Oakland 4 – 8. – 2

May 1, 2021

OAKLAND–The A’s started the season by losing seven straight games. They followed their first win by losing one more game and then going another 13 without a single defeat, giving them a record of 14-8. They ended the month at 16-11, a winning percentage of .593.

This represents an almost exact regression to the norm, since their totals for the last three seasons, including the truncated 2020 campaign, were 230-157, which comes to .594. So it would be reasonable to anticipate that we’ll see a season of ups and downs like those of the month we’ve just endured, although the swings might not be as dramatic as what we’ve seen so far. In other words, fasten your seat belts, folks, we’re in for a bumpy ride.

In this afternoon’s contest, Oakland didn’t have to contend with an opponent on the mound as intimidating as John Means, who almost completely mastered them last night. Instead they faced the veteran right hander Matt Harvey, making the 150th start of a big league career that has had its ups and downs. Recently, it’s taken a modest upturn.

His penultimate start resulted in his first win since July 13, 2019, when he still toiled for the LA Angels. His most recent start, one earned run in six innings against the Yankees, was, as the Orioles’ game notes point out, his first quality start since April 28, 2019 and marked the first time since July 13, 2018 that he’d notched consecutive wins.

Oakland countered with Jesús Luzardo, who, at 1-2, 5.40, has been tantalizing A’s fans with occasional displays of his undoubted, but inconsistently displayed, talent.

Both pitchers got through their first two frames with little difficulty. Then disaster struck the home town crew.

The top of the third was a travesty. The Orioles did a little bit to help their cause, but most of their runs were gifts from the A’s. Here’s a brief summary of the action:

D.J. Steward hit a bouncing ball wide of first that bounced off Seth Brown’s glove for an error.

Ramón Urías’s single sent Stewart to third.

Luzardo walked Cedric Mullins to load the bases with nobody out.

Austin Hayes singled to left, plating Steward and Urías. Hays advanced to second on the hit and to third on Matt Chapman’s (of all people!) errant relay throw to third.

Trey Mancini got a Texas League single that Elvis Andrus couldn’t catch up with in short left field, driving in Hays.

Maikel Franco singled to left, moving Mancini up a base.

Mancini and Franco moved up another notch on a wild pitch.

Pedro Severino fouled out to the catcher, Aramis García.

Mancini scored on Ryan Mountcastle’s sac fly to right. Franco moved on to third.

Franco scoredon another wild pitch.

Finally, Freddy Galvis flew out to center.

That was all Luzardo would pitch. The line for his three inning stint was six runs, evenly divided between earned and unearned, on five hits, two walks, and two wild pitches. He struck out two, and, of the 64 pitches he threw, 34 were strikes. He eventually was charged with the loss, his third against a lone win,. His ERA now stands at 5.79.

Luzardo was replaced by Deolis Guerra, who pitched two innings, allowing nothing but one walk before J.B. Windelken took his place to pitch the sixth.

Windelken wasn’t as effective as his predecesor. J.B. allowed a single to Freddy Galvis, after which D.J. Stewart deposited an 84 mph change up over the right field fence, 341 feet from home plate.

Down 8-0 with two out in the sixth, Oakland made a comeback of sorts, led by the two players who had committed costly errors in the fatidic third. Chapman singled to right and scored on Brown’s double to the same field, After Cole Sulser relived Harvey, Tony Kemp brought Brown home with the A’s second tally.

Harvey’s line ended up at two runs, both earned, on four hits and a walk in 5-2/3 innings of work. He delivered 90 pitches, 54 for strikes. He ended up getting the win, making him 3-1, 4.06 for the season.

Mark Canha continued the comeback, leading off the home seventh with his fourth home run of the season, this one off a 92 mph four seamer that he drove into the left field seats, just to the right of the foul pole. After Sulser walked Jeff Lowrie and struck out Laureano for the first out, the southpaw Tanner Scott was brought in to face Oakland’s DH, fellow lefty Mitch Moreland. Scott got both Moreland and Chapman out to preserve Baltimore’s 8-3 lead. Sulser’s 2/3 of an inning, in which he gave up a walk, a hit, and a run on 21 pitches, still left him with an enviable ERA of 1.08.

Oakland used two other relievers. Reymin Guduan and Sergio Romo threw a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, with Romo retiring the side in order. Guduan required a pitcher’s best friend after giving up a lead off single.

Laureano gave the A’s a last hurrah by blasting a 420 foot two out homer to left center in the bottom of the ninth, Too little, too late, but nice any way, and it made the final score look almost respectable.

The A’s will try to salvage a win out of this series when they send Sean Manaea (3-1, 2.83) against the Orioles and Bruce Zimmermann (1-3, 5.33) in a 1:07 battle of left handers.

Curry’s big third quarter sinks Rockets 113-87

The Golden State Warriors Stephen Curry (30) is jubilant after scoring a three point shot against the Houston Rockets Armoni Brooks (7) during Sat May 1, 2021 game in Houston (Houston Chronicle photo)

By Jerry Feitelberg

The Golden State Warriors (32-32) faced the downtrodden Houston Rockets (16-48) at the Toyota Center in Houston Saturday night. The Rockets, without their star John Wall, beat the Milwaukee Bucks Thursday night behind Kevin Porter’s outstanding performance. Porter, who is 20-years-old knocked down 50 points, leading Houston to victory. The Rockets’ management discharged their head coach, Muke D’Antoni, at the end of last season. The Rockets traded Russell Westbrook to the Washinton Wizards, and James Harden went to the Brooklyn Nets.

The Rockets have struggled all season long, and it appears they will be one of the three teams with the worst record in the NBA. Having lost two in a row, the Warriors needed to take advantage of the Rockets to stay in the race for a ninth or tenth spot in the Western Conference standings. Things didn’t go well in the first half of the game. The Rockets found a way to contain Stephen Curry. The Warriors got their act together in the third quarter and were able to win easily 113-87.

The Warriors’ offense in the first two quarters left a lot to the imagination. Curry made two threes in ten tries. The Rockets held him to seven points. The Rockets finished the first quarter with a two-point lead 24-22. The Rockets went on a 9-3 run to start the second quarter to lead 33-25. Curry returned with about six minutes left in the period. Houston kept answering every Warrior basket. The Rockets led at halftime 55-49.

The third quarter was a different story. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr must have read the riot act to his team during the halftime break. They did not play well against the Dallas Mavericks, and they folded against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the fourth quarter Thursday night.

They could not afford to lose to Houston. Kerr’s words must have resonated with the Warriors as they came out smoking to start the third quarter. Golden State went on a 28-4 run to start play in the period. At one point, they scored 24 unanswered points. Curry was on fire. He scored 23 points in his 12 minutes on the floor. He connected on five threes in seven tries. The Warriors outscored the Rockets 39-12 in the quarter to lead 87-67.

The Warriors had Curry and Draymond Green on the bench for the entire fourth quarter. Andrew Wiggins, Mychal Mulder, and Jordan Poole provided the offense as the Warriors cruised to victory 113-87

Game Notes and Stats: With the win, the Warriors are 32-32 for the year. They have two more road games left for the year. They will play both against the New Orleans Pelicans. They lead the Pelicans by 3 1/2 games for the final playoff spot. The first game with New Orleans will be Monday night. The Warriors play the last six games of the season at the Chase Center.

The Warriors used eight players again for the second game in a row. Kelly Oubre, Jr. was out with a wrist problem. Damion Lee is still on Covid-19 protocol, and Eric Paschall missed another game due to a hip flexor. Paschall is improving and will be back soon, possibly next week.

Curry had another 30-point game. He had 30 points, six rebounds, and five assists. He was nine-for-23 from the floor and 7-fo-17 from downtown. Andrew Wiggins continued his excellent play on both ends of the court. Wiggins poured in 20 points.

He pulled down two rebounds and had two assists. Mychal Mulder and Jordan Poole each had 17 points. Mulder connected on five threes. Draymond Green nearly had a triple-double. Green scored nine points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and recorded eight assists.

As a team, the Warriors shot 46% from the floor. They made 18 threes in 46 attempts. They moved the ball well, especially in the second half, with 32 assists on 39 made field goals. They had ten steals and eight blocks on defense. They forced 18 Rockets turnover that resulted in 20 points for the Warriors.

The Warriors meet the Pelicans in New Orleans Monday Night. The game will start at 4:30 pm.

Machado hits a three-run home run to lead the Padres to victory 6-2

San Diego Padres Manny Machado gives thanks to the Almighty after hitting a three run home run against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning at Petco Park in San Diego on Sat May 1, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

Manny Machado came up with the biggest hit of the night for the San Diego Padres, and it was able to stick.

Machado hit a three-run home run off of Anthony DeSclafani in the bottom of the first inning, as the Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-2 at Petco Park.

The Machado home run held up, as Blake Snell went five innings, two runs (one earned), walking three and striking out six on his way to his first win as a member of the Padres.

Trent Grisham led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and then Fernando Tatis, Jr., before Machado launched a three-run home run into the left-center field seats and the Padres never looked back.

After that nightmarish first inning, DeSclafani did not allow a run, gave up a hit, walked one and struck out three in his final five innings of work.

Overall, DeSclafani went six innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking two and striking out three and he lost for the first time as a member of the Giants.

Mauricio Dubon got the Giants on the board in the top of the fifth inning, as he hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. It was the first home run of the season for Dubon, who also picked up his seventh run batted in of the season.

Darin Ruf cut the Padres down to one run, as he singled off of Snell to score DeSclafani, who reached on a fielding error by Snell. That would be as close as the Giants would get on the evening.

Jurickson Profar put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth inning, as he a pinch-hit home run off of Zack Littell.

Jake Cronenworth added on some insurance, as he hit a two-run single off of Jose Alvarez that scored Tatis, Jr., and Eric Hosmer.

NOTES: Through 27 games, the Giants have made only seven errors, the fewest errors of any team in major league baseball.

UP NEXT: Kevin Gausman looks to stop the bleeding on Sunday, as he takes the Petco Park mound, as the Giants look to avert the sweep.

Sharks Fall 4-3 to Avalanche, Kane scores 500th Point

The San Jose get swept in the two game set with the Colorado Avalanche losing on Thursday 3-0 and on Sat May 1, 2021, 4-3 in Denver (@Avalanche photo)

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks lost their final road game of the season to the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 4-3. Nathan MacKinnon, Andre Burakovsky, Patrik Nemeth and Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado. Devan Dubnyk made 22 saves for the win. Alexander Brabanov, Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose. Josef Korenar made 39 saves in the loss. Evander Kane scored his 500th NHL point in the third period with an assist on Logan Couture’s short-handed goal.

Josef Korenar made 39 saves on 43 shots Saturday. After the game, Sharks captain Logan Couture talked about the goaltender:

“I thought he kept us in the game. He was probably our best player for the majority of the night. I thought it could have been a lot more than the four that they got. So, he battled for us. We made it a game at the end there but wish we’d helped him out a little bit more throughout the game.”

The first period ended scoreless, with Colorado leading in shots 15-10. There was just one penalty, taken by the Sharks. The Avalanche power play got one shot on goal.

The Sharks scored the first goal of the game, on a power play at 4:25 of the second period. It was their first power play goal in 28 power plays. Barabanov caught a rebound out in the face-off circle and shot it by Dubnyk on the blocker side. Assists went to Tomas Hertl and Erik Karlsson.

Nathan MacKinnon tied the game at 13:08 of the second. The teams were playing four-on-four with Brent Burns and Dan Renouf in the box for penalties taken less than 20 seconds apart. Conor Timmins made a pass across the ice to MacKinnon who was closing fast on the net without anyone in his way. Assists went to Timmins and Mikko Rantanen.

Andre Burakovsky gave the Avalanche the leads at 16:06. Burakovsky caught the puck out of an offensive zone face-off, skated toward the slot and took the shot through some traffic to score. An assist went to JT Compher.

The Sharks killed one penalty in the second period, but were out-shot 12-4 in the period. The Colorado power play had four shots in the second. The Sharks power play had the one shot.

Patrik Nemeth made it 3-1 for Colorado at 9:05 of the third period. His slap shot from the blue line zipped through traffic and into the net. Assists went to Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon.

Logan Couture cut the lead by one with a short-handed goal at 9:55. Evander Kane snatched up a fumbled puck at the blue line and skated away from Makar to get a shot on goal. Logan Couture followed in a hurry and put the rebound away.

The Avalanche challenged the goal for goaltender interference. Kane did make contact with Dubnyk without actually entering the blue paint. The NHL did not consider it enough to call back the goal.

Colorado took back their two-goal lead with 4:26 left in the period. Mikko Rantanen’s shot from the blue line went through a lot of traffic and in. Assists went to Devon Toews and Conor Timmins.

With the Sharks net empty, Brent Burns took a quick shot from the blue line at 17:47. The puck went off of Tomas Hertl for his 16th of the season. Assists went to Burns and Barabanov.

The Sharks made a good final push at the end but it was not enough. The Sharks finally won the shot battle for the period, 11-8. The Sharks had one power play and a bit in the third, which added two shots to their tally. Colorado had just one shot on their power play before Couture scored and the unsuccessful challenge ended the power play. The Sharks won just 41% of the face-offs in the game.

The Sharks next play on Monday, in San Jose. They will face the Avalanche again at 7:30 PM PT.

Silver Knights split series with 4-0 shutout win over Barracuda

Tough game for the San Jose Barracuda taking a one goal loss to the Henderson Silver Knights at SAP Center in San Jose on Sat May 1, 2021 (@sjbarracua photo)

by Marko Ukalovic

SAN JOSE, Calif–Less than 24 hours after giving up seven goals, including a franchise worst five power play goals, the Henderson Silver Knights exacted revenge on the San Jose Barracuda in a 4-0 shutout victory on Saturday evening at SAP Center.

Henderson snapped its two game losing streak as they split the two-game series. With the loss, San Jose had its three-game winning streak also snapped.

It was a complete 180 for the ‘Cuda after setting a few franchise scoring marks the night before against its Pacific Division rival. San Jose matched a franchise low with just 16 shots on net.

Oscar Dansk had a relatively easy night as he stopped all 16 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season and seventh of his career.

Henderson (22-12-0-0) drew first blood on a five-on-three power play early in the first period. The Silver Knights only needed 20 second during the two-man advantage to break the seal. Danny O’Regan fed a pass over to Jack Dugan who fired a one-timer top-shelf past ‘Cuda goalie Sam Harvey for his first goal of the period and his seventh of the season at the 4:36 mark.

The Silver Knights doubled its lead five minutes later. Paul Cotter picked up the puck at center ice. He raced in from the left side on a two-on-two rush. Cotter performed a toe-drag before snapping a wrist shot past Harvey, who was screened by Jonas Rondbjerg, for his sixth goal of the season at the 9:30 mark.

Dugan gave the Silver Knights a 3-0 lead late in the period with his second goal of the opening 20 minutes. Brayden Pachal hit Dugan with a home run pass at the blueline. Dugan than skated in on a breakaway and made a fore-hand to backhand move as he slipped the puck past Harvey for his eighth goal of the season at the 14:39 mark.

San Jose (15-12-4-2) was dominated by Henderson on the shot clock 16-6 after the first period.

Henderson scored its fourth unanswered goal late in the second period. Lucan Elvenes found Reid Duke alone at the Barraucuda blueline. Duke raced in all alone and shot a quick wrister through the five-hole of Harvey for his fourth goal of the season at the 14:35 mark.

Duke ended a nine-game goal less draught.

Henderson out shot San Jose 11-5 in the middle frame.

Things became chippy in the scoreless third period as frustration set in for San Jose as the ‘Cuda engaged in three fights. Sasha Chmelevski and Peter DeLiberatore went it at the 3:53 mark. Steen Pasichnuk and Duke danced the tango at the 8:17 mark. Then Brinson Pasichnuk and Jermiane Loewen were both given game misconduct penalties after they scrapped with each other at the 11:13 mark.

Harvey made 35 saves on 39 shots in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES: San Jose was 0-for-4 on the power play. Henderson went 1-for-5.

The Three Stars of the Game were: 1) Dugan 2) O’Regan 3) Ryan Murphy

Profar comes through with the hit of the game in Padres win 3-2

The San Diego Padres Jake Cronenworth slides in after scoring on a two run single by Jurickson Profar as San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is late with the tag in the sixth inning at Petco Park in San Diego on Fri Apr 30, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Jeremy Kahn

On a night where the San Francisco Giants could have lengthened their lead in the National League West, the San Diego Padres put a stop to that.

The Padres, who are predicted to contend in the National League West with the reigning World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take game one of the three-game series with a 3-2 victory over the Giants at Petco Park.

Despite the loss, the Giants remained in first place by a half-game, as the Dodgers lost to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

Jurickson Profar singled to center field off of Logan Webb to score Eric Hosmer and Jake Cronenworth and the Padres move within 1.5 games of the Giants in the NL West.

Hosmer got the inning started, as he singled to left field off of Webb and then Cronenworth hit a double to right field that sent Hosmer to third base. After Wil Myers grounded out for the first out of the inning, and then Profar singled to give the Padres the lead for good.

It looked like the Giants took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Darin Ruf hit an opposite field pinch-hit grand slam off of Tim Hill; however, the umpires got together and ruled the ball foul and then Ruf struck out against Hill.

With a chance to take the lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Giants loaded the bases, as Buster Posey singled to left field off of former teammate Drew Pomeranz and advanced to second, when Profar was unable to field the ball for a fielding error. Both Brandon Belt and Austin Slater walked to load the bases. Evan Longoria then grounded into a double play that scored Posey from third base, and send Belt to third base; however, Mauricio Dubon was not able to be the hero, as he grounded out to end the threat and the inning.

Former Giants closer Mark Melancon was retired the Giants in order to pick-up his ninth save of the season.

Webb went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out four, as he saw his record fall to 1-2 on the season.

On the side of the diamond, newcomer Yu Darvish won for the third time in four decisions, as he went 6.1 innings, allowing one run, scattering four hits, walking three and striking out a season-high 12.

The Giants jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as with two outs, Posey hit his sixth home run of the season, an opposite field home run off of Darvish. Posey went 2-for-4 on the night, and scored both Giants runs.

Hosmer tied up the game in the bottom of the first inning, as he hit an infield single that scored Trent Grisham, who doubled to left field with one out in the frame.

Zach Littell made his season debut for the Giants in the bottom of the seventh inning, as he went one inning, walking one and striking out one.

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Giants made several different transactions to the roster, as Stephen Duggar was recalled from the Alternate Training Site, Littell was added to the Major-League roster. Jason Vosler was sent to the Alternate Training Site and Skye Bolt was optioned on Wednesday to the Alternate Training Site and was designated for assignment today.

Brandon Crawford was forced to leave the game early due to a left calf contusion and will be reevaluated tomorrow.

It was 60 years ago today that Willie Mays hit four home runs in a 14-4 victory over the Milwaukee Braves at County Stadium. Mays, who turns 90 on Thursday became the ninth player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game.

UP NEXT: Anthony DeSclafani looks to improve to 3-0 on the season, as he takes the mound on Saturday night, while the Padres will send Blake Snell to the mound, as he looks for his first win as a member of the Padres.

Flashback Wednesday: The Kings had their worst game of the season on Wednesday against arguably the best team in the NBA the Utah Jazz. The Kings played an embarrassing game in which they weren’t able to even compete against the Jazz. The Jazz handles the Kings easily by the final of 154-105. If it weren’t for the Kings Justin James hitting a three as time expired the Kings would have lost the game by 50 points.

In the first half, the Kings and Lakers went back and fourth. The Kings outscored the Lakers in the first quarter 30-23 as the Kings came out of the gate strong. Avalanche Shut Out Sharks 3-0

The San Jose Sharks Erik Karlsson (65) tries to control the puck as the Colorado Avalanche’s left wing Andre Burakovsky gives pursuit at SAP Center on Fri Apr 30, 2021 (AP News photo)

By Mary Walsh

The San Jose Sharks fell 3-0 to the Colorado Avalanche in Denver Friday. Gabriel Landeskog, Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado, and Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves for the shut out win. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones made 33 saves in the loss.

The Sharks are clearly giving prospects a good look now and several played in Friday’s game. Left wing Ivan Chekhovich made his NHL debut with the Sharks Friday. He had one blocked shot in 10:55 of ice time. Center Alexander True made his third appearance of the season. He had one shot on goal and took one penalty in 13:01 of ice time.

After the game, Sharks Head Coach Bob Boughner said: “These young guys that are playing on the road in a tough building, against a good team, there was quite a few fans here tonight, so there was some atmosphere and it’s a good experience for them.”

Also getting a good look, the more experienced left wing Alexander Barabanov played his third in a row since joining the team at the trade deadline. He had a goal and two assists in his first two games. On a line with Tomas Hertl and Evander Kane Friday, he had one blocked shot, one hit and one penalty in 19:15 of ice time.

Boughner said, of Barabanov: “He slows the game down a bit, and his skill takes over. We’re asking a lot of him, playing on that top line against those players and he doesn’t look out of place defensively.”

The first goal came on a Colorado power play at 11:13 of the first period. Cale Makar took a shot down the slot and Gabriel Landeskog subtly tipped it into the net. Assists went to Makar and Mikko Rantanen.

Landeskog was in front of Jones for the next goal as well, on another power play at 13:13. This time Makar’s shot went past Landeskog and in. Assists went to Rantanen and Joonas Donskoi.

The Sharks had one power play in the first period, and got two shots on goal with the man advantage. Colorado had two power plays and got six shots with the extra man. Colorado outshot the Sharks 13-6 in the first.

The second period saw the Sharks kill off two penalties, one abbreviated by a Colorado penalty. Colorado’s power play got two shots in the period and the Sharks got none in their minute or so of power play time. The Avalanche out-shot the Sharks 12-8 in the period.

The Sharks put the puck in the net midway through the third period but Colorado challenged it as off side. Alexander Barabanov had knocked the puck out of the air above the blue line and after a review the goal was called back.

The third Colorado goal came at 18:21 of the third, when Mikko Rantanen scored into an empty net. Assists went to Landeskog and Carl Soderberg.

The Sharks power play took four shots in two tries in the third. The Avalanche still out shot the Sharks 11-7.

In keeping with attention to prospects, the Sharks’ AHL team was also playing Friday, in San Jose. Lengthy look-ins on that game were broadcast during intermissions of the Sharks game. The Barracuda won 6-4.

The Sharks next play on Saturday, again in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche at 5:00 PM PT.
