From My Notebook: Yoenis Céspedes Great Escape from Cuba

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

By Amaury Pi-González

In 2011, Yoenis Céspedes was leading the Cuban league in home runs, after being assigned to the “C team”, considered the worst in the roster, then he decided to defect in the summer of that year. He took a 23-hour speedboat ride to the Dominican Republic, accompanied by six other people (including family members), where he established residency and became a free agent. Why the Dominican Republic?

Unlike Cuba, which is a communist system with no real freedom for its citizens and repression (including imprisonment), the Dominican Republic is a democracy, and just like Cuba, its national sport is baseball. The Cuban players are welcomed and respected. Céspedes lived in the Dominican Republic for approximately seven to eight months before signing his first major league contract with the Oakland A’s in March 2012, just after he gained free agent status and obtained his dream of playing in the Major Leagues, the best baseball league in the world.

As a rookie in the major leagues with the A’s, I met him for the first time in A’s Spring Training in Arizona. In 2012, he was next to Bartolo Colón, the veteran pitcher who was acquired by the A’s and, at the time, was in his 15th season in the majors. They developed a good relationship; Colón was “schooling” Céspedes about what he could expect in the major leagues.

Also, Yoenis told me Colón was his interpreter. This was four years before Commissioner Manfred sent a directive to all 30 MLB teams to hire an interpreter for their Spanish-speaking players. Covering the A’s as their radio play-by-play broadcaster, I developed a very good relationship with Yoenis Céspedes, and on one occasion, I was asked by the team to be his interpreter during A’s fans reunion, especially with A’s season ticket owners.

Yoenis truly liked Oakland; he told me many times he was comfortable with the people of Oakland, and he developed a good relationship with the fan base. He told me this, “Estaría contento de pasar toda mi carrera aqui en Oakland,” which translates to “I would be happy to spend my whole career here in Oakland.” But it was not meant to be, I believe the organization never really appreciated the Cuban player, he was a total package, he hit, hit for power, played great left field with a good, accurate arm.

Nevertheless, he did not stay much longer in Oakland and was traded to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, 2014, in exchange for pitcher Jon Lester. The team wanted an experienced pitcher for a postseason run. I was not surprised he was traded because the A’s anticipated they would lose him to free agency anyway. I think the A’s did not want to pay him the money his agent would be asking.

Yoenis Céspedes was a very popular Cuban player with the A’s, just like another Cuban, José Canseco, many years before. The A’s history with Cuban players is plenty; among others, there was also an excellent shortstop, three-time World Champion, Dagoberto Blanco (Campy) Campaneris, one of owner Charlie Finley’s favorite players. In my opinion, the best ever shortstop in Oakland A’s history.

Yoenis Céspedes today: Retired, Living in Port St.Lucie, Florida, listing his 380-acre ranch for a cool $30 million, with a 12-stall horse stable, a professional batting cage, a private barber shop, a game processing facility for hunting, and a 40X20 foot heated pool. I mean…what else do you need? just for $30 Million, that’s a bargain!.

Yoenis Céspedes MLB career: 8 Years, Played for Oakland, Boston, Detroit, NY(Mets) — .273 average—165 home runs–528 RBI — Two-time All Star 2014 and 2016— Homerun Derby Champion 2013-2014—2015 AL Gold Glove—2026 NL; Silver Slugger

Quote from Cuban-born pitcher Luis Tiant: “If we lose today, it will be over my dead body. They’ll have to leave me face down on the mound”.

#1 San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Ducks battle at SAP Center Wednesday night. For the Sharks they are six points back for a second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference behind the Nashville Predators. The Sharks after ending a six game losing streak took a two game win streak into this game.

#2 Tiger Woods who said he’ll step away from the spot light after flipping his vehicle over in a second DUI. It’s a tragic story of someone who had it all and now could be facing charges and the end of a legendary golf career.

#3 The San Francisco Giants starter Adrian Houser got a good start for the Giants pitching 5.1 innings, seven hits, one earned run, with walk and one strike out. Despite the good start reliever Jose Butto got touched by the San Diego Padres for four earned runs and three hits in just one third inning of work and the Padres barried the Giants 7-1 at Petco Park in San Diego.

#4 Sacramento A’s continue their struggles against the Atlanta Braves with a 5-1 loss. A’s starting pitcher Luis Severino pitched 3.1 innings surrendering four hits, four earned runs, and struck out seven but it was those four runs that hurt Severino and the A’s most.

Baseball Games on your Car radio? -Not so fast

That’s Amaury News and Commentary

Things are changing in baseball in many ways. This 2026 season, the ABS, Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system, often called “robot umps,” is a technology-driven system tracking the exact position of pitchers to determine balls and strikes in baseball.  And players can challenge the system immediately. I covered the Giants-Yankees game last Saturday at Oracle Park, and it was weird to see this during the game.

Baseball games on the radio (usually on AM radio) were a staple of radio for decades since the first ever commercial broadcast on August 5, 1921, when KDKA 1020 AM in Pittsburgh aired the Pittsburgh Pirates’ defeat of the Philadelphia Phillies, 8-5. Announcer Harold Arlin called the action from a box seat at Forbes Field using a converted telephone as a microphone.

If you are ‘old school’ or just old baseball fan, chances are you are listening to baseball on the radio (mostly AM radio), like your parents and your grandparents. But this is 2026, and the world is changing by the minute, while AM radio is going the way of the Dodo Bird.

Today, many electric vehicle brands like Tesla, Ford, BMW, and Volvo have removed AM radio from some models; others still include it, and some go with digital streaming.  I do have Sirius XM (Satellite Radio)so I can listen to many games LIVE, home and away, for all 30 teams (Channel 89 and the app) with zero blackout restrictions, and also all day to many specialty channels, like “Seriously Sinatra.”

Remember when 90% of baseball was heard on AM radio? Not anymore, although in some big radio market some AM stations carry baseball..

I remember when it was almost like a joke to have an FM station broadcasting baseball; they were almost exclusively for music, with much better sound and Stereo-sound than AM radio. Today, Major League Baseball has expanded its presence on FM radio stations, with many teams now simulcasting on FM, utilizing HD radio channels, or shifting away from traditional AM-only broadcasting to ensure better coverage.

Some AM stations today barely make it by “broker’s time “; some stations are so desperate that if you are a ventriloquist and want to pay a station to put your “show” on the air, you will probably find a station, even in languages other than English..since it would not matter. You mean a ventriloquist on the radio?

That line is from the 1987 Woody Allen movie Radio Days, one of Allen’s memorable films.

But seriously, technology is such that you can also listen to a game on your phone or wristwatch. Imagine if you had told your grandfather, “I am going to listen to the game today on my smart watch

This is the primary new digital hub for live audio, replacing the old “At Bat” app. For $59.99/year or $5.99/month, it offers live radio broadcasts for all 30 teams with no blackout restrictions, alongside 24/7 MLB Network access and MiLB games, and many other ways for those with high-tech devices

The standalone, cheap ($29.99) audio-only subscription has been phased out and incorporated into MLB Plus.

All WBC 2026 games were exclusively on SiriusXM, in addition to their MLB coverage.

Since we already have robots running many things, from baseball to retail to wholesale to top medical surgeries, some of us might like to see when we could have a microchip embedded inside our brain for FREE and listen to the World Series.

#1 How concerned should the San Francisco Giants brass of CEO Larry Baer and team president Buster Posey be. It’s been just three games but the New York Yankees swept the Giants in three games and the Giants could only muster a run in the three game series.

#2 Is these loses based on just some rookie decisons by Giants manager Tony Vitello or were the Yankees just ready for the Giants?

#3 For the second night in a row the Sacarmento A’s lost on walk off hits. The Jays Ernie Clement slugged a walk off base hit to win it in the bottom of the 11th inning beating the A’s 8-7.

#4 Tough loss for A’s reliever Luis Medina who came close to getting out of the inning but ghost runner Nathan Lukes scored from second on a base hit by Clement. For Medina 0.1 innings, one hit, one walk and one strike out.

Olympic committee bans Trans athletes from Women’s events

The 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are scheduled to begin with the Opening Ceremony on July 14, 2028, and will run through July 30, 2028. “Eligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females,” the International Olympic Committee said, “determined on the basis of a one-time SRY gene screening.”

It is unclear how many, if any, transgender women are competing at an Olympic level. No woman who transitioned from male birth competed at the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. The eligibility policy that will apply from the LA Olympics in July 2028 “protects fairness, safety, and integrity in the female category,” the IOC said.

Simply put, a biological man who transitions to female cannot compete as a female. Here in the Bay Area, the San José State University (SJSU)volleyball controversy involved allegations of unfair competition and safety concerns regarding transgender player Blaire Fleming.

Multiple teams forfeited matches from 2024 to 2026, and a federal investigation found that SJSU violated Title IX, leading to lawsuits and political backlash. I reported on this here on this site when the news first broke. What is Title IX?

Title IX is a landmark 1972 federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. It protects biological women.

That’s Amaury News and Commentary: The Warriors’ report is not good

The Warriors’ report is not good

Over the last few years, the area around Chase Center in San Francisco has been a party atmosphere, with the Warriors competing every season, but things have changed, and the Bandwagon of Warriors fans is not what it used to be; they are deserting in droves.

The Warriors played at the Oakland Arena from 1971 to 2019; they won the NBA title in 1975, 2015, 2017, and 2018. Then they moved to the brand-new, spectacular Chase Center in San Francisco for the 2019-20 season and won the 2022 NBA title, the only one since moving to San Francisco.

This season, the team has faced many setbacks. Obviously, their superstar Stephen Curry is the one who has the Warriors worried. Curry will be evaluated before the game at Chase Center this Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets. After Curry’s practice, the Warriors have to make a decision, and with only ten (10) games left during the regular season, the team and their fans are praying he can return because without Curry, they have little chance.

As of March 21, 2026, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is recovering from a right knee injury diagnosed as runner’s knee combined with a bone bruise. His last game was on January 30, 2026.

The team just lost Guard Moses Moody for the remainder of the season, suffering from a torn left patellar tendon during the recent overtime victory over the Mavericks.

In conclusion, the Golden State Warriors must win the next three games to have a shot at ‘Eight in the West’.

While playing in the Oakland Area, the Warriors had great fans, extremely loyal, who, especially after their 1975-76 NBA title season, were the NBA team from Northern California, years before the Sacramento Kings were born.

During the 1990s, when I was their Spanish radio play by play announcer for all games, home and away, traveling with the team, by the way, the only Spanish play-by-play announcer they ever hired in their history, these are the players I remember, especially the “Run TMC Trio”, Mullin, Hardaway, Richmond and others under coach Don Nelson. However, my favorite overall player during those years in the NBA was Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls, whom I had the pleasure of interviewing a few times

Darryl Strawberry from the Diamond to the Pulpit

By Amaury Pi-González

Darryl Strawberry, a former MLB superstar, had a long, successful baseball career for 17 years (1983-1999), a 4-time World Series champion 1986, 1996, 1999, 2000. He was an 8-time All Star, also Rookie of the Year, and to this day is the Mets’ all-time leader in home runs with 252 and RBIs 733.

But his personal life was many highs and lows, with addiction to redemption as an ordained minister. It has been a rough go for one of the best players in MLB for 17 years. Especially during that 1986 season.

I covered the All-Star Game in Houston. Strawberry attracted a lot of attention with another young player from the American League, José Canseco, who later that season won the AL Rookie of the Year award.

From fame in Major League Baseball to battling alcohol, drug addiction, cancer, and prison time. He found a new life with faith, sobriety, and his marriage to his third wife. As a guest preacher on Sunday, March 22, at SBN (SonLife Broadcasting Network), a Christian multi-media network that broadcasts worldwide and is founded by Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart.

Darryl, an ordained minister, gave his testimony about his aforementioned struggles, including growing up with an alcoholic father, physical abuse, and using sports to escape his environment. Darryl Strawberry: Mets 1983-1990, Dodgers 1991-1993, Giants 1994, Yankees 1995-1999.

Iranian Wrestler Saleh Mohammadi (right) turned 19 on Mar 11, 2026 was executed this week for not singing the Iranian national anthem and was one of three in public executions by the Iranian government (photo from Iranwire)

On Thursday, Iranian wrestling star Saleh Mohammadi made news worldwide, not the way he wanted. The government of Iran executed the 19-year-old in a public hanging; he was one of the three in the most recent public executions because they were in the January anti-Iran government protests.

This, according to American human rights activists and dissidents, aside from the Wrestler, also Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoudi were executed by hanging. Many world news agencies, including Associated Press, reported on this Iranian execution today.

This month up to seven members of the Iranian women’s soccer team sought asylum in Australia during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, fearing persecution after refusing to sing the national anthem. Labeled “traitors” by state media, the players were assisted by Australian federal police to defect, though some later returned home, some admitted they were worried about his family left in Iran.

According to Amnesty International, Iran is one of the world’s biggest violators of Human Rights, along with other countries in this category: North Korea, Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen. Note: Human Rights Watch notes that nations with poor records often use major events to hide abuses.

The Human Rights Foundation highlights that international bodies often overlook these abuses to maintain good relations with such regimes. Media in Iran is heavily censored and controlled by the state, with over 80% of citizens relying on government-run outlets.

Permitted media consists of pro-regime television, radio, and newspapers. While satellite dishes, popular social media (Instagram, WhatsApp), and many foreign websites are banned under Iran’s Theocratic regime.
