San Jose State Spartans Lose In Overtime To Cal Poly Mustangs 81-77

Looking for their fourth win in a row, the San José men’s basketball team took on the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Spartans won their final two games at the 2023 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam, against Norfolk State and Hampton, then returned home and defeated North Dakota State. The contest against Cal Poly was the first of three games on the road as the Spartans will play at Montana on Saturday and North Dakota State on Monday. The Spartans suffered the their first loss of this three game road trip 81-77.

The first half was all in the control of the Spartans with Trey Anderson leading the team in points with 10. 50% from the field and 50% from the three plus only three turnovers, the Spartans were feeling it on offense, but keeping Cal Poly from really catching a stride was a big key to maintaining a lead for SJSU. At the end of the half Spartans hold a lead 38-30. 

The Spartans biggest problem this season is when they lose, it’s usually because they aren’t able to close it out. This seemed to be the case early on in the second half when Cal Poly was able to bring the game within two with 13 minutes left in the game.

Cal Poly eventually took the lead for the first time in the half at 47-46, but it was clear the Spartans had to lock in. Late into the half the Spartans started to run away with the lead and it was because Anderson, Tibet Gorener, and MJ Amey Jr. who all had double digit points, but in the last minute of the game Cal Poly found a way to push it and bring the game within three points.

In the last 13 seconds, Cal Poly made a point game, but a clutch two free throws by Amey Jr. made it a three point game. Cal Poly’s Kobe Sanders made a three to tie and when Alvaro Cardenas missed the game winning three, we went to overtime. 69-69. 

Overtime it went back and forth between the teams, but with 18 seconds Cal Poly had a four point lead and SJSU missed three point opportunities, but settled for a two and were down two with three seconds left in OT. 79-77 Cal Poly and Kobe Sanders was at the free throw line. Sanders made both free throws and went back up by four and that was the end of the game, Cal Poly wins 81-77. 

Unfortunate loss for SJSU on the road to close out November, but they stay on the road for their next game against Montana in Missoula, Montana on December 2nd and hope to start the month back in stride before they begin conference play games.

OAKLAND–As the sign “Rooted in Oakland” is scheduled to be removed from the west wall of the Oakland Coliseum before the beginning of the 2024 season, another team has been rooted in Oaktown. They are the Oakland Ballers or the Oakland B’s.

The group says they have raised $2 million from investors and pledged to the community that they “will never leave Oakland.” Anybody can become a part owner of the team by contributing to this initial push. Like the NFL Green Bay Packers, the Packers are owned by more than 500,000 community shareholders. Owned by the city’s fans.

This Tuesday, the independent Pioneer League announced that it will add a new expansion team, the Oakland Ballers, to the newly planned Pacific West Division. The Pioneer League is an independent baseball league that operates in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States.

Its teams are not directly affiliated with Major League Baseball. It is designated as an MLB Partner League. So, Oaklanders can now claim: “We already have an expansion team.”

Starting in 2024, the Oakland Ballers will play in the Independent League. There are two types of professional minor league systems: Independent and Affiliated. The Ballers will be Independent and, therefore, not affiliated to any of the 30 major league teams.

This league is considered a Rookie-level league. And the teams are Missoula PaddleHeads, Ogden Raptors, Rockey Mountain Vibes, and Billings Mustangs.

The Oakland B’ s are scheduled to begin their season in May 2024 and will play their home games at the Laney College baseball field in Oakland, with a capacity of approximately 800. 

Throughout the season, each team plays in 96 games, from May to September, in a split schedule between the North Division (Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Glacier, and Idaho Falls) and the South Division (NoCo, Rocky Mountain, Grand Junction, Boise and Ogden. (This was before the recent announcement of the Oakland Ballers.

Some might consider this some kind of a joke, but it is not. People who like organized baseball can enjoy a new team in Oakland since the: “old team, the one that won four World Series in Major League Baseball since 1968, has decided to tell Oakland fans, “Adiós, nos vamos a Las Vegas”.

Ballers Rooted in Oakland?  As Yogi Berra would say, “Déjà vu all over again.”

Sacramento Kings game wrap: Kings get the edge on Golden State 124-123

SACRAMENTO–The Sacramento Kings were back in action on Tuesday night. The Kings returned home after a long road trip around the US. The Kings played well on the trip, going 4-2. However, an unfriendly opponent welcomed the Kings back home after four days off.

The Golden State Warriors were in town to face the Kings on Tuesday with a 7 PM PST tip-off. The Kings last played on the 24th against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Kings would win the game and clinch West Group C in the in-season tournament 124-123.

In the first quarter, the Kings played poorly. The Kings defense was atrocious in the first quarter, as they allowed the Warriors to score 37 points in the first quarter. The Kings defense was nonexistent, and the offense couldn’t pick up the slack as the Kings scored 29 points in the quarter.

The Kings were struggling again against the team that had appeared unbeatable by the Kings this season. The Kings would look for a spark in the second quarter to get back on track.

The Kings could have started the second quarter better. The Warriors expanded the lead early in the second quarter to 15 points with 6:12 to go in the half. The Kings were leaving much to be desired on the court in a big matchup on TNT.

The Kings needed help to get any rhythm going on the offensive end of the floor. The Warriors outscored the Kings in the second quarter 35-26. The Kings were down 72-55 heading into halftime. It was an embarrassing performance from the Kings in the first half. The Kings would look for any answer in the third quarter to make this a game.

In the third quarter, the Kings didn’t play much better to start the quarter. The Kings looked lifeless on the offensive end of the floor. However, the Kings did battle and got a few points black. The Kings outscored the Warriors 40-32 in the third quarter to come back a bit in the game.

The Kings would go into the game’s final quarter trailing 104-95. In the fourth quarter, the Kings would need to play some defense for the first time in the game to have a chance to win.

In the fourth quarter, the Kings made it a game. The Kings stormed back with an intensity not seen all game to make things interesting down the stretch. The Kings would win the game 124-123. The Kings offense was able to score 29 points in the fourth quarter. However, the difference was the Kings defense. The Kings defense held the Warriors to 19 points in the final 12 minutes.

The defense was the difference in the game for the Kings as they got their first win of the season against the Warriors. Malik Monk proved invaluable down the stretch as he hit the game’s last shot with seven seconds left to seal the deal.

The Warriors took the ball down the court with no timeouts, and Steph Curry missed a deep contested three-pointer to lose the game. The Kings were led in the victory by De’Aaron Fox, who had 29 points. Steph Curry and Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 29 points each.

The Kings also clinched West Group C in the NBA in-season tournament with the victory. They will host the Pelicans in the knockout round on Monday at 7 PM PST.

Up Next: The Kings will stay home to take on the LA Clippers on Wednesday at 7 PM PST. The Kings will be playing on the second night of a back-to-back.

The Golden State Warriors (8-10) squared off against the Sacramento Kings (10-6) for the third time this season. The Warriors won both heavily contested games. Tuesday night’s game was another thriller, but the Sacramento Kings turned the tables on the Warriors as they returned from a 17-point halftime deficit to nip them 124-123.

It was truly a tale of two halves. The Warriors scored 72 points in the first two-quarters of play. The Warriors big three of guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson had their game going. Wiggins tallied 18, Thompson 17, and Curry 16. The Warriors had the Kings on their heels.

At one point in the first half, Golden State led by 24. Sacramento rallied late in the second period to finish the first half trailing 72-55. The Warriors held Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox to nine points. The only scorer in double-figures for Sacramento was Harrison Barnes, a former Warrior, with 12.

As fans of the NBA know, good teams can overcome a big deficit. The Kings have a high-powered offense led by Fox and Sabonis. The Warriors contained Sabonis for the entire game but did not have an answer for Fox, Kevin Huerter, or Malik Monk. The Kings’ head coach, Mike Brown, a defensive specialist, had his team ready to slow the Warriors’ offense in the third quarter.

The Warriors did score 32 points, but the Kings put 40 on the board to trail by nine, 104-95 at the end of the quarter. The Warriors helped the Kings as they continued to commit too many fouls. The Kings had 20 free throws in the period. The Warriors were also sloppy as they turned the ball over too many times, not only in the third quarter, but two late turnovers in the last 50 seconds of the fourth quarter cost them the game.

The Kings outscored the Warriors 29-19 in the fourth quarter to win. The Kings continued to chip away at the Warriors advantage. The Kings went ahead 111-110 late in the quarter. It was their first lead since early in the first quarter. The Warriors answered the challenge to take the lead by six, 121-115.

Fox hit a three to cut the lead to three. Andrew Wiggins made a two-point bucket to make it 123-119. With about 50 seconds left, Curry made a bad pass that led to the Kings making it a one-point game, 123-122. The Warriors had the ball. However, Draymond Green made another turnover. The Kings took the ball down and scored to go ahead 124-123. The Kings’ defense held to give them the victory.

Game Notes- With the loss, the W’s drop to 8-10. The Kings improved to 10-7. The Kings are now the top seed in their division for the in-season tournament.

The Warriors lost Chris Paul after the first quarter to soreness in his leg. Gary Payton II had to leave the game with a leg injury.

Wiggins and Curry led the team with 29 points each. Klay Thompson finished with 20. Moses Moody had 11, and Dario Saric ten.

Fox had 29 points and ten boards for Sacramento. Huerter and Monk each added 21 points. The Kings went to the free-throw line 42 times. They scored 26 points off Warrior turnovers.

The Warriors return home to the Chase Center to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday night. The game will start at 7 p.m.

Las Vegas Raiders podcast with Tony Renteria: Raiders just couldn’t do enough to get back in game Sunday

#1 In the first half of Sunday’s game at Allegiant Stadium the Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs were knotted up 14-14 and it looked as if the Raiders were going gain ground on the Chiefs.

#2 Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell had 240 yards and a touchdown. O’Connell is the quarterback that the Raiders are hoping that could be their future.

#3 Raiders running back Josh Jacobs with 20 carries, 110 yards, and one touchdown. He was key in the first half in the Raiders scoring.

#4 Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Meyers six receptions, 79 yards, one touchdown, the Raiders played good enough to win this game but as we were talking in the second half the Chiefs had a game plan but talking about Meyers he picked up a touchdown in this one on Sunday.

#5 The Raiders have the bye week on Sun Dec 3 and will return to action in Las Vegas on Sun Dec 10th against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are without Kirk Cousins at quarterback and are starting are starting Josh Dobbs. The Vikings have won five of their last six games. They did lose their last game last Sunday to the Broncos and host the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. How do you see the Raiders and Vikings matching up on the 10th?

Sharks Defeat Capitals 2-1, Bailey Assists GWG

The San Jose Sharks defeated the Washington Capitals 2-1 Monday at SAP Center. Fabian Zetterlund and Luke Kunin scored for the Sharks and Mackenzie Blackwood made 33 saves for the win. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Capitals and Darcy Kuemper made 21 saves in the loss.

Justin Bailey was signed to a two-way contract Monday. He has been playing for the Barracuda so far this season. Monday was his first game with the Sharks and his first NHL point of the season. He made a particular impact in board battles. The 6’4” Bailey seems like exactly the type of player the Sharks could use to fill out their thinned forward ranks.

Sharks Head Coach David Quinn said: “He’s our biggest forward and he can skate. And as you can see, he’s got a little bit of touch too. That was a great pass he made to Kunin on the winning goal. And he plays an honest game.”

Fabian Zetterlund gave the Sharks the lead midway through the first period. After taking a shot from the top of the face-off circle, he pulled up near the net and jumped on the rebound. Assists went to Nikita Okhotiuk and Mikael Granlund.

Washington’s Evgeny Kuznetsov tied the game late in the second period. After a long spell in the offensive zone, Kuznetsov’s shot bounced off of Blackwood and then off of Okhotiuk and into the net. Assists went to Trevor van Riemsdyk and Martin Fehervary.

Luke Kunin gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead with a power play goal at 12:48 of the third period. Justin Bailey won a battle along the boards before finding Kunin with a short pass. Assists went to Bailey and Ty Emberson. Bailey was signed to a two-way contract with the Sharks Monday.

The Capitals pulled their goaltender with just over a minute left but the Sharks held on. The final shot count was 34-23 Capitals. The second period saw the largest discrepancy, with Washington out-shooting San Jose 14-6. The Sharks power play went 1/3 and their penalty kill was perfect through three penalties. The teams were even in the faceoff circle.

Tomas Hertl was out Monday, having suffered a mid-body injury Sunday. The Sharks again had seven defensemen in the game and 11 forwards.

The Sharks next play on Thursday in Boston against the Bruins at 4:00 PM PT.

San Jose State Controls Whole Game Beat North Dakota State 78-65

San Jose, CA – The SJSU Spartans are back in San Jose after the Paradise Jam and face off against North Dakota State in non conference action. Paradise didn’t seem like a fleeting thing as the Spartans defeated the Bisons 78-65.

The first half San Jose State was in the lead the whole time, but only by a small margin. Almost the whole Spartans lineup was on the board, but it was Trey Anderson with seven points, who led the team in scoring. North Dakota State’s main problem was going 2-11 from three which left them fighting from behind even though they were out-rebounding the Spartans. By the end of the first half SJSU was up 32-27. 

The Spartans clicked on all cylinders in the second half and secured a victory the whole way through. Shooting 47.3% from the field and 45.8% from the three point line. Leading scorer Trey Anderson walked out with 21 points and MJ Amey Jr. locked in a double double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Scoring 78 points total the Spartans rolled North Dakota State by 13 points. 

The 5-2 San Jose State Spartans are feeling good after this game, but with only one day to rest it off, SJSU faces Cal Poly Novemer 29th in San Luis Obispo and they want to continue to close out games for W’s.

#1 Amaury, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal the Oakland A’s are looking at Globe Life Field in Arlington as a blue print for their Tropicana Ball Park. Globe Life was built in 2020 has a full retractable roof and seats 40,000. The A’s last proposal said they would seat 30,000 fans at the Tropicana in Vegas.

#2 A retractable roof at the A’s Vegas ball park most likely will only be opened maybe 10-11 times a season as it gets up to 102-1110 during the summer month of June, July and August. If the A’s have a retractable roof it will be at the cost of $100 million.

#3 Amaury, the A’s if they have the retractable roof will be using the park not only for baseball but for multi purpose events like concerts and public events. The question is can the A’s sell out every event like they say they can for the next 30 years some would say it’s doubtful.

#4 According to Dave Sampson the former Miami Marlins team president who podcasts on the show “Nothing Personal” said that the A’s deal to Vegas is not done yet despite the owners voting 30-0. There are two things that could hold things up John Fisher the team owner still needs to come up with his share of the construction money for the Vegas ballpark. Fisher is hedging his hopes that financing will be from tourism. The Vegas fan base will be too small to support the A’s but visitors from out of town are who the A’s are hanging their hats on.

#5 The question as to where the A’s play after 2024 is still up in the air as the Oakland Coliseum is the best location for the A’s to play 2025-27 in. The A’s have explored minor league parks and Oracle Park in San Francisco as places to go to but still don’t have an answer yet.
