#1 Former Tampa Bay Lightning and current Nashville Predator Steven Stamkos with 15 seconds left in their opener against Dallas Stars took a shot that hit the post and the Preds lost in Stamkos’ debut 4-3. It was not the kind of ending he wanted but he said he was excited about joining his new team in Nashville.

#2 Former Toronto Maple Leafs and current New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe lost against his former team the Leafs 4-2 on Thursday night. Keefe was looking for sweet revenge against the Leafs but the Leafs delivered on offense scoring three times in the first period pretty much putting the game out of reach.

#3 The Utah Hockey Club is off and running the former Arizona hockey team turned Utah in their first year of existence picked up another victory this time on Thursday in Elmont New York against the New York Islanders in a close one 5-4. Showing that Utah could be a competitive team this season down 4-3 in third period, they got a goal from Josh Doan at 18:06 to tie it 4-4 and an overtime goal from Dylan Guenther for the win at 2:18.

#4 Tough break for Boone Jenner of the Columbus Blue Jackets who was injured in practice on Oct 4th and had to have shoulder surgery last Wednesday. Jenner’s prognosis is that he could miss the rest of the 24-25 season. Jackets general manager David Waddell said “These things are probably 5-6 months,” Waddell added “Every individual is different. Five months puts you right at the beginning of March. Just see how it all plays out here in the next few months.

#5 The last surviving member of the 1956-60 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup winning teams Don Marshall has passed away at age 92. There were 12 players who were part of that five consecutive championship teams. Marshall amongst them a native Montrealer played 585 games for the Habs between 1951-63 with 254 points, 114 goals, and 140 assists. Marshall later did some broadcast with Montreal broadcasters Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin Jr as an analyst.

#1 Well Amaury, the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled it off with a 2-0 shoutout over the San Diego Padres on Friday night to advance to the next round of the playoffs winning game 5 and the series 3-2. Dodgers starter Yoshi Yamamoto was effective for five inning of work allowing just five hits and two strikeouts.

#2 The Dodgers face off against the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium for a 5:15pm PT on Sunday night start in game 1 of the NLCS. Starting pitcher for the Mets Kodai Senga (0-0 ERA 4.50) for the Dodgers Jack Flaherty (0-1, 6.75). The Mets took out the Philadelphia Phillies three games to four last Wednesday.

#3 Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt might win AL Manager of the Year just yet. Down 1-2 in the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers the Guardians came back to win game four 5-4 on Thursday to tie the series 2-2 and won game five 7-3 on Saturday to advance to the ALCS.

#4 The Guardians Lane Thomas had a big day with a grand slam home run and five RBIs. The Tigers starter Tarik Skubal got lit up by Thomas and ended up with a line of six plus innings, allowing six hits and five runs. Skubal had been a top contender for the AL Cy Young Award.

#5 The Guardians now face the New York Yankees in the ALCS for game 1 in the Bronx. These two teams have met over their history six times in October. They last met playing five games in the ALDS in 2022 with the Yankees winning the series.

Kings Drop Second Pre-Season Game To Golden State 109-106

The Sacramento Kings (0-2) led for much of their pre-season game Friday night with the Golden State Warriors (3-0) but it all fell apart in the final minutes of the fourth quarter as the Kings lost in their second meeting with Golden State 109-106.
The Kings De’Aaron Fox had the high for the team with 19 points. Off the bench Boogie Ellis was solid with 11 points. These guys still have a lot to work on as the regular season approaches. These pre-season games will go far in preparation for a solid start to the 2024-25 season.

Game recap: All eyes remain focused on the King’s acquisition DeMar DeRozan who had the high score in Wednesday’s game. How this guy will settle into the starting rotation remains the question that everyone is asking. He is looking forward to the season and giving the Kings the boost that they are needing for a successful season. The Warriors are also dealing with changes on their team as are so many teams across the league. This is why the pre-season is so very important.

The opening quarter went to the Warriors who led after the first 12 minutes of play 34-30. The second quarter was also a close one with the Kings leading by as much as four points in a half with constant lead changes and ties. At the half the Kings had a slim lead 58-55.

De’Aaron Fox and DeRozan had the highs in the first half with each player shooting for 14 points. Domantas Sabonis had a double double with ten points and ten rebounds. Keegan Murray finished the half with 12 points. It was a solid start for the Sacramento starters in their second pre-season game.

Sacramento’s Keon Ellis found his stride in the third quarter and joined the rest of the starters shooting double digits. With 3:54 left in the quarter the Kings had taken a 82-70 lead. The Kings only had eight turnovers through almost three quarters while the Warriors were struggling with 18 turnovers.

Both teams were shooting at 42% but the Kings were protecting the ball at a much higher level. With one minute left in the third quarter, the Kings 12 point lead had been cut in half and when the clock ran out on the quarter Sacramento was hanging onto a 3 point lead 84-81.

While fans love winning whether it be pre-season or regular season, the purpose of the pre-season is not about winning; it is about getting teams rosters set up and their players ready for the regular season honing their skills and playing as a unit.

Sacramento pushed their lead back out in the fourth quarter. At 8:29 in the quarter, the Kings had taken a 91-83 lead. The Kings starters had taken the bench and their bench players entered the game. Alex Len had four rebounds as he prepares to back up Domantas Sabonis in the absence of Orlando Robinson but had failed to score at all in the game.

The Warriors pulled to within three points but once again Sacramento pushed the lead back out to 99-91. The Warriors pushed back and it was a battle between the two benches. With 2:24 left in the game it was all tied up at 102.

With under a minute left in the game it was a one point game 107-106 in favor of Golden State. The Warriors would prevail 109-106 in the second of these two pre-season games between the two Northern California rivals.

Fox had the high for the Kings with 19 points in 26 minutes of play. Boogie Ellis had 11 points, the high off the bench. He played for ten minutes. The Kings finished the game with 13 turnovers.

Game notes: The 2024-25 NBA regular season is right around the corner as the pre-season has already gotten underway. Teams are making decisions right now as to what they want their starting rosters to look like and working players new to the team into their rotations. The Kings lost to the Warriors Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center and Friday night the Kings lost another one to the Warriors at Golden State, this time at Chase Center.

Sunday afternoon, the Kings will be back at Golden 1 Center to take on the Portland Trail Blazers looking for their first pre-season win. Tipoff for this game is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

MLB Post Season podcast with Stephen Ruderman: Guardians escape elimination with game 4 win; Yanks-Royals benches empty as NY advances

On the MLB Post Season podcast with Stephen Ruderman:

#1 The Cleveland Guardians just escaped elimination and forced a fifth and deciding playoff game with the Detroit Tigers with a 6-5 win in game 4 on Thursday.

#2 The Guardians David Fry hit a two run go ahead home run in the seventh inning Comerica Park in Detroit.

#3 In the top of the ninth inning with the score 4-3 Guardians Fry got an RBI bunt that scored an insurance run making it 5-3. The Tigers would score a run in the bottom of the ninth but fall a run short in a 5-4 final. The series now tied at 2-2.

#4 Jazz Chisholm the New York Yankees third baseman said that the Kansas City Royals were lucky to have won game 2 on Monday night to tie up the ALDS at 1-1. The remark spilled over into game four with the Yankees leading the series 2-1. Royals fans were riding Chisholm and on a double play the Yankees Anthony Volpe put a hard tag on the Royals Maikel Garcia to complete a double play in the sixth inning. Garcia took exception to hard tag and jawed with Volpe no punches were thrown benches emptied and no further action was taken by either club.

#5 The Yankees took three out of five from the Royals to advance to the next round. It was a bitter series for both teams and Chisholm just added to it saying the Royals were lucky to have won game 2.

Cal Bears podcast with Morris Phillips: Cal faces another undefeated team Pitt (5-0) Saturday at Acrisure Stadium

#1 Morris, the Miami Hurricane (6-0) rallied from 25 points down to edge the Cal Bears (3-2) last Saturday night 39-38 that took some doing by the Hurricanes to have to score three unanswered touchdowns in that fashion.

#2 Morris taking a look at Miami’s scoring at 10:28 left in the game the Hurricanes Isaiah Horton scored on an 18 yard pass from quarterback Cam Ward to make it 38-25. The Hurricanes scored once again at 4:04 when Ward carried for a 24 yard rush to cut Cal’s lead down to six 38-32.

#3 The Hurricanes scored the winning touchdown with 26 seconds left when Ward hit wide out Elijah Arroyo for five yards for the 39-38 win. Miami stays perfect at 6-0. How true is it that good teams can rally late and win.

#4 Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza was 11-22 for 285 yards for two touchdowns and one interception. For Mendoza was it a matter of not getting enough protection or Mendoza just didn’t the completions and conversions he needed to create some offense in that fourth quarter.

#5 Cal tries to get back in the win column once again this time at Pitt where the Panthers are another team that comes in undefeated at 5-0. The Panthers won their last game against the North Carolina Tar Heels 34-24. The Panthers quarterback Eli Holstein can do it all throwing 381 yards for three touchdowns. Do you see Cal having a busy day trying to keep the Panthers offense down to a low roar?

The Future Is Teal: San Jose Kicks Off 2024-25 season with a loss in overtime to Blues

Hockey is back in the Bay Area. The Sharks kicked off a journey of big dreams.

SAN JOSE, CA – One of the most anticipated nights in franchise history finally arrived, the 2024-25 campaign kicked off, and with that, the awakening of many dreams.

People showed up tonight after an almost sellout crowd of 17,435 people in attendance. It made a statement of what people wanted to see Thursday night, and that night was Macklin Celebrini who was selected 1st overall in the 2024 draft last summer.

The crowd made themselves be heard, and it was a revelation of what used to be in past years at Shark Tank, a place where several figures from the world of hockey filled the people of San Jose with happiness and nights of joy, something that seemed to have disappeared since 2019. The San Jose Sharks battled the St Louis Blues in overtime but lost the home opener 5-4.

The Sharks dominated for the most part of the game, scoring in the first and second periods. However, the Blues found ways to bounce back. Justin Faulk scored just seconds before to end the game and secure the first victory for the Sharks, but it had to be taken to overtime.

It was then that Brayden Schenn scored the fifth goal for the Blues and ended San Jose’s dreams of victory.

Despite this, we can rescue the wonderful first and second periods in which we can highlight the dream debut of Macklin Celebrini who, beyond his debut, scored his first point in his promising NHL career.

Macklin’s defiant action created a kind of aura for the Sharks, who, with great inspiration, scored a four-goal goal, encouraging the eagerness of the public, who felt the joy that had disappeared a long time ago.

Another important factor was the goaltending, adding 29 saves and taking the ovation and confidence of the team, even though in the third period the goals came for St Louis, Mackenzie Blackwood made a good performance.

Statistically speaking, the visiting team was expected to win, but the way the San Jose team would fight was not expected.

Now, the challenge for San Jose is to avoid in every possible way starting the season in the same way the team started the past seasons with losing records.

This Saturday, the action returns to San Jose, and together with them, the Sharks will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Night, in which there is much celebration and recognition of the Hispanic culture of the area. The Sharks will host Anaheim Saturday night at 7:00pm PT before embarking on a series of road games.

49ers Falter in Third Quarter But Finish Strong In Fourth Quarter Beat Seattle 36-24

The San Francisco 49ers (3-3) took on the Seattle Seahawks (3-3) Thursday night winning 36-24 to even their season record at 3-3. The Niners had erased the memory of their loss to the Cardinals last Sunday and now they will have ten days to get ready for the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Brock Purdy finished the game with 255 passing yards and three touchdowns. George Kittle was the recipient of two touchdown passes and Isaac Guerendo finished with 99 rushing yards. This was a great bounce back game for the 49ers.

Game recap: Neither team made much headway in the first quarter. In the closing minutes of the opening quarter, San Francisco was able to break through kicking a field goal, a Matthew Wright 25 yard kick for a 3-0 lead.

The 49ers found their stride in the second quarter scoring three times . Deebo Samuel opened the quarter with a huge catch a 76 yard bomb from Brock Purdy for the touchdown and San Francisco had a 10-0 lead.

The 49ers would tack on two more field goals before the half. 49er kicker Wright added 3 more points with his second field goal of the game, a 41 yarder. He would kick a third field goal to end the first half this one a 35 yard attempt that was good and San Francisco had a 16-0 lead.

As time ran out on the half, Seattle’s kicker Jason Myers put the Seahawks up on the board with a 20 yard field goal. The score was 16-3 after two quarters. San Francisco had taken control of the game in the second quarter and would be looking to maintain their momentum through the second half.

The 49ers extended their lead in the third quarter when Purdy connected with George Kittle for ten yards and the touchdown. San Francisco had built a 23-3 lead. The 49ers then stumbled through the rest of the quarter.

At 9:54 the Seahawks Laviska Shenault returned a kick-off for 97 yards and the touchdown. As the third quarter wound down, the Seahawks Kenneth Walker rushed for a single yard and their second touchdown of the quarter and Seattle had fought their way back into the game trailing 23-17.

Kittle put the Seattle comeback to an end at 6:20 in the fourth quarter scoring his second touchdown of the game, a nine yard pass from Purdy. San Francisco had a 29-17 lead and although the Seahawks threatened at times in the final quarter a Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith interception pretty much put this game on ice.

With 1:44 left in the game the Seahawks Tyler Lockett caught a nine yard Smith pass but it was too little too late with the 49ers hanging onto a 29-24 lead. San Francisco capped it off with 1:17 left on the clock and a Kyle Juszczyk six yard romp into the end zone; the 49ers wrapped this game up 36-24. This was San Francisco’s first road win of the season.

This game began to slip away in the third quarter but San Francisco stubbornly hung in the game and finished this game off in the fourth quarter. Purdy had a solid game throwing for 255 yards and three touchdowns with no picks.

Kittle finished this game with two touchdowns and San Francisco closed this game out unlike the Rams and Arizona games. They hope to take this energy back to the Bay Area where they will face the Kansas City Chiefs a week from this Sunday at Levis.

Game notes: Thursday Night Football the 49ers played the Seahawks on Prime at Lumen Field. It was a short week for both teams. The 49ers lost Sunday to the Phoenix Cardinals and Seattle also lost this past weekend to the New York Giants. San Francisco had a 23-10 lead at the half only to drop the game in the second half losing 24-23. The Seahawks were tied with the Giants at the half losing the game 29-20. It was a rough second half for both teams on Sunday.

Kickoff for the October 20th matchup with Kansas City is scheduled for 1:25 PM. San Francisco will have ten days off to not only get ready to face the Chiefs but for some of the players to continue to heal. Jordan Mason injured his left shoulder in the second quarter of this game and was forced to leave the field.

Mason attempted to return in the second half but had to exit again due to a lot of discomfort. The ten-day layoff will be exactly what Mason will need to prepare for Kansas City, to heal and hopefully be ready for the Chiefs.

#1 Four playoff games on Thursday Jerry let’s review taking on the first one the Cleveland Guardians are down 1-2 after struggling against the Detroit Tigers. The Guardians were shutout by another excellent exhibition of pitching by Tiger starter Keider Montero who went one inning it was his reliever Brant Hurter who pitched 3.1 innings allowing five hits after Hurter and four Tiger relievers finished off the job shutting out the Guardians for the 3-0 win.

#2 The New York Mets knocked out the Philadelphia Phillies three games out of four in the NLDS. The Mets on Thursday down 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth put together a four run rally and won it in a three run 4-2 decision. The Mets got some quality pitching from starter Jose Quintana who went five innings, two hits and two walks. The Phillies lone run was unearned. The Mets now advance to the next round.

#3 The New York Yankees improved their position in the ALDS with a one run win over the Kansas City Royals two games to one. The Yanks pulled out a 3-2 win in game three at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City on Thursday night. Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth the Yankees just skimmed by Royals pitcher Kris Bubic scratching out a run which gave the Yankees one more win away to advance to the next round.

#4 It wasn’t even a contest on Thursday night at Petco Park in San Diego as the Los Angeles Dodgers racked up the runs against the San Diego Padres 8-0 to tie up the series 2-2. The Dodgers avoided elimination going into the series down 1-2. The bats came out for Los Angeles who scored most of their runs early with two runs in each of the second and third innings and three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Warriors Showcase depth and Versatility in Preseason Victory Over Kings 122-112

SACRAMENTO–The Golden State Warriors are off to an impressive start in their preseason, offering a glimpse of what could be a thrilling regular season ahead. Wednesday night they slipped past the Sacramento Kings with a 122-112 win in the state capital.

The Warriors rolled out a fresh starting lineup featuring Stephen Curry, Brandin Podziemski, Jonathan Kuminga, Draymond Green, and Kevon Looney.

Although Andrew Wiggins remained sidelined, the Warriors faced a strong challenge from the Sacramento Kings, with DeMar DeRozan putting up a perfect shooting performance, scoring 15 points without a miss. Early struggles in both offense and defense had the Warriors on their heels.

Things started to turn around once the Warriors went to their bench, closing the first quarter with a 31-27 lead. The second quarter saw them find their rhythm from beyond the arc, as Curry took charge and even Green knocked down a pair of threes.

Buddy Hield also heated up, hitting all four of his three-point attempts in the first half. Despite their efforts, the Kings held a narrow 68-66 lead at the break.

The second half brought more energy, with Curry, Green, and Looney resting while Hield, Kuminga, Podziemski, Moses Moody, and Trayce Jackson-Davis picked up the pace. Their collective effort helped the Warriors build a seven-point lead, thanks to a flurry of three-pointers, ending the third quarter up 100-91.

Though the Kings’ bench made a final push in the fourth, narrowing the lead to 109-106, a well-timed timeout by coach Steve Kerr sparked a 13-0 Warriors run that secured the win and preserved their unbeaten preseason record.

Hield was a standout with 22 points, hitting six of seven from deep. De’Anthony Melton impressed with 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists, shooting 4-of-9 from three-point range. Kuminga matched Melton’s 16 points, shooting efficiently at 6-of-11 overall and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Curry chipped in 13 points, while Green contributed 10 points and five assists. Podziemski had an all-around performance with eight points, four rebounds, eight assists, and two steals, while Jackson-Davis recorded a +22 rating with eight points and six rebounds.

As the Warriors continue to build momentum, their depth and versatility are beginning to shine, making them a team to watch as the regular season approaches.

#1 The Stanford Cardinal (2-3) got demolished last Saturday by visiting Virginia Tech (2-3) 31-7 at Stanford Stadium. The Hokies quarterback Kyron Drones was unstoppable throwing for three touchdowns and 201 yards passing.

#2 It was a great recovery for Virginia Tech rebounded from their previous week’s loss to Miami Florida. The Hokies got good protection from the Stanford pass rush which left to be almost non existent.

#3 Hokies running back Bhaysul Tuten rushed for 73 yards and a touchdown. Tuten was a transfer from North Carolina AT&T and now has more than 3,000 yards rushing career.

#4 Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels did not play last Saturday due to a ankle injury he sustained against the Clemson Tigers the previous week. Back up quarterback Justin Lamson completed 13 of 24 passes for 103 yards and was intercepted once.

#5 The Cardinal are back to the drawing board again this time at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are rolling they are 4-1 and won their last contest last Sat Sep 28th against Louisville Cardinals 31-28. Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard threw 17-23 for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Michael will Stanford have their hands full this Saturday?
