SAN FRANCISCO – Another Oracle Park sellout crowd watched the Giants take down the Rockies 6-3 behind the big swings of Willy Adames and Heliot Ramos. Trevor McDonald recorded the first ten strike out game of his career in his 7.0 inning performance, earning him his first big league win.

The Giants opened up their final series of 2025 on the last Orange Friday of the year against the Colorado Rockies Friday night. It was Willie Mac Award night at the ballpark where the 45th anniversary of the award was celebrated by recognizing Giants shortstop, Willy Adames.

Adames was voted the most inspirational player on the Giants by his teammates, coaches, and fans. He earned the award in his first season as a Giant while batting .225 with 28 home runs and 84 RBIs and playing an integral role in the Junior Giants program for young boys and girls.

Right hander Trevor McDonald was set to make his second big-league start after allowing just one run through six great innings of work on September 21 against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

McDonald settled in, shutting the Rockies out through the first four while striking out seven in the process.

On the offensive side, the Giants got to work early on Rockies starter, German Marquez. Less than an hour after winning that award, Willy Adames sent a deep fly ball to left field that wrapped around the foul pole for a two-run homer. The Giants led 2-0 after the first.

In the second, the offense rallied for three more runs. Jung Hoo Lee tripled with one out and Grant McCray walked with two down. With two men on and two out, Heliot Ramos launched his 21st home run of the season into the left field bleachers. Ramos took a hanging slider 439 feet, 110mph off the bat for a 5-0 Giants lead.

Trevor McDonald didn’t get into trouble until the fifth inning when he allowed three runs, cutting the lead down to two. Brenton Doyle and Braxton Fulford both singled, setting up two on and two out for Ezequiel Tovar. Tovar smashed a first pitch curveball over the center field wall to put the Rockies on the board. His 9th homer of the season made it a two run game and ended up being Trevor McDonald’s only bad pitch of the night.

McDonald finished Friday night with 7.0IP, 5H, 3ER, 0BB, and 10K. An absolutely stellar performance set the Giants up to take game one of the series and earn McDonald his first career win.

The Giants added an insurance run in the home fifth but they wouldn’t end up needing it. Ryan Walker, who has struggled lately took the mound in the ninth with a 6-3 lead and a chance for the save. He struck out the first two batters he faced and got Brenton Doyle to ground out to the man of the night, Willy Adames to end the ballgame.

An exciting start to the weekend ended with Tony Bennett spreading the love through the yard as the Giants took game one of the series 6-3.

Game two will take place Saturday afternoon with the Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland (5-16, 5.00) vs. the Giants RHP Justin Verlander (3-11, 3.88).

First pitch at Oracle Park, 1:05pm.

A’s Fall Short of Sweep in 11-5 Loss to Astros

By Jeremiah Salmonson

WEST SACRAMENTO — After winning the first two games of their series against the Astros, the A’s struggled on Thursday afternoon and failed to sweep, losing 11-5.

J.T. Ginn, who has had mixed results this season for the A’s, wasn’t sharp again. Ginn only managed to complete three and two-thirds innings as the Astros shelled him for seven runs on six hits. Making his final start of the year, Ginn also surrendered three walks while striking out four.

Mark Kotsay spoke after the game about where he felt Ginn’s issues stemmed from.

“We talk a lot about free bases really hurting us and setting the tone. And I think for J.T., that first inning he really fished his way into some trouble. And when you do that against a good team, it’s tough to maneuver and to get out of those types of jams. I think the command wasn’t there today. The pitches were up in the zone.”

The bullpen

The A’s bullpen also struggled after tossing great innings in the first two games of the series.

Brady Basso was first out of the pen to relieve Ginn in the fourth inning. Basso recorded the final out of the fourth and got two outs in the fifth before being lifted after giving up two runs on three hits while walking three.

Osvaldo Bido came in for Basso and tossed two and a third innings of solid work. Bido gave up one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one.

Scott McGough was the final arm out of the bullpen for Kotsay, pitching the eighth and ninth. McGough gave up one run on one hit while striking out two.

The bats

The A’s bats struggled against Astros starter Framber Valdez, whose only blemish was a Nick Kurtz solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to get the A’s on the board. It was the 34th home run of the season for Kurtz and a foreshadowing of things to come later in the game.

Kurtz did his best to pull the A’s closer in the eighth inning with another home run which was his 35th of the season. The second blast, a 389-foot shot to left-center field that left the bat at 105 mph, was the A’s second and third runs of the game.

After the game, Kotsay spoke to the approach from Kurtz that has allowed him to succeed against both righties and lefties this season.

“He hadn’t seen a ton of Framber and for the approach to be what it was to have success, he needed to hit the ball left-center and the results would come. And I think you saw that he stuck with the approach and did a really nice job of getting the ball elevated, which was tough to do off Framber and getting a couple balls that he could handle and drive the other way.”

Whenever Kurtz gets the ball in the air the opposite way, it almost always seems to have a chance to be a home run. That was an opinion Kotsay agreed with after the game.

“When Nick touches the baseball, especially in the air opposite field, good things happen and we saw it today.”

Kurtz, who always has the same demeanor postgame, was calm and determined in his comments as if this is a normal result he expects every game.

“My power is going to the backside of the field,” Kurtz said. “I had to realize that I could still do that on inside pitches. I don’t need to try to pull.”

Kurtz went on to describe his relationship with A’s hitting coach Darren Bush, who is highly regarded among the players and in the organization.

“Oh, he’s awesome. I’m able to go to him whenever something feels a little off, whether it’s a simple mental adjustment, whether it’s a swing adjustment. We’re talking on a day-to-day basis on what I feel and what he sees, so it’s been really great to have him here throughout the whole way, especially with a bunch of young guys…”

The A’s added two more runs in the ninth thanks to a JJ Bleday RBI double and a Max Schuemann RBI groundout. They finished with five runs on 12 hits and three walks.

Up next

The A’s will begin their final series of the year on Friday at 7:05 p.m. PST at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. They have yet to announce starters for the series against the Kansas City Royals. The Royals will send Noah Cameron (9-7, 2.90) to the hill.

Cal Bears podcast Morris Phillips: Cal heads to Boston College for week 5 next Saturday

Cal Bears podcast Morris Phillips:

#1 After winning their first three games the Cal Bears were shutout 34-0 last Saturday by the San Diego State Aztecs. What would you say were the differences between the first three wins and last week’s absolutely crushing loss?

#2 The Aztecs Chris Johnson did some damage to Cal when he scored a 97 yard touchdown and Dwayne McDougle scored on a 35 yard fumble return. Were these scores just a matter of the Aztecs executing or were they mistakes by the Golden Bears.

#3 Cal missed having a 4-0 start for the first time since 2019. Cal in each of those three wins had won those games by double digits.

#4 Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele at quarterback for Cal couldn’t get the Golden Bears in the end zone. Tough line 17-38, 208 yards, no scoring, two interceptions.

#5 It’s off to Boston College next Sat Sep 27th. BC lost in their last game to Stanford on 30-20 at Stanford Stadium. It was the Eagles second loss of the season dropping their record to 1-2. Cal will be on their second straight week of playing on the road. After getting shutout last Saturday can Cal come back with an improved offensive game plan going into Boston this weekend?

Severino Delivers Statement Start as A’s Shut Out Astros

Luis Severino #40 of the Athletics pitches against the Houston Astros in the top of the first inning at Sutter Health Park on September 24, 2025 in Sacramento, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)

By Jeremiah Salmonson

WEST SACRAMENTO — During the 2025 season, Luis Severino has been mired in controversy surrounding the A’s and their temporary home at Sutter Health Park. Severino made a name for himself early in Sacramento by complaining about the ballpark’s mound, feel, and proximity to the clubhouse amenities he is accustomed to in MLB parks.

Through it all, I think Severino was largely misunderstood, but it didn’t help his image of complaining after rough starts at Sutter Health Park. Early in the season, Severino had some of the worst road/home splits in all of baseball for a starting pitcher.

So, when Severino took the mound on Wednesday night at Sutter Health Park, it felt as if he had something to prove to end the season. Severino fired six and a third innings of shutout baseball as the A’s defeated the Astros 6-0.

Severino’s final line was six and a third innings, giving up no runs on just three hits while walking only one batter and striking out five hitters.

After the game, Severino reflected on his start and the victory.

“I’m going to go to sleep really happy tonight. It feels good. I think I’m finally figuring it out… But yeah, really happy. I feel like I was in control the whole game. Shea was hitting all the good buttons and we were throwing a lot of strikes.”

Mark Kotsay was also pleased with the way Severino ended his 2025 season.

“I love the way it [the season] finished for Sevy. A tough stretch through May. We all went through it together. Obviously it impacted our season, but to turn the page, move forward and finish off the year the way he did tonight I’m really impressed and he showed that he’s a true pro coming off the injury to make a few more starts to finish off this season the way he did. It says a lot about him and the competitor he is, I know tonight meant a lot.”

Speaking on the turnaround recently for Severino, Kotsay credited his approach for the success.

“I think he’s just more aggressive. I think the confidence is there and he’s making pitches when he needs to make pitches, he’s attacking hitters and he’s on the aggressive.”

The bullpen

Hogan Harris came on to relieve Luis Severino and retired the last two batters of the seventh inning before pitching a scoreless eighth. Harris was perfect in his one and two thirds innings of work as he struck out two Houston hitters.

In the ninth, with the A’s up 6-0, Mark Kotsay elected with the sometimes unreliable ninth inning man Elvis Alvarado. Elvis, who has been solid for the A’s in his rookie season, got into a bit of trouble in the ninth inning. However, Elvis managed to escape the ninth giving up no runs after allowing two hits in the inning. A visibly excited Alvarado pumped his fist in a show of emotion after recording the final out of the game via a strikeout.

The bats

The A’s bats took advantage of everything they got going on Wednesday as they scored six runs on eight hits in the game. The A’s also drew three walks.

The A’s got on the board in the third inning when Tyler Soderstrom doubled home Nick Kurtz to open the scoring.

Shea Langeliers, who all in all went 4-4 in the game, added on for the A’s in the fifth inning with an RBI double that scored Brett Harris.

Brent Rooker came up later in the fifth inning and knocked home two runs on an RBI single to give the A’s the fifth inning 4-0 lead over the Astros.

The A’s final two runs both came courtesy of the long ball. In the seventh inning, Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom both hit solo home runs to give the A’s the 6-0 lead and seal the deal on the series win against the Astros.

Up next

The A’s and Astros will play the final game of a three game series on Thursday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. PST. J.T. Ginn (4-6, 4.57 ERA) is scheduled to take the ball for the A’s as the Astros have yet to announce the starter.

Giants avoid the sweep against St. Louis 4-3 behind game winning hit by Andrew Knizner in the eighth

San Francisco Giants Casey Schmitt dives into second base with a double as St Louis Cardinals second baseman Brandon Donavon puts on the tag too late at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Wed Sep 24. 2025 (AP News photo)

By Lincoln Juarez

SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants took the final game of three against the Cardinals to avoid being swept. Andrew Knizner came up with two clutch RBIs and the game-winning hit in the eighth inning. Rafael Devers launched his 34th home run of the season into McCovey Cove for the 108th Splash Hit by a Giant in Oracle Park’s history.

In the first of four meaningless games at Oracle Park to end the season, the Giants hosted the Cardinals in the final game of their three game series. The orange and black suffered two devastating losses to begin the week officially eliminating them from playoff contention. The Giants were searching for any way to give the Oracle Park crowd something positive to cheer about.

SF’s JT Brubaker made his first start as a Giant in his fifth appearance with the team. In nine career games against St. Louis, prior to Wednesday night, he was 0-6 with a 6.20 ERA.

The only trouble he faced from the Cardinal lineup came in the third inning where two runs came across on three hits against the right hander. After tying an MLB record with four doubles in a game Tuesday night, Brendan Donovan doubled again, this time driving in Victor Scott II. He then came around to score on an Ivan Herrera single which ended up being the last time a Cardinal flew across the plate.

The Giants got to Cardinals’ starter Sonny Gray for a run in the second, third, and fourth innings building up a 3-2 lead.

Casey Schmitt doubled in the home second for his first of three hits on the night. Jung Hoo Lee followed and traded places with Schmitt to give the Giants a 1-0 at the time.

After giving up the lead in the top half of the inning and trailing 2-1, Rafael Devers led off the home third with his first career Splash Hit and 34th home run of the year to tie the game.

In the bottom of the fourth Christian Koss led off with a deep fly ball to right that was dropped by right fielder Jordan Walker, allowing Koss to reach second base on the error. A productive groundout by Drew Gilbert moved Koss over to third and he eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Knizner.

The Giants took that 3-2 lead all the way to the eighth behind three strong shutout innings by Carson Seymour, when the Cardinals finally broke through to tie the game. Nolan Arenado scored Ivan Herrera on a sac fly that received a large, collective groan from the fans packed inside Oracle Park.

Jose Butto replaced Matt Gage and got the Giants out of the inning in a 3-3 tie.

Seven, eight, and nine were due up in the home eighth looking for some magic. Christian Koss led off with a single and moved over to second on a ground ball by Drew Gilbert forcing the only play to be at first base. Andrew Knizner, who got the start with a .219 batting average so far this season, stepped up with the go-ahead run in scoring position.

He drove a screaming line drive 108mph off the bat to center field past a diving Victor Scott II and all the way to the center field wall. Pumping his fists as he powered into third base, Knizner had given the Giants an eighth inning lead on an RBI-triple.

Nothing more came in the eighth, but the excitement continued in the top of the ninth with second baseman Christian Koss rolling a do-it-yourself double play, dancing across the second base bag as he slung a throw to Bryce Eldridge at first to complete the play.

St. Louis sent pinch hitter Jose Fermin to the plate as their final hope. On the first pitch he bunted a ball down the third base line where Casey Schmitt gloved it and threw to first on the run for the final out.

The Giants avoided being swept by the Cardinals for the first time since June 20-23, 2024 and for the first time in San Francisco since June 17-19, 1991 at Candlestick Park.

San Francisco will try to bring the momentum from Wednesday night into the final weekend of the season, following an off day Thursday. Game 160 will take place Friday evening at Oracle Park with the Colorado Rockies who have not announced a starter and for the Giants RHP Trevor McDonald (0-0 ERA 3.38)

First pitch 7:15pm.
