SAN JOSE, Calif. – SAP Center was rocking as the San Jose Sharks took down the back-to-back champion Florida Panthers thanks to a tremendous night on the penalty kill and Yaraslov Askarov turning away all but one shot he faced. Macklin Celebrini scored in his third straight game with his 10th of the season. As the Sharks pocket another big victory the second on back to back nights this time with a 3-1 win over the Panthers.

Coming off of a gritty 2-1 win Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets, the Sharks took the ice looking to sweep the set of back-to-back games on Saturday. The back-to-back Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers stood as the tough task in the way of the Sharks. Both teams entered Saturday night with 15 points but the Panthers were heavily favored.

A spirited team teal played hard on the puck from the start, generating many scoring opportunities from the minute the puck dropped. The Sharks outshot the Panthers 14-6 in the first period including Macklin Celebrini’s 10th goal of the season to put the Sharks in the lead. Celebrini is atop the league list in scorers with 24 points on the young season. The young superstar has hammered the gas to start the season with no plans to slow down.

Linemate Will Smith found himself with the assist on Celebrini’s goal, as the two teamed up to net one for the second night in a row. It was Smith’s ninth assist of the year racking up 15 points just 16 games in.

The young core has sparked much excitement around San Jose, sending waves through the league while winning their third game in a row Saturday night and their sixth of the last eight. “I think we just feel like we can win any game,” said Mario Ferraro who blocked three shots in 22:44 time on ice and played a big part of the Sharks penalty kill that kept the Panthers scoreless as they went 0-for-5 on the man advantage.

An even bigger part of the penalty kill was Yaraslov Askarov, who stopped 38 of 39 shots and made some important saves in the third period. San Jose has boasted great goaltending in this recent stretch and both men in the crease have received great praise from the skaters in front of them.

Macklin Celebrini spoke very highly of Askarov and Nedeljkovic saying, “They’re doing such a great job for us… just making saves when we need them to… you say your goalie is your best penalty killer and they have been”.

The Sharks were not only great in their defensive end Saturday night, but also played a lot of valuable minutes in the offensive zone, racking up 23 shots on goal and cashing in on an Adam Gaudette deflection on a wrister from Dmitry Orlov in the second period to make it a 2-0 San Jose lead.

Brad Marchand answered back for the Panthers just seconds later to bring Florida within a goal but that was the closest they would get. The Sharks stayed strong defensively with sticks and bodies in every shooting and passing lane, blocking a total of 18 shots.

The display of inspired hockey lit up SAP Center Saturday night with a nearly sold out crowd making a strong impression on the team. “This was awesome. This was awesome spirit, I mean, I was like jeez… The boys love it. The team feels it”, described Yaraslov Askarov. When asked if he felt excitement growing around the Sharks, Askarov simply replied, “Yes”.

Capped off by an Alex Wennberg empty-netter, the Sharks won one of their most spirited games of the season, taking down the back-to-back champs 3-1. The excitement was definitely felt inside of SAP Center with high hopes for the upcoming stretch of the season.

The Sharks will be back in action Tuesday night in Minnesota and hope to just keep swimming through this fiery stretch of winning hockey.

Stockton Kings game wrap: Kings just couldn’t get past Clippers in 102-97 loss in opener

STOCKTON–The Stockton Kings took the court for the first time since being named G-League Champions on Saturday evening, as they hosted the San Diego Clippers. It was a close contest as the Clippers came away with a five point 102-97 win on opening night.

There’s been quite a bit of turnover during the offseason, as only a few players from the championship-winning squad returned, and there’s even a new face on the sideline, as Will Scott took over the reins as head coach.

Before the opening tip-off, the Kings unveiled their championship banner, and returning guard Dexter Dennis spoke to the crowd.

Once the game got underway and the festivities were concluded, it was back to business as usual for the Kings. Undrafted Sacramento Kings prospect Dylan Cardwell, out of Auburn, got the Kings’ first points of the new campaign.

The Clippers got out to an early, but small lead, but before long, the Kings had tied things up. Toward the end of the first quarter, the Kings went on a 12-point run, which saw them take the largest lead so far in the matchup, 27-14. At the end of the first frame, Stockton led 34-18. Stockton maintained their double-digit lead through the second quarter, taking a 61-43 lead into halftime.

The Clippers would cut into the lead slightly early in the third quarter, but not nearly enough to put pressure on the Kings.

That would change late in the quarter, though, as at one point the lead was down to just seven points, marking the first time the Kings’ lead was down to single digits since the first quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was down to 77-72.

With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Clippers had cut the Kings’ lead down to just a single point and took their first lead since the opening frame moments later.

From there, the lead was traded back and forth, with neither side able to truly pull ahead of their opposition. Ultimately, the Kings would fall short to kick off their season, losing to the Clippers.

North Carolina held off a late Stanford rally on Saturday and defeated the Cardinal 20-15 in Atlantic Coast Conference football at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Stanford (3-7 overall, 2-5 ACC) lost despite outgaining the Tar Heels 320 total yards to 253 and holding the edge in time of possession – 32:37 to 27:23.

The Tar Heels (4-5 overall, 2-3 ACC) opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first quarter with a Rece Verhoff 27-yard field goal. Stanford tied the game at 3-3 on the final play of the first half, an Emmet Kenney field goal from 38 yards out.

UNC broke the deadlock at 7:43 of the third quarter when, on first down at the Cardinal 20-yard line, Gio Lopez completed a touchdown pass to Davion Gause, giving the Tar Heels a 10-3 lead.

Verhoff hit a field goal from 48 yards out at 4:16 of the fourth quarter, and Lopez completed a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Shipp, extending the Tar Heels lead to 20-3.

The Cardinal fought back, and with 8:28 remaining, Cole Tabb ran for a 1-yard touchdown, and with 1:48 to play, Elijah Brown, completed a 24-yard scoring pass to CJ Williams. The Cardinal failed to convert 2-point conversions.

Brown completed 27 of 39 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown. And was picked off once. He was also sacked nine times. Micah Ford was the Cardinal’s top rusher with 68 yards on 17 carries. Caden High caught 10 passes for 102 yards, and Williams and Sam Roush each made six receptions.

Lopez was 18 of 25 passing for 203 yards for UNC. He was sacked twice. As a team, the Tar Heels gained 50 yards on 27 attempts. Kobe Paysour caught six passes for 54 yards, and Shipp caught five for 83 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinal have a bye week before hosting California in the 28th Big Game on Saturday, Nov. 22. Kickoff time has yet to be announced.

Air Force takes advantage of SJSU turnovers and run right through the Spartans for a 26-16 Victory

Despite the San Jose State University Spartans hard efforts they fell ten points short for a win against the visiting Air Force Falcons at Spartan Stadium in San Jose on Sat Nov 8, 2025 (SJSU Spartans photo)

By Lincoln Juarez

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State turns the ball over three times in route to disappointing 26-16 loss to Air Force in conference battle. SJSU quarterbacks passed for 341 yards but did not pass for a touchdown as the lone endzone finder came via the struggling run game.

The Spartans kicked off a Mountain West matchup against Air Force Saturday afternoon at CEFCU Stadium. Coming in at 2-6 overall Air Force aimed for their second conference win of the season, while the Spartans hoped to shoot above .500 in conference play.

The SJSU defense provided the spark in the opening quarter with two three-and-out drives forced on the Air Force offense.

The Spartans’ first drive spanned nearly two minutes resulting in a Denis Lynch 31-yard field goal for the first score of the game. That was the only time the Spartans scored in the first half.

On State’s next drive, quarterback Walker Eget scrambled up field for 12 yards and a first down but took a hard hit on his way to the ground. Eget came out of the game for a few plays but luckily re-entered on the next drive. Eget threw two interceptions as part of the three SJSU turnovers which resulted in Air Force points.

The Falcons took a handle on the game in the second quarter outscoring the Spartans 16-0, including a safety on one of the wilder plays you’ll see, earning a commanding 16-3 lead going into halftime. Air Force totalled 94 offensive yards with only 11 passing yards as they ran the ball right through the SJSU defense on 24 total plays in the second quarter.

State answered back with another field goal in the third quarter before eventually scoring 10 in the fourth to make it somewhat close toward the end. Freshman, Steve Chavez-Soto rushed the only Spartan touchdown as part of his team-leading 49 rushing yards in the game.

Air Force matched the Spartans’ 10 point fourth quarter to come out on top with a 26-16 victory improving to 2-4 in the Mountain West Conference this year.

With no turnovers and a better run game, the Spartans most likely come out on top of this game. However, it’s onto the next for San Jose State as they head to Reno next week for a matchup against last place Nevada.

Barracuda dominate Wranglers in 4-1 win, sweep series

The San Jose Barracuda scored three goals in the first period and never looked back in a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Wranglers on Saturday afternoon at Scotiabank Saddledome.

San Jose swept the weekend series over its Pacific Division rival and have won three out of their past four games, which includes a four-game point streak. Calgary has dropped two games in a row after a five-game win streak.

Egor Afanasyev scored his first goal in a Barracuda sweater at the 8:00 mark of the first period. Afanasyev picked up the puck at the redline and danced into the Wranglers zone before wiring a wrist shot to the far side that beat Wranglers goalie Ivan Prosvetov to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.

San Jose doubled its lead with a power play goal late in the opening frame. Pavol Regenda came away with the puck after a scrum from behind the net. Regenda centered the puck to a wide open Kasper Halttunen who buried a one-timer past Prosvetov for his third goal of the season at the 15:03 mark.

41 seconds later Halttunen intercepted a clearing attempt by a Wrangler’s player inside Calgary’s zone. After a give and go with Jake Furlong, Halttunen blasted a slap shot in from the left slot for his second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season.

Calgary finally got on the scoreboard late in the second period with a power play goal. Aydar Suniev sent a pass into the crease where Lucas Ciona beat Cuda goalie Gabriel Carriere with a wrist shot from point-blank range for his first goal of the season at the 17:43 mark.

“I thought we fought hard for the last forty minutes and played the right way,” Wranglers head coach Brett Sutter said.

Colin White iced the game for San Jose with an empty net goal, his second of the season, with 1:37 remaining in the game.

Carriere finished the gamer stopping 26 of the 27 saves he faced to earn his second win of the season. Prosvetov made 27 saves on 30 shots in the losing effort.

“You can’t take any games for granted, you’ve got to go out there and play your best,” Suniev said.

GAME NOTES: San Jose finished 1-for-3 on the power play. Calgary went 1-for-2.

The Three Stars of the Game: 1) Halttunen (2G,0A) 2) Carriere (26/27) 3) Afanasyev (1G,0A)

Cardinal put Grizzlies into hibernation 91-68, on Saturday Afternoon on the Farm

STANFORD, Calif. — The Stanford Cardinal (2-0) held back the Montana Grizzlies (2-1) 91-68, inside the friendly confines of Maples Pavilion.

Stanford got off to a great start, with a 9-0 run from the opening tip-off. Freshman sensation Ebuka Okorie was the catalyst for the home team’s initial burst. He performed a steal, then converted that into a fastbreak layup, putting the Cardinal up 2-0.

Okorie would add another steal and six more points to his early production before the midway break in action. Stanford led by nine almost immediately, but the Grizzlies did claw their way back into contention.

As a matter of fact, Montana had a 5-0 run of their own, and had a chance to take their only lead with a layup attempt. Unfortunately for the visiting bears, a 5-point turnaround occurred. As the Cardinal defense caused a turnover, they parlayed that into a dagger 3 by senior guard Jeremy Dent-Smith.

The Grizzlies continued to fight back, despite that early setback. Although Stanford led by as many as 11 points, Montana was able to reduce the deficit to single digits several times. When the recess bell rang, the Cardinal was ahead by 10 points, 35-25.

Neither squad had a player in double-figures. Although Okorie’s 8 points and 2 steals were impressive for the Cardinal. Two players from Montana also amassed 8 points. Senior guard Te’Jon Sawyer tallied 8 points and 5 rebounds, while teammate and junior guard Brooklyn Hicks also chipped in his eight for good measure.

Stanford came out in the second half with vigor and an attitude to completely take over the contest. Multiple players from both sides achieved the 10+ points benchmark.

The Cardinal opened up a lead as high as late in the second half, but the Grizzlies kept competing. Although the game was out of hand, Montana did show effort, as they performed a 7-0 run in the last minutes of the game. Their field goal percentage from 2 & 3 was improved in the second half.

Stanford’s numbers were also better in the second stanza. Especially from beyond the arc. Although both teams rebounded at the same clip, turnovers were the determining factors. The Cardinal forced 20 turnovers, while committing 5 of their own. They also generated 14 steals and 6 blocks against their opponent. The +/- numbers were like a Math problem: Stanford (+23) compared to Montana’s (-23) .

With all the number crunching, Stanford managed to win by 23 points, 91-68. They lead from wire to wire, and had only one moment when that could have changed to a different scenario.

Four players for the Cardinal reached double-digits scoring. Freshman Phenom Ebuka Okorie led everyone with 29 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Senior guard Benny Gealer put up 13 points, while redshirt-sophomore Aidan Camman and senior AJ Rohosy both contributed 12 points.

Montana also presented four players 10+ points. Money Williams led with 19 points and 7 rebounds, and the other three, Brooklyn Hicks (13), Te’Jon Sawyer (12) and Kenyon Aguino (12) did their part.

Stanford will next be in action Wednesday, November 12 at Maples, hosting the Montana State Bobcats at 7 PM PT on ACC Extra. Montana heads down to Sin City to take on UNLV Tuesday, November 11 at 7 PM PT.

Santa Cruz Warriors game wrap: Remix knocks off Warriors in season opener 120-107

Santa Cruz Shows Heart but Falls Short as Remix Rule the Opener 120-107

Santa Cruz Warriors can’t get by the Rip City Remix in the season opener on Fri Nov 7, 2025 in G League action on Fri Nov 7, 2025 (photo by Santa Cruz Warriors)

Fri Nov 7, 2025

By Brien Gingrich, Santa Cruz Voice

SANTA CRUZ–6:59 PM. The house lights drop at Kaiser Permanente Arena, and the buzz is back — a new G-League season on the coast. But opening night didn’t wait long to turn rough.

7:04 PM. Nearly three full minutes tick off the clock before the Warriors finally get on the board. Rip City Remix race out ahead, drilling open looks and pounding the glass. The home crowd keeps trying to will Santa Cruz into rhythm, but the rim feels sealed shut.

End of 1st. Rip City 40, Santa Cruz 21. The Remix are getting anything they want — downhill drives, corner threes, second-chance buckets.

Mid-2nd. L.J. Cryer finally steadies the offense with a couple of pull-ups, and Marques Bolden starts to make his presence felt inside. Still, every Santa Cruz surge gets answered by Blake Hinson or Dillon Jones.

“We dug ourselves a hole early,” said head coach Lainn Wilson. “They came out hitting, and we were chasing from the start. You can’t spot a team twenty and expect to climb back. That’s on us.”

Halftime. Rip City 70, Santa Cruz 48. The crowd wants something to cheer for, but the Warriors head to the locker room needing a reset more than a pep talk.

3rd Quarter. Santa Cruz finds a pulse. Cryer takes command — step-back three, floater, a feed to Bolden for a dunk. The communication tightens on defense, the hustle picks up, and the lead dips under twenty for the first time since the opening frame.

“I thought we responded well after halftime,” Wilson said. “The talk on defense got better, we went after loose balls, and we started to win the effort plays that define games in this league.”

4th Quarter. Jack Clark ignites off the bench — 17 points with fearless drives — and Trey Galloway adds steals that flip the tempo. The Warriors trim it to single digits, but fatigue and execution catch up late. Rip City hits clutch jumpers and closes it out.

“It’s the first one of the year, and you can tell guys are still finding their legs,” Wilson admitted. “The pace in this league is relentless. That’ll come with reps.”

Final. Rip City Remix 120, Santa Cruz Warriors 107. Cryer leads with 25 points and 7 assists, Bolden posts 15 and 8, Galloway adds 15 and 3 steals. The Warriors actually win the second half — 59-50 — but the early drought was too much to overcome.

Postgame, Wilson’s tone was even — disappointed but forward-looking. “The group’s disappointed, but that’s good,” he said. “It means they care. We’ve got another shot tomorrow, and the focus now is to clean up the first-half mistakes and build on that second-half fight.”

Darryl Strawberry – Story of Redemption –

By Amaury Pi-González

Darryl Strawberry was pardoned by President Trump for his 1995 federal tax evasion conviction. The pardon covers his plea of guilty to tax fraud, though it does not apply to his separate state-level drug-related charges.

The reason being the pardon, according to the White House statement, is that Strawberry served time and paid back the taxes owed after his conviction, and has since become active in ministry and maintained sobriety for over a decade.

Strawberry Ministries, founded by Darryl and Tracy Strawberry, is a ministry in St. Peter, Missouri. It involves speaking at correctional facilities, men’s retreats, plus other events and stories they share of personal transformation and recovery from addiction.

The ministry’s mission is to empower individuals and families through faith in Jesus Christ. Strawberry is a good man, he was a very good player, good with teammates, fans, and media alike.

His career baseball statistics include a .259 batting average,335 home runs, 1,000 RBIs, 221 stolen bases in 17 major league seasons, including the National League 1983 Rookie of the Year, 8-time All Star who played for the Mets, Dodgers, Yankees, and Giants.

He played right field and hit in the fifth position during the 1986 All-Star Game at Astrodome, Houston. A game I had the pleasure of covering. Redemption includes forgiveness of sins, freedom from sin, and reconciliation with God.

Congratulations to Darryl Strawberry on his well-deserved pardon. His career was marked by both great success and personal struggles with addiction and legal issues, but he has since found faith and is now an ordained minister Congratulations to Darryl Strawberry.

Sacramento Kings podcast Tony Harvey:

#1 It wasn’t even a close contest at Golden One Center on Friday night as the Oklahoma City Thunder (9-1) took care of business with a 30 point 132-101 win over the Sacramento Kings (3-6).

#2 Not enough offense some lapses in the outside shot and too much Thunder defense in the paint for the Kings to try and keep up.

#3 Thunder top scorers Isaiah Hartenstein with 33 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 30 points there was very little the Kings could do to stop both of them.

#4 The Kings got lots of scoring help with ten players in double figures, Russell Westbrook led with 24 points but it wasn’t enough to get the job done against OKC who dominated with a 30 point win.

#5 Up next for the Kings the Minnesota Timberwolves (5-4) Sun Nov 9th. The Wolves who picked up their fifth win of the season over the Utah Jazz (3-6) at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City rather handedly 137-97 in a 40 point win on Friday night.
