SAN JOSE, Calif—The San Jose Barracuda scored three unanswered goals and then held on to defeat the San Diego Gulls 4-2 on Tuesday evening at Solar4America Ice At San Jose.

San Jose has won three out of their last five games, including two out of three from San Diego. The Gulls have lost four of their past six games.

The ‘Cuda (5-3-2-0) drew first blood in the first 11 seconds of the game.

Christian Jaros fed a pass over to Noah Gregor at the blueline. Gregor made a deke past a Gulls’ defender into the middle of the ice and snapped home a hard wrist shot past Gulls’ goalie Lukas Dostal for his first goal of the season.

San Jose out shot San Diego 10-7 after the opening 20 minutes.

The Barracuda extended its lead with two goals in a two-minute span to begin the second period. Gregor skated in from the right wing before centering a pass back up to Fredrik Handemark and buried a wrist shot far side past Dostal for his third goal of the season at the 2:28 mark. It was also Gregor’s first assist of the season.

San Jose made it 3-0 when a San Diego turnover in the neutral zone proved costly to the visiting team. Handemark brought the puck into the Gulls zone and gave it up to Evan Weinger with a rink wide pass. Weinger found Jayden Halbgewachs down low where he slid a backhander past Dostal for his fourth goal of the season at the 4:41 mark.

San Diego (9-6-0-0) got on the scoreboard with under a minute left in the middle frame on the power play. Sam Carrick sent a cross ice pass over to Kodie Curran who blasted a one-timer top-shelf past Cuda

On the Sharks podcast with Len:

#1 Len, after losing three straight games the San Jose Sharks (9-11-3) looked like they tightened down the defense despite getting behind early 2-0 on Monday night against the St Louis Blues (14-8-2).

#2 The defense played a big enough role for San Jose that allowed them to tie the score at 2-2 in the second and third periods with a goal a piece from Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

#3 The Sharks in their last few games have been getting goal scoring help from their defencemen and Vlasic’s goal on Monday night no exception.

#4 Evander Kane can come out and get one in the back of the net and he didn’t waste anytime on Monday night 41 seconds in the overtime and scored the game winner.

#5 The Sharks open up back to back games in Anaheim this Friday and Saturday. The Anaheim Ducks (7-12-6) have lost five of their last six games this is a team that has been struggling will this give the Sharks an opportunity to take advantage of the Ducks?

for his third goal of the season at the 19:16 mark.

The Gulls made the ‘Cuda pay once again for it’s fifth trip to the sinbin. Andrew Poturalski sent a shot-pass to a wide open Sam Carrick who tapped home the puck right in front of the crease for his fifth goal of the season at the 16:36 mark.

Jaycob Megna scored an empty netter from his own defensive zone with 30 seconds left to ice the game.

Melnichuk stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced to earn his second victory of the season. Dostal made 21 saves on 24 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-4 on the power play. San Diego went 2-for-5.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Gregor 2) Handemark 3) Alex Dostie

UP NEXT: The Barracuda travel back down to Bakersfield to take on the Condors on Friday 3/12 at 6:00pm at Mechanics Bank Arena.

Sharks End Homestand on High Note, Beat the Blues 3-2 in Overtime

The thrill of victory as the San Jose Sharks Evander Kane (9) scores the game winning goal in overtime and is congratulated by teammates Erik Karlsson (center) and Logan Couture (39) at SAP Center in San Jose on Mon Mar 8, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Matthew Harrington

The San Jose Sharks rallied from a 2-1 deficit entering the third period to beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in overtime Monday night. Evander Kane scored the game-winner 41 seconds into extra time after Devan Dubnyk’s aggressive work in net, Logan Couture scored the game-tying goal and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored his first of the year in the win. Ryan Donato assisted on both goals for the Sharks (9-11-3) who wrapped up a 7-game homestand going 2-4-1. Brayden Schenn and Niko Mikkola scored for the Blues (14-8-4).

O’Reilly had the game on his stick, but Dubnyk challenged him before he could even put the puck on net in overtime. Erik Karlsson was able to pick up the loose puck and race down the right wing before feeding Kane on the left wing crossing into the Blues zone. From there, Kane had a clear lane to the net before, sniping the puck past Ville Husso for his ninth goal of the year.

San Jose tied the game 7:58 into the third on the power play after Rudolfs Balcers worked the puck to Ryan Donato in the corner. Donato worked his way into the net-front, trying to backhand the puck past Husso. The rebound bounced to Couture, who managed to have it flick off the boot of his skate and into the net for his division-leading 13th goal of the year.

“I thought we competed harder in that third,” said Couture. ” The first two periods we weren’t getting offense going. We had 10 or 11 shots after the second. We earned some power plays, were able to get a power play goal and then that big goal by (Evander Kane) in overtime.”

San Jose was trailing entering the period after a pair of seeing-eye goals by St. Louis sandwiched around Vlasic’s marker. Niko Mikkola scored his first career NHL goal after his shot deflected into the net off a skater in Dubnyk’s line of sight 4:16 into the game.

Vlasic converted on a Donato feed exactly seven minutes into the second, his first goal since December of 2019. Then Schenn gave the Blues a 2-1 edge on the power play after David Perron’s shot knicked him crossing the goal mouth.

“We thought that in the first period we fought pretty hard,” said Sharks coach Bob Boughner. “We thought we were maybe a little ahead on the chances. We felt good. In the second, we were building some momentum with two or three shifts in a row then we just took penalty after penalty and it ruined our flow.”

The Sharks ran into penalty trouble throughout the night, with Kevin Labanc picking up two of the four minors for the Sharks. He found himself slipping further and further down the lineup, ultimately sitting out the entirety of the third period and overtime.

“I think the message was sent with me sitting him for the period,” said Boughner. “I talked to him earlier in the game about working away from the puck. I showed him a couple clips on the bench on the ipad.

He just wasn’t engaged enough. I didn’t believe that he could help us tonight with what I saw. Someone else is going to get that opportunity. We have to have that kind of accountability in our game. For me that starts with ice time.”

While Labanc didn’t have an impact in the final 21 minutes of play, Dubnyk stood tall in net for the Sharks. He saved 24 of 26 St. Louis shots along with snuffing out the last Blues rush that arguably should have earned him an assist on the game-winning goal.

His performance sets up an intriguing match-up question when the Sharks start a four-game road trip Friday night in Anaheim. The Sharks will play back-to-back games against the Ducks, then face Vegas in the desert on Monday and Wednesday.

Both goalies will probably split the first two games, but questions remain if Boughner will split the remaining games against Vegas or give both to whoever is hot.

Notes: Tomas Hertl is expected to resume skating on Tuesday, he could be available to return after missing the last six games due to Covid-19…Timo Meier’s status is less clear. He sat out Monday’s game, his second straight scratch with an injury….Kurtis Gabriel was spotted jawing with St. Louis tough guy Kyle Clifford in warm-ups. The two dropped gloves in the first period. Gabriel now leads the team with two fighting majors…Coach Bob Boughner celebrated his 50th birthday Monday night with a nice gift from the team, two points…John Leonard found himself on the top line with Labanc’s demotions and didn’t look entirely out of place, playing with more confidence with the puck.

Headline Sports podcast with Barbara Mason: Embiid and Simmons barber had Covid-19 leading to removal from All Star Game; Kings and Warriors reviews

Joe Embiid (21) and Ben Simmons (25) of the Philadelphia 76ers both were removed from playing in the NBA All Star Game due to Covid-19 protocol issues on Sun Mar 7, 2021 in Atlanta (@sixers)

On Headline Sports with Barbara:

#1 The Philadelphia 76ers (24-12) Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons received haircuts from a barber who had tested positive for Covid-19 and the NBA announced that both players were not going to play in last night’s All Star game in Atlanta.

#2 Barbara, the Sacramento Kings (14-22) have been playing .500 ball in their last four games. The Kings lost their last game to the Portland Trailblazers (21-14) 123-119 on Thursday night. The Kings previous game to that one was a shocker as they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers (24-13) 123-120 also memorable because LeBron did not play.

#3 The Kings although they lost to Portland on Thursday looks to have improved over the last two games with the win over the Lakers and the close contest against the Trailblazers.

#4 The Golden State Warriors (19-18) just below the playoff line in ninth place in the Western Conference the Warriors after winning six of seven went on a three game losing streak losing most recently to the Phoenix Suns (24-11) 120-98 last Thursday. Jordan Poole scored 26 leading Golden State in scoring.

#5 The Warriors face the fourth place Los Angeles Clippers (24-14) on Thu Mar 11 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Clippers have lost five of their last seven games and in their last game they lost a close one to the Washington Wizards (14-20) 119-117.

That’s Amaury’s News and Commentary: The Experience of Broadcasting during a Pandemic

The Experience of Broadcasting during a Pandemic

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

Here are the memories that were created last season while broadcasting in a pandemic. Many folks have asked what was the experience like, so here it is. During an abbreviated 60-game schedule last year, broadcasters did not travel and most called the games from their home parks.

Some had the luck of having equipment installed by their respective teams at their homes. This set-up allowed them the best commute of all, maybe a total of 20-50 steps to their “home park.” Getting to the Oakland Coliseum to do the games for the Athletics on Spanish radio was nothing new.

I drove like I always do when doing a home game. In the past during certain games when the Giants, Yankees, Red Sox and teams that usually sell-out, create an unusual amount of traffic, I would give my driving a rest and take BART, round-trip to broadcast the game. Because no fans were allowed, the commute coming and going was very “light”.

Arriving at the Coliseum about three hours prior to first pitch (like I always do) the whole parking lot was deserted. About 10,000 empty parking spaces and no tailgate parties. There is nothing like arriving at the Coliseum when everyone has their “tailgate cooker” in full progress.

The smells of smoked meat are just phenomenal. The team and MLB modified the way media entered the Coliseum. There were the standard ten questions or so regarding Covid, taking you temp, and then the normal checking of media work bags and the metal detection gates.

As the season progressed, the thing was the Covid-test would be later and of course during this time, the vaccines were in development…and don’t forget to mask up. Taking the elevator to the broadcast level of the Oakland Coliseum, the protocol was not to allow more than two people at the same time.

The operator was wearing a mask, there was a receptacle with hand sanitizer, (inside the elevator), for everyone to use. The Coliseum and the Oakland A’s did an excellent job. There we many places where big bottles of hand sanitizer were available.

As I got to the broadcast level and the door opened, it was an eerie feeling. The whole place was quieter that most hospitals. The broadcast level usually seats other radio reporters and media writers local and visiting. None of that was allowed.

The only people were us, doing the actual Oakland Athletics broadcasts, radio and television, English and Spanish, engineers, a producer or two and that was it. One or two A’s media staff. Maybe 12 people occupying this whole level, which during a well covered game, could seat dozens.

Also a very small crew on the Coliseum scoreboard, PA announcer and technical people area. This is a busy place during the operations of a regular baseball game in normal times. All the announcers had plenty of separation. Most announcers had their own booth. With the exception of the “cardboard fans”, it was 56,000 empty seats per game.

That is a weird experience. It is something I could never get used to. There was no access to the field to see batting practice or going inside dressing room for interviews. This was all conducted via Zoom at a specific time assigned by the A’s media department.

Technology controlled everything. Once the home plate umpire call of Play Ball! I could hear him (and I mean hear him) like he was next to me, in an empty park you can hear stuff you never heard before. Our production used a crowd noise track during all the games, to recreate the sound of fans.

The PA announcer would call the name of each player coming to the plate, like during regular times; the music will play pre-game and during some parts of the games, and very loud. And the game was the game.

MLB has scheduled to open the season on April 1st.The A’s will open at home against the Astros and then the Dodgers. Most teams are expected to allow fans, maybe 25 percent of capacity and the hope is by the All-Star break (mid July) maybe things will be close to normal times. But for broadcasters, the season will begin just like 2020, no traveling, separation, same safety measures, mask and so on, with the good news of some fans in the stands.

That is progress. I have re-created games that were played thousands of miles away of where I was calling the game, including a couple of Caribbean World Series for FOX sports in English. Those games were called from FOX studios in the LA area while the games were taking place in México and Venezuela.

There was no pandemic or national emergency then, but the ‘powers to be’ producers, chose to do those types of productions because they were more cost effective, and in our business you do what is necessary to survive.

Any major league announcers should be able to re-create the game no matter what the conditions or situations are. If they complain, then they should be sent back to the minors. None of my experiences can compare to the 2020 Season. 2020 is one for the records books. 2020 was like broadcasting in the Twilight Zone.

Stay well and stay tuned.

Team LeBron runs past Team Durant 170-150 at the NBA All-Star game

Team LeBron James captain Lebron James runs the floor against Team Kevin Durant battles at the 2021 NBA All Star Game in Atlanta State Farm Arena Sun Mar 7, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The NBA played its annual All-Star game in Atlanta Sunday night. There was some controversy as several players, including LeBron James, would have preferred the game not to be played this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Two of the players selected, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers, could not play as they were exposed to someone who contracted the disease.

The game’s purpose was to raise money for the HBCUs (Historic Black Colleges and Universities) and The United Negro College Fund. The amount of money won depended on which team won each quarter. LeBron James was captain of Team LeBron and Kevin Durant captain of Team Durant. Durant did not play due to an injury.

Team LeBron won all four quarters to raise 1.25 Million dollars for the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Team Durant $500,000 for the United Negro College Fund.

Team LeBron put five fantastic players on the floor to start the game. The Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James were the forwards. Nikola Jokic was at the center position. The Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry and the Portland Trail Blazers made up the backcourt. Team Durant starters were Zion Williamson, Kawhi Leonard, Jayson Tatum, Bradley Beal, and Kyrie Irving.

Team Lebron squeaked out a 40-39 win in the first quarter.  Curry helped his team win the quarter with 12 points. Curry made four threes.

The two teams played a very competitive second quarter. Team LeBron led 31-30. At this point, Team LeBron went on a 19-2 run to cruise to an easy 60-41 win in the second quarter.

Team Lebron kept running the court and knocking down threes and making spectacular lobs and dunks. Antetokounmpo continued to make baskets to keep his team ahead. Paul George and Jaylen Brown knocked down threes to pace Team LeBron to another win 46-32. Team LeBron led 146-125 after three quarters.

The NBA changed the rules for the fourth quarter. The winner of the game would be the team that reached 170 points irrespective of the clock.  Curry, Damian Lillard, and Antetokounmpo  wanted to end the game as soon as possible.

Curry and Lillard knocked down threes. With the score at 167-150, Curry missed a three that would have won the game. He didn’t get another chance as Lillard hit a three from downtown to win it for Team LeBron.

Game Notes and Stats: Antetokounmpo set an All-Star record as he was 16-for-16 from the floor. He made 13 buckets for 26 points and three threes to finish with 35 for the night. Antetokounmpo was awarded the Kobe Bryant Trophy for the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Danion Lilliard had 32 points. Lillard connected on eight threes. The Warriors’ Curry, who won the three-point shooting contest earlier in the evening, had 28 points. Curry was ten-for 19 from the floor, and he made eight threes.

The Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown finished with 22, and he connected on five from downtown. The Clippers’ Paul George had 17, the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic eight. Rudy Gobert had ten, Nikola Kokic six, Chris Paul six points, and 16 assists. Paul may have either tied the record for assists or broken it. LeBron James played 12 minutes and scored four points.

Team LeBron shot an astounding 63.6% from the floor. They made 31 threes in 61 tries. Team Durant shot 52.6% from the floor. They made 27 three in 72 attempts. There were not a lot of free throws in the game. Each team had five free throws.

Bradley Beal led Team Durant with 26. Kyrie Irving had 24. James Harden and Jayson Tatum each had 21. Donovan Mitchell had 15, Zach LaVine 13, Zion Williamson 10, and Kawhi Leonard 8.

As mentioned earlier,  Curry won the three-point shooting contest. Curry won the contest for the second time. He won the first crown in 2015. The Blazers’ Anfernee Simons won the Slam Dunk Contest.

Golden Knights Shut-Out Sharks 4-0

The San Jose Sharks lost 4-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights Saturday. Goals came from Mark Stone, Alex Tuch (2) and Reilly Smith. Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves for the shut-out win. Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves in the loss for the Sharks.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said that the team lost some energy after the first period: “We were a little bit one-and-done. The Sharks are a team that played five games in the last eight days and you could see that as the game wore on.”

Sharks goaltender Devan Dubnyk said: “I thought offensively we generated a lot. Flower [Vegas goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury] played phenomenal and he’s been pretty good all season.”

Vegas scored their first goal fairly late in the first period, at 15:02. Mark Stone scored it, off of a two on one. Assists went to Chandler Stephenson and Max Pacioretty.

Vegas outshot the Sharks 14-8 in the first period and won 64% of the face-offs.

Alex Tuch scored both second period goals. First, Tuch caught a turnover at speed in the neutral zone and raced away for a shot before anyone could get in his way. It was his 11th of the season.

He scored the second at 16:38. Devan Dubnyk had just knocked the puck away but into some traffic. It bounced clear just as Tuch skated to the net and he knocked it in with a backhand.

The Sharks took one penalty in the first period but gave up no shots to the Vegas power play. Vegas won the face-off battle again at 53%, and had 14 shots to the Sharks’ 9.

The final goal of the game came in middle of the third period. Alex Pietrangelo won a board battle below the goal line, allowing Jonathan Marchessault to send the puck to a waiting Reilly Smith up in the slot. The puck went over Dubnyk’s glove and in the net.

The Sharks led in third period shots 7-4 and won 57% of the face-offs. Each team had a power play in the second period. The Sharks had one shot on their power play and Vegas had none.

The Sharks’ forward roster was reduced by one more for Saturday’s game. Timo Meier was out with a lower body injury and is listed as day-to-day. The Golden Knights’ Mark Stone left during the second period with an injury and did not return. Ryan Reaves, who had to be helped off the ice during Friday’s game with a lower body injury, was back in the lineup Saturday.

The Sharks next play on Monday against the St. Louis Blues at 7:30 PM PT in San Jose.
