Giants re-sign Derek Holland to 1-year, $7 million deal

Left-handed pitcher Derek Holland was pulled out of the free agent market Monday morning. The San Francisco Giants re-signed Holland to a 1-year, $7 million deal. So Holland will be guaranteed $7 million this coming season and will earn at least $6.5 million next season if the Giants pick up the option with incentives that could make it a $15.5 million deal over two years. The news was first reported by The Athletic.

Sure, Holland reportedly told MLB Network Radio earlier this month that the Cincinnati Reds contacted him, but he never confirmed any plans with his hometown team. Holland is a Newark, Ohio native whose nickname is “Dutch Oven.” Holland was selected 25th overall in 2006 out of Wallace State Community College in Huntsville, Alabama.  Holland spent seven years in Arlington, Texas before spending brief, 1-year stints with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.

The Giants’ decision to re-sign Holland was an excellent one. Holland deserves a pay raise considering the fact that he arrived in San Francisco, Calif. last year as a non-roster invitee. Holland made $2 million last year, which was minimal compared to the contracts of other players in the MLB, but he ended up becoming one of the Giants’ most valuable players. Holland led the pitching rotation by tossing 171 1/3 innings and posting a 3.57 ERA with 169 strikeouts. Holland served as a starter for the most part. At times, Holland moved to the Giants bullpen, but he was able to achieve success there, too.

The Giants are reportedly expected to add more starters in an attempt to add more depth that Dereck Rodriguez and Andrew Suarez can start the 2019 MLB season in the minors and/or bullpen. Moreover, Holland was a great step that filled some of the Giants’ pitching needs.

Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris and Michael: Cal Bears has now lost 11 straight conference games and are 0-4 in the Pac-12 this season

On the Cal Bears basketball podcast with Morris and Michael:

The Cal Bears have not had a winning Pac-12 conference game this season. Now at 0-4 and the attendance at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley has been low with all the screaming Arizona Wildcats fans in attendance last Saturday. Also how Cal played on the hardwood in their 87-65 loss.

The one good thing is Cal plays Washington State next at Pullman on Tuesday night. Pullman is a tough place to get to and a tough place to get a win. Even when WSU is not playing well, they defend their home floor pretty well. This is not going to be a cake walk for Cal.

Curry leads the Warriors to a 119-114 win over the Mavericks in Dallas

by Jerry Feitelberg

The Warriors played another close game with the Dallas Mavericks Sunday evening in Dallas. It was the third game of the season between the two teams, and it was a thriller. The teams had split the two previous meetings, and this was the final meeting of the regular season. The Mavericks are an improved team with the addition of former LA Clipper DeAndre Jordan and the nineteen-year-old sensation Luca Doncic. The Warriors lost to the Mavericks in Dallas earlier in the season when they did not have Steph Curry and Draymond Green available. The Warriors gained a measure of revenge as they defeated the Mavericks 119-114 in a game that was determined in the final seconds of play.

The Warriors got off to a good start in the first quarter and grabbed an early 16-10 lead. Curry and Kevin Durant scored all the Warrior points up to that point in the game. The Warriors had opportunities to score but could not cash in. The Mavs were able to go on a 12-0 run to go ahead 22-16. The Mavs finished the quarter leading 29-25.

The Warriors won the second quarter37-25 to finish the first half with a 62-54 advantage. Steph Curry was on fire as he tallied 24 points and connected on five threes in 8 attempts. Durant added 17. Klay Thompson was held to 4 points. Luca Doncic led the Mavs with 12. Jordan had 6, Wesley Matthews 8, former Stanford star Dwight Powell had 8, and Jalen Brunson finished the half with 8.

Dallas controlled the boards in the first quarter, but things changed when Steve Kerr inserted Jonas Jerebko and Alonzo McKinnie into the game in the second quarter. Both players help the Dubs get rebounds at both ends of the court, and they were a big help in getting the Warriors back into the lead.

The Warriors offense got some help from Klay Thompson. Alonzo McKinnie, Andre Iguodala, and Steph Curry. They held Dallas to 40% from the floor, but Dallas spent a lot more time at the free throw line. They were 10 for 11 from the charity stripe while the Dubs had but two free throws in the period. The Warriors finished the period leading 92-88

As the fans of the NBA know, most games are decided in the fourth quarter. The game between these two teams was no exception. The Warriors were clinging to a scant four-point advantage as they started the fourth and final stanza. Dallas kept creeping closer. However, Curry and Thompson connected on three-point shots to keep the Warriors ahead. Dallas tied the game at 103. They went up by five 110-105 with 4:25 left to play. It was still anyone’s game. Steph hit a three, and the Warriors now trailed 110-108. Former Warrior Harrison Barnes was fouled by Draymond Green while attempting a three-point shot. Green was also charged with a flagrant foul. Barnes made all three free throws and Dallas retained possession. The Warriors caught a break when Andre Iguodala managed to steal the ball. Durant followed with a bucket to make it 113-110. Klay followed with a basket. The score was 113-112 with 2:21 left. Dallas made a free throw to go up 114-112. They would not score again. Curry tied it a 114. He then hit a three to put the Warriors in the lead 117-114 with 42.2 seconds left to play. Dallas had the ball and needed a three to tie the game in regulation. Harrison Barnes, with 5.6 seconds left on the clock, fumbled the ball and lost it out of bounds. The Mavs fouled Steph, and he made both free throws to ice the win for Golden State. Final score 119-114.

Game notes and stas\ts. The Warriors, with the win, improved to 29-14. The Mavericks, who were 16-4 at home before the game, drop to 20-23 overall and 16-5 at home.

Curry had a tremendous performance with 48 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Curry made 11 threes in 19 attempts. He had 13 points in the fourth quarter. Durant had 28, 7 board, and 5 assists. He was a force on both ends of the court. Klay Thompson finished with 16. Klay had 9 points in the fourth quarter that helped the Dubs to the win. McKinnie finished with 10.

The Macs were led by Luca Doncic. He knocked down 26 points and had 6 rebounds and 5 assists. He also made 5 threes. Harrison Barnes had 22, Jordan 13 points and 14 boards, and Brunson had 12.

The Warriors shot 46% from the floor and held the Mavs to 41.8% The Warriors made nineteen three and the Mavs connected 16 times. The Mavs had 17 more free throws than the Warriors They had 29 compared to 12 for Golden State. The Maves outrebounded the Dubs 51-49, but the Warriors had 9 steals and 8 blocked shots.

The Warriors are 8-1 on the road since December 3rd. They travel to Denver to face the Nuggets Tuesday night. Game time is at 6pm.

Barracuda hold on for a 2-1 victory over Heat

By: Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Barracuda were able to get back to their winning ways against their NorCal rival the Stockton Heat as they scored two unanswered goals and were able to hold on for a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at SAP Center.

San Jose (22-8-1-3) controlled the tempo in the first period as they doubled up the shots on Stockton (16-18-3-0) 10-5. However, both goalies, Antoine Bibeau (9-5-3) for the Cuda and Jon Gillies (5-11-3) held their ground and kept the game scoreless for the first 19 minutes of the opening frame.

The Cuda would break through 11 seconds before time expired as Antti Suomela deked out Gillies going backhand-to-forehand and beat the Heat goaltender top-shelf for his second goal of the season at the 19:49 mark. Dylan Gambrell and Manny Weiderer received assists.

In the second period, once again, the story would be the goaltending that stole the show. Stockton put on more of a push, but Bibeau was able to stop all 11 shots from the Heat attack. Despite good scoring chances from San Jose, Gillies equaled his counterpart,  stopping all 10 Cuda shots in the middle frame.

In the third period, San Jose doubled their lead on the power play. Alex True fed a pass over to Kyle Wood at the point and Wood fired a wrist shot past a screened Gillies, who never saw the puck go into the back of the net for his third goal of the season at the 9:49 mark. Francis Perron received the secondary assist.

Stockton cut the lead in half when Buddy Robinson cleaned up a rebound off a Kerby Rychel shot that Bibeau made a toe save on. Robinson’s sixth goal of the season came at the 11:34 mark.

Stockton pulled Gillies late in the game for an extra attacker, but weren’t able to get that equalizer as Bibeau and the Cuda held off their late push.

Bibeau finished with 22 saves on 23 shots to earn his ninth victory of the season. Gillies made 31 saves on 33 shots in suffering the defeat.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 1/2 on the power play. Stockton was 1/3.

With the win San Jose improved to 12-4-0-1 at SAP Center and have the best mark in the Pacific Division.

The announced attendance was 5,740.

UP NEXT: The Barracuda return to action on Friday 1/18 as they host the Texas Stars at 7:00 pm at SAP Center.

Home Not Hospitable: Cal’s struggles at Haas continue in 87-65 loss to Arizona

By Morris Phillips

BERKELEY, Calif. — Hard to believe, but the Arizona Wildcats went more than eight minutes without scoring a field goal on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

Didn’t matter much, the Cats led 14-10 when the drought started, and they still led 22-17 when it ended.

The statistical oddity said a lot more about the lackluster hosts than it said about Arizona.

Cal saw its shooting grow colder than the visitors in their 87-65 loss to Arizona that kept the Bears (5-11, 0-4) winless in the Pac-12. The 11th consecutive loss in conference play for the Bears left few positives. In fact, after Cal shot a miserable 34.5 percent for the game, coach Wyking Jones had little to say about his team’s offense.

That’s because Jones was so preoccupied with his team’s dismal defense that allowed 87 points despite Arizona’s drought, the Bears’ offense got a pass.

“We have to improve our sense of urgency on the defensive end,” said Jones. “It’s a major, major problem for us right now. We’re an athletic team. We’re a quick team. We’re undersized, so we shouldn’t be getting taken off the bounce the way we’re getting taken off the bounce or opening up the floor for guys to kick out to wide-open shooters.”

The 12th double-digit home loss in Wyking Jones’ 48 games as head coach was a definite low point right down to the smaller Arizona contingent of fans making more noise than Cal’s supporters. But fortunately for Cal, the schedule eases with a game at similarly challenged Washington State up next, a chance to break the losing skid.

But the Bears need significant improvement if they envision hanging with the Cougars in Pullman.

Justice Sueing paced Cal with 27 points, but he was the only Bear to score in double figures. Cal’s other four starters combined to miss 29 of their 38 shots. Connor Vanover started at center and missed all six of his shot attempts inside the arc. Vanover’s only makes? A pair of 3-pointers, and an inadvertent tip-in at the buzzer before halftime–for Arizona as the 7’3″ center attempted to secure the defensive rebound off Brandon Williams’ miss.

That basket was credited to Arizona’s Chase Jeter, who led the Cats with 23 points, nine rebounds, and was part of a huge run that took Arizona from up five at the end of their first half drought to 12 at halftime, and 26 with 5:48 remaining.

At one juncture, Arizona scored at least one point on 21 of 23 possessions. How could Cal’s defense be so porous?

“Effort is the biggest thing. We keep going back to the fact that we’re young but we’re a lot more than what we’re showing, and we all know that,” Sueing said. “It’s disappointing to see us work so hard, especially with shooting and defense being the emphasis in practice.”

Arizona (13-4, 4-0) isn’t the only Pac-12 team that’s undefeated in conference play, and Cal not the only team looking for it’s first win, but the two are first and last in the standings. Arizona has won six straight overall, and holds a half-game lead over Washington and UCLA, both at 3-0.

The Bears are 0-4, a half-game behind 0-3 Washington State. The two teams see each other on Thursday at 7 pm in Pullman, WA.

Sharks’ Win Streak at 6, Beat Senators 4-1

By Mary Walsh

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks extended their win streak to six games with a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators Saturday. The game was scoreless through almost two periods, but starting with a goal at the end of the second, the Sharks found their scoring touch. Sharks goals came from Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns, Joe Thornton and Melker Karlsson. Martin Jones made 27 saves in the win. Ryan Dzingle scored the lone goal for Ottawa, while goalie Anders Nilsson made 28 saves.

Sharks defenseman Justin Braun was back in the lineup after missing a few games due to injury. With Radim Simek also back recently, only Marc-Edouard Vlasic is still out from the Sharks’ blue line. Early in the first period Saturday, though, forward Joonas Donskoi was injured. Donskoi did not return after a collision with Mark Borowiecki. After the game, their was little news about the injury apart from the fact that it was an upper body one.

All these lineup adjustments have not slowed the Sharks down as they made their way through this winning streak. After the game, Sharks captain Joe Pavelski credited the team’s structure for their resilience: “We’ve got a good structure. I think the group understands what we’re trying to do. Guys are able to slot in, just playing hard, doing things the right way. You need that, for a stretch like this right now, against some good teams.”

The game was scoreless for most of two periods Saturday. The Sharks took and killed two tripping penalties in the first two periods but that was it for the score sheet until late in the second.

The Sharks scored the first goal with just over two minutes left in the second period. Joe Pavelski caught a pass a little awkwardly as he skated into the zone. As soon as he had the puck settled, he took the shot and beat Anders Nilsson with a shot to the top corner. Assists went to Tomas Hertl and Brenden Dillon.

The Sharks scored again at 6:17 of the third period. Brent Burns took a shot from the boards and it went off of Nilsson and then Christian Jaros and in. Kevin Labanc and Justin Braun got assists on the goal.

The Senators got one back 21 seconds later from Ryan Dzingle. The Senators intercepted a clearing attempt by the Sharks and Bobby Ryan found Dzingle on his way across the slot. His shot got past Jones’s glove and went in. Assists went to Bobby Ryan and Zach Smith.

The Sharks had another penalty to kill at 9:44 of the third. Joe Pavelski was called for slashing Chris Tierney after Pavelski’s stick got tangled up in Tierney’s legs. Painful as the result was for Tierney, it did look closer to another trip than a slash.

The Sharks got their first power play at 13:26 of the third, a holding penalty to Jaros. The Sharks did not score on the power play but they did score just after it expired. A blue line shot from Timo Meier hit an Ottawa defender and then went under Nilsson’s pad and in. Joe Thornton helped the puck make its way in for his ninth goal of the season. Assists went to Timo Meier and Brent Burns.

Melker Karlsson added an empty-net goal at 18:39.

The shot count was close throughout the game, and in the end the Sharks held a small edge at 32-28. In the face off circle, the Sharks prevailed 65% of the time.

The Sharks will next play on Tuesday against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins at 7:00 PM PT.
