LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Henderson Silver Knights received goals from four different scorers and rode the back of their goaltender Logan Thompson in a 4-0 shutout victory over the San Jose Barracuda on Sunday afternoon at Orleans Arena.

Thompson stopped all 38 shots he faced for his first career AHL shutout. Henderson has won eight of their past nine games. San Jose has lost five of its past six games.

Henderson (13-2-0-0) drew first blood in the first five minutes of the first period on the power play. Despite the offensive attack from San Jose in the third period, Thompson kept the ‘Cuda off the scoreboard.

Henderson put the game away with an empty net goal from former San Jose Sharks propect Danny O’Regan at the 18:37 mark of the third period. Quinney received his second assist of the game on O’Regan’s fifth goal of the season.

76ers blow out the Kings 129-105

By Jeremiah Salmonson

The Sacramento Kings were back on the court on Saturday night. After playing on Friday in Boston, the Kings traveled to take on the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night. The Kings weren’t able to math the 76ers and fell 129-105 in regulation.

Flashback Friday: The Sacramento Kings did something they hadn’t done since 2007 on Friday night. That feat was beating the Boston Celtics in Boston. The Kings had a very uncharacteristic win on Friday beating the Celtics 107-96. The Kings defense is what was on display on Friday as they held the Celtics to only 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Saturday night recap:
The Kings were set to take on the 76ers on Saturday at 4:30 PM PST in Philadelphia.

In the first half, the Kings didn’t play particularly great. It was the teams defense that let them down again. The first quarter saw the 76ers outscore the Kings 42-21. It was an embarrassing defensive performance for a team not known much for defense as it is. In the second quarter, the Kings offense picked up the pace, but the defense remained ineffective. The Kings and 76ers both scored 31 points in the second quarter. An improvement on the first quarter for the Kings, but not really enough to close the 20-point gap heading into halftime. The score at half was 73-52 76ers on top.

In the second half, the Kings played better, but didn’t get the effort they needed to perform a comeback. The third quarter saw the 76ers outscore the Kings again 33-28 and saw the lead grow to 26 points. At this point, playing the final quarter was just a formality. The Kings outscored the 76ers in the fourth quarter 25-23, but came up drastically short of mounting a comeback. The Kings ultimately fell 129-105 in the city of brotherly love.

Tobias Harris led the victorious 76ers with 29 points as Buddy Hield led the Kings in defeat with 25 points. It was a tough pill for the Kings to swallow after their improved play of late. The Kings fell to 17-25 as the 76ers improved to 29-14 (Best in the Eastern Conference) on the season.

Up Next: The Kings travel to Cleveland for the final game of their six game road trip to play the Cavaliers at 4:30 PM PST on Monday.

Grizzlies turn the tables on the Warriors, 111-103

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors met the Grizzlies Saturday night at FedEx Forum in Memphis.

The Warriors were hoping to sweep the two-game set to win their third in a row. The Warriors were again without the services of Steph Curry, James Wiseman, and Eric Paschall. To make matters worse, the Warriors announced Kevon Looney would not play as he, too, was exposed to someone with the Covid-19 virus and, by NBA protocol, will not be available for 10 days.

What this meant for the Dubs was they had to play small ball once again. Draymond Green and Juan Toscano-Anderson would have to be the centers. Steve Kerr had Alen Smailagic available, too. Smiley did get into the game, but he played just eight minutes and committed five personal fouls. The Grizzlies Jonas Valanciunas took advantage of the smaller Warrior centers and lead his team with 19 points. The Grizzlies and Warriors played a very competitive game. The defense was the key as the Grizzlies held the Warriors to 34.4% from the floor. The Warriors held Memphis to 37.9%. The Grizzlies had just enough oomph to win 111-103.

The Warriors’ Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins paced the Warrior offense with 26 and 20 points. The Warrior offense did not do well in the first half, even though it finished with a two-point lead, 51-49. They shot 31% from the floor. Memphis was not much better. They shot 37.8%

The Warriors had a chance to win the game. Jordan Poole hit a three to give the Warriors a slim lead, 100-99, with 2:43 to play. The Grizzlies then went on an 8-0 run to lead 107-100 with 50 seconds left. Poole hit another three to make it 107-103. The Grizzlies scored the last four points of the game to win 111-103.

Game Notes and Stats: Steph Curry missed his second game in a row with a contusion on his tailbone. He is still in pain and may not play next Tuesday when the Warriors play the Philadelphia 76ers.

Jordan Poole continued his amazing turnaround Saturday night. The second-year player from Michigan knocked down 26 points to go along with four rebounds and five assists. He was 10-for-21 from the floor and connected on three threes. Andrew Wiggins, who scored 40 points Friday night, kicked in 20 points Saturday. Wiggins pulled down seven rebounds. The other Warriors in double figures were Kelly Oubre, Jr. and Juan Toscano-Anderson. Kelly, playing with a sore ankle, had 12 points and six boards. Toscano-Anderson had 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists. He made three threes in five tries. Draymond Green finished with seven points, eight rebounds, and three assists. The Warriors had eight steals, seven blocked shots, and forced 12 Memphis turnovers.

The Grizzlies had six players in double figures. Dillon Brooks joined Valanciunas with 19 points. Brandon Clarke and Desmond Bane, coming off the bench, had 16 and 15 points, respectively. Ja Morant finished with 14 points.

With the loss, the Warriors are 22-21 for the year. The Grizzlies improved to 19-20.

Up Next: The Warriors meet the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday night at the Chase Center. The game will start at 7 pm PST.

Sharks Lose 5-2 to the Blues

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks fell to the St. Louis Blues 5-2 Saturday, at the SAP Center in San Jose. Blues goals came from Jordan Kyrou (2), Ryan O’Reilly, David Perron and Vince Dunn. Ville Husso made 29 saves for the win. Tomas Hertl and Dylan Gambrell scored for San Jose, and Devan Dubnyk made 16 saves in the loss.

The Sharks were penalized for a face-off violation in the third period, when the game was still tied 2-2. Patrick Marleau was taking the draw and the linesman took issue with the way he did it. Of the call, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said:

“It’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. I think everybody in the rink, including their team, our team, I think, the other linesman, the refs, I think everybody was shocked. It was a brutal, brutal call. It really in my mind, cost, it turned the whole game around.”

Patrick Marleau, who could not recall being penalized under this rule before, said: “Obviously he thought I cheated or turned too quickly on the draw. So I guess that was the reasoning behind the penalty.”

Sharks goaltender Devan Dubnyk was also asked about that penalty. He said:

“It’s 2-2 in the middle of the third period and you get a penalty called that I don’t think I’ve ever seen called except for maybe the first year, [in] exhibition season, when they first made the rule. And it’s embarrassing, it’s Mickey Mouse.”

Dylan Gambrell scored for San Jose at 2:33 of the first. The puck came to him high in the slot after Sorensen and Brent Burns chased it down behind the net.

St. Louis tied it up at 3:32 when Vince Dunn scored his fourth of the season. Dunn’s shot from the blue line looked likely to go wide but instead it hit Erik Karlsson’s shin pad and deflected in. Assists went to Jordan Kyrou and Ryan O’Reilly.

Kyrou gave the Blues the lead at 6:45. O’Reilly got control of the puck below the goal line and passed it up to Kyrou. Kyrou put the puck under Dubnyk in in the net. Assists went to O’Reilly and David Perron.

Mike Hoffman put the puck in the net near the 12 minute mark. The goal was called back after the Sharks challenged the play as offside.

At the end of the first period, the Sharks led on the shot clock 11-5. There was just one penalty in the first, to St. Louis. The Sharks had two shots on that power play.

Tomas Hertl tied the game 8:10 in to the second period. Nikolai Knyzhov’s pass from the defensive zone found Timo Meier on the other side of the neutral zone. Meier’s pass found Hertl speeding into the Blue’s zone. There was no one in the way to stop him as he took the shot.

The Sharks took two penalties in the second period and their penalty kill allowed just one shot to the Blues. The Sharks led in shots again, 10-8.

O’Reilly scored just 12 seconds into the power play that resulted from the face-off violation penalty. His shot from the face-off dot found its way through traffic and in. Assists went to Dunn and Perron.

Kyrou scored his second of the game at 15:51. Dubnyk followed the puck across to the right and Torey Krug passed it across the ice. Kyrou, who had just evaded Ryan Donato, tapped the puck in. Assists went to Krug and Perron.

David Perron scored into an empty net at 18:01 to make it 5-2.

The Final shot count was 31-21 Sharks. In the face-off circle, the Sharks showed improvement over recent games, winning 59%. Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl both won 67% of their draws.

The Sharks next play on Monday against the Los Angeles Kings, in San Jose at 7:30 PM PT.

The Henderson Silver Knights scored four unanswered goals in the final 27 minutes of the game to defeat the San Jose Barracuda 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at Orleans Arena.

The Silver Knights have won seven of its past eight games. The Barracuda have lost four of its past five games.

Henderson (12-2-0-0) drew first blood in the opening minute of the first period. With Nick DeSimone in the sinbin for holding just 30 seconds into the game, the Silver Knights scored on its first power play opportunity.

Jack Dugan sent a pass back to Dylan Sikura on the right wing and Sikura snapped home a wrist shot top-shelf to the short side of ‘Cuda starting goalie Alexei Melnichuk for his team-leading seventh goal of the season at the 1:09 mark.

San Jose (6-5-4-0) regrouped and scored the equalizer five minutes later. The Russian connection of Ivan Chekhovich and Maxim Letunov helped get the ‘Cuda on the board. Chekhovich, who made his San Jose debut after returning from playing in the KHL, found Letunov in between the faceoff circles and Letunov buried a wrist shot top-shelf past Silver Knights goalie Logan Thompson for his second goal of the season at the 5:35 mark.

The Barracuda gained the lead with one-tenth of a second left in the opening 20 minutes. A turnover by a Silver Knights defender from behind his own net led to a mad scramble in front of the net where Alex True was able to jam home the puck past Thompson for his fifth goal of the season. Captain Jacob Magna and Noah Gregor received assists.

True extended his point streak to five games and has points in six of his last seven games.

Henderson proved why they are one of the best teams of the AHL in the second period. Coming into the game they were a +11 and scored two goals to take control of the game.

Sikura found Danny O’Regan in the slot and the former San Jose Sharks’ fifth round draft pick rifled a wrist shot short-side over the left shoulder of Melnichuk for his fourth goal of the season at the 12:53 mark. O’Regan has goals in back-to-back games.

The Silver Knights regained the lead for good when Patrick Brown fed a pass over to Paul Cotter and he fired a wrist shot that beat Melnichuk top-shelf for his third goal of the season at the 15:36 mark.

Melnichuk left the game after the second period with an apparent lower body injury he suffered in the second period. He was replaced with Zachary Sawchenko to start the third period.

Henderson scored an insurance goal at the 13:11 mark of the third period. Tyrell Goulbourne’s shot on goal wasn’t controlled by Sawchenko and Jake Leschyshyn cashed in the rebound for his second goal of the season.

Ben Jones iced the game and finished off the scoring for Henderson with an empty net goal at the 17:21 mark.

Thompson had an impressive game, stopping 39 of the 41 shots to earn the victory. Melnichuk made 22 saves on 25 shots in the losing effort. Sawchenko, who had his first action in the AHL since March 6, 2020, stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced in the third period.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-3 on the power play. Henderson went 1-for-2.

Henderson is currently undefeated at home with a 6-0 record.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Tomas Jurco 2) O’Regan 3) Cotter
