Warriors Come Alive In Fourth Quarter Advance To Conference Finals 110-96

Warriors Come Alive In Fourth Quarter Advance To Conference Finals 110-96

By Barbara Mason

Friday night the Golden State Warriors took on the Memphis Grizzlies looking to finish off this semifinal series against Memphis. The Warriors in game 6 did just that and pulled it off with a 110-96 win in a 4-2 series win.

The good news for the Warriors is that they played Game six at Chase Center. There was a lot of good news for the Grizzlies as well. They were playing at an incredible level in game 5 on Wednesday and their confident level was off the charts.

The Warriors on the other hand were playing very poorly before Friday night’s game after getting stomped on in Memphis in game 5. They played at an all-time low on Wednesday trailing at one point in the game by 55 points.

The final was 134-95 in favor of Memphis. There was no energy, no focus, no discipline and horrible ball protection by the Warriors in that game and that was cleaned up on Friday night advancing to the next round of the playoffs. Golden State did not want to take this series back to Memphis.

Game 6 recap: Golden State came out with better focus and energy to start the game. They led after the first quarter 30-26 in a highly competitive game. At the half the Warriors led 53-51 in a real dog fight. Protecting the ball continued to be a problem for the Warriors with 12 turnovers in the first half.

Steven Adams left the game late in the second quarter with a possible right leg issue but was able to play the second half which was great news for the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies outscored the Warriors in the third quarter by a single point but the Warriors clung onto a 78-77 lead heading into the fourth quarter

What the Warriors have waited to see for a few games now was unleashed in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. A furious rally from Golden State finished off the Grizzlies. Golden State is headed to the third round of the Western Conference Finals.

The slow start in this game finished in a blaze of glory. The defense was amazing with Kevon Looney finishing with what has to be his all time high 22 rebounds. Draymond Green had 15 rebounds and 14 points.

Andrew Wiggins had 11 rebounds and 18 points. It was a brilliant defensive effort in the fourth quarter. The Splash Brothers came to play although it was Stephen Curry who really came to life to close out this game. Klay Thompson finished with 30 points and Curry with 29.

After all that he has been through the past two plus years it was a very happy Thompson after the game. “I tried to focus on the present . Another closeout game at Chase gave me butterflies,” he said. “I’m gonna kick my feet up and watch the Suns,” Thompson said.

They will now await the results of the Suns vs Mavericks in a game seven semifinal. ‘I am going in hungry when that time comes. You can’t take anything for granted,” said Thompson as they look ahead to the Western Conference finals. He had nothing but great things to say about the amazing game from Looney. “Kevon was big time. He is great at the rim, he is a Warrior for life.”

The team will now await their opponent in the Western Conference Finals having a few days to rest and digest this amazing win.

Evan Longoria’s bat came alive during a five-run rally, San Francisco pitching turned in another solid performance, and the Giants extended their winning streak to six with an 8-2 verdict over the St. Louis Cardinals Friday at Busch Stadium.

After going 0-for-5 in his first game back off the injured list, Longoria hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning, helping to put the game out of reach. Thairo Estrada and Brandon Crawford scored on the play, extending San Francisco’s lead to 6-1.

Curt Casali capped the five-run eighth when he followed with a two-run home run to left-center – his first of the season – driving in Longoria. Earlier in the inning, Crawford had reached on a base hit that drove in Mike Yastrzemski.

Paul Goldschmidt drove in both Cardinal runs with a first-inning groundout and his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. The Giants went ahead to stay on Yastrzemski’s tie-breaking two-run double in the top of the third, driving in LaMonte Wade Jr. and Brandon Belt.

Luis Gonzalez’ RBI single to left tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Logan Webb (5-1) surrendered one earned run on three hits and three walks with one strikeout. Dominic Leone earned his third hold, while Zack Littell and Jarlin Garcia finished up.

Jordan Hicks (1-3) struck out three and walked two, but also gave up three earned runs on three hits. Relievers Nick Wittgren and T.J. McFarland gave up the five San Francisco runs in the eighth.

The second game of the weekend series starts at 11:15 a.m. PDT Saturday. Jakob Junis (1-0, 1.20) starts for San Francisco, and the Cardinals will go with Dakota Hudson (2-2, 3.56).

OAKLAND–My childhood friend the late Joseph Nigota used to live across the street from Madison Square Garden. Each year he eagerly awaited the day when the circus train would arrive in the Hudson Yards and make the circus parade past his home while he watched it through the apartment windows.

Today the circus came to Oakland, featuring Shoehei Ohtani and his accompanying trapeze artists, the High Flying Los Angeles Angels, at game time record well above .500 at 21-12, just a half a game behind the Yankees for first place in the AL West.

The boys and girls of the press peered through the windows of their apartment while a scattering of paying customers, announced as numbering 13,992, which qualifies as a crowd these days at the Coliseum watched from the stands as the A’s fell to the Angels 2-0.

Shohei Ohtani did not pitch for the visitors this evening, instead batting third as the designated hitter. He went 0-4 with a strikeout. Pitching duties for the Halos fell to Chase Silseth, making his major league debut. Indeed, last year’s 11th round draft pick hadn’t even thrown a ball at the AAA level.

He made three appearances for the Rocket City Pandas in ’21 and had gone 2-0 ERA 1.69 for the same team in the AA Southern League this year when he was called to the show this morning. He would get the win after an outstanding six innings of masterful hurling.

Oakland’s starter was a more known quality and quantity. Although he, too, technically is a rookie, Daulton Jefferies went 1-0 ERA 3.60 in five appearances for the green and gold in 2021 and 1-5 ERA 5.22 for them last season.

He held Philadelphia scoreless on two hits and two walks in his five inning stint against the Phillies back on April 10 but between then and his first pitch of Friday evening he had 0-5 record in the bigs. He took the loss. For this year Jefferies drops his record to 1-6 ERA 4.84.

The recently reinstated Ramón Laurano saved Jefferies’ bacon twice in the top of the third. Playing in right field, he made an exciting diving catch of Chad Wallach’s sinking liner to right center that opened the inning. Next, his rifle-armed throw to second on Tyler Wade’s hard single to right held the Angels’ second sacker to a single.

Jefferies struck out Andrew Velásquez on an 87.9 mph change up and then yielded an infield single to Taylor Ward but wiggled out of the threat by getting the dangerous Mike Trout to ground out to Elvis Andrus at short.

Andrus giveth and Andrus taketh away. His lead off single to center in the third was Oakland´s first hit. He reached second on Pache sacrifice to third and then made the mistake of trying to advance on Lowrie’s fly to left.

Brandon Marsh’s accurate throw cut him down easily to end the inning. Sheldon Neuse, the only Athletic with a respectable batting average (unless you count Pinder’s .253) was on deck.

The Angels didn’t give away their chance to score in the top of the fourth. Anthony Rendón smacked a one out double to left that left his bat at 107 mph. An out later, he scampered home Marsh´s single up the middle to center.

The team from SoCal doubled its lead in their half of the fifth. Number nine hitter Andrew Velásquez hit his first roundtripper of the season, a 372 foot blast to right that earned him his fifth RBI and made the score 2-0 in favor of the Angels. Mike Trout made the third out of the frame, striking out swinging. One never knows, do one?

Kirby Snead relieved Jefferies after six innings of play, in which the A’s starter allowed two runs, both earned, five hits, one of them a four bagger, and no walks while striking out four. He threw 88 pitches, 55 for strikes. A credible performance and an encouraging one.

Silseth also was removed after six innings of work. The 19 year old’s line was exceptional. He shut the Athletics out on just one hit and two walks. He K’d five A’s and threw 81 pitches, 52 of them considered strikes.

Aaron Loup replaced him on the mound, throwing a perfect seventh, followed by Ryan Teper for Oakland’s penultimate turn at bat. He allowed the A’s second hit, a single by Andrus, who was the only Athletic to hit safely all night.

Snead retired the Angels in order in his assigned frame, yielding to Lou Trivino in the eighth, who looked sharp as he set the Halos down 1-2-3 in his inning of work. Sam Moll took over for him. in the top of the final frame and allowed nothing more harmful than a single to Rendón.

Raisel Iglesias came in in the ninth to get the save, his eighth in eight opportunities. He did, putting Oakland down in order.

The teams will play a day-night doubleheader for Saturday. Games scheduled to start at 1:07 and 6:40. We can expect to see the Angels Jhonathan Díaz (1-0 ERA 0.00) against the A’s Paul Blackburn (4-0 ERA1.74) in the front game and in the night cap the Angels will start Patrick Sandoval (1-1 ERA 2.03) going against the A’s Frankie Montás (2-3 ERA 3.77).

Giants’ group mentality winning games again in 2022, despite individual losses and additions

By Morris Phillips

SAN FRANCISCO–Buster Posey retired, Kevin Gausman left town in search of big bucks, and yes, the Dodgers did everything but disappear. And somehow the Giants persevered, and in many ways got better.

Better than 107 regular season wins? We’ll see.

The common wisdom has been that the Giants don’t have to break a franchise-record for regular season wins for a second, straight season to be better. Trying to do so in competition with the Dodgers, and within the new reality of expanded playoffs would be unnecessary. But within an organization built on incremental improvement and fine tuning, the Giants–through 31 games–have shown signs of ascendancy.

The 2022 Giants don’t hit home runs like they did in 2021, but they’re positively stingy in giving them up. The pitching staff has allowed just 17 round trippers in 31 games, and they’ve issued just 84 walks. The theme: nothing easy for opposing hitters, and as the team’s offense kicks in, these pitching numbers grow in significance.

Evan Longoria, LaMonte Wade Jr., Steven Duggar, Brandon Belt and Tommy LaStella (who has yet to debut in 2022) have missed sizeable pieces of the schedule, reducing the potency of the offense. In their place Luis Gonzales, Thairo Estrada, Joc Pederson and Wilmer Flores have picked up their games, and kept the basepaths moving. Compensating for the relative lack of homers (32 hit in 31 games), the Giants led MLB in sacrifice flies (17) and 20 stolen bases put the team in the top five across baseball. Can’t hammer ’em? Finesse ’em, be resourceful. The Giants have clearly gotten the message.

The team’s bullpen has been fantastic so far, easily the best unit of the ballclub to date. No fewer than seven, heavy usage relievers sport ERAs of less than 3.38. Jake McGee, last season’s closer is the one outlier and he’s landed on the injured list partly in hopes he can recapture his effectiveness.

The Giants’ schedule–as we can envision it now–is challenging throughout. That’s the case succinctly in the coming weeks with the Cardinals, Mets, Padres and the Phillies before they host the Dodgers for the first time on June 10.

On Friday, Logan Webb goes for a MLB-leading fifth win on Friday night in St. Louis. The Cardinals have Jordan Hicks has their expected starter.

A’s Take four of five from Tigers In a 5-3 Win

A’s Take four of five from Tigers In a 5-3 Win

By Barbara Mason

Thursday afternoon the Oakland A’s (14-19) took on the Detroit Tigers (9-23) in the fifth and final game of their series. Oakland took their hot bats into this game winning their third game in a row and took four out of five at Comerica Park with a 5-3 win.

Lately the A’s have been scoring in the early innings and this game was no exception. In the first inning a single by Jed Lowrie drove in Tony Kemp for an early 1-0 lead. Christian Bethany who is on a hot streak had a single and drove in Jed Lowrie and Sheldon Neuse now leading 3-0.

It was a quiet second, third and fourth inning for both teams. In the fifth inning the Tigers scored a couple of runs trailing Oakland 3-2. Tucker Barnhart doubled and Willi Castro would score followed by Robbie Grossman who grounded out to first and Torkelson would score.

In the sixth inning the Tigers would tie up the game 3-3. Miguel Cabrera doubled and Candeloria scored .

After a quiet seventh inning the A’s broke this game open. Seth Brown came through for Oakland hitting a tie breaking home run in the eighth inning giving them a 5-3 lead which would be the final score.

Oakland will now head back to the Bay Area where they will meet the red hot second place Los Angeles Angels Friday night. This wil be a huge challenge for the A’s but the good news for Oakland is that they are hitting again and scoring in the early innings.

Dalton Jeffries will take the mound for the A’s and the Angels will send Chase Silseth to start the game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM.

San Francisco Giants podcast with Michael Duca: Giants Cobb holds Rockies to one run; SF opens 3 game series in St Louis Friday

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb throws to the Colorado Rockies line up in the first inning at Oracle Park in San Francisco in the third and last game of the series on Wed May 11, 2022 (AP News photo)

On the Giants podcast with Michael:

#1 San Francisco Giants (19-12) starter Alex Cobb didn’t look like he was running out of gas at all as he went 5.1 innings, surrendering just three hits and a run to the Colorado Rockies (16-15) in a landslide 7-1 win at Oracle Park in a Wednesday matinee.

#2 Cobb walked only two batters and was effective with a mix of pitches and keeping the hitters off balance striking out six hitters. It was the first time that Cobb has got in the win column since April 12th improving his record to 2-1.

#3 The Giants who swept the Rockies in the series and dominated them in pitching, hitting and runs scored. As this third game was no different from the first two games touching up Rockies pitching. Rockies pitcher Chad Kuhl suffered his first loss of the season now 3-1. The Giants shelled Kuhl for five runs in 4 2/3 innings.

#4 The Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford was seeing the ball just fine with three RBIs and scoring two runs in his own right as well. Joey Bart, Brandon Belt, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Joc Pederson all got RBIs for the Giants and handing the Rockies their fourth consecutive loss.

#5 The Giants for their next encore will open a three game series in St Louis against the Cardinals (16-13) on Fri May 13 at Busch Stadium in St Louis. Starting pitcher for the Giants in Kapler fashion has not been announced the Cards will start Steven Matz (3-2 ERA 7.01) a 5:15 pm PDT first pitch.
