The San Francisco Giants are rich in managerial experience, talent, and advisors; under this 2026 team’s payroll, there are Bruce Bochy, Dusty Baker, and Ron Washington. All managers at the Major League level with extensive and successful resumes; two of the three are future Hall of Fame material. Except for Washington, the others are done with managing.

The Giants hired Tony Vitello in late 2025 primarily because Buster Posey (with higher management support), as the President of Baseball Operations, sought a high-energy, moderate leader who would change the team’s culture and develop young talent. Vitello was ‘all that’ at Tennessee, where he was intense and competitive and won, but in Major League Baseball, where egos are plentiful, you need to be an effective manager on the field with strategy and a psychiatrist in the locker room to win in the end. By the way, you also need the horses to win the race.

So far, during this young season heading into May, the Giants do not look like a team with the fire to win. The question is, can Vitello change this culture? The same culture that ended with a mediocre 81-81 last season under Bob Melvin, can they improve on that?

Vitello might be able to do it, maybe or not. I do not believe the Giants can tell this early in the season; they have to be evaluating as they go. After all, with all respect to Vitello, a man who played college baseball but never played professional baseball at any level (minor or major leagues). He was a good infielder at the collegiate level. Tony Vitello was the head baseball coach at the University of Tennessee for seven years.

In 2024, Stephen Vogt was named American League Manager of the Year with the Cleveland Indians; he never managed or coached at any level (professional or otherwise). As a matter of record, Vogt owns the record as the fastest person to go from player to Manager of the Year; he did it in 297 days.

He played in the major leagues for 11 seasons. I am not asking for Vitello to be fired this early. I know fans are quick to react, but they are the team’s prized customers who attend their games, follow the team, and spend money.

A good friend of mine told me about Vitello, “Give him this year and next.” OK, but we live in different times; fans paying good money to attend games might have a shorter patience span for Vitello, which is why they’re called “fans”.

Oracle is not Dodger Stadium; there is not a sellout here every game. Why can the Giants develop, draft, or acquire really athletic players like Reds Elly De La Cruz and Pirates O’Neill Cruz or Royals Bobby Witt Jr.? These are exciting, talented players, winning players, and that is what changes your culture.

Since 2018, the average tenure of a team manager has been between 3 and 4 years.

#1 After the San Francisco Giants got swept twice losing six straight games they came back to Oracle Park in San Francisco snapping the skid with a win over the San Diego Padres.

#2 Casey Schmitt hit his fifth home run of the season to tie it up with the Padres at 1-1. Schmitt had been struggling and the plate and had been caught trying to advance to second base three times during the past week and was looking for something positive to happen.

#3 The Giants to started the game got some solid hitting in the bottom of the second inning with Rafael for an RBI single to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

#4 In the bottom of the sixth Devers hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Luis Arraez to score and add another Giants run making it 3-1.

#5 The Padres in the top of the ninth fell short after getting a home run from former Oakland Athletic Ramon Laureano his fifth of the season cutting the Giants lead to one run but the Giants snap their six game losing streak with a 3-2 win.

On May 2, 2026 the San Diego Padres reached an agreement to sell controlling ownership to an investment group led by José E.Feliciano and Kwanza Jones. The deal was a record 3.9 billion.

Still have to be approved by Major League Baseball.Kwanza Jones is an American artist, investor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, and her husband is José E. Feliciano. Feliciano is not the Puerto Rican singer José Feliciano, who is 80 years old, and whose biggest hits were “Felíz Navidad” and “Chico and the Man”.

The San Diego Padres have won two pennants and played in the World Series in 1984 and 1998, losing both times. Before the Padres, the Baltimore Orioles were the last franchise to be sold in MLB, sold in 2024 for $.1.725 The San Diego Padres will visit the slumping San Francisco Giants for the first time this season on May 4, 5, 6 for a three-game series at Oracle Park.

From My Notebook: Mike Trout, a Great player, never in a World Series

This 2026 season marks Mike Trout’s 16th season in Major League Baseball, all 16 years with the LA Angels of Anaheim. I witnessed his first season, 2011, working the play by play for Fox Sports West TV (Spanish) and some of his best seasons thereafter, when he first came to the big club from the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate, Salt Lake Bees.

During his first 2011 season, he played only 40 games and did not show what all scouts at the time had advertised, but he was destined for greatness. Next season, 2012, he did not disappoint. Won the AL Rookie of the Year and the AL MVP, his first of three MVPs, won the Hank Aaron Award twice, ESPN Best MLB player three times, and it goes on and on and on. No doubt Trout is a future member of the Hall of Fame.

Trout is one of those dream players who excels at everything. He is a team leader, great with his teammates and all players, great with the press and the fans, and a top-of-the-line professional, serious and respectful about the game of baseball.

Too bad he might never play in a World Series, the Angels teams during this period have not been competitive. Once in the Hall of Fame, he will not be the only great player with no World Series experience. In fact, Mike Trout appeared in only one playoff in his career, and played in a total of three postseason games during the 2014 American League Division Series with the Angels, who were swept by the Kansas City Royals, resulting in 0 wins and 3 losses in his career

Some great Hall of Fame players who never played in a World Series. Seven-time AL batting champion Rodney (Rod) Carew, eight-time NL batting Champion Tony Gwynn, Nap Lajoie, Ernie Banks, Ken Griffey Jr, Andre Dawson, and legendary Red Sox star Ted Williams are still great players who often played on teams that did not win the pennant.

Per my request, below was sent to me by my good friend and LA Angels Radio Voice Terry Smith.

Beginning with Mike Trout’s 2012 Rookie of the Year season and continuing through the 2019 season, that eight season stretch was truly amazing to witness. He was, without question, the best player in Major League Baseball.

Mike’s five tool skill set was a joy to watch, but injury issues following the 2020 Covid season have slowed his performance, which has been unfortunate. It’s also been unfortunate in his illustrious career that he has only appeared in one postseason series. Mike’s career will earn him a spot in Baseball’s Hall of Fame, but for me, having the opportunity to watch his career firsthand, it’s sad he hasn’t been able to showcase it in October.   -Thanks socio, I appreciate it.

Terry Smith has been the radio voice of the Los Angeles Angels since 2002. As of the 2026 MLB season, he is in his 24th or 25th year with the club, making him the longest-tenured broadcaster in Angels team history. He calls games on AM 830AM KLAA.

As April ended, it had already had two managerial casualties. Alex Cora was fired after managing the team for eight years and one World Series Title in 2018. He won 620 games during his tenure running the field for the Sox, one of their best managers in this legendary franchise, but their start of this season was pathetic, so he is gone, Adiós

Rob Thompson was also fired as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, finishing with a 366-270 regular season record, the highest winning percentage for a Phillies manager since 1900. Thompson managed the Phillies from 2022 to 2026. He is gone, Adiós.

There are other managers in the hot seat as of May 1. The Mets’ Carlos Mendoza is trying to keep the ship afloat in Queens. This 2026 Mets are off to the third-worst start in franchise history, 10-21 through their first 21 games. Ranks only second behind the 1962 Mets of Casey Stengel.

The 2026 Mets are off to a 10-21 record through their first 31 games; this performance ranks only behind the notoriously poor starts of 1962 (9-22 or worse) and 1964 (9-22). As we begin May, this Mets team is already 11.5 games out of first place, totally unacceptable for a team with a payroll this year of $335 Million, the largest in the game.

Houston Astros Manager Joe Espada (Espada in Spanish means Sword), his Houston Astros lost their 31st pitcher to free agency, Framber Valdéz. They ended April with a 12-20 record in last place in a very close and competitive American League West behind the first-place Sacramento A’s; however, in last place just 4 games out of first. This month of May will be crucial for Espada’s Houston Astros.

I believe Mets manager Carlos Mendoza will get the next walking to the Guillotine, for obvious reasons. The Mets are a rich team in talent and payroll expected to win, and they are deep in a hole of 11.5 games in the cellar. Even though it is early, that record is below the Mendoza line.

On April 30, 2026, the Philadelphia Phillies became the first team in 22 years to win both games of a doubleheader via walk-off, sweeping the San Francisco Giants. The Phillies won the opener 3-2 on a Justin Crawford single and the second game 6-5 in 10 innings on an Alec Bohm sacrifice fly

The story with the Giants is totally different because their rookie manager, Tony Vitello, should still be given a chance; he has only managed a bunch of games, and the whole season is still ahead. I will not ‘stick a fork’ in this Giants team yet; however, in this NY West with the Dodgers, Padres, and even the Diamondbacks, the Giants better start winning soon, because the Guillotine is waiting and it has no mercy.

You cannot win a pennant in April, but you can surely lose it.

Yasiel Puig signs contract in Canada while awaiting sentence in the US

Cuban-born ex-Major League star recently signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the CBL (Canadian Baseball League).

Puig is currently awaiting sentencing following his February 2026 conviction on federal charges. On February 6, he was found guilty by a Federal Grand Jury of obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal investigators. These charges stem from a 2019 investigation into an illegal sports gambling operation run by Wayne Nix, where Puig placed over 900 bets on sports, including tennis, football, and Basketball.

Yasiel Puig finds himself in quite a conundrum

The 2026 season for the Canadian Baseball League (CBL)—formerly the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL)—opens on Sunday, May 10, 2026, Mother’s Day.

The inaugural season as the rebranded, fully professional CBL begins with a matchup between the Kitchener Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs (where Yasiel Puig is expected to play) at Christie Pts in Toronto.

The situation, Puig is scheduled to be sentenced on May 26, 2026, which is a couple of weeks after he begins playing in Canada with the Maple Leafs. Those might be the last games of professional baseball that the talented Cuban player will see for a while, since he faces up to 15 years in Federal Prison

The sentencing is set to take place in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles.

Unfortunate story for a baseball player who came into the major leagues with great talent and a lot of promise

MLB career. Puig played in 861 regular-season games with the LA Dodgers (2013-2018) and the Cleveland Indians, where he played his final game on September 27, 2019. 

  • Over seven seasons, he batted .277 with 132 home runs, 415 RBI, and 441 runs scored.
  • Position: Primarily played right field, but also saw time in center and left field.
  • Debut/Last Game: He debuted on June 3, 2013, and played his final MLB game on September 27, 2019.
  • As a braodcaster with the LA Angels for FOX SPORT LA,  I interviewed Yasiel in one ocassion,and for our pregame show when the Dodgers were visiting Angel Stadium at the time Yasiel Puig was the player everybody was talking about.
  • Teams: Los Angeles Dodgers (2013–2018), Cincinnati Reds (2019), and Cleveland Indians (2019).
  • Career Stats: Over seven seasons, he batted .277 with 132 home runs, 415 RBI, and 441 runs scored.
  • Position: Primarily played right field, but also saw time in center and left field.
  • Debut/Last Game: He debuted on June 3, 2013, and played his final MLB game on September 27, 2019.

#1 With strikeout rates still high across Major League Baseball, are recent rule changes (like the pitch clock and shift ban) actually improving offensive production, or do pitchers still have the upper hand?

#2 Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell finds it strange that the Los Angeles Dodgers are allowed to carry 14 pitchers while the MLB maximum for pitchers on a roster is 13. The Dodgers use Shohei Ohtani as a pitcher and a designated hitter on his off days from pitching so it would seem Ohtani is not counted as being on the pitching staff. The underlying talk has been the Dodgers are an exception because Ohtani is a cash cow and huge draw for baseball so MLB looks the other way on the 13 maxium pitchers on a roster rule.

#3 With the Sacramento A’s recent success especially against some competive teams and recent series wins against a four game 2-2 split with Texas, winning two out of three with Chciago White Sox and taking the first of a three game series from the always tough Seattle Mariners and are first place in the AL West can this A’s team compete this season.

#4 The Mets continue to struggle losing their 12th straight game to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Francisco Lindor defened his manager Carlos Mendoza saying he’s not the problem the team just isn’t putting it together. The players like Lindor are standing up for Mendoza.

#5 Young Stars Taking Over Players like Elly De La Cruz and Gunnar Henderson are becoming faces of the league—how important is youth movement to maintaining fan interest and growing the sport globally?

I get it, the Sacramento A’s plan is to keep improving, so by the time they open their new digs in Las Vegas, they can be real contenders. My broadcast partner, Manolo Hernández-Douen, and I talked about that during the 2024 season, when the team had a legendary Spanish-language radio station in the Bay Area, and last season in Oakland. You might say, “Oh, that is disrespectful to Sacramento”, but there is no mystery theater here.

The A’s are leasing Sacramento for a couple of years (not counting 2027), with a possible owners’ lockout looming. They are playing well so far in their young 2026 season, with their manager, Mark Kotsay, who has continued to do a good job since he was hired in December 2021.

The team improved their pitching during the off-season and acquired Aaron Civale, and relievers Scott Barlow and Mark Leiter Jr. to provide experience. Overall, this 2026 A’s club is a scrappy team with very young and exciting hitters like Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz. They are on the up and up, and could surprise a lot of people in baseball. I just wish they had a more settled, experienced pitching rotation and overall pitching to go along with that juicy lineup.

Yes, I like the A’s lineup; however, their rotation with these five starters, Severino, Springs, Civale, López, and Morales, is ranked #26 among the 30 MLB teams by Sports Illustrated. Ironically, the last “big pitcher: the A’s lost was not a starter, but a reliever, Mason Miller, the Rolls-Royce of closers, who is now with the Padres, however this was a trade that could bring very good dividends to the young Athletics in the future, especially young shortstop Leo De Vries among with three other players, all pitchers who came to the A’s in the trade. Leodalis “Leo” De Vries is a 20-year-old Dominican shortstop who was ranked No.4 prospect in baseball as recently as this month of April 2026.

A good friend of mine and ex-Oakland A’s fan asked me recently, “Are they going to trade a player for a good starting pitcher? I have no idea. Starters are not cheap; for example, Framber Valdéz signed a 3-year, $115 million contract with Detroit this year.

This version of the A’s is exciting and promising; they have a “maybe” chance of making the postseason. However, in my opinion, their pitching is still not at the level to be considered a real contender, because it is very simple; it all starts with pitching. If you are one of their fans, are you happy so far with the A’s?

Of course. Here is one reason: in April, the Athletics completed their first-ever series sweep of the New York Mets.
