam Rocha, who relieved Aidan Risse in the fourth and surrendered two runs, one of them earned, on two hits, while walking another pair of batters, in his three innings on the mound, got the win.

Missoula mauled their hosts in the series finale on Thursday, the 21st almost as badly as they had in the opener. The PaddleHeads crossed the plate twice in first and were ahead, 8-0, by the time the Oaklanders managed their first tally, a sole run, in the bottom of the seven. The final score was 12-4. The visitors score their dozen runs with a baker’s dozen of hits and made three errors. Oakland their quartet of tallies on an octet hits while committing a duet of errors. Esai Santos drove in half of Oakland’s runs with a two homer with Cobb on base in the bottom of the ninth. Nick Bautista, who lasted only 2-2/3 innings, took the loss.

The worm began to turn for the West Oakland Wonders when the Long Beach Coast,

AKA Regulators, sporting their teal jerseys and pinstriped black pants, came to town on Friday, the 22nd. It took an anxiety ridden three hours and thirty-two minutes before McKenzie’s sacrifice fly to center brough Jake Allgeyer home with the tie breaking winning run in the bottom of the ninth, giving us a line score that looked like this:

Long Beach Coast24040000111101

Santos, Ybarra, and left fielder Damian Stone went yard, and Jaden Sheppard, the DH, Stone, right fielder Noah ‘Blythe lifted the fans’ spirits with a run batted in apiece, Santos drove in threeand Ybarra five. Santos, Ybarra, and McKenzie were the only Ballers to get more than one hit, with two each; Sheppard, Stone, and Nick Poss, Friday night’s catcher, accounted for the remainder. Braydon Nelson was credited with the win, in spite of giving up a leadoff four bagger that put Long Beach ahead 11-8 in the top of the ninth.

A’s Succumb to Civale’s Rough Start, Lose 9-2 to Mariners

By Jeremiah Salmonson

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics returned home on Monday night for a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners. The A’s were fresh off a Los Angeles and San Diego trip where they went 4-3, as they won the Angels series and dropped the series to the Padres. Overall, it was a positive trip for the Athletics, who remained in first place in the AL West over the Seattle Mariners by one game in the standings coming into the game. While early, the series against the Mariners would be a good test for the A’s as they battle long term for the division title.

The Mariners defeated the A’s in front of 11,194 on a chilly night in commanding fashion, 9-2.

Aaron Civale, who has been the A’s best starter so far in the 2026 season, got the ball for the A’s to start the homestand at Sutter Health Park.

Civale cruised for the A’s in the first two innings of the game. He allowed two quick base hits with two outs in the first inning but got out of things unscathed, and had a one, two, three inning in the second inning. It was the third inning that did Civale in. After getting two outs in the inning, Civale gave up six runs on six hits as he completely melted down in what was an inexplicable inning. Civale managed to keep himself in the game to pitch the fourth inning, but he gave up a leadoff home run to start the fourth inning of action to continue his rough stretch. All in, Civale managed to go only four innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out two. Civale needed 73 pitches in his outing.

Mark Kotsay was forced to go to the A’s bullpen early in the fifth inning, and he elected for Jack Perkins first to relieve the starter, Aaron Civale. Perkins last pitched Friday night against the Angels when he pitched two and a third innings. Perkins was fantastic in the first four innings of his relief, allowing only one hit. However, Perkins found trouble in the ninth inning when he gave up a solo home run before being pulled with two outs in the ninth inning. Perkins tossed four and two-thirds innings in relief as the long man while giving up three hits and two runs in his outing that required 63 pitches.

The last man out of the pen for the A’s was Joel Kuhnel, who came in and got a strikeout for the final out of the top of the ninth inning.

On the offensive side of the ball, there was very slim output from the hitters. The A’s only managed seven hits and two runs in a game they would like to forget. The A’s hits came from Jeff McNeil, Zack Gelof, Henry Bolte, Shea Langeliers, Tyler Soderstrom and Darell Hernaiz, who had two hits. Langeliers was responsible for the A’s run in the eighth inning as he connected for a solo home run. Langeliers’s home run traveled 400 feet to right-center field and jumped off the bat at 104 mph.

The A’s only other run came in the ninth inning when McNeil grounded into a double play. It was the A’s second and last run as they fell to the Mariners 9-2.

The A’s and Mariners will play game two of the series on Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. PST. The A’s will send Luis Severino (2-5, 4.23 ERA) to the mound while the Mariners are scheduled to counter with Emerson Hancock (3-2, 3.07 ERA).

Giants can’t solve D-Backs, lose 6-2

Photo: Giants pitcher Landon Roupp takes the loss after allowing 7 hits and 4 runs over 5 innings, despite recording 7 strikeouts in a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park on Monday, May 25, 2026 (Jay Choi/SF Bay News Lab)

By Vince Cestone

SAN FRANCISCO — The Arizona Diamondbacks took advantage of sloppy defense from the San Francisco Giants, beating them 6-2 at Oracle Park on Monday afternoon.

After winning the series against the Chicago White Sox, the Giants came into Monday’s game with optimism. But a costly throwing error in the fifth inning by shortstop Willy Adames doomed San Francisco, as Arizona scored three times to take a two-run lead–a lead they would not give back.

The D-backs started the scoring in the third inning, when Gabriel Moreno hit a leadoff home run, his third of the year. With the Giants’ offense coming alive as of late, a one-run deficit did not seem insurmountable.

The Giants answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a leadoff walk by Adames, Luis Arraez doubled to right field on a ball that just ticked off the glove of Corbin Carroll, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. The next batter, Casey Schmitt, struck out on a nasty breaking ball away from D-backs pitcher Merrill Kelly. But Rafael Devers hit a long double to right-center field, bringing in both runs and giving the Giants a short-lived 2-1 lead.

These would be the only runs that Kelly would surrender, as he threw seven innings, giving up just 4 hits and two walks. He struck out four batters. Kelly came into the game with a 4-3 record and a 5.71 ERA.

In the fifth inning, the D-backs went to work with the help of the Giants’ defense. Ninth-place hitter Tommy Troy led off the inning with a routine ground ball to shortstop, but Adames airmailed the throw to first, putting Troy at second base with nobody out. Second baseman Ketel Marte then doubled to left on a blooper that Schmitt misplayed. The ball got past Schmitt, allowing Marte to get to second and scoring Troy to tie the game. After Carroll hit a sacrifice fly to move Marte to third, Geraldo Perdomo singled, giving the D-backs a 3-2 lead. Arizona tacked on another run on a base hit by designated hitter Adrian Del Castillo.

Giants starter Landon Roupp deserved a better fate but struggled once again on Monday. Roupp went five innings, giving up seven hits, four runs (two earned), one walk, while striking out seven. Even though his defense let him down, Roupp was giving up hard contact to the D-Backs, especially in the fifth inning. In his first two innings, Roupp retired all six batters he faced, striking out three.

The Diamondbacks would tack on two insurance runs in the sixth inning against Giants reliever Joel Peguero. A leadoff walk by Moreno led to two runs. Marte, who has torched the Giants this year, hit a two-RBI single that gave Arizona a 6-2 lead. The D-Backs bullpen took it from there, pitching two scoreless innings.

The Giants fall to 22-32, while the D-Backs improve to 29-24. Arizona was hovering around .500 until they played the Giants, which is the get-right team for most contending teams these days.

Up next, the Giants will try to get back on track against the Diamondbacks as they play Game 2 of the series. The Giants are still looking for their first win against Arizona in 2026, as they are now 0-4 against them. Arizona will send Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1, 2.24 ERA) to the mound against the Giants’ Tyler Mahle (1-6, 6.10 ERA). Game time is at 6:45 PM.

In order to get back into the playoff race, the Giants need to sweep some series, and they already missed a golden opportunity to do so at home. Their next chance will be against the Colorado Rockies this weekend, but given the way the Giants are playing, sloppy defense will not play well in Colorado.

Sacramento A’s podcast Barbara Mason: A’s worked hard to get win on Sunday to avoid a sweep

Sacramento A’s pitcher Aaron Civale will get the start against the Seattle Mariners at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento on Mon May 25, 2026 (photo by MLB file)

Sacramento A’s podcast Barbara Mason:

1.After losing the first two games of the series, the Sacramento Athletics were looking for a win in game three on Sunday to not only avoid the sweep but also remain in first place in the American League West.

2.There were some real offensive standouts in Sunday’s game starting with Carlos Cortez leadoff batter and it didn’t stop there, this roster had a great game from Nick Kurtz, Tyler Soderstrom and Jonah Heim.

3. The A’s not only got great offensive work from Tyler Soderstrom but he was outstanding defensively. Rookie Henry Bolte continues to deliver after being brought up along with Alika Wiliams who came onboard a little over a week ago from Pittsburgh.

4. The A’s opening pitching strategy worked great for the A’s. Luis Medina did open the game but came out early. He has recently come off Tommy John surgery and has been working stricktly out of the bullpen.

5. The A’s will now open a series with the Seattle Mariners with the first game Monday night. This will be a series between the top two teams in the American League West.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: A Statue for Vin Scully-Simply the Best-From my Notebook

Los Angeles Angels TV play by play announcer and author Amaury Pi Gonzalez (left) and Los Angeles Dodgers radio and TV play by play announcer Vin Scully (right) pose for a photo (photo from the author Amaury Pi Gonzalez)

By Amaury Pi Gonzalez

The Los Angeles Dodgers Approve $1.1 Million Project to Build Statue Honoring Vin Scully – The Greatest “Voice of the Soul” in American Baseball History After more than half a century as the “immortal voice” of American baseball, legend Vin Scully is finally set to have his own statue outside Dodger Stadium in a $1.1 million project approved by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The man who recounted some of MLB history’s greatest moments with a voice described as “the sound of an American summer” is now preparing to be immortalized in the very place where he spent 67 years creating the soul of the Dodgers, also called 28 World Series — a legacy many believe is even greater than baseball itself.

My good friend and ex-Dodgers Spanish broadcaster Jaime Jarrin first introduced me to Vin Scully in 1988 when I was broadcasting for the Oakland A’s, who were facing the Dodgers in that year’s World Series. Since then, I have seen Vin Scully many times, and he has always been a gentleman and a great inspiration not only for me but for numerous broadcasters for many decades.

The last time legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully visited Angel Stadium in 2016 to call the Freeway Series during the regular season, I was the Spanish play-by-play announcer for the LA Angels on FSN (Fox Sports Net) in Los Angeles.

His broadcast booth (visiting TV) was separated from my broadcast partner José Mota’s and mine by a glass partition. When I was doing the Spanish for the SF Giants, my wife would come with me to the games on Sundays. She has her “Broadcaster’s Baseball,” which she brings to the Sunday games, and she collects autographs from the visiting teams’ broadcasters. That included a signature from Mr. Scully.

Vin gave Gail permission to call him “Vin”. One of the best “gifts” Gail has ever received. She was born in SoCal and has been a lifelong Dodger fan, with fond memories of attending a game when Don Drysdale was pitching his no-hitter. Fast-forward to recent memories: Mr. Scully told me after a game, “Don’t forget to say hi to Gail.”

A true gentleman. Vin Scully Statue at Dodger Stadium will be great for baseball fans and for a great man and broadcaster, and I applaud the LA Dodgers for the initiative, because Vin Scully was the best baseball play-by-play announcer who ever lived, from Brooklyn to Los Angeles and is well known and recognized all over the world. He broadcast the Dodgers games on the radio and later on television for 67 years; he was simply the best.

Quote: “May God give you for every storm, a rainbow, for every tear, a smile, for every care, a promise, and a blessing in each trial.”-Vin Scully.
