Joshua Karty kicked a 31-yard field goal with 5:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, providing Stanford with a 10-7 Pac-12 football victory Saturday at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash,

The Cardinal (3-6 overall, 2-5 Pac 12) have a 41-31-1 edge in the series, which may or may not continue after this season due to the dissolution of the Pac-12 Conference. One year ago, the Cougars (4-5 overall, 1-5 Pac-12) defeated Stanford 52-14

Washington State opened the scoring with 6:18 left in the second quarter with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Ward to Josh Kelly.

Stanford tied the game at 7-7 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Justin Lamson with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter. Lamson led Cardinal ballcarriers with 54 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Ashton Daniels completed 15 of 31 passes for 115 yards, no touchdowns and one interceptions. He also carried nine times for 18 yards and was sacked once.

Sam Roush caught seven passes for 61 yards to lead the Cardinal, followed by Elic Ayomanor with four catches for 53 yards.

Tristan Sinclair paced the Cardinal defense with nine total tackles, four solo. Scotty Edwards added an interception and the defense also had three sacks.

Ward completed 24 of 40 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. Djouvensky Schlenbaker was the top Cougars rusher with 34 yards on 13 attempts.

Lincoln Victor caught a game-high 12 passes for Washington State, gaining 66 yards. Kelly finished with four receptions for 82 yards.

Washington State outgained the Cardinal in total offense 245 yards to 217. Stanford had a slight edge in first downs 18-16.

Next week, the Cardinal travel to Corvallis, Ore., to face No. 16 Oregon State. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.

Sharks lose back-to-back games by double digits this time against Pittsburgh 10-2

Still searching for their first win the Sharks took on the Penguins at home with Erik Karlsson making his return to San Jose.

Getting the start for San Jose was Mackenzie Blackwood while the Penguins had Tristan Jarry in goal.

The first period saw Reilly Smith get two goals for the Penguins with one coming on the power play.

Then in the second period the wheels really fell off the bus. Goals by Jake Guentzel and Vinnie Hinostroza blew it open to 4-0.

A goal from Anthony Duclair on the power play cut the Penguins lead to three.

To close out the second period the Penguins scored three straight as Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and former Shark Matt Nieto lit the lamp making it 7-1.

After the goal from Letang Blackwood’s night would end as Magnus Chrona stepped in to take his place. Chrona actually made his NHL debut when he stepped in goal.

The third period saw the score get run up to double digits once again as the Sharks became the first team in 58 years to give up ten goals in back-to-back games.

The culprits for the Penguins would be Bryan Rust, Malkin, and Jake Guentzel with one goal coming from the Sharks as Jacob MacDonald scored on the power play.

The score ended at 10-2 with the shots favoring the Penguins at 35-26.

If there was any bright spot for the Sharks they did go 2/6 on the power play while Pittsburgh went 2/4.

The Sharks will look to get their first win on Tuesday against the Flyers at home at 7:30 p.m.

#1 How tough is it that the Stanford Cardinal (2-6) have their last two road games against the Washington State Cougars (4-4) tonight and Oregon State next week both on the road.

#2 These will be the last two Pac 12 road games that Stanford will have as the break of up of the Pac 12 starts next season. Stanford head coach Troy Taylor said it’s painful and disappointing that it’s ending this way.

#3 The Cougars were 4-0 in September but have cooled off immensely having lost four straight games all in the month of October.

#4 The Cougars have won the last six games against the Stanford. Last season the Cougars clobbered the Cardinal 52-14 at Stanford Stadium. The weather forecast for tonight in Pullman calls for rain.

#5 Michael, with the field being wet and the ball being wet as well how do you see the Cardinal quarterback Anthony Daniels getting a good grip on the ball for quick passes.

Oregon Ducks Sting Cal Bears 63-19; Nix, Oregon score an avalanche of touchdowns in Cal loss

It was a tough afternoon for the California Bears up in Oregon as they got trounced by the Ducks to the tune of 63-19 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. They hung in the game for the opening quarter but going into the second quarter the Ducks turned it on and never looked back.

Saturday afternoon the California Bears (3-5) traveled up north to take on the Oregon Ducks (7-1). The two teams took the field amid threat of precipitation as the Bears faced not only inclement weather but dealing with an offensive giant in the Ducks.

The Ducks got a quick start in the opening quarter scoring two touchdowns taking a 14-0 lead. Oregon’s first strike was a 48 yard pass from quarterback Bo Nix to Tez Johnson. Minutes later the Ducks struck again when Nix took the ball into the end zone for one yard and the second score of the day for Oregon.

The Bears answered with a field goal with 1:39 left in the first quarter. Mateen Bhaghani sent a 48 yard kick through the uprights. On the very next Oregon possession the Ducks fumbled and the ball was recovered by Cal’s Nohl Williams for a sixteen yard romp into the end zone for six. Cal had made a nice comeback trailing by the score of 14-10 and were within striking distance.

Cal would draw even closer when they kicked a second field goal in the early minutes of the second quarter. Bhaghani kicked a 27 yard field goal and California trailed by a single point 14-13. The rest of the second quarter was all Oregon.

The sleeping giant woke up with a vengeance scoring three touchdowns in the quarter. Bo Nix rushed for his second touchdown of the game at 5:21. Nix went on to hit Tez Johnson for his second touchdown of the game, this one for 14 yards at 1:39 left before the half.

With six seconds left in the quarter Nix went to work again thanks to a Bears fumble hitting Troy Franklin for 7 yards extending their lead to 35-13 at halftime.

Cal made up some ground to start the third quarter scoring a 20 yard Jayden Ott rushing touchdown. The Bears went for the two point conversion which failed and California trialed 35-19. The Ducks would add to their lead mid-way through the quarter. Bucky Irving rushed for 6 yards extending the Oregon lead to 42-19.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Ducks as they continued to pile on the points scoring three touchdowns in the quarter. Bo Nix threw his fourth touchdown pass in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, a four yard strike to Terrance Ferguson.

Jordan James would rush for 16 yards and another Oregon touchdown. With the score 56-19 Oregon quarterback Bo Nix was finished for the day. He threw for 386 yards and was 29 of 38 passes with four touchdowns.

Ty Thompson took over under center and finished off the game with yet another Oregon touchdown, a six yard pass to Traeshon Holden for the final score of 63-19.

California quarterback finished with 177 yards and was 18 of 34 with no touchdowns and one interception. Cal had 109 rushing yards with Jayden Ott finishing the game with 93 yards.

Next Saturday the Bears will take on the Washington State Cougars at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

San Jose State Spartans Beat CSU East Bay 77-61 in an Exhibition Game

San Jose, CA – In the Event Center at San Jose State University it’s the SJSU Spartans against Cal State East Bay in an exhibition game and these two teams are ready to showcase their skills before this long basketball season. The Spartans won it 77-61 defeating visiting CSU East Bay at Provident Credit Union Event Center in San Jose.

The first half started off with CSU East Bay taking over the momentum of the half. Forward Grady Lewis led East Bay in points with eight and his eight points were a major part of what kept the momentum up. For San Jose State they played a good game on the perimeter, but the post offense was being clamped on by this East Bay defense.

When William Humer got in the game the post offense picked up and he led the Spartans in points with seven in the first half. San Jose State’s offense really turned on when free throws gave them a rally and the Spartans went on a 9-0 run for the last 2:13 of the half and when the first half ended 31-27 SJSU Spartans with a lot of energy radiating from the offense. 

The Spartans continued running off their momentum from the first half by taking it straight to CSU East Bay as the second half started. East Bay began using a tap defense that seemed like it was going to slow the Spartans down, but it didn’t.

Even with the pressure SJSU was running with the lead, holding down a 20 point lead halfway through the second half. The offense here was led by MJ Amey Jr. who whether it was at the free throw line or the three point line, he found ways to score (15 points).

The second half pressure kicked up for East Bay with a 9-0 run at one point that lasted a minute, but the Spartans were still fighting them off. The final three minutes of the game was a tad sloppy for the Spartans, but wasn’t sloppy enough to detour the lead they had. Latrell Davis, who only had three points in the first half, went crazy in the second half, getting to the line to keep SJSU up (13 points).

The final buzzer sounded and the final score was 77-61 San Jose State and this exhibition game was great practice for what the Spartans have ahead. The three standout stars for SJSU were MJ Amey Jr., William Humer, and Latrell Davis

Next game for SJSU is their season opener against UC Irvine on November 7th and it will be a home game for the Spartans.

#1 New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox is on the long term injured list. Fox was injured on Thursday night against the Carolina Hurricanes in a 2-1 win. Fox was injured in the first period Fox collided with the Hurricanes Sebastian Aho leg on leg with 7:57 left in the period. Fox could be out from ten to 24 days. How much of impact will Fox injury have on the Rangers?

#2 In nine games the Dallas Stars 39 year old forward Joe Pavelski is lighting up the lamp like he was in the prime of his career. So far Pavelski has ten points, with four goals and six assists. On Thursday Pavelski had a goal and two assists in the Stars 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.

#3 Every hockey player has his day if not every hockey player certainly the Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart and forward Sean Courturier each player is day to day. Hart has a mid body injury he got in a 5-2 loss against the Buffalo Sabres on on Wednesday. Courturier suffered a suffered a lower body injury and ended up playing Wednesday. Courturier was called up from the AHL Leigh Valley team. Courturier was injured during the game.

#4 Chicago Blackhawks forward Taylor Hall could be back in the line up he got hurt against Florida Panthers on Saturday. Hall missed the last two games due to a left shoulder injury. Hawks head coach Luke Richardson said that Hall looked great in practice. Hall is day to day and Richardson said he wants to be cautious before putting Hall back in the line up.

#5 When the San Jose Sharks lost their last game in Washington 3-1 after having a 1-0 lead until the third period when the Capitals scored three times for their ninth loss in the row it was the goal of the Sharks to try and win at home against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. Who would have thought the Sharks would think they were in the movie “The Mighty Ducks” as Sharks goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen saw a barrage of Canucks goals six goals in all before MacKenzie Blackwood relieved him in net and gave up four goals himself. The Sharks have now lost ten straight games.

#1 Mary, the San Jose Sharks continue their skid on Thursday they took a beat down from the Vancouver Canucks at SAP Center in a 10-1 loss it was their ninth consecutive defeat.

#2 The Canucks Quinn Hughes had himself a night scoring a goal and four assists and eight Canucks scored in the lopsided affair.

#3 Brock Boeser had two goals and an assist, Anthony Beauvillier scored twice in Beauviller’s 500th career game.

#4 The Sharks goaltenders saw the red lamp lit behind them quite a few times for starting goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen he faced 19 shots and allowed six goals and relief goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood saw 14 shots allowed and allowed four goals.

#5 This might be the Sharks best chance to get their first win of the season as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at SAP. The Penguins are 3-6-0. They have lost their last two games. Former Shark Erik Karlsson returns to San Jose for the first time since being dealt to the Penguins.

Warriors Win Another Last Second Game Against Thunder 141-139

In a second wild finish in as many nights, the Golden State Warriors won their fifth road game in a row 141-139 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Last Wednesday it was Klay Thompson who hit the winning shot and tonight it was Stephen Curry making a driving layup who closed this game out. Both of them hit those shots with next to nothing on the game clock.

After winning a thriller Wednesday night beating the Sacramento Kings 102-101 the Golden State Warriors (5-1) took on the Thunder (3-3) Friday night in another road game. Thompson was the hero in the game against the Kings hitting the winning shot with 0.2 seconds left on the clock and this starting roster will be looking for a fast start in this road game. They’re road record continues to be unblemished having won every away game so far this season, five in total.

Game recap: The Warriors took the lead after the opening quarter 38-33 but the Thunder came roaring back winning the second quarter 34-31. Despite winning the quarter, the Thunder trailed Golden State 69-67 as this game went into halftime. OKC continued to hang around as this game went on playing with tenacity and drive. Both teams were having incredible offensive games.

This was a crazy game from the very beginning. The Thunder brought their A-game knowing full well that they would have to if they wanted to get past Golden State. Despite the Warriors shooting at 55% going into the fourth quarter the Thunder did them one better shooting at close to 62%. The Warriors were shooting from downtown at 47% but again the Thunder were better shooting 53%. OKC won the third quarter 39-37 and after three this game was all tied up at 106.

Both teams were playing a great game and with five minutes left in the fourth quarter the Warriors trailed 129-127. Golden State continued to hang around in the quarter staying close. The Warriors excel at closing out games in the final minutes of games but the Thunder were playing some amazing offense.

This game was going down to the wire as the Thunder continued to press Golden State and the game was a long way from being done. Could there be another last second win for Golden State in this game?

With under three minutes left in the game again it was Thompson to the rescue hitting a three and tying up the game at 133. This game was far from decided with 2:09 on the clock and the Thunder holding a slim 134-133 lead.

Every possession for the rest of the game was critical for both teams with 1:41 left. Head Coach Steve Kerr challenged a call in the closing minutes which failed. Not long after, there was another review which went the Warriors way.

This game had entered the realm of officially crazy. There was less than a minute left in the game and OKC had a 136-135 lead. Thompson was fouled and going to the line he hit both free throws giving Golden State the lead 137-136 in another nail-biter.

Another challenge from Golden State failed with 32.5 ticks on the clock. This game had come down to the final 21 seconds and it was still anybody’s game with the shot clock turned off. There were 16 seconds left in regulation and this game was tied at 139. Golden State had possession and 16 seconds is more than enough time for Golden State to nail this game down.

With Draymond Green touching the rim on a Curry shot, the winning shot was nullified or was it? While Green did touch the rim, the Thunder’s Josh Giddey grabbed the net and the shot was called good for a 141-139 win as the clock ran out on OKC.

The Warriors had their fifth road win in a row keeping their record unblemished. For a second game in a row the Warriors exhibited a championship finish.

This game went down to the wire with two teams that put forth terrific offensive effort. Curry finished with 28 points and hit the game winning shot. Dario Saric had the high off the bench with 20 points.

The Thunder had the Warriors on the ropes for the entire second half until the final 16 seconds of play but came up short. Every OKC starter finished with double digits, and Loguentz Dort had the high for the entire game with 29 points.

Golden State continues on this road trip looking for their sixth road win of the season traveling to Cleveland to take on the Cavaliers at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse this Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Oakland A’s relocation podcast with Daniel Dullum: Former A’s executive Andy Dolich says MLB owners should reject A’s relocation; Mayor, Oakland City Council, and Port of Oakland call for press conference Tuesday

On the A’s relocation podcast with Daniel:

#1 Former Oakland A’s executive Andy Dolich wrote his own commentary in the Mercury News telling MLB owners to vote no on the A’s move to Las Vegas and keep them in the sixth largest market in Oakland and go back and finish negotiating with the Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and the city of Oakland.

#2 Dolich said that MLB owners would be making a huge mistake if they were to leave the sixth largest TV market for the smallest and that every possible effort should be made to keep the A’s in Oakland where they belong.

#3 Dolich was an A’s executive under the Haas family between 1980-1994. Dolich and the A’s won three American League Championships getting in the World Series in 1989-1990 and won one of those World Series in 1989 against the San Francisco Giants. Dolich says the A’s can win in Oakland and team owner John Fisher just won’t spend the money to do it and the owners should not vote for the relocation.

#4 Dolich said that the A’s attendance is not because the A’s are the worst team in baseball but because it’s self inflicted as a mechanism to turn their customers off and the A’s can point to poor attendance for wanting to get out of Oakland.

#5 Dolich also wrote that he’s in favor of keeping the A’s at the Oakland Coliseum location and build the Coliseum complex to professional sports. Build a state of the art ball park for the A’s, a stadium to lure an NFL team. Have retail, hotels, and restaurants to lure customers that can change the Coliseum, neighborhood and bring more fans to East Oakland.

#6 The problem with all of these scenarios is that A’s owner John Fisher is not selling. If the deal does fall through or the owners do vote no will he go back to the City of Oakland with hat in hand and try all over again to get a ball park built at Howard Terminal?

#7 Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, the Oakland City Council, and the Port of Oakland are holding a press conference on Tue Nov 7 at Oakland City Hall regarding a proposal to keep the A’s in Oakland. Although a deal and a plan is already worked out to relocate the A’s upon the MLB owner vote Nov 14-16th in Arlington. The City of Oakland could use litigation to stop MLB and the Oakland A’s from relocating the team if the City can get a deal to build a Howard Terminal ballpark and show they can produce financing to keep the team in Oakland.

Wolf is stellar for Wranglers in 1-0 shutout win over Barracuda

Dustin Wolf stopped all 27 shots he faced as he needed was one goal to preserve a Calgary Wranglers 1-0 shutout victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Friday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Calgary have won five games in a row and remain unbeaten in regulation. San Jose has dropped six games in a row.

Matt Coronato broke the seal early in the first period with a do-it-yourself goal for Calgary (6-0-1-0). Coronato intercepted a clearing attempt by Henry Thrun at center ice. He skated inside the ‘Cuda zone before firing in a wrist shot past ‘Cuda goalie Magnus Chrona for his first goal of the season at the 4:07 mark of the first period. Rory Kerins was credited with the only assist on the play.

A spirited fight between Scott Sabourin and Alex Gallant at the 10:14 mark was the highlight of the opening 20 minutes. Calgary out shot San Jose 11-6 at the first intermission. Wolf stoned Thomas Bordeleau on a breakaway in the period.

San Jose (1-4-3-0) struggled on the power play despite having three opportunities, including a full two-minute five on three advantage to start the middle frame. Wolf and the Wranglers penalty kill held down the fort to keep the Barracuda off the scoreboard.

Calgary survived a late rush from San Jose late in the third period when they pulled Chrona for an extra attacker in the final minute of regulation.

Wolf (5-0-0) recorded his first shutout of the season, his eighth of his AHL career, and second against San Jose. Chrona (0-3-1), who had his strongest game of the young season, made 34 saves on 35 shots in suffering the tough luck loss.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 0-for-5 on the power play. Calgary was 0-for-4.

Wolf remained undefeated against San Jose as he improved his record to 12-0.

Chrona was called up by the San Jose Sharks after the game and will serve as the backup to Makenzie Blackwood in Saturday’s contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the SAP Center.

UP NEXT: San Jose and Calgary conclude their two-games series on Sunday at 11:00am at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
